Re:Lots of people
distinction between a private company and a gov't-influenced/controlled organization there is fuzzy and difficult to ascertain
Actually, it is very easy to ascertain: there no distinction. Every Chinese abroad, who still has relatives in China, is subject to blackmail. And many — though not all, of course — are willing to help their government voluntarily.

Re: And?
Correct, they won't be found guilty of anything related to Trump or the campaign. They'll be found guilty of crimes committed years before the campaign related to taxes, but absolutely nothing connected to the campaign.
Oh look, that is exactly what happened. Manafort guilty of 8 counts of tax fraud from 12 years ago, Cohen pleading to tax fraud and bank fraud for his taxi business. So just because his highly partisan Clinton fixer attorney convinced him to agree to plead to something that isn't a crime, that doesn't mean a damn thing. Bradley Smith former FEC chairman has explained there is no FEC violation.
Paying off people to keep quite is not a crime and is not a campaign contribution according to the FEC unless campaign funds were used. A plea deal is not a conviction, no evidence has been presented. And the noise about Trump being an "un-indicted co-conspirator" is crap as well. As Alan Dershowitz said even if Cohen plead to a real crime, doesn't mean Trump committed one. Trump has the full right to use his money to "catch and kill" any negative stories. And a candidate is allowed to spend as much of his own money on his campaign as he likes, there is no contribution cap for the candidates themselves.
This is no different than a candidate selling a foreign car and buying and American made car to "influence an election". As long as no campaign funds were used, there is no crime. And no one has claimed or has evidence of campaign funds being used. It isn't like he funneled $12m in campaign funds through Cohen or something.
But let's put this in perspective - if you think Trump buying these stories to hide them is an illegal campaign contribution intended to influence the election then you must also agree that NBC buying the Hollywood Access video and releasing it in October was also an illegal campaign contribution to Clinton that was explicitly intended to influence the election, right?

So-Called Locals . . .
So-Called Locals: The Road to Corporate Taxation in Seattle
Over the past decade large capital flows --- frequently if not mostly of money laundering and speculation origin --- have poured into the Pacific Northwest, from Vancouver, Canada, to King County (Seattle), Washington, USA.
During the last mayoral election, candidate Cary Moon, along with Councilmember Lisa Herbold, raised the issue of external impacts on our local housing market. A logical critique, given reports by local realtors of a 70% unoccupied rate of recently purchased homes --- obviously not purchased to be lived in! The candidate for mayor who would later be elected, Jenny Durkan, along with other elected politicians, pushed back against any investigation into rampant real estate/housing speculation, citing that bugaboo of the political theater crowd, racism. (As Trump won the presidential election thanks to low voter turnout, an even lower voter turnout in Seattle --- at 37% of registered voters --- ensured Durkan's victory as mayor --- a sad day for the American electorate all around! Interestingly, they both won with around the same percentage of votes.)
When Gary Gensler was chief of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission during the Obama Administration, he instigated a study of futures trades, long claimed to be done for "hedging purposes," and found that over 90% were pure speculation trades, only done for quick profit and market manipulation. (Price setting, which occurs in the futures markets)
Although so-called pundits at Fox may refer to Seattle as a "socialist hellhole" --- Seattle has long been run as the personal fiefdom of the rich through their influential Community Devleopment Roundtable (with tenant rights having been essentially missing over the past century).
http://archive.seattleweekly.c...
https://www.thestranger.com/se...
Along with that rampant money laundering/speculative capital flows into local real estate (also involving private equity/leveraged buyouts of local apartment buildings, etc.), many financial/economic forces worked together to drive up housing prices: the destruction of local affordable housing, with the replacement of high-end condos and rentals, while local jobs were displaced in the corporate rush to offshore labor, leading to an extreme tightening of the housing market, further aggravated by the recent surge and influx of new Amazon employees.
The employment picture was exacerbated by Amazon's (and Bezos') destruction, both locally and nationally, of thousands of book and record stores in its march to be the One World Retail Corporation! Add to that the cited 50% first-year turnover rate for new hires at Amazon (for whatever myriad reasons???) and consequently one observes a general rise in rental rates. (I.e., both supply and demand --- and turnover --- drive up the rates as landlords typically jack up rental rates each time an apartment becomes vacant.)
With Amazon's traditional history of tax avoidance,
https://itep.org/amazon-inc-pa...
it is no surprise of their strong push back against the recent city council measure.
As cities in Canada (and throughout the Americas and Europe) have raised taxes on foreign purchases of local real estate, it is almost logical that Seattle would follow a similar trajectory.
An excellent recent financial article in the Epoch Times further explains how the banking system drives up housing prices.

