google.cn censorship doesn't seem to be working
"In order to operate from China, we have removed some content from the search results available on Google.cn, in response to local law, regulation or policy," the internet company said in a statement issued yesterday.
That's quite interesting. I just ran a search for "tibet" on google.cn. I can't read the first two results, but the third and fourth results, at first glance, look very pro-Tibet-independence.
Perhaps Google hasn't launched this new site yet, or perhaps it's returning different results due to my IP address not being in China. Can anyone confirm?

Re:Simple solution
And there was never a war in Tibet, we went there to reinstate our rightful authority there given the fact that Tibet was a province of China under the Empire, and since the PRC is a successor state i.e. is in a chain of replacement governemnts of the Empire, the PRC is legally in control of Tibet. So what you're saying is basically the equivalent of saying that China can't send troops to its own territory.
Try telling that to my mother, uncle, and aunt who fled from Tibet through the Himalayas because a neighbouring country decided to assert their "rightful authority". My grandfather died in China-Occupied Tibet and my grandmother died shortly after getting out.
Rape, slaughter, famine, and cultural-cleansing are some of the many atrocities Tibetans were subjected to because China decided to assert their "rightful authority". Tibet was an independant country. Sadly, it no longer is. I don't claim Tibet is a country, but strongly incist that it was.
I suggest YOU look up some facts before posting pro-China "crap". Let's start with http://www.tibet.org/why/ and http://www.tibet.com/WhitePaper/
How can you be so misinformed? You should be ashamed of what China did from a humanitarian point of view, regardless of whatever political bias and motivations you may have.

Hong Kong: Stooge for BeijingAccording to 1997 poll conducted by CNN/Time, more than 60% of the Hong Kongers cheered the unification of Hong Kong and mainland China. Most Chinese support Chinese nationalism over human rights or democracy. Most high schools in Hong Kong voluntarily teach that Tibet should be integrated into "One China".
In this kind of sick, stifling intellectual environment, the brightest minds would not be able to conduct the best research and development. The brightest minds need a free, open-minded environment that does not cater to Chinese nationalism.
Where would such an open-minded environment be? USA, Canada, Germany, Sweden, etc.

China: Deliberately Rigged Voting MachinesWe easily can imagine a scenario where Beijing uses deliberately rigged voting machines to hold an election in responce to pressure from Tokyo and Washington to become democratic. Look how voting machines can be unreliable. We could imagine some Chinese thugs deliberately making them unreliable -- or "reliably" voting for the nationalistic Maoist candidate in each election.
The endless schemes that evil can conjure are amazing.

China and Environment: Not Funny at AllI bet you $1000 that the person who proposed "national parks" on Mars is not Chinese. Most Chinese simply do not care about the environment, worker's rights, human rights, etc.
The Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition (SVTC) has been doing annual studies of major computer companies and evaluating how well they support the environment. All the Korean and Chinese companies (including companies based in Taiwan province) had a failing grade in the studies.

China: Piracy of Patents
Well, fortunately, Microsoft is a company with deep pockets. At least, it will have the funds to fight piracy of its patent in China. Chinese companies are notorious for outright stealing a patent and then itself applying for the patent to the Chinese ministry of technology. The behavior is utterly disgusting, but there is little that American companies can do to stop it.
-
Chinese VIA: Not Funny at AllThe Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition (SVTC) has been doing an annual survey of how environmentally friendly Chinese companies (including Taiwanese ones), Korean companies, Japanese companies, and American companies are. The Koreans and the Chinese failed to meet even the bare minimum passing grade on the survey.
VIA may have produced a lead-free motherboard, but VIA abuses its workers and integrates lead into other products.
Ballmer should wake up and license his new PC to American and Japanese companies, particularly those on the SVTC's list of recommended companies.

