So - Amy Schumer is going to be the bikini model?
I mean seriously, any time they want to kill male sex-drive these days they tend to inject her into it.
In all seriousness, it's a good time to consider building (or buying) your own Steam Machine. I built my own Wintendo, since everything else I have runs Linux anyways, but Steam is every bit as smooth as the modern game consoles when it comes to navigating with a controller. (I still suggest a PS4 controller over a Steam one - fortunately that works). Unlike the consoles your library stays good as the years go by.
I'm working on coworkers to convince them Steam is a good console alternative, this can catch on. At the price of modern consoles an APU or low to mid range gaming system is reasonable alternative to a console. All we need is to get GOOD non-gaming apps on the console . A Netflix app, a Hulu app, that sort of thing (really - Linux versions is what I'm saying).

Re: Because Linux sucks.
Native games or through Steamplay with Proton? I'm primarily use my PS4 for games, but I have tried a couple of games through Steamplay: Star Trek Online and Fallout 3.
Here's a database of games tested with Proton, which ones do or do not work. The number of working games keeps increasing over time

porting AAA game titles to Linux... not years later as is the norm for games coming to Mac; but often within mere *months* of the windows release. And I don't mean obscure titles, I'm taking the Dooms, Civilizations, Simcities,
I'd seriously like to see you back up your boasts on this one.The Doom series scores about even. OSX is well represented Linux a little less.
In the area of the Civs OSX is very well represented, normally coming out at the same time as the Windows release and Linux falls way short. In fact, Civ V came out for Linux nearly 4 full years after the OSX release. The only other semi-major Civ release that Linux is represented is Alpha Centauri and it is, again, after the OSX release.
SimCity is just like the Civ series, very little Linux representation and none of it is after the Mac/OSX releases.
Just go to Steam. Many Windows title now has a Mac version. SteamOS/Linux? Not so much. Unfortunately I can't find a number of published titles by OS but the "Upcoming" page of the Steam Store shows 40 pages for Mac and 27 for Linux/SteamOS. That's pretty telling.
Even with their own Linux distro it's barely a blip on the radar. Mac is outpacing them by 4 to 1.
Once again, Linux fanboy revises history. Fucking unreal.

Re:Does anyone buy these things?
I've had the original Vive since release, and I still play multiple games, but by far, most of my time is spent in Pavlov VR (https://store.steampowered.com/app/555160/Pavlov_VR/) which is basically a CS:GO knock-off and amazing in a VR experience.
In my opinion, which I'm sure HTC doesn't care about, they're really dropping the ball. I would buy an upgraded Vive in a heart-beat. Notably, a higher resolution is the obvious thing they could improve, but so much more could be done: lighter HMD, slimmer HMD, built-in wireless (current wireless solutions are quite cumbersome), slimmer/lighter cable, cheaper/included ankle trackers, etc.
Instead, they released the VivePro which is barely an upgrade and costs way too much when compared to the Vive. Now they release this Focus Plus thing that, from reading the article, sounds like it has worse tracking than the first vive, and is "targeted at businesses" whatever that means, I suspect it means game experiences will suffer greatly.

Re:Aaaaannd they gimped it with 6gb of ram
As of today 1080 is the most popular gamer resolution by far, 60%.
1024 x 768 0.64%
1280 x 1024 2.16%
1280 x 720 0.42%
1280 x 800 0.82%
1360 x 768 1.95%
1366 x 768 14.02%
1440 x 900 3.60%
1536 x 864 0.25%
1600 x 900 3.60%
1680 x 1050 2.54%
1920 x 1200 0.90%
1920 x 1080 60.48%
2560 x 1080 0.96%
2560 x 1440 3.97%
3440 x 1440 0.48%
3840 x 2160 1.48%
Other 1.73%The next most popular is 768, 14%. So roughly 95% of PC gamers are "not serious" and will be well served by RX 580 as of today, hence #1 bestseller. Future proof? No way, that's not in dispute. But it's a great way to conserve your cash waiting for the next generation to arrive because frankly, the current generation sucks in terms of value for money anywhere outside the 1080p mainstream.
One thing you should not skimp on is VRAM because you are going to get game breaking stutters and stalls if you do.

