Any experience with Magicolor?
Anyone have any experience with Minolta Magicolor printers? They do pretty well as far as price goes but I've never owned one and have been really tempted a couple times... The 2200 has a $200 rebate right now too.
Tigerdirect seems to have pretty good prices on those printers. Look here. -
Re:An attractive proposal...
Well, the same reason as to why we don't have room-temp (or only requiring passive cooling) 500mhz processors for $25, silent single platter 10gb HDs for $25, 256mb 266mhz DDR RAM for $25.
600MHz passive-cooled processor for $15
Silent single-platter 20gb HD for $39 (can't hit the magic $25 price point, but it is 20gb)
256mb 266MHz DDR RAM for $22
It CAN be done for the prices you quote; but your point still is valid. The flashy stuff sells and gets the PR. -
LCD's are cheap
I got an email from TigerDirect today.
LCD specials
14" for $159
15" for $219
17" for $319
Do we see 17" LCD's for $249 this Holiday season?
LCD's are great for multiple monitor set ups, your desk doesn't collapse like with CRTs. Then again, your colors don't quite match up either... -
Re:USB
I use the IOGear MiniView 4-port USB-KVM switch.. Have had it for a couple of years now... I use it with my Mac, Sun Blade, Windows XP laptop, and Linux machine. The Mouse wheel works fine on all of these. It's around $130 at Fry's or online and includes cables (so it's not too expensive)
Here's a URL on tigerdirect for it. Not a recommendation on where to buy, but they seem nice. (and no, I dont' work for them!)

Re:Apple is claiming Fastest SPEC
though come to think of it, $3000 is pretty sweet. i can't imagine where you'd find a dual Xeon for $3000.
TigerDirect has dual 2.4ghz Xeons with HT for $1999, 1 gig ram and dual 80 HD's Very nice workstation, comes with both 2K and XP licenses, so you can pick the one you need.
Next year, when the 3ghz PPC's come out, we should see the 2ghz drop around 2K, and thats when I'll upgrade my mac. -
Tiger Direct: 15 GB, $229.00
I don't know how the 3 GB thing got started, the base system is 10 GB, and they have some nice upgrades at 229.00. One has DDR ram. 10 and 15 GB HDD's. Go look for yourself. Now, These systems can run KDE and Gimp all at once, no problem. I do it all the time using Mandrake 8, 256 MB SDRAM, and an AMD K6-2 running at 390 MHZ. All Day, till I drop, and I cannot see why Lindows can't do that too (Debian). If I had a spare 229.00, which I don't, I'd get this machine, put my HDD's in it (save time) and go to it! Save on Shipping? Where is this place anyway. Let's just drive over there and suprise them some Saturday morning, $$ in hand.
-
Re:a 3 gig drive !
I don't think these computers come with 3 GB HDDs. I think it's 10 GB. Go to Tiger Direct, and put "Lindows Computer" in the search box. The $199.99 one has a 10 GB HDD, 128 MB of RAM (probably easily upgraded for very little $$).
My problem is, do you get the Lindows OS CD's? If so, then you can re-setup the drive, with Windows 98 at the bottom, and then the (Debian) Lindows OS on top of that. One could then add a Slave HDD, with Mandrake Linux, if you already have one in your "box-o-hhd's", which I do. I have such a setup that I am using now, and use System Commander to pick which OS to use. (Also have DOS/Arachne and Redhat) The Lindows OS probably has drivers for everything, however, and would get used because of that. -
write your own review. specs below!
Only the novapcs mentions it is using a sis 730 mobo,
the wallmart pc uses probably a Integrated TRIDENT BLADE 2D/3D graphics video.
the wintermart probably uses a Integrated S3 Savage 4 video up to 32 mb ram.
Now tell me why cannot play quake 3 on either of these? The reviewer should have tried it! OK QII with 300 fps in 1600x1200FSAA is not possible but 25 FPS in 640x480 should work. (Is there a port for QIII?)

Re:Why
TigerDirect sells XP Home Edition for $199. The OEM version is only $89, but when you can save $40 you want to save $40.