History? We live in 2004, not 1534.Typical Chinese bigots set their watches to December 5, 1534 and then start comparing China to the rest of the world.
We do not live back then. We live in November 27, 2004.
In 2004, the Chinese are a brutal, nationalistic people. They torture and kill scores of Tibetans each year.
When the East Timorese were butchered by the Indonesian thugs, the Chinese (including the bigots in Taiwan) did nothing. Only the Westerners, i.e. Australians, sent troops to East Timor and stopped the bloodshed without approval by the United Nations. The Chinese did take the time to condemn Australia and claimed that the Australians were violating national sovereignty.
What is clear is that the Chinese act and think in a way that is extremely different from the way in which Westerners act and think, in 2004.

India: High Rate of Abortions Killing Female FetusDemocracy is only 1 aspect of Westernization. Singapore is a democracy, but it is not a Western nation. Ditto for India and Taiwan.
In the case of India, a large percentage of Indian families undergo targetted abortions that kill female fetuses. The sex ratio at birth (SRB) of males to females is now 1.20. The normal SRB is 1.05.
Western nations like the USA and Japan have a normal ratio.
By the way, the parent article is deceptive. The bigotted writer claims that India has all the good features of the West. If this claim were true, then the SRB would be normal. Wife burning would be nonexistent. Further, the quality of life in India would be as high as the quality in the USA, Australia, and Japan.
1955 Japan had a higher quality of life than 2004 India. You be the judge.
As the grandparent article noted, we should terminate all trade with India, Mexico, and China until they Westernize. Westernization includes the adoption of Western values.
Remember East Timor? Remember the butchery by Indonesian thugs in 1999? Indian troops and Chinese troops did not lift a finger to help the East Timorese women and children. Only the Australians (a premier Western people) sent their military to East Timor to stop the bloodshed -- without approval from the United Nations (which is dominated by 3rd world bigots like the Indians).

China: Keep this Technology SecretIf H3 proves to be a viable source of endless energy, then we must keep this technology secret. Otherwise, the Chinese would use it to fuel their ultimate ambition: a space-based particle-beam weapon. The principal impediment to deploying such a weapon is that it requires an enormous about of energy.
I remind the readers that the Chinese space program is located entirely within the Chinese Department of War. The space program is designed to further the Chinese military machine.
By contrast, NASA is an entirely civilian effort.

Sun = 3rd World BazaarThe point here is that Sun is a 3rd world bazaar. The majority of its workforce is former or current H-1Bs from India, Taiwan province, and the rest of China [tibet.org].
When Sun management was talking about bazaar, the management was being truthful. OSI and Sun are simply talking about two different kinds of bazaars. Sun is referring to its disinclination to hire American employees. OSI is referring to the technical setup of it software.

Tibet: Counterpoint to Parent ArticleEven today, the Chinese routinely rape and kill Tibetan women and children. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have repeatedly identified Chinese brutality and condemned it.
The failure of Chinese society is the failure of its culture. Look at Taiwan and Singapore, both being Chinese states. In the latter, the Chinese practice eugenics and have repeatedly banned or censored journals like "The Economist". In the former, the Chinese actually support all the geopolitical objectives of Beijing, including the integration of Tibet into "One China".
-
Chinese Slave LaborThe problem is that American politicians want to integrate the Chinese economy and our economy. In this combined economy, whenever Beijing intervenes in the Chinese economy, that intervention also affects the American economy. Yet, American politicians continue lying, "The USA has a free market because Washington does not intervene."
What we should do is to terminate all trade (including goods and services -- which includes labor) with mainland China. Ditto for India and Mexico. Until the Chinese, the Indians, and the Mexicans commit to free trade and Westernization, we do not trade with them.
Further, we deport all the H-1B workers.
-
The Workers are in for a Big SurpriseUnlike the USA and the rest of the West, Indian labor laws generally do not protect the rights of workers. Further, the quality of life in India is atrocious. Imagine what life was like in 1950 Japan. 2004 India is worse than 1950 Japan.
That some starry eyed Westerners have gone to India to work is not a trend. They are there due to the novelty of the situation. It hits us all at times.
Once the novelty wears off, they will be on the first plane back to the West. The place that is worse than India is China.

Not so funny ...3 weeks after the release of this mod chip, Chinese factories will churn out millions of copies of the mod chip. I hope that the inventor of the mod chip has, at least, patented it at the US Patent Trade Office. The inventor will have no hope of patenting the chip in China; Beijing simply does not respect inventions developed by non-Chinese.
The Chinese have outright pirated numerous designs of products: golf clubs, batteries, cars, drugs, etc.

