On Gmail, invitations, and alternatives
Alright - I'm too lazy to post my myriad of responses to many of hte above comments... so I'll just post once.
First - I feel sorry for the guy that mentioned he had some invitations. No doubt his gmail account's 1 gig limit is being tested by the torrent of email from eager slashdotter geeks desperate to get at one of his invitations.
Next issue.. For those that really just want a fat email box for free - I highly suggest going over to Spymac, or even Lycos - both of which offer 1 gig mailboxes. I personally hate ALL webmail, forgoing it for the sake of using Thunderbird. That being the case, I rarely experience the same problems with email services that other people do who prefer webmail. If you use an external mail program - spymac is great. If you prefer webmail... well, keep trying to get a gmail invite.
Some of the people are complaining about Spymac asking for lots of personal information. Am I the only one that has a fake name and address for use in sign-ups? When I was a teen, I was worried that companies would check my fake info, track me down, and pistol-whip me or something. Then, after a few times doing it, I realized that human eyes probably never actually see my fake information. My information is harvested, shared, then printed on junk mail ALL by computers. So, it's easy to get away with fake addresses. Although I feel sorry for whoever lives at 999 Mybunghole Lane, Redneck, GA 31337. They've probably gotten a TON of junk mail for "Joe Momma." But here I am sitting pretty, with all my free internet and email accounts. No secret police have come after me yet.
Lastly, I am pissed at the creator of that Gmail Machine, as well as the person who added it to slashdot for my weak mind to stumble upon. I already have two Gmail accounts - and here I am just reloading and reloading and reloading. I feel like an old woman in vegas at the slot machines... or a college girl clicking away at Diamond Mine/Bejewelled. It's mine-numbingly addictive. Damn you slashdot and Gmail machine... damn you.... -

Re:Apple's iCal software
you can post your iCal calendar to the web with a free spymac account and avoid paying for a mac.com one. I don't use iCal, so I don't know how the two compare.

Re:The Truth About Hotmail
I opened a SpyMac account a month or so ago for the 1 gig space, figuring it would be great for the Yahoo Groups I belong to. Only problem is that SpyMac is currently blocking ALL e-mail from Yahoo Groups. Back on 5/15 they reported it was just a temporary issue, but have given no estimate on a fix as of yet, and have been VERY rude to anyone trying to get an answer, if they respond at all. Re:DRM, the RIAA and the Artists...No less an authority than Steve Jobs himself has said, repeatedly and publicly, that he considers songs purchased from iTunes to be owned, not rented. For the lazy: link, link, link, link.
So the answer to your question seems pretty clear to me, at least according to the stated intent of the iTMS management.

Spymac 1GB email is not so desirable
I think Spymac's 1GB email came right after Google's announcement. The thing is, I honestly don't want to tell people, "email me at blah blah @ spymac.com." It seems I might be misconstrued as an Apple zealot (well technically I am a zealot, but I try not to project it onto people in a way that pisses them off). I have a mac.com address, but spymac.com just doesn't sound business-like.

WRONG
For a start SpyMac offers 1GB data storage, second of all timothy? WTF? Don't you do any research at all?
Stupid submitions like this shouldn't make it this far, any regular /.'er can see how stupid this was, it's not even remotely true. -
Re:Is this a joke post?
I just went to Spymac.com and there is nothing there but a dead server.
Well, it can't be, 'cause I just signed up. -
wrong...
SpyMac already offers 1G.

spymac
Spymac already offers 1Gig Email for free. Gmail's conversations sound like the most useful feature of their service. beta review
-
sure?
What about Spymac?
-
Is this a joke submission?
First 1GB email service? First of all, what is Spymac, chopped liver? They already have a free email service with 1GB of storage.
I'm going to issue a press release... I will be the first person to send data over phone lines. Maybe it will be hardware you install in your computer! Buy my stock! -
Incorrect
The first provider of free 1 gigabyte of e-mail storage is actually Spymac. Spymac beat both Gmail and this Israeli provider to the punch.
-
Too late
Spymac already has a free 1 GB web email service.

