SuSE now has RC2 Binaries available, complete except for updated bindings and i18n. Packages are also available via apt. The page hasn't been updated, but the 3.3 RC2 RPMs are indeed there.

Still working on downloading everything, so I can't give my impression yet.

For those who were wondering, yes there was an RC1, but they intentionally didn't announce it. Apparently some major bugs were discovered after preparing the tarballs but before making the announcement, so they scrapped that and fixed the bugs to make RC2.

There's more. This January, 12 remotely exploitable buffer overflow bugs were found in Gaim. Less than a week ago, the SuSE security team found another remotely exploitable buffer overflow. (Scroll down.) Those found in January should be fixed as far as I can tell.

Besides webmin, the CUPS web interface and some other nice GUIs for generic, cross-distro sysadmin, I would pick the big commercial three, Fedora, Suse and Mandrake and showcase their admin tools. They have gotten pretty friendly these days (not so sure about Fedora though), and you can pretty much configure everything from the same "control center" or whatever the name. I think it is important to show people how easy and graphical GNU/Linux has gotten. I still hear people telling me "ah, Linux, yes, it is like DOS, you type everything in a console right ?"

i tried suse the other week. modem and wireless card don't work with linux. not buying new ones. back to windows for me.

I'd hold on until we see a real Linux desktop like Xandros or SUSE on Dell before I get excited.

Why nor use a Linux boot CD like Knoppix or SuSe? If you don't have a CD-ROM, a hard drive isn't that expensive. I understand the power savings part, but you might only be able to do so much with a non bootable USB port.

How is any normal person supposed to cope with a distribution that doesn't even bootload all the time?

That's just it, normal people aren't supposed to cope with the distribution at all. I don't know how so many could miss it, but if you even just skim through the obvious pre-install sections of fedora.redhat.com you'll see plenty that makes it clear that Fedora is not meant for everyone. It's meant for people who like working or playing with bleeding-edge components. If you want to work or play with a distribution that doesn't ever bite you and you wound up on fedora.redhat.com, you made a wrong turn somewhere. Try redhat.com, debian.org, slackware.org, suse.com, mandrakesoft.com or any of a number of other sites for which I'll probably get blasted for having failed to include them here. When you land at one go to their download section or on-line store and look for the phrase 'latest stable release'. What you'll find there is meant for everyone and will, generally, work right out of the box

This will change as Linux gains acceptance (recall the days where applications only ran on UNIX systems and eventually vendors started to add MS Win32 support). Drivers also suffer a similar fate.

As for the administrator cost, the TCO is debatable. The company I work for pays basically the same rates for administrators on either platform. This also applies to any of my previous employers (although skills with MS Exchange and Active Directory seem to demand higher prices than the equivilent skilled workers on UNIX systems).

As a linux user, I feel offended. I think the likes of Mandrake or Suse would be a MUCH better idea.

This should help the adoption rate of SUSE, much like it did for Red Hat.
This is not new: On SuSE's Ftp Server, you will find these ftp-installs are available at least since SuSE 8.0. The ftp-install has always been available a few weeks after the disc release.

• One good reason to think that they can do this right is their aquisition of the creators of RAV Anti-Virus last year. RAV was a great multiplatform (including Linux) Anti-Virus tool. Best configuration: external SMTP (MTA) using Postfix/Qmail with RAV Anti-Virus acting as a Gateway for internal-only Exchange 2000 server. I don't think that will be a config option with MSFT's "new" product, but whatever they got would surely be worth looking at.

Where is SUSE's own repository?

Find the nearest mirror and browse to 9.1/i386 (and similarly the contribs are found from those mirrors) whatever and set it up in Yast. Should be rather self-explanatory. Personally what I think about distributions that support this type of installation from ftp/http/etc is that there should be some sort of semiautomatic configuration of suitable security update mirrors and other packages during the installation. At least I install everything from the internet instead of looking for that dvd that I've lost somewhere on my desk. With the security updates it is not only convenient, but also quite important.

It was also a little bizarre to install a Linux and find out that it didn't include gcc and make. I realize that Personal is targeted at home users, but it just feels strange.

You're mistaken. They are included, they just have to be chosen during installation (maybe you didn't choose any development-related options during installation?)

OTOH I'm not sure how flexible the installer is. For instance, there didn't seem to be any way to do a non-default partitioning scheme, preserve some partitions, install GRUB, etc.; but maybe the option was there, and I just didn't notice it.

All of the mentioned things are available, or at least used to be. I've not tried SUSE 9.1 very profoundly myself yet (not on my own comp yes, except with a live cd), but in 9.0 at least you can choose betw. GRUB and Lilo, configure both of em. And the partitioning tool handles customized partition setups well, you just have to choose the Advanced option when installing, or something on the lines of that... And quite contrary to the normal misconceptions, you won't cause yourself any problems by mixing your manual conf-file editing with Yast's functionality (any more than you could cause problems with making mistakes in conf files anyways). The autogenerated ones you shouldn't touch are always marked with a comment in the beginning and nearly always in those cases there's another file included with that conf file with which you can meddle as much as you want :)