Something Not Funny: Use AOL CDs to Condemn ChinaToday, China has become more militant and is even militarizing space. Note that the Chinese space program is located entirely within the Chinese Department of War.
If you protest the Chinese occupation of Tibet, the Chinese black market for organs (which are forcibly cut from unwilling patients), etc., then just send your AOL CD to the Chinese ambassador to the USA, Japan, Canada, or any other country in which you live. Simply mailing the CD's does not violate the law, and you are not hurting anyone.
Nonetheless, when a million CDs appear on the ambassador's doorstep, they serve as a useful reminder, to the Chinese, that wherever they go in your nation, millions of your fellow citizens condemn what the Chinese are doing. If you are in the USA, then visit the PushBack Website to get a list of Chinese addresses.
Thank you from the millions of Tibetans and others whom the Chinese have butchered.

China and SpywareThe author of the article describing how much spyware can be installed in a single visit to a web site should keep this information to himself. The Chinese are already a major source of viruses, spyware, and spamware . The Chinese will simply use this information to devise clever ways to install even more spyware and to use that spyware to steal information from your computer. This spyware is a way for Beijing to monitor the computer activies of Americans.
Be afraid.

China: Knockoffs and Ripoffs of MacintoshThe victory euphoria in Cupertino, California will be shortlived. Once the Macintosh makes any significant comeback, the Chinese will quickly make illegal copies of the Macintosh and MacOS.
The Chinese currently steal what they do not want to buy. China has a huge open market, not black market, for pirated software and hardware. The stuff is not even in the black market but is in the open market, for most Chinese support the idea of ripping people off. The police even condone the behavior.

Good for Stopping Chinese Forgery of USA MoneyThis technology will prove to be useful for stopping the forgery of American money, particularly the $20 bill. The Chinese are notorious for generating millions of dollars of copies of American $20 bills and $100 bills . The forgeries are quite good and are devastating to the American economy.
Why are forgeries devastating? They bloat the money supply and cheapen the funds that Americans have saved in their 401Ks.
This new technology for recognizing fake paintings will put an end to Chinese forgery. Awesome.

Something Not So FunnyThe reality is that the Chinese killed VHS. The Chinese factories simply churn out so many DVD players that they are no more expensive than a VHS player.
There are other examples of how the Chinese have altered the landscape of history.
Linux is having a tough time in gaining traction in China because piracy is so severe that both Solaris and Windows XP are essentially free. How can Linux compete against them?

Potential Torture Devices -- ChinaThese new devices for promoting sensory input to the brain have potentially dangerous applications as means of torture. Most of you probably already know that the Chinese brutally torture Tibetans: there have been occasions when the Chinese insert electric cattle prods into the vaginas of the Tibetan women.
If the Chinese knew how these new sensory devices work, the Chinese would just modify them to deliver excruciating pain to the brain. I hope that we keep these technologies secret, for the risk of abusing them is quite high.
-
Defeating Tracking Is Dual-Use TechnologyIf we can defeat the tracking, then we will stumble upon an important dual-use technology. The Chinese are morally bankrupt and have tortured thousands of Tibetans. These Chinese use the latest technology to track Tibetans and other "troublemakers".
We could apply this dual-use technology to prevent the Chinese government from tracking "troublemakers". If anyone is successful in defeating tracking in the color printer, please keep the technology to yourself so that the Chinese do not learn how it works. Please do share the technology with the American government, the Japanese government, the Tibetan movement, etc.

Solaris, Linux, and ChinaOpen-source Solaris will not kill Linux, for Linux has the backing of all major computer companies excluding Sun Microsystems (SUNW). Here, "open-source" means "distributed under GPL". Any Solaris technology that might be useful will simply migrate into the next release of Linux.
The result is that Linux will kill Solaris, deader than a doorknob.
The one country where Linux cannot defeat a proprietary operating system (OS) is China. In China, the Chinese simply steal what they do not want to buy. Windows XP is essentialy "free" just like Linux. Solaris is also "free".