Re:Flat earth for the in crowd:
You could actually read my "entire argument". My posts are only a couple sentences each and there aren't many of them.
Phony indictments of people you'll never face in court aren't an indication of anything. The thing you said was "clear" because of indictments and guilty pleas is not "clear" because neither the indictments nor the guilty pleas have any bearing on the Russian collusion story.
Now you actually know the facts, so that's something.
https://www.theepochtimes.com/...
The lawyer for one of the indicted companies told the court that the other indicted company didn't even exist during the time the "crimes" were committed. If you still think it's all "clear", (versus, you know, not entirely clear) then that's some motivated reasoning — which is what my original post talked about.

Re:Artificial Intelligence kills 2 in one week
Why are we allowing corporations to "debug" their cars on our roads? You have no concept of reality. 700 deaths on US roads. What would the number be if every car was using Tesla's autonomous technology? It might be 10,000 deaths per week. How would you know?
There are these things called multiplication and division. There are 250 M cars on the road according ot this:
https://www.statista.com/stati...
About 200k Teslas have been sold, which is recent enough that most of them should still be on the road. 200k / 250M = 0.08%
There are 40k deaths per year , according to this:
http://www.nsc.org/NewsDocumen...
so we would expect 0.08% of that in deaths with Teslas, so that is 32 deaths. So to a first approximation, Tesla is very safe, since you do not have another news story every other week about someone having died in a Tesla.
Now one might want to adjust for the type of driving done, where autopilot only drives well on high ways, where maybe the death rate is less. The number is knowable, though, and it is definitely not 10 000 per week.
You're comparing apples to oranges, under 24 and over 75 represent about 65% of road fatalities. Those aren't demographics who drive Teslas. Accidents also skew towards lower-income groups who tend to drive more irresponsibly (alcohol or speed), again not Tesla drivers.
You've also got single vehicle crashes that claim multiple lives. Driving with kids is dangerous because of the potential distraction they pose, but do you really think many Tesla drivers are using the auto-pilot with their kids? Or drive in fresh snow with poor traction?
The auto-pilot is overwhelmingly used by upper-middle class to wealthy people who are old enough to drive responsibly, young enough to drive competently, and are driving in ideal road conditions without occupants, and usually driven in cities (which highways are much more dangerous). Plus some of those cars are older and lack new safety features.
As you pointed out we don't know the proper adjustment, but I can see a lot of factors that should make Telsa owners responsible for far less than 32 deaths per year.

Re: Cue the Nazi snowflakes
No, but maybe you did
Obviously, since that wasn't the only case now was it. In fact it's a repeated history of a busybody telling people that they can't do something because it might offend those 'minorities'.
I believe that too. I've told you that fore, but you still keep on telling me I don't.
I seem to remember you being in support of hate speech laws. That means you don't.
Where we differ is that you want Twitter to broadcast that speech, where as I support their right to not publish on your behalf.
Remember that part where a medium becomes so large that it influences public discourse?
Citation needed on that one. If I were being unkind I'd suggest you are only trying to pretend they are communists because communism gives you a whataboutism for how bad the Nazis were.
You want the original? Where they were backed by the KPD? And they'll claim that they're carrying on the tradition, or do you want to go look up their various manifestos, and tie-in's with groups like BAMN. Or you can go look at indymedia and their devout proclamation that they're acting as communist agitators. Or perhaps you'd just prefer the current german classification. Hate to break it to you, but they're right there. The standard useful idiot communists. The ones that try to crash society, and the first ones killed by the new regime when their usefulness is spent. The only difference between antifa and a nazi is the "ism."

At least they're getting warrants
At least the Trump administration is getting warrants to have a closer look at people who might have non-peaceful or non-democratic opposition to the Trump administration, which he is within his right to do. The Obama regime on the other hand, performed warrantless mass surveillence on everyone, including Trump himself.

Re:Chinese sellers VS eBay and others
My $5-20 item may come with free shipping...
Where are you from? from space? This is slashdot. At the very least, do some damn calculation. Even basic calculation on shipping cost and product manufacture tells you that it is not feasible and they aren't earning.
When they aren't earning, they aren't going to give you any *** damn service. There's no free lunch, in which someone is still paying for it.
You are already damn lucky not to get poisoned by their product.
Next time, do the damn calculation. If it's dirt cheap, you shouldn't be expecting anything. If you want some good service, pay for a higher price.