I don't see what the big deal is.
Nearly every piece of software I use looks like that. Really. There is a massive tidal wave of uncalled-for overreaction by the Mac zealots here -- all of which are rapidly being moderated up to +5, Insightful in what is fast becoming yet another infomercial for Apple on a "supposed" open-source site. I would have thought that there would be less reactionary name-calling and product-promoting, and more balanced thinking and unbiased discussion, but of course I was wrong.
What happened to "standing on the shoulders of giants?" Does Ferrari attack BMW for "stealing" their idea of having nice rounded edges, or putting their engine in the same place, or having the dashboards designed very similarly? No, because that would be moronic. Certain aesthetic designs are just naturally good. Efficient. Nice. Natural. Self-evident. And they SHOULD be copied. That's how we progress. We take the good from other designs, add more good to it, and that forces others to improve on our designs in order to compete. Not that I'm saying the Linspire apps are any good or not, I haven't used them, and I refuse to use their stuff on ethical grounds, but what's even more disgusting than Linspire still being allowed to live is the absolute selfish egotistical zealotry of the mac faithful who actually are so deluded to compare Apple's apps with these rookie Linspire apps and demand a boycott based on some bizarre notion of "cool design theft".
Look at screenshots of iTunes, iPhoto, then these Linspire apps side by side. Do you REALLY think these apps look the same? Be honest. The Linspire apps have SOME SHARED BASIC CHARACTERISTICS -- AS SHOULD ALL APPS WHICH DO THE SAME THING, but are different in other ways as well. Should Apple get in trouble for stealing their GarageBand Interface from the other music creation apps out there, such as ACID? (very old version screenshot) NO! Software is a TOOL, and every tool that is intended to do the same thing MUST share characteristics if it is to be useful.
Think about it in simpler, more universal terms: Do you think if Apple invented a tool such as the fork they'd expect everyone else to eat with their hands forever because they were the first ones to pick up a piece of wood and put food on it? No. If someone else tries to make a fork with tines, should Apple be able to prevent them from doing this, thus ensuring a monopoly? No. Society is about working TOGETHER to a degree, building off other's work; it's part of competition. Competition cannot happen if one group can demand that other groups stop advancement because their forks are too similar, WHEN THAT DESIGN IS SELF-APPARENT. And Apple WASN'T the first ones to have designs like this. They took the originals and improved on it (see my GarageBand example above). But they shouldn't be restricted from using tracks for a music sequencer just because the other guys did it first. You can't claim ownership of things at that low of a level.
How about this? It's an ancient Windows program. It seems to have all the same features that make a photo program useful, but it's laid out in reverse (less logical order for Western society, where we tend to read from left to right).
Left side = main category, right side = subcategory, etc. Other MP3 software looks like that, the Agent Newsreader I use every day is even MORE similar, popular -
Alternative gigabytes Email choice?
I've tried another Email seriver at: www.spymac.com. They provide 1GB(1048576 Kb) space for Email, and meanwhile hundreds of mb spaces for web host, weblog and photo storage use only. There is FIND function which is no advatange among existing web-email systems, I think. Because it has neither hight searching speed nor result page with more usability. Does anyone know what technology they are using to put up such big storage email service(distributed system, too?)? You can have a try and give your comments on this.

1GB email isn't that uniqueThese guys also offer 1GB email accounts with less privacy concerns, and no strings attached
I think they started doing it when they saw the demand after the early Apr google announcement and people thought it was an april fools joke.
Disk space is so cheap this isn't an amazing size -- I get 10GB (email+web hosting) for $10/month.
-
1GB free e-mail already available
Spymac already offers free 1GB e-mail accounts without all the privacy issues of GMail. However, not everyone wants their email address to have the word 'mac' in it.
-
Re:Yahoo what?
I second that, although you'll probably get an unfair sample here as the Yahoo! and Slashdot communities don't have a lot of overlap. Personally, my "over-the-operating-system site" of choice is Spymac... it's dethroned Slashdot as my homepage, a feat unto itself, and it's leeching its way into the rest of my computing life as well: I used it to host MP3's I wanted some friends to identify for my iTunes library; it's hosting some pictures from iPhoto; and Spymac Backup is going to back up all my important stuff to it, whenever they iron out the bugs.

Re:Dogfood?
I that until recently XServes were an inferior option to Linux servers; however, I have seen on the SM forums that there are a few new Xserves, probably replacing the old ones as they wear out or become obsolete.
(Disclaimer: I neither work for Spymac nor know anything about hosting a large site, so feel free to ignore me.)

Re:What's there to complain about?
Hate to reply to my own post, but SpyMac is also in the same market as google, as far as e-mail goes. They're offering 1 GB of e-mail with no 'context-sensitive' advertising all for free.
-
Privacy policy is hereThe privacy policy of Spymac is here for people that don't trust it yet
:)btw. I tried to sign up, but they send an email to you with a link to activate your account, but I still didnt get the mail (its been 6 hours)...
-
So?
You want a gig of email but with privacy? Go sign up at Spymac. It's also free, and it's already here - and not in beta. And they don't read your email.
-
Google got beat to it
Spymac has already launched the first free 1GB email service today. Yeah, they got the idea from Google, but they were able to implement it in four days.
*sits back because he knows he's too late to get modded up enough to be seen* -
SpyMac
Anyone notice that SpyMac is already offering a free 1GB E-mail account? No keyword based ads (not that I have a problem with Google's use of them). It even gives pop3 access, which last I read, gmail won't (at first).
-
Re:$2.00 a gigabyte?I agree completely. Spymac offers most of the same tricks as

Re:That's a very neutral summary
Since when is Apple the underdog in MP3 players? Aren't they going to be approaching monopoly status in a year or so if their growth rate continues?
By the way, there's a good thread on Spymac concerning this. -

