Re:British cars
Because they haven't figured out how to make them leak oil yet!
As long as they can still let out smoke, they can qualify for production in the UK.

Re:Turn signals are a good thing
Actually they do come with turn signals, but they use special synthetic DOT 7 blinker fluid that is difficult to find and most oil change shops are unaware of this need as they can barely remember to change the oil filter. As this needs to be changed with every oil change the signals cease to function after a short time of neglect. This is much like the Lucas wiring harness smoke that people would in inadvertently let out of their older British vehicles.

Re:Outbreak Of Sanity
You do know that you can disable multiple unnecessary processes from that list, right?
Notably:
1) acrotray.exe - Adobe Acrobat Reader tray helper, not necessary to load on startup to read .pdf files
2) ehmsas.exe - ***Media Center Media Status Aggregator, can unload if you're not using the Vista Media Center
3) ehtray.exe - ***Media Center Tray Applet, same as #2
4) ipoint.exe - Can unload if you can settle for a normal mouse instead of your IntelliMouse (or don't need the 'extra button mapping' feature)
5) iTunesHelper.exe - iTunesHelper is only for launching iTunes when you plug in your iPod/iPhone (maybe syncing as well?)
6) itype.exe - Can unload if you use the default keyboard instead of the Intellitype Pro (or maybe 'extra mapping' see #4)
7) jusched.exe - JUSched is a monthly Update Scheduler for Java, can be unloaded
8) mobsync.exe - Can unload if you're not using the Mobile Microsoft Sync Center
9) MoeMonitor.exe - MOE Monitor can be unloaded if you're not using the Live Mesh, otherwise keep
10) wmdc.exe - Windows Mobile Device Center can be unloaded if you're not using it
11) wmpnscfg.exe - Network Sharing for WMP can be unloaded as well if you're not using it
*** - Disclaimer: Some places recommend not to disable these two (and maybe others), but I have done so without any problems (presumably because I don't use the Vista Media Center). Your results may vary, I'm not liable, etc.
That's over half of the list (11/21) and I'm sure there are other optional ones (NVIDIA Driver helper service sounds like one).
If you'd like to run unnecessary programs to add to the total, however, I would* recommend BonziBuddy as well with the familiar mascot.
* - No, I would not . -
Re:A better idea
Right, or one of these, into one of these.
Why yes, I'm drinking this extra large diet coke for the environment. -
Re:Whaddaya mean, 'fiction'?
Hm. No, I don't really need to do all that. What I'm thinking of is one of these without the actual variable bit. The further I space the plates from each other the higher the voltage tolerance of the cap would be, but the stored charge lessens. If I was to evacuate a chamber for the cap I'd have the very best possible dielectric, but that's effort I'm no interested in. Instead I figure I'd have a number or large metal plates stacked up with about an inch or so in between them.
If I really wanted to use an oil dielectric, I could just pour castrol oil from high up in a thin, thin stream. That way I'd get the air bubbles out without worrying about vacuum. -
Re:pay doublei'm in this rock band. we are, as one local journalist stated, "startlingly unsuccessful". so, we record and release a compact disc. it's a run of 500 and we sell, maybe, ten (thanks mom!) and lose a tonne of money. this is not an unusual scenario.
but the kicker is this: we pay the levy on the blank cd's we use for our release. this means that some major-label canadian artist (ms. levign perhaps) is actually making money off of my band's record while my band is losing money.Well, all you have to do is join the American Federation of Musicians, then apply to the Canadian Private Copying Collective for a zero-rating on the levy.
That should save you $105 on your purchase of 500 blanks (yes, $0.21 on ea.!!), and after the $60 application fee for the zero-rating and the $112.00 annual AFM dues plus the $115 initiation fee, you'll have saved -$182
...oh.I was archiving field recordings on blank media, and paying a levy. At some point, I just broke down and started downloading mp3's so that I didn't feel so ripped off.
-
Re:pay double
Taking Sweden as an example, there they tax all storage media (not just "removable" media) with this levy. Actually it's not really a tax (taxing illegal activities is illegal itself), but a state protected fee which a private organization is allowed to collect and without insight into how, distribute parts of the sum to a secret list of copyright holders.
canada has a similar law, although it only applies to removable media such as blank cds. now, normally i like the levy, since it helps keep the copyright rottweilers at bay, but consider this...