Re:Aaaaannd they gimped it with 6gb of ram
Says you. Radeon 580 at $190 is the #1 bestseller on Amazon for several weeks.
Check out the Steam Hardware Survey, top 10 cards:
1. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060: 14.31% (-0.49%)
2. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti: 8.99% (+0.04%)
3. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050: 4.99% (+0.03%)
4. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070: 4.19% (+0.17%)
5. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960: 3.37% (-0.07%)
6. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970: 2.93% (-0.03%)
7. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti: 2.85% (0.00%)
8. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080: 2.74% (-0.01%)
9. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M: 1.63% (-0.01%)
10. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti: 1.59% (-0.03%)
(...)
22. AMD Radeon RX 580: 0.79% (+0.15%)Don't get me wrong, +0.15% means they're selling okay in the moment, but it's roughly as much in units as the newly released $1200 RTX 2080 Ti:
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti: 0.15% (+0.15%)
The main reason they lead the $199 market is because nVidia hasn't released a card at that price point for a very long time.

Re:Microsoft : You must update to have updates
https://store.steampowered.com...
Steam has Wine built in nowadays, but it's called Proton as part of its internal usage. This is the list that's compatible, and officially they have Proton enabled by default for these titles: https://steamcommunity.com/gam...
They've also been doing a lot of work and upstreaming features to Wine, like DirectX12 to Vulkan API.

Re:How about game diversity.
5. Are shoot 'em ups still a thing? Yes and no. The old fashioned stuff that I loved -- Defender, etc. -- is pretty much gone from PC unless you get an emulator (hint, hint). It's difficult to get now but Warblade is an exceptional Galaga update. The thing about those older types of game is that they can be put together by just a few people so the indies have pretty much taken over. However, if you have the money, they are in absolute full force on VR and more fun than ever. Find a friend who has a Vive and give Space Pirate Trainer a go. It's like someone did a Tron on you into a Space Invaders arcade machine.
2. There are still tons of platformers. Again, if you're thinking 2D, the indies dominate with games like Fez and Braid. There are still loads of them. If you're willing to move up into first person, there's nothing like Portal. But really, truly, Mario still ticks every box.

GemCraft - Chasing Shadows on Steam
Armor Games has put a version on Steam. I haven't tried it, but more likely than not, it uses AIR, not Flash Player. Though AIR and Flash Player use very similar runtimes, AIR presents less of an attack surface because an application made with AIR is self-contained, not interacting with the web browser in the same way that an SWF object does.

Re:The sales models have changed. Also BR is requi
Launching without a BR mode for a multiplayer based game today is suicide.
For crappy, arcadey, mass-produced bullet sponge shooters, maybe. But hardcore, tactical shooters seem to be doing just fine without them. Only problem (if you can call it that) with that game is that everything barring cosmetics are unlocked from the get go so there are almost too many weapons/attachments/loadouts to figure out and get comfortable with at first.

Re:Good news!
AMD lagging is an Nvidia-created myth.
It's not a myth, it's a fact that PC gamers overwhelmingly prefer nvidia. AMD has only ~5% more of that market than Intel does with its embedded GPUs!