Re:CEO goes home?
Imagine a Zaurus for the price of a lowend Palm OS machine, no don't imagine purchase it in a couple of years
Admittadly I can't spell ;), nor do I know the cost of a lower end palm. That aside, I just bought a Zaurus (SL-5500) for $200. It is recertified, but in very good shape. plus I paid $23 for an extra year's warranty. It's been trating me great. Is that a competitive price? -
Longer Warranty != More Reliable
Warranty on seagate ide drive == 1 year
warranty on seagate scsi drive == 5 years.
Looks to me like seagate believes they're better drives.
Please tell me that you don't actually intend to pass that off as a logical conclusion.
Seagate 80GB IDE drive: $99.99
Seagate 73.4GB SCSI drive: $459.99
How the hell is Seagate supposed to provide a five year warranty on a drive that's being sold to consumers for $100? It's pretty easy to see that there is enough profit margin to cover a 5 year warranty for a $460 73GB SCSI drive.
Samsung still has 3 year warranties on their ide drives. Only one I'l buy from now.
Good for you. You can get a slower, less reliable drive with a longer warranty (I have experience on a project that used Samsung drives in over 3,000 systems). And when that $99 drive dies, you can stop working on your computer, send it back, wait for a replacement, put that in, install the OS and try to reconstruct your data. Good luck.
Hyundai and Kia cars have 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warrantees. I guess you think that Hyundai and Kia cars are the most reliable in the world. -
Re:Ogg Vorbis Support
I ripped my whole collection to Ogg/Vorbis and when I want to be portable I use a Casio BE300 (about $130 at OfficeMax, last I noticed), expod UI replacement, a 256Mb CF card from tigerdirect.com ($30 = $60 w/$30 rebate) and winampaq.

PC CD Tower... Sort of.
I came across these recently. I had never seent hem before, they're interesting.
Basically they're USB CD towers. They do not actually play the CD's, but rather just catalog them, and spit them out at you when you request a disc. They also have some features that allow you to loan discs to friends and they'll track their location and such.
I like it.
This one does 75 CD's http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTool s/item-details.asp?sku=K26-2800%20P
This one does 100 CD's http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTool s/item-details.asp?sku=B600-2000%20P
The cool thing about the second one is you can daisy chain it and store up to 127,000 CD's or so.
Also there's tigerdirect.ca for the Canucks out there. :) -

Re:Without the PC, Microsoft is helpless
Symbian is the standard and Linux is coming, leaves only PDAs, where Microsoft is still holding out
I just ordered a Sharp Zaurus from TigerDirect.com. I've been reading up on it a lot, and it seems to have a pretty damn big following. People are porting TONS of the COOLEST Java and Linux apps to it, so it's got a major abuncance of software out there. The OS itself is GPL'd. Does anyone know if it's a specific distro? -
Emptor Caveat
Let the buyer beware...
I bought most of my home networking equipment from TigerDirect. They're wonderful, they ship fast and the items arrived in wonderful condition. However, the Belkin products which I ordered had a rebate. I sent in the rebate, 2 months later I recieved an email saying I had not enclosed the UPC. IT WAS STAPLED TO THE REBATE FORM. I attempted to explain this to the support rep, but she wouldn't have it. Obviously, stupid me forgot to photocopy the UPCs. I attempted to ask TigerDirect to clear it up, no such luck.
Needless to say, I don't buy Belkin products from TigerDirect anymore. My girlfriend's home network, which I implemented, is all D-Link now. -
I've actually been looking at another option
Instead of spending money on an uber-silent case and mobo (allthough a mini-itx would do the job), I'm considering this.
I figure I can hook this bad boy up to my powerhouse machine and just send it all wireless.
The only thing I'm concerned about is sound quality. I've already got a dvd player so I don't need that functionality. I just want a way to play my divx files and ogg/mp3s on the main system.
I've done some testing, converting divx to vcd but I always end up with unsynched sound. I also figure that keeping things in divx would be much better than spending the time converting them to vcd and having to change disks halfway through.

Maybe its not as good of an item as it seems...From The Site:
The Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 is the first Personal Digital Ass...

Alternative etailer
FYI, You can get the Zaurus over at TigerDirect for $199. It is recertified and Tiger has kind of a dubious image although I have bought from them a few times with no problem.

But which one is "coolest"?
you can't buy single Via processors anyway
I think you're mistaken
From that page:
The 667MHz VIA Cyrix III is the coolest processor on the market
and
The 600MHz VIA C3 is the coolest processor on the market
I'm confused. -

$29 5.1 Sound
$99 Clear pc case
$50 Cordless keyboard with built in mouse
$99 120 Gig hard drive
$219 DVD Burner