Re:obligatory cutesy name
Yep, CloudFlare is spraying supposedly TLS-encrypted data all over the internet in clear text?! What the fuck!? I almost want to laugh at CloudFlare's misfortune, except every internet user including me is probably affected by this. What the hell is the point of HTTPS at all, when so much HTTPS traffic is being purposely MITM'd for profit by CloudFlare? A very large part of the web is living under their leaky roof, meantime many in the professional networking community encourage this and help implement it. Again I ask what the fuck!? The whole company smells more like a CIA operation as time goes on.
CLOUDFLARE IS UNDERMINING THE INTERNET, not to mention proudly serving ISIS terrorist websites, malware distributors, and DDoSers/Booters. They should be null routed and de-peered! -
It's Gobi desert...
A rain shadow desert.
Any "countries where that rain would otherwise have landed" already got most of the moisture out of the air, which is why that place is a desert.Cloud seeding is part of Chinese plan to build a Green Great Wall to stop the spread of the desert and the sandstorms.
Which seems to be doing something, at least in the sense that it is apparently lowering the water table in the areas where trees are planted.Or that is at least what the opposition to the forestation program claims, suggesting instead simply fencing off the area and "nurturing the land by the land itself".
How would that create trees in areas which were "treeless in the last several thousand years", or how would temporary fencing off prevent sandstorms (even should grassland work that way) once the fences are removed and the grasslands are once again used for cattle grazing... the article doesn't mention that.
Then again, water levels have been dropping long before forestation project started. And trees are supposed to keep the water in the ground...On the other hand, Epoch Times is more than a little a Falun Gong paper.
I.e. Whatever Chinese government does is wrong. While whatever Falun Gong does might get them arrested and "reeducated" by the government. Or harvested. In any case, weather modification is being done in order to provide water for the Green Wall in the area which got desertified as the water from Shiyang River was used for irrigation upstream decades ago.

but I totally miss the evidence that would support your 'obviously'. We have seen various diseases spreading like wildfire, like heart disease, obesity, and the likes. So on what do you base the assertion that his is 'obviously impossible' for ADHD (and Autism)?
Now, maybe you are right in asserting that (part of) the rise in autism can be attributed to a development in diagnosing the disease, but when did that 'development' then exactly stop? In autism there is still clearly a rising trend, you know...
No chatting with a psychologist will be able to change this reality.

Re:there's a major problem... but how does that he
Group stigmatization and blame is appropriate and should be meted out when the group is responsible. Individuals alone should be held out as bad actors when they are not representative of the group. So let's go through some of your examples:
All Muslims are terrorists.
Individual. See numerous muslims condemning terrorist attacks. See a substantial number of the group condemning terrorism here, here, and numerous other places if you spend literally 15 seconds searching online.
I used the search term "muslim condemnation of terrorism"
All gun owners are murderers.
From what I see, gun owners very quick to condemn those who use them to murder others as being "madmen and terrorists," and advocate that having more guns would result in fewer murders. See here, here, and the commonly known meme "the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."
You can disagree with whether they are right about their approach, but I'm sure you agree that they think mass murders are a problem which need to stop.
All computer gamers are anti-social psychopaths.
I haven't heard anybody make this accusation in recent years. I'll also note there is a lot of academic research going on to study if this is true or not, and if so how it can be addressed.
All police officers are bad actors
Uhh... I did a quick search and didn't see any groups associated with the police, and have seen nobody condemning police killings. Instead I see things like arrests of protesters, and conspiracies of silence and not turning in bad apples
All I see is prosecutor after prosecutor exercising discretion to not go after police corruption or murders, and the few times they do the carefully selected jury not holding them accountable. Maybe I'm only seeing a subset of the news, in which case I'd honestly love it if you could post counter-examples I could look at.
Oh, and to add:
Their lives are often at risk.
No, it isn't. They are #14, just after taxi drivers and construction laborer. Nobody talks about how noble Roofers are and how they deserve extra special honor and privilages due to the dangerous work they do.
Police have a miserable job which puts them in contact with bad situations (like psychiatrists, lawyers, and doctors)... but they seem to be the only group which tries to put itself on a pedestal and say they deserve extra-legal privileges because of it.