Re:People keeping their jackphones.
All these show that newer isn’t always better
That's not correlation given the numbers that we're talking. That's just a sign that people hang onto things because they cannot afford to upgrade, they see no reason to upgrade, or they do not want to upgrade (e.g., because they enjoy retro gaming).
Steam's results show that it's also untrue relative to Windows XP being more popular than Windows 8.1 -- it is only a little more popular than Windows 8.1 running 32-bit, but an order of magnitude less popular than Windows 8.1 running 64-bit. People still running Windows XP are not a market worth capturing given that Windows XP has been unsupported for years and thus has many public security issues. Worse, the vast majority of Windows XP installs are limited to 32-bit and 32-bit Windows has its own security weaknesses.
The CRT gamers are few and far between also. Even just Googling it shows that.
Finally, the headphone jack is something that matters to everyone, yet Google and Samsung has dropped it alongside Apple. It's done. The only convergence left to do is for Apple to switch to USB-C on the iPhone, just like they did on the iPad Pro. I know that people love their headphone jacks, but I can count on my hands the number of time that it has come in handy given that I use Bluetooth.
People that cared did not speak up loudly enough with their wallets when the headphone jack was dropped, and frankly, having a phone that can survive a dip into the sink has more value for a lot of people than having a headphone jack (I know multiple people that have lost phones due to limited water exposure).
The headphone-having phones will remain an interesting niche staple for a few years, but they're done. Pretty soon you'll own a nice pair of USB-C headphones or Bluetooth headphones. If you don't, then I do not really blame you, but that ship is not coming back to port (pun intended).
And finally the 17" MBP is not coming back. They stopped sold enough of them by the time that they killed that lineup and, across the industry, the 17" is largely non-existent now. Apple, more than many others, only makes what it can mass produce, which enables larger profit margins, and they cannot reasonably mass produce 17" laptops with any level of customization.
Most importantly, Apple stopped caring about the niches that moved larger groups to purchases when Steve Jobs died. Jobs was an utter asshole, but the man knew how to sell products. Tim Cook has been coasting the entire time that he has been CEO, and the cracks are finally showing (I expected it to happen back when the iPhone 7 should have been the iPhone 6SS and the iPhone 8 should have been the iPhone 6SSS or iPhone 7S at best).
In their computer lineup, look at the death and resurgence of the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro only because people did speak with their wallets. In their laptop lineup, look at the Touchbar and inferior keyboards (to their own previous models!). No one wants the Touchbar in particular, but everyone is forced to pay for it and pretend that it's somehow superior to a touchscreen because Apple is afraid of destroying their iPad companion device sales.
I work at a silicon valley company and, when I joined over 4 years ago it was easily 99% MacBook Pros across the company. Since the Touchbar was released, it has easily become only 70% across the company (with a healthy mix of Microsoft Surfaces, Dells, and a few Lenovos) and falling.
Personally, I have the latest generation MacBook Pro with the Touchbar, but I keep it hooked up on my desk primarily with a separate keyboard and mouse. Only when I travel do I get stuck with the Touchbar. I love the iOS integration across the Apple lineup with texts and iMessages going to both devices seamlessly. I also enjoy the integration with my Apple Watch. But, I will give it up, and probably sooner if Apple makes the decision to allow t

Re:I have reasonable confidence when I buy on Stea
I have reasonable confidence when I buy on Steam that I will continue owning that game, at least to the extent you can own a digital object.
And that extent is near-zero. Steam games come with DRM. You don't own the things you bought. Valve allows you to do some things because they feel like it. They have a track record and they're flush with cash at the moment, but if that changed they could simply pull the plug and walk away. They could also selectively screw over individuals. If your account is banned you cannot log in, download, or play any of your games. As a policy, they will not tell you why your account is banned, simply stating you violated their terms of service.

Instead of pulling numbers out of your ASS (which makes you look like an idiot) why don't you actually LOOK at the data such as STEAM users:
* Around 0.37% use 1280 x 720
* Around 12.62% use 1366 x 768
* Around 64.29% use 1920 x 1080.Where the fuck are you getting "95% of PC gamers" from??? Do you even USE a PC ???
> but what the fuck has that got to do with playing on a monitor or TV where you don't get motion sickness because you still have your peripheral vision?
FALSE.
My wife gets motion sickness at > 30 fps on both TV and monitors.
More proof that you don't know what the fuck you are talking about.
Why don't you actually TALK to people doing VR and LEARN about issues instead of spouting nonsense.
First, your argument was:
console gamers are some of the most demanding 60 fps
which is FALSE.
a) Oh look at that shitty 30 FPS, even on PS4 Pro:
* Destiny 2
* Horizon Zero Dawnb) Let's ALSO conveniently ignore that fact that Arcade gamers and PCs gamers have enjoyed 60 FPS _long_ before console gamers did.
c) Let's ignore tablet and phones now targeting 120 FPS
Now you are shifting the goal posts to some bullshit "competitive FPS" line.
> console gamers enjoy fixed 60 fps in all modern competitive FPS games.
Except NOT all (console) games run at 60 fps. THAT's the point.
So much for console gamers "demanding" 60 FPS when there is ZERO sales data to support it.
> console gamers are some of the most demanding 60 fps even when it doesn't make sense
WHEN does it not make sense to run at 60 FPS ???
If you can't even run the UI at 60 FPS you are doing it wrong.

B-O-R-I-N-G and over-rated
Maybe its just me but I personally thought Myst was boring and over-rated.
* Took me two weekends to finish it off. I thought the puzzles were rather simple / easy.
* Story was meh -- I don't even remember it these days. Guess it was "that" good.
/sarcasm* I didn't play it when it initially came out. I did a few years after when I was taking a break from my Quake / CTF / TF fix -- maybe ~1998 ? The entire time I was wondering "Why can't I look up/down?" Yes, I know the scenes were pre-rendered (looked good) and saved as static images but I wanted to _explore_ the world and not just in a "slide show" fashion.
Anyone else feel the same way?
Has anyone played realMYST ? How does it compare?

