Re:UK Govt Introduces Reserved Olympic Letter Law
Free Software Foundation founder and figurehead Richard M. Stallman was unavailable comment. A source close to the activist said that "he's working on renaming GCC in Cyrillic".

Re:ALL YOUR CODE IS BELONG TO US!
Putting Stallman on the stand is about the only way to fuck the case up.
Don't send a hacker to do a lawyers job. Even if FSF were to get involved, it doesn't have to involve RMS. Send Eben Moglen, he'd probably do a good job. -
Re:Easy ...
You have a lot more important things to worry about, sir. I'm investigating you under suspicions of Communism.
Everyone knows that the GNU movement is just a front for brainwashing good, old fashioned, God-fearing Americans into overthrowing this government by the people and for the people in favor of a Communist regime.
How do you know you're a Communist? There are a few tell-tale symptoms:
1. Destroying your perfectly configured Windows XP desktop in favor of a less powerful and less useful Linux machine;
2. Not taking showers often enough;
3. Improper usage of the English language (including difficulties with appropriate usage of the apostrophe, including substituting the contraction "it's" for the possessive "its");
4. Continually persecuting others for their non-belief in or disagreement with the writings and ethics of raving lunatics.
I, on behalf of your government, will be contacting you soon about possible appearance before a Senate committee on your Communist crimes. Until then, I suggest you install a real operating system. -
Re:source code?
Where's the flaw in this logic?
It's still stealing, whether it's logical or not.
The slashbot groupthink will disagree, screaming "COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT" and talking about how it's fine to subsume the hard work of others due to personal greed. Just remember, the only people that don't like intellectual property are people that haven't created anything, and a drug addled hippie that lives on grant money and tries to convince people to give their labor away. -

Re:Same as proprietary
As the other reply to your post indicates, the Free-Software Foundation doesn't think programmers should have to work for free. Richard Stallman has indicated that no one should be forced to program! Programmers can and should be paid. Selling software is not the problem, it's the fact that the end user (who may have paid for the software or may have received it at no monetary cost) is not free to modify and distribute the program. Having the source code is necessary to exercise these freedoms. The Free/Libre Software movement is all about assuring these freedoms exist, not killing commercial interest in software. You can pay someone to write open source software for you, in which case the programmer gets fed, and your freedoms are maintained.

Re:All depends on what you want.
even in the US we have anti capitalist things like public schools, medicare, social security, subsidies for business etc.
All of which are either failing, in disarray, or joked about.
In real life nobody is a capitalist, everybody is a socialist more or less
Kind of ironic that I hate all 4 of those things you mentioned, then, isn't it?
What has RMS said that makes you believe he is not a capitalist.
I'd say he's a Green judging from his website. He suggests boycotting Coca Cola, which, despite what socialists may say, is actually a very capitalistic action, but also seems to be one of those wackos that think Bush stole the election.
Course I gotta be careful what I say for the sake of karma right? Wrong. I don't care about karma on this website, and I'm not going to censor myself just to try to fit in with the political views of the majority of Slashdot. RMS, and other like him, who find it necessary to have active political agendas with regards to coding, are indeed "wackos" and "crackpots". -

Re:Don't use Emacs
No, I'm not going to give you a lecture on why Vi is better. But one editor rules them all.
Don't be too loud about it. At least I dare not mention that I use the better editor. We are all sinners, but some sins are considered especially bad during a religious flamewar.
And personally I don't want to be expelled from The Church of Emacs just because of the editor I use, in particular not after having been blessed by St. IGNUcios

Brilliance and arrogance are not mutually exclusive. For example. -

Re:contests... octave..
Ah well, yeah. I've thought about doing that once or twice.
But I've clicked the I agree button on Matlab's license. Worse, I've signed the NDA to see what's coming in the next release. I wouldn't want to put the Octave project at risk.
There are times I think people need to look beyond Richard M. Stallman's views on software and take his other political views seriously as well. -

Re:Well...
Point taken. I made a poor choice in deciding which words to get my point across. While I would agree that his ideas are quite simple, I would argue about being quite "profound". I would say that they are idealistic and, while nice to think about, aren't necessarily a good thing on the whole.
I think RMS has lived his whole career in academia. This undoubtedly has had some effect on his views.
Checking out his homepage shows a lot of insight into his character. One item that stood out is the first bullet under his "Long term action items". If he's willing to boycott Caterpillar for those reasons, why not boycott AM because their fab machines use dangerous chemicals that pollute the environment. We should stop all chip production and destroy all ICs, too. That, by the way, would solve his software issues as well since there'd be no computers. But hey... I guess some evils you can live with because you like them (computers) but some you don't want to live with. -

Re:I guess this faq is wrong then.
No, you're both right. The OpenVMS kernel was written in VAX Assembler, but components of OpenVMS were written in a variety of languages. Like someone we all know and [love|hate] likes to say about what is popularly called Linux, OpenVMS is much more than just a kernel.