Where Do These Stats Come From?
Nearly half of the software developers in the United States do not have a college degree. Many never even graduated from high school.
What? I pored over the article and the US BLS link in it to find the source of these statements. Aside from a pull quote that appears as an image in the article but isn't even in the article itself and is unattributed, could someone find me the source of this statistic?
Because I'm a software developer in the United States with a Masters of Science in Computer Science. All of my coworkers have at least a bachelor's degree in one field or another. And my undergrad very much so started with a sink-or-swim weed out course in Scheme and then another in Java. Yes, they were both easy if you already knew how to code but ... this article almost sounds like it's written by someone with no field experience. Granted that's a low sample set, I'd like to know where the other half of us are. Everyone keep in mind that a Computer Science degree is a relatively new thing and there very well may be elderly coders doing a great job without technically a degree in computer science.
The only way I can see the misconception spreading is that people who use Wix to drag and drop a WYSIWYG site (for you older readers that's like FrontPage meets Geocities) erroneously consider themselves "software developers". -
Vigilantes
A common mode of operation seems to be this:
1) A Bad Thing (TM) happens. Recent example: Leaking of private photos.
2) The culprit is identified in real life by someone doing "detective work". E.g. identifying BluntMastermind as Bryan Hamade
3) Anonymous people release a shitstorm on that person, through harassment and stalking, in real life.Step 2 opens the evidence to the public, which is good. However, in step 3, the actor is not the police/justice system, but vigilantes who take the punishing into their own hand. The rights of the accused are completely ignored, and he/she has no way of defense. A number of people who have, innocently become victims of this, have told their story.
What do you think of this development of side-stepping the justice system, and online vigilantes? Is it due to disappointment in the police and justice system? Is it human nature that comes out in large, anonymous groups (Elias Canetti comes to mind)?
Now I am not arguing against anonymity. Anonymity online certainly has a important place on the Internet. However I would like to understand why this is happening, and whether you think cybermobs automatically arise with Anonymity. -
Senate Hearings
"Following the AP report, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee announced it would hold hearings into how the NRC has handled Peck’s recommendation. Sen. Barbara Boxer, a California Democrat who chairs the panel, said in a statement she’s alarmed his report has lingered at the agency for a year. “The NRC’s failure to act constitutes an abdication of its responsibility to protect public health and safety,” she said." http://www.theepochtimes.com/n... Re:Good for them
Doesn't matter what country you pick you're going to be spied on
With the Xiaomi this is especially the case, it sends a pile of private information on you back to Beijing, China. So it's not just the generic spooks, it's also the manufacturer who's spying on you.

Re:Misleading article.
Believe it or not, there are also some instances where cryptography is not needed, such as for purely publicly accessible information that can benefit from being cached, etc.
I don't think there is any instance where cryptography would not be useful, as long as privacy is an option. Most Internet communications are point-to-point, so caching should not be done in between. From an opsec point of view, it's less risky to use encryption for confidential information if you also use encryption for everything else, too.
Even for publicly cached data, you could use cryptography for authenticity instead of confidentiality. For example, DNSSEC is about proving the authenticity of DNS information, so your name resolver doesn't get fooled by DNS hijacking. Authenticity turns out to be useful even for completely mundane stuff.

pic2Most farms keep the cow's inside for 9 months and outside on pasture for 3 months when they are dry. Inside usually consists of barns with 14' or so open sides or more in warmer climates (ie, in California it is basically just a roof). Cows are not tied up and are free to roam around there pen or pasture depending.

Re:Can you handle the truth?
What both you and the OP are missing is that there is a balance between costs and benefits. He is looking only at the costs of those protections, you are looking only at the benefits. I'll disagree with the OP and say that many of those protections are necessary and ultimately beneficial, but realizing that they have very real costs. On the other hand a great many of those protections are NOT worth the cost. If you assert that they are worth the costs you have no standing to complain when the bill comes due in the form of a slower economy and persistent high unemployment.
On thing to remember when evaluating those costs. It's not usually the big bad corporations, the villains of the morality play that usually bear those costs. They have the resources to comply with the regulations and in many cases welcome them as a barrier to entry protecting them from competition. The law preventing BigFoodCo, Inc. from poisoning children (like they really want) is at worst a minor inconvenience to BigFoodCo. They do what's required, file the paperwork, raise the price of milk by a few pennies and turn to some other scheme to fulfill their goal of poisoning children. The people who bear the cost are potential entrepreneurs who look at the costs and decide it's not worth it. Or those that go for it but end up bankrupt because the costs of compliance were too high. Or, those who don't comply and get caught like organic coops and Amish farmers raided by the police and FDA for selling raw milk to the tree hugging hippies who want it. Note that in the California case selling raw milk is legal, but they didn't have all the proper paperwork filed.