Re:Too bad early 3D paged poorly
Making a pixel art game today invites comparisons to SNES and Genesis in reviews. Things like "I felt like I could be playing this on my SNES" are (generally) considered compliments.
Is the compliment specifically that a game looks and feels like the fourth gen (Genesis and Super NES), not the third (NES and Master System)? Because some 2010s pixel art games, such as Lizard and The Curse of Possum Hollow , can also be purchased on an NES cartridge.
(Disclosure: I contributed to Curse.)

Re:Fixing open source...
Hmm, even with small games isn't the content more critical than the code?
No they both matter, consider racing games - most of the need for speeds post Most wanted 2005 have sucked BECAUSE the mathematical characteristics of the cars feel off, aka you can't go and modify the physics code and change the car feel. The way the game feels to drive makes or breaks a racing game. The problem here is the tools that make the content are languishing. If in doubt go pick up a copy of Overload on steam and the level editor. Just tool around inside it for a bit. Notice that it has been one of the few games recently released to have a full blown level editor, an even better example is the original NWN. The problem is something like NWN was going in interesting directions but publishers cut it and have fucked up gaming royally going for gambling and selling skins bs. It's the main reason why AAA games have a content crisis, we get these short bursts of movie like games where they focus on sticking a bit of movie inside it because hollywood is easier for the industry to understand then the pure abstract mechanics of games that built the industry like doom 2 for instance.

Re:Nvidia sleeps well at night.
Most of the curved screens have a pretty low vertical number of pixels rendering them pretty useless for anything but gaming through a letterbox opening.
Which ones have that? The majority of the wide curved displays have a resolution of 3440x1440 which is about 30% more than the 1080p that majority of gamers (~63%) use and is actually in the 98th percentile of vertical resolution for gaming users.

Re:Upstreaming
All changes are upstreamed to the Wine project as they said in their FAQ, located here: https://store.steampowered.com... internally it's their packaged version with changes for Steam specific support but otherwise just Wine. Open source, and sources here: https://github.com/ValveSoftwa...

Re:Thank you AMD
2700X is widely recognized as a perfectly good gaming part,
Steam CPU Statistics
Look at all that recognition! What, AMD Steam share up from 11% in March to 15% in July? Undone by your own link.
By the way, you have a crap posting style, you come across as a pimply teen taking revenge on the internet for being bullied.

Re:Thank you AMD
That's a fool's game.
That's like, your opinion, man.
There is always a faster one next quarter.
So? There's always a faster car next year too. Liking fast cars doesn't make me stupid. It means I have disposable income.
You mean crap games, not yet using Vulkan/D12.
No. That's not what I meant at all. And that's a pretty bone-headed correlation for you to make. Do I need to point out how stupid it is, or can we forget you said it?
Beyond that- you *are* correct that the margin is very much reduced or inverted with the 2 DX12/Vulkan games out there. And "kills" is a wild exaggeration.
No, it's not. Usually between a 10-30% lead in performance. That's killing, sorry.
2700X is widely recognized as a perfectly good gaming part,
By you, sure.
Why speculate?
Steam CPU Statistics Look at all that recognition!built for the future instead of the past
Vomit. Please. It's just another processor. It's built to make money, that's it.
and also the best workstation in class.
You've got a real argument here.
Cores to spare, aggregate throughput without peer.
If only that mattered to people.
I recognize that a lot of people are fucking stupid, I will give you that. Nutrition may not matter to them either.
Wait, who's the idiot here? The person picking up the processors with better performance for their average workload, or the person picking up 32-core machines desperately looking for a use for them?

Nova the Squirrel on Itch
So instead of copying a ROM let's just copy the idea of the ROM. Create new games that play like Mario or Donkey Kong but don't use the copyrighted (copywritten?) characters. Let's build an "app store" for old 8 & 16 bit style games that aren't custom written.
We already have one: Itch Direct. There's already a platformer inspired by Mario and Kirby titled Nova the Squirrel by Joshua Hoffman, distributed by its author as an NES ROM that runs in an emulator or on a PowerPak or EverDrive. If you like it, you may also like The Curse of Possum Hollow by Retrotainment Games (also on Steam) or Lizard by Brad Smith.
And if Nintendo or some other company tries to say their "idea" was stolen, simply point to Facebook and FarmVille that was copied.
Until the victim of this "copying" lawyers up in earnest. Then you get things like Tetris v. Xio (2012).