$25 Zalman cpu cooler

Coolness factor..priceless.
Plus, on the bright side after your wife/lover/puppy figures out how much this all cost you can remind them that its totally upgradable! Plus you can install next years features an 1/3 the cost (intead of throwing it away)! -
Re:As I've said before...
- I've been waiting for YEARS to see the pixels get so small you cannot see them.
No you haven't. Trust me. Do you realize how many f*cking idiotic "graphic developers" use 1 or 2 pixel borders? Or specify things in terms of pixels rather than relative sizes?
It
would not
be pretty.
You can find cheapo 14 inch monitors that propose to go up to insanely high resolutions. Get one of those. They are fuzzy and icky. Yuck.
Don't look forward to HDTV for your solution either, the resolution on HDTV sucks in comparison to computer screens. 1040i, heh. Though I do admit that modern de interlacing techniques are worlds better than what we had before, still, 1040i is a craptacular resolution. And even the cheapest consumer computer LCD these days does better then 720p.
(and what IS up with LCD TVs costing so much for just small models? I can get a 15inch computer LCD, a bare bones with video out shuttle systel and some essentials for less than the price of a single new LCD TV set
TV tuner cards for computers range from $20-$60USD. I picked mine up at a computer swap meet for 20, it is a generic BT chipset and worked just fine until I accidently ended up using my RF cable as ground and a power surge hit. ^_^ (as it is the S-Video and composite in lines still work, yah!) -
Re:Gateway AnyKey
I have one of these and they *rock*. The problem with mine now is it's age, let's see, it came with a P5-90, so that's what, five-six years old? It's filthy, some of the QWERTY keys are starting to go and the space bar is already somewhat loose in its mounting. Naturally, I've been looking for a replacement and the best I've come up with so far is some of the more advanced Cherry keyboards and PI Engineering's rather cool looking PS/2 Stick Keys. Can anyone add to the list?

PCI GeForce 4 MX available at TigerDirect
I noticed that you were limited to GeForce2 MX cards for your second two video cards because you need PCI-- there are GeForce4 MX PCI cards available. Here is a quick link to one of them-- I'm sure there are other variations available. $50 after rebate if you get it by the end of March.

Re:Can they compete at that price? When i first saw your link i was in awe... Too good to be true. But as the old saying goes, it probably is.
Notice at the bottom of that page they mention that you have to mail them for the manufacturer warranty. Hmmm... what could they be hiding...
Could it be this 1 month parts; 1 month labor This is also a similar drive, same spec, just 9.1GB instead of 36GB and at the too good to be true price.
-
Can they compete at that price?
Estimated Price: $160 (36 GB)
Manufacturer Specifications
Beta unit provided by Hypermicro.com
Remember, mention StorageReview in your HyperMicro.com order and receive free UPS ground shipping!
Tiger Direct has 36GB Ultra160 SCSI's for only $99. Anyone know if these are some type of rejects? Google did not reveal any obvious issues with this model. -
Network Block Device
Sounds like it nbd may be your ticket if you are using Linux. nbd is designed to take a block device, like a hard drive and make it available over a network on a different host. It will also do RAID 0,1,5. Perhaps it will work with a ramdisk. I can't swear that this will work but is sure might, since after all, a ramdisk is implemented as a block device.
RAM is cheap. If you are unconcerned about high electricity costs and need a large *F*A*S*T* device for storage, stripping a number of ramdisks could be the thing to do. PC133 1GB DIMMs are currently about US$200 and are on their way down. Sure, it's expensive compared to RAID 5, but I'm sure it's a lot faster. Just make sure you write out anything you need prior to downing the whole array.

Re:An Xbox because:
Ooh... I know! You could use one of those tiny pc cases like this Shuttle one...
Of course, the built-in graphics and sound suck (for gaming, okey doke for everything else) so you'd have to get ye a Radeon 9700 (Almost twice the price of an XBOX and with it's own loud cooling fan and extra power attachment to the power supply, but hey, it has video out so you can plug it into your HD-TV) and a Soundblaster Audigy II (only half the price of an XBOX)... then a DVD-Drive... a P-4 (again, about twice the price of an XBOX and boy that poor little power supply! How's it gonna handle all the juice this hungry set of components guzzles), a lot of RAM, USB Controllers (game controllers, it actually includes USB ports)... when all's said and done, for about $1500 - $2000 (TV announcer voice) You could build your own smokingly fast gaming PC about the size of an XBOX, lots louder, lots warmer (you can have your own space heater!)... and that's not even including modding the case so it at least *looks* cooler!
Ok, so the XBOX is mondo cheaper, in fact, cheaper than the parts it's made of (damn, that's a cheap box, not like what you'll find on the street!). My question is: Why is it that on a message board that so THOROUGLY hates MS (even more than MS the degenerative muscular disease) ANY mod to the XBOX is such a huge deal! Next up, the MS XBOX super toaster mod... install a P4, sans heat sink and accompanying refrigerator. Turn on modded XBOX and put toast on the melting plastic... replace melted plastic case with Iron (ooh... a case with substance, not like those *wimpy* aluminum cases, this puppy weighs a ton and can really keep its heat ((homer simpson voice) stupid efficient, lightweight aluminum!)) to create a lovely skillet!