Starts to sound like RIAA and MPAA and APB
Sending letters to copyright violators is usaly something that APB of sweden and I think MPAA http://www.mpaa.org/ does. Many file-sharers oppose this. And use the same argument as RMS http://stallman.org/ that you still have your copy after the copying. So that must mean that the GPL people still have their software after the companies have copied it. So what have the GPL people to complain about.

Re:Slashdot: News for Lawyers.
Hmm... let me look at the front page.
Linux: Debian to be Marketed to Japan and China Linux (nerd)
Star Wars Sith Trailer and the O.C. Star Wars (nerd)
IT: Virginia Court Overturns Spammer Convictions Law regarding spam? important to IT workers. (vaguely nerd)
Google Calendar Coming Soon? Google (nerd)
IT: New Vulnerabilities Discovered in Firefox 1.0 Security + Firefox = (definately nerd)
Sony Ericsson Announces First Walkman Phone Tech goodies (nerd)
Science: Double-Slit Experiment in Time, Not Space Physics (very nerdy)
Your Rights Online: Appeals Court Sends Eolas Case Back For New Trial Again, yes it's law, but important to people in the software industry. verdict: (nerd)
Linux: LiveCD Lets You Try Out Project Looking Glass ( très nerdy )
Games: More Powerhouse Designers on Next-Gen Xbox video games culture? That would be filed under (nerd).
So, where is this lack of News for Nerds? Only two legal stories on the front page at the time of my posting, one relating to web browser IP infringements, and the other one being SPAM.
I don't think we've been able to find a technical method to stop spam that doesn't suck, so we've now gotta go the legal route. In my experience nerds rely more on digital communications than most non-nerds, so anything that can affect the medium as much as spam becomes important (thus newsworthy) to nerds.
Or do you have this as your Slashdot front page perchance?
And if the amount of legal news still gets your riled up, you can edit your Homepage and take out the "your rights online" and "politics" sections, reducing the offending reports.
I mean, what self respecting nerd would be into politics and law and all that boring stuff??? -

You could look at a homeless man entertaining some parrots, if you are curious. -
Re:[tt] You could see this one coming
I'm with 'ya on that! God knows Open Source can do without the images in the press of RMS picking fleas out of his beard as he pontificates on Socialism.
I have got two points of karma that say: While the parent may be flamebait, he also speaks the truth.
Anyone silly enough to doubt this needs to have a serious look at this craziness. -
Re:In other news...
Indeed!
Anyone here visited http://stallman.org/ ?
"almost always right." is hardly an appropriate assesment. -
More important question
Do they look like rock stars? No. More like 1980s rap stars. Who looks like rock stars then? Kernel hackers. OS hackers look like church music stars and hacker anthropologists look like movie stars. As you see, all of the hackers look like stars, but only kernel hackers look like rock stars, except those who look like sport stars. If you have any other "Ask Slashdot" questions, you know where to find me.

Well, he IS a saint, after all..., so give him some slack :-) -
Unfortunately true....but with his wild long hair and odd behavior, he doesn't fit in with the suit-and-tie crowd. During speaking engagements, Stallman often adopts the persona of "St. IGNUcius," donning a robe and a halo made of a computer disk.
Having RMS walk in in his St. Ignucius getup is enough to make anybody lose their lunch...not just the suit and tie crowd.

Re:Meanwhile...
(BTW didn't Bush's mob FUND terrorists like the taliban a while back???)
Yep. That's what happens when "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" becomes part of foreign policy. The taliban were fighting against the Soviets, so the taliban became the "Good Guys".
Reminds me of a quote from "Things Republicans Believe", available (among other places) at http://www.stallman.org/republicanBeliefs.html
"Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush's daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him and a bad guy when Bush needed a "we can't find Bin Laden" diversion." -
Saint IGNUcius
He came up with a similar phrase to differentiate GNU/Linux when he was doing his Saint IGNUcius (a saint in the "Church of Emacs") skit. As it says on the site:
Emacs was originally a text editor, but it became a way of life and a religion. To join the Church of Emacs, you need only say the Confession of the Faith three times:
There is no system but GNU, and Linux is one of its kernels.
(Notably it's just a joke he does for a laugh, he's not *quite* that mad
;)) -