Good Idea but Caution is Needed -- ChinaThat HP will sell compute power like a commodity is good news. It is a way for established computer giants to generate a steady revenue stream that does not depend on annual launches of new hardware. Whether hardware is new is irrelevant; what counts to the customer is whether the hardware has the computational power to meet her needs.
Having made that obvious statement, let us address the issue of caution. We must be careful to restrict which customers can buy compute power from HP. For example, we should prohibit any Chinese national or any Chinese company (including those in Taiwan) from buying compute power from HP. The Chinese would surely leverage American computer power to refine Chinese weapons systems.
The Chinese are morally bankrupt and have massacred scores of Tibetan women and children -- annually. Would your conscience forgive you if, someday, Chinese weapons developed with HP compute power were used to killed American soldiers on the battlefield?

Keep These Pictures Secret! Why? CHINA!Showing prototypes of a space-based battlestation would only help the Chinese. The Chinese brutally torture and kill Tibetan women and children. Would we want the Chinese to advance their ultimate plans to weaponize space?
Please, people. Tell the Russians to keep these pictures secret. If they want to brag, then just show them to the American politicians and the European politicians.
I fear for the safety of the Western world.

Much Better Game: Winning the War Against ChinaA better game would be the following. Take advantage of the large mainland Chinese community in Canada. Many of the folks in that community are the children of officials in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Befriend these privileged children and determine their home addresses in mainland China.
Then, send some Western vigilantes to mainland China to kill the CCP officials. Killing Hu Jintao, the leader of China, garners 1000 bonus points.

Safeguarding Critical Technology from Chinese EyesThis electric car developed by Mr. Shimizu is truly amazing, for it can go for 200 miles on only a 1-hour charge. Note that a typical sub-compact car goes for about 300 miles on a single tank of gas.
What is important to note is that we must safeguard this outstanding technology from the Chinese. China is morally bankrupt, and the Chinese would use this technology to enhance their armored transport in the People's Liberation Army.
China and the West (i.e. Japan and the USA) are really very different societies. Tibet, anyone?

Worst Science Job: Chinese "Doctor"I imagine that the absolute worst science job in the world is being a Chinese "doctor". These "doctors" slice organs out of unwilling patients and sell the organs on the black market, usually to Taiwanese customers. Further, on occasion, the Chinese doctors skin the patients alive and dump their still breathing carcasses into a dump truck.
The feeling of "worst" applies to any Westerner who would be compelled to work at such a job. On the other hand, the Chinese who is culling the organs most likely relishes his job and takes a ghastly delight in using Nazi-style techniques to extract the organs.
China and the USA are really very different societies. Tibet, anyone?

Keep the Best Tools Non-Open SourceKeeping some of the best tools in non-open source mode would be best; otherwise, the Chinese will have access to the source code.
Most people can agree that open source fosters the development of software, but sometimes in the interest of the West, we should keep the best tools secret. They can be sold as binaries, but their source code should remain secret. Further, the technology behind the tools should be secret -- safely guarded at American companies which do not employ Chinese nationals.
Ask yourself, "How would I feel if my tools were exploited by the Chinese to improve their weapons systems or their torture techniques against Tibetans and others?"

Chinese Spyware and AdwareI have Internet Explorer (IE), but I experienced the same problems that the grandparent writer experienced. After some investigation, I discovered that a visit to a "harmless" Chinese site resulted in the installation of an adware/spyware virus. I reinstalled IE, and everything was okay afterwards.
These days the spam and other WWW nuisances from China are becoming more severe. I know, for a fact, that some of the Chinese spyware transmits personal data (like passwords) directly to proxy sites run by Chinese affiliates of the People's Liberation Army of mainland China.

INSIDE INFO: Nvidia will not succeed.I have a friend who actually works at Nvidia. Like many companies headed by a Chinese, software development is a hodge podge. There is no documentation. The simulator for each new chip often crashes, leaving a "core dump".
Does this story sound familiar? It should. It is the same story that plagued Sun Microsystems before it crashed in flames started by the UltraSPARC III.
