Yes, OS X, BSD, and the various Linux distributions (i.e. Debian, Mandrake, SUSE, or RedHat ). All easy to install, all easy to maintain, all easy to use. OS X comes pre-installed by the OEM and an increasing number of Linux distros are, too.

Furthermore, the layered structure of the OSes and separation of privileges means that these are resistent to future viruses as well as immune to those available today. Yes, apologists and astroturfers like to ignore that as well as blame users. But even if, and that's a big if, market share has more effect than design flaws, it will take quite some time for the virus activity to shift and during that time, businesses and users have come out ahead. Right now, die hard ideologs who refuse to drop a defective product are costing billions of dollars per quarter, a not insignificant number when you think how many jobs could be kept rather than downsized or outsourced in these increasingly bad economic times for the U.S.

How about a little focus? The title should have been "An Unprecedented level of MS Virus Alerts" and steer users off of the hamster wheel. From easy to hard, these are just a few of the many options:

FYI, SuSE produces Knoppix-like bootable CD called "SUSE LINUX for i386 Live-Eval". I revieved a copy via a magazine. It is kinda slow and not the best for using from the CD-ROM, but it provides a good intro and demo of SuSE Linux without having to install it to your hard drive.

Notes: I recommend that you try it if you have enough memory - 256MB isn't enough,but 512MB or 768MB should work well (since it has to be loaded into RAM with no HDD install). I perfer Fedora Core 1, but my advice should give you an easy way to try SuSE.

SuSE does offer a service to keep some things more recent. Their KDE Service might be what you're looking for. Unfortunatly I've had my share of wierd problems when upgrading KDE through this method. Going from KDE 3.1 to 3.2 didn't go well at all. Going from 3.1 to 3.2.1 went okay, although there are more than a few quirks.

I've never used Gentoo, but as a FreeBSD user (which uses ports that portage is based off of), I'd say you're probably better off with Gentoo for bleeding edge and updated stuff.

This is one of the reasons why I prefer SuSE to say mandrake. SuSE provide rpms for new versions of major packages like KDE and GNOME and Xfree86 on their FTP site. They also backport them for several versions.

Just to clarify for those people interested if you go to SuSE's site they do offer the ability to install SuSE Linux via FTP online install, the only ISO's they offer for download are their Live-Eval. To those of us that are users this approach seems stupid, we want our CD's damn it. but from a business standpoint I can see where SuSE is coming from, if my memory serves me right, which it rarely does, SuSE use to offer their ISO's for download, but these take up an incredible amount of bandwidth, and since most of us never use all the apps contained in the SuSE Linux disto that becomes and large amount of essentially wasted bandwidth. The approach SuSE now uses allows someone to get SuSE Linux and just the apps they will use for free without wasting that bandwidth.

The down side to SuSE's approach is that many people don't always know exactly what they will use when performing an install, every time I perform an install I forget on or two apps that I need, using SuSE's online approach this equates out to a lot of time downloading where by having the ISO's I could simply pop in the disk and be done with it.

I would urge everyone that has a problem with this to take it up with Novell/SuSE directly because as good as it may make you feel complaining about it on /. it will most likely have a greater chance of changing the problem if SuSE know how many people want an ISO option. Make it worth SuSE's time and money to offer ISO's, they are a buisness after all.

You've never heard of SuSE Enterprise Edition.

That's what we IBM'ers have been using on mainframe Linux for years. That's also the version that recently acquired the first level of Common Criteria Certification (the new Orange Book if you follow that sort of thing).

Interestingly, from SuSe's FAQ:

Will there be a PPC edition of SUSE Linux 9.0?

Answer: no.

Although Suse once had a PPC port, it is clearly stagnant; this investment from IBM very likely means that it'll be revived, but that'll take a least some doing. Yellow Dog Linux remains the best choice to run Linux on your Mac, apparently, even the one with an IBM processor.

Linux is great because it's free

You can find install CDs on SuSE's site. It's basically just a boot CD that runs a simple configuration utility and then downloads and installs everything. Once done you have a complete SuSE Linux system. I don't mind paying, but free beer just tastes better.

There is a ncurses version and best of all you can find all the options and menus in the same places as you would with the X version - very consistent. It's funny I replied to another poster earlier today who was complaining about YaST being "closed source". This is great news because hopefully now we can put this "non-gpl" argument behind us and support Novell & SUSE with our wallets on May 6th when SUSE 9.1 becomes available. Or pre-order it now - I don't know from where though. I do remember seeing a link somewhere during a Google search.

In the case of multiple installs, you can still copy the whole installation tree to a local machine and make it available via local network. This is also recommended by SUSE. I usually buy the install media and make them available on the local network... makes it very easy to install additonal software later on our machines.

Huh? How is it closed source exactly? SUSE notes here that you can use, distribute and modify YaST as long as you clearly mention something along the lines of "This is a modified version of YaST" and that "SuSE will not provide support for it". The other main restriction is that the modified sources should be available to everyone else. Any other FUD that you would like to spew out?

The first time I set up NWN under Linux and ran it under TWM I almost came all over myself! It gave me better graphics, better performance, and a better gaming experience. Thank you Bioware, Nvidia, and Suse.

SuSE has a great installer for Nvidia drivers in 9.x. I do not know about their support of ATI because I do not run ATI cards. It still requires exiting X befoire the install, but the documentation on both SuSE's web site and Nvidia's web site is user friendly enough to walk most users through that step.

many companies don't port their games to Linux on the sole basis that they 1. don't want to release source and 2. don't want to take the time to write an installer which can accomodate every distro's different package management, directory layout, and dependency tree.

I cannot speak directly to the installer issues, but Bioware seems to have solved these problems quite well. I do know that they are NOT releasing source for the Linux version of NWN.

If you want a single 'client' at all locations, you probably want to use webmail.

Or you could use evolution, which solves this all quite nicely by speaking to all of the various protocols involved and presenting a single UI (which, while highly derivative of Outlook, improves on it in a huge number of very helpful ways).

Evolution can also talk to unified groupware suites such as Exchange (via Ximian's proprietary connector) or to Open Exchange (SuSE provides a connector). You can also write your own connector for whatever groupware suite you like.

No... your security, and your job, relies on what people do on their jobs. People who work for:

IBM

Sun

HP

RedHat

Mandrake

SuSE

Sendmail, Inc.

...and many more companies that support OSS. There was a point in time where OSS was largely written and maintained by people in their spare time; these days, there are people who have jobs that revolve around developing, maintaining and improving OSS.

There's still crud out there, of course. Remember Sturgeon's law: 90% of everything is crud. This goes for both commercial and open source software. You should evaluate OSS the same way you evaluate commercial software: who wrote it, what's their reputation, does it have the features we need, how stable is it, etc.

You wouldn't judge Microsoft's capabilities based on the kind of software that Sun produced, would you? Then why would derive your opinion of Apache, Sendmail, Bind, Linux, XFree86, BSD, KDevelop, Gnome and the like based on the fact that some other, completely seperate OSS project isn't worth dreck?