Freedom, Innovation, and ConvenienceFreedom, Innovation, and Convenience: The RMS Interview by Federico Biancuzzi
12/22/2004Around 20 years ago a programmer at MIT quit his job to develop a complete and free Unix-style operating system--the GNU system. That programmer was Richard Stallman, also known as rms, the founder of the Free Software Foundation.
Since 1984 he has fought for software freedom and created the concept of free software. Software is considered free if users have the following four freedoms:
- The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
- The freedom to study how the program works and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition.
- The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
- The freedom to improve the program and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a precondition.
Copyleft licenses protect these four freedoms. The most prominent license is the GNU General Public License, which allows the author to retain a copyright and permits redistribution and modification under terms designed to ensure that all modified versions of the software remain under copyleft terms.
In this period of threats to freedom, Federico Biancuzzi interviewed this freedom paladin.
FB: GNU/Linux (the complete OS!) is probably the most known free software project. What do you think about the fact that Linux (the kernel!) uses a proprietary program to manage its source code?
RMS: It is unfortunate when anyone uses proprietary software. Using it publicly for the development of a prominent free software package is particularly unfortunate, because it sets a bad example for the community.
FB: Isn't there any free alternative under development?
RMS: There are already free programs that do the same basic job. Linus Torvalds feels they are not convenient enough, and he values convenience more than he values standing firm for freedom. I think that is leading the community in the wrong direction.
As part of the GNU Project, Tom Lord is developing a new free source control system called Arch, which we hope will outdo the proprietary ones.
But just because we are competing with proprietary software on issues of technical merit doesn't mean we think people should choose the program for source control based on technical qualities alone. That would mean assigning zero value to freedom itself. If you value freedom, you will resist the temptation to use a program that takes away your freedom, whatever technical advantages it may have.
FB: What do you think about proprietary software? Does it have low quality? Is it unsecure? Does it restrict freedom too much? Is it unethical?
RMS: Proprietary software is unethical, because it denies the user the basic freedom to control her own computer and to cooperate. It may also be of low quality or insecure, but that's a secondary issue. I will reject it even if it is the best quality in the world, simply because I value my freedom too much to give it up for that.
FB: Would you accept a federal law in the United States to enforce the distribution of source code with every type of software?
RMS: I am not calling for such a law as of now, but I think that would be a valid consumer protection measure--like requiring food products to publish the list of ingredients.
Of course, some software companies would object to this, j

Psychohistory (fictional) emerging? This sound like the precursor science to Isaac Asimov's fictional Psychohistory.
BTW has anybody else noticed the analogies between Asimov's original Foundation series and the adoption of Open Source/Free Licensed Software. We are about heading towards the second Stallman crises : The Merchant Princes.
"So by the same reasoning which make me sure that the Korellians will revolt in favor of prosperty, I am sure we will not revolt against it. The game will be played out to it's end.

Quit using IE and Outlook. 90% of the trouble is gone. Still worse than the competition, but dangerously approaching "reasonable" status.
--Excuse 3 (still valid): "But... but... Windows is closed... M$ is evil... they impose a tax on hardware... they expand and overtake a new software branch every year..."

Girlfriend: "sure, I'm going to stop using the OS I'm used to and surrender years of Windows trial-and-error because of this guy's philosophy." -
If Kerry had won, there'd be no "controversy"
Logic is the stock in trade of softare engineers. Yet when it comes to politics, so many of them are incapable of thinking rationally. I cannot think of a single other condition under which technically minded people will blame the machines before blaming the users.

no more anonymous posting for meSlashdot declares victory over GNAA Pater - Associated Press Michigan, Detroit Office
Slashdot, a prominent news web log claiming to be News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters has claimed victory over the Gay Nigger Association of America (GNAA).
With GNAA's trolls resorting to stale material which was relevant for five minutes about three months ago and enabling anyone to cut and paste a press release using the Open Source philosophy has led to GNAA's demise. Netcraft confirms it.
GNAA's founder timecop was seen locking up the headquarters one last time. An unassuming outdoor mens room deep in the heart of Tennessee was once host to numerous sessions of blowjobs, anal and creampies attended only by homosexual African-Americans. I reckon I jest likes fuckin' girls. White girls. [note broken link] was the only statement given to the press at this time. Former lovers and Windows users Lysol and Roloffle were found standing at half-mast upon the sad but inevitable occasion.