Re:I find it hard to get excited about this
*sigh*
Who cares whether you get excited about it? I'm not trolling here, I'm just pointing out that there are lots of people who get excited about using Opera for various reasons. Maybe it's all the accessibility options for persons with disabilities. Maybe they just like certain features you can't find in any other browser (like being able to move tabs around).
Look, I'm not an Opera fanboy. I was excited about the new release, tried it for awhile, and went back to Safari. Neither of these browsers are perfect, and Opera has a load of problems but my point here is that you unfairly and focus on the negative aspects. This is not constructive.
Maybe you should take a glance at the features list before you completely write it off.
Not to mention you can customize the interface to look pretty much however you want. -
Re:My understanding...
One of the comments on spymac about this sums up the suit.
The song is 5:20 long. A ten year old kid sang 10 seconds of the song or 3.125% of the song. They used no actual music or clips of the song just a kid saying 3.125% of the words to the beat.
So it's a bit either way IMHO. has no music, tunes, singing or the original recording by eminem. I don't know about the legality of it, but I presume with such a minor amount of 'copying', apple's ad agency thought there was no need to get permission, but eminem obviously disagrees. -
Forgive Me Father, For I Am A Karma Whore...
... Macolytes who have a use for the command-line can really use GeekTool to improve their quality of life. See this picture for an example of its GUI goodness.
Okay, okay, so it's sitting there just churning the CPU. But it looks cool enough to get me chicks, so I figured you guys could use it too. -

Small MixUp
It was SpyMac that announced and had forged VIDEO (not just pictures) of the fake Apple PDA (called the iWalk). Looking at their site now doesn't turn up much of any news, fake or real.
This is not to say that ThinkSecret is clear of wrongdoing. They did post about an Apple PDA called the MacMate back in 1999, but obviously that never came to fruition.

Re:The Sony Way?
No. Apple tends to have quite a following, so unlike many other companies it has many rumor sites. You don't really see a sonyrumors.com, or dellrumors.com?
Just off the top of my head i can name:
thinksecret.com
spymac.com
macrumors.com
and i'm sure there are a lot more. i seriously doubt this is apple using a pr stunt, as these sorts of leaks happen often within apple and apple isn't to happy about it usually. -
Ipodsdirtysecret.com has a dirty secret of its own
Actually, the guys who made the Quicktime video hardly seem interested in the truth of it all. This article links to an interesting experience someone had with them. They don't seem to care about the truth of the issue, to the point that they are spreading disinformation and know it.

Science fair project with Vic-20
I had a Vic-20 with the tape drive. I would code on that thing all the time. It got to the point where it was quicker to just key in the program than bring it in off of the tape. I even won some award at the science fair. My mom sent it in to K-Power magazine. I did want a C64 but we couldn't afford one at the time.

Re:gee i think we reassembled them the wrong way a
There's no 17" powerbook in that picture. a 17" powerbook looks like this. Note the position of the power button and the proportions of the trackpad.
The aluminum powerbook in the comparison picture is definitely a new 15" -
Re:Video cards...
If this picture is representative of all the other G5's in the cluster then the machines do have video cards. You can see the ADC and DVI outputs . . .
-
Re:Heat?
There is a lot of space in the case.
Also there is judicious use of heat pipes
If you take a look at this picture you can see the cooling on the rear of the motherboard, which is in contact with the entire aluminum left hand side of the case.
I can say for one that the G5 demo units are silent in a room full of people talking quietly. I couldn't hear the noise from them unless I pressed my ear right to the side of the case while one was on. Using the ten (?) fans all at a mild speed really keeps the noise down. -
G5 motherboard photos
If you look in photo there is a picture of the G5 motherboards which shows they have two different separate CPU connectors, not one like in most other dual macintoshes. Each connector will take one other of the CPU cards, which lets each have an independent bus to the board. In theory this would be good with something like RealPC or Windows on the G5, as you could have one half running windows and one half running MacOS still, AND NEITHER WOULD INTERFERE WITH THE OTHER as they would still have unique access to memory and things. Does anyone know if the motherboards in all G5 are still blue or is that just development?
-
G5 motherboard pictures shows dual cpu connectors
If you look at a picture like This one here of the G5s motherboards you'll see that even a single cpu motherboard of the G5 has the space for 2 CPU connectors, so it's just a matter of soldering on a G5 connector and putting in another card and there's your extra processor.

32 bit swapping to 64bit
Doesn't the 32 bit compatibility need a reboot to use, then another reboot back to 64? I've been reading a thread about Opterons on spymac where someone insisted this was the case.
Anyone know for sure either way? -
Two Thoughts...Just two thoughts that come to mind...
1. Didn't mp3.com try to stream out copies of CD's THEY OWNED, to avoid the whole p2p legality issue?
2. iTunes had the ability to stream songs to users over the net(later revoked to only the local area), and sites online (spymac.com) create systems of automaticly build a music list of all available songs from the current set of users...Aren't both those ideas very similar to this Snapster? Maybe it is just me.