Re:Telus Sucks
You can easily change what MAC address Telus has recorded, BTW. I don't recall the address offhand, but you can go to a web site and have it autodetect your current MAC address and use that, or you can even type it in manually if you need to. Quite handy if you buy a new PC.
PS - Unless they've changed it recently, Telus has always offered two dynamic IP address, and as such you could register two MAC addresses. Or at least I have the option for two IP addresses.
PPS - I just looked it up, and the address for the registration web site is British Columbia: http://oca.bc.hsia.telus.net/ or Alberta: http://oca.ab.hsia.telus.net/

Cultural differences?I agree that wikipedia shouldn't be used as an authoratative source, and that it makes a good starting point.
Perhaps the term "thesis" in China is different from the Western term, with different expectations? This article mentioned an emphasis on "a lot of background information" in essay writing and that the "argumentative essay" was a somewhat foreign idea. I recall hearing similar criticism of the Chinese essay format anecdotally.

Spreadsheet version
Kinda hard to compare one card against another if it's not in a spreadsheet. It's even harder if it's spread-out across a dozen different web pages. Here's the spreadsheet version because MSOffice rocks and all: http://www3.telus.net/cspowart/boing/vidcards.xls

I think it's a great idea!I ended up writing an essay of sorts to respond to this item. It's long -- I decided not to waste the time of anyone not interested in what I had to say, so I am not posting it here. The short-short version is that:
- This is a good thing
- it is an emergent property of email technology and the role of email in everyday life
- it happens because email forms a chain of events related to your life that maintains temporal and spatial relations of information
- this is good for finding things you might want again
- I think services like GMail need to expand on this idea and continue to add features that make email a better personal database -- searchable on more axies, and good at filtering out the noise

Re:The Worst.
Okay, I've got to ask this - is there no such thing as an undelete utility for Linux? According to many reports in comments to this story, undeleting is possible but is a really tedious manual process. Does rm delete too thoroughly for an automated tool to reconstruct anything? And if it does, should it? Why not leave enough information behind to reconstruct files unless they've already been overwritten?
For the interested, here's an undelete tool for Windows. Note that it also works for NTFS! Took me a while to find a util that does this - FAT undeleters are extremely common, but when I looked for NTFS undeleters, I mostly found commercial tools. This one is free and does not need to be installed and it actually works. -

Re:QuestionCheck these out: For a 400 s specific impulse, getting to mach 3 requires a 1.276 takeoff to payload ration. On the other, making Mach 25 requires 7.66 takeoff to payload ration. That's why Spaceship One is self contained, whilst the Shuttle requires vast external fuel tanks and external boosters. It's hardly trivially easy.

Magic Mud
When I was a kid we called this Magic Mud.

Meaning of $$$ in Company Names
Wildly off-topic (and FYIW IMO parent and grandparent are childish), but I think the $ sign is supposed to represent bribery and corruption (rather than just having lots of money). I don't know if they started it, but it was popularised by Greenpeace's use of "Stop E$$O"*.
I must admit in view of recent behaviour of the EC (in relation to Microsoft, software patents, and other things), I have started abbreviating them to €C sometimes.
[*Incidentally, although this was allowed under copyright &c because it is a parody, Esso attempted to claim that it was illegal in France because the dollar looks like an (illegal-in-France Nazi) inverted swastika. Needless to say, Esso's case was eventually thrown out of court (after Esso succesfully got a preliminary injunction banning the use of E$$O)]

No idea if it works...
-
Re:Not applicable to most spamI found a perl script that generates the checksum for a credit card number.. I used that to write a very short program to generate plausible credit card numbers -- enough to force the spammmers to verify the card (and piss off MC/VISA).
Given that there's no expectation of the card actually passing verification (and it's going to a random address), I doubt that it's against any law (if they try to sue me over it, I'll be happy to drag them thru the mud).