Samsung 50" HDTV w/ no risk of burn-in......
I'll be the first to admit my utter ignorance when it comes to the wonderful world of home electronics, but I know how to spew things verbatim.
:) The Samsung 50" DLP Widescreen HDTV-capable projection TV has zero problems with burn-in or convergence, since it doesn't have any CRT guns in it. My buddy just bought it for his apartment, and not only is the picture super-crisp and viewable at fairly wide angles without fading out, like some other big-ass TVs.
Oh, and did I mention it's only 17.5" deep and weighs all of 88lbs? That's just a smidgen heavier than my 21" NEC AccuSync 120 at work, and almost 3" shallower! -
Re:just wondering
FYI, i didn't say only twice as many, I said at least twice as many. Maybe before you flame someone you should make sure to thoroughly read their post. Also, how do you expect statistics on pirated versions of Windows? The Walmart computers aren't EXTREMELY cheap, compared to what you can get on TigerDirect.

Re:There's no such thing as a "DVD+RW" formatI tend to go by the cost of the media more than anything else.
For example, 1 DVD-RAM disc costs more than several DVD-R discs. If you are really concerned about data, you could burn 2 DVD-Rs for the cost of 1 DVD-RAM. (I always double-burn everything -- I've burned some 1900 cds, each twice.) Or even 3. Having a spare means when you scratch your precious dvd and lose 100M of data, that you can simply go back to your archive copy and re-copy a 2nd copy of it. Yay.
Also, the Panasonic LF-321U is one of the cheapest drives out there that does what it does. There is a good deal at TigerDirect.com -- $199. You can add a 2nd year to the warrantee for $22 more. Grand total of $235 with shipping. I don't know how long this deal is going to exist, but I have one on order as my first DVD-Writer and am really looking forward to it. (It's a christmas present from my parents)

$200 Toshiba E310 32MB
So I hate to sound like an advertising piece, but I just got one of these from TigerDirect.com 32MB RAM, SD card slot, 206Mhz processor, and thin as my Palm m505. Plus a color 320x240 screen. It doesn't run Linux, but I don't see why I'd buy this Indian vaporware instead.

Get tigerdirect to include Linux hardware info
Hey everybody, let's start the ball rolling. TigerDirect sends me tons of specials in my mailbox every month, and I get their catalogs all the time. One thing that annoys me is that I can't see if any of the printers, scanners, printer servers or other hardware works with Linux. They carefully spell out in their catalog each operating system and version, 95, 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, Mac, etc. but no mention of Linux. Everyone reading this, go to TigerDirect's online contact form (they hide their email address) and ask them to include info on all their hardware on whether it also works with Linux, yes, no, unknown. This will help us Linux users, and will put pressure on other companies to do the same.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/sectors/Help/form.asp -
Yes, but without AMD...
There wouldn't be a need for cool cases like this. I guess there's still the point of overclocking, but in reality, why wouldn't you overclock? Pay less, get more. It's the perfect solution for all us cheapskates.
-
Re:Cool... (pun intended)
They already make standard IDE cables like this one that are round instead of flat ribbons. Of course, the connectors still have to be 20 pins wide, so it's not perfect, but it is much better than the standard cable for airflow and space.

Re:my only purchase-killer is lack of hard driveDepends on how much data you want to carry around. The Zaurus has a CF slot *and* an SD slot. Stick in a 1Gig micro drive and one of the newer 512M SD cards and you can have 1.5Gig of data to cart around.
I am running mine with a 64M MMC card (partitioned with a 32M swap) and a 256M CF card. Haven't run out of room yet.

ISB Pro800 Turbo
Info
CHECK THIS OUT, 2 DSL\Cable lines into 1 BOX !
The ISB Pro800turbo is Nexland's flagship. It is the only box of its kind to feature dual modem ports faster browsing speeds by load balancing two broadband accounts. Mix, Cable, DSL, SDSL and/or T1 connections. Auto-Failover between ports.
The 8-port switch supports up to 253 computers making it easy to set up a small network in a snap. The Pro800turbo also contains Nexland's proprietary technology which allows unlimited IPsec tunnels over NAT.
Looks like it'd be alright...Haven't personally used it, but for $379 it can't be all that bad. -

Tigerdirect has fast shipping, great customer service, low prices (and amazing specials), and a wide selection. IMHO you can't go wrong with them.

Thompson Computer Warehouse
TCWO is where I purchased my parts last time I did an upgrade (about 3 months ago). They had really good prices and great web/phone support. I had a problem with my order and emailed them (I put only 256MB RAM instead of 512MB) and they got right back to me and fixed it.
I had a problem with Tiger Direct about a year ago. While their prices are allright their service is terrible. Phone support is nonexistant unless you want to be on hold and then told to call back later when Mr. X is in and their products seem to be a bit diffrent than what they give. Heck, one time they didn't even send me the product!!! -
Two Sites
Two sites that I look at often are TigerDirect.com and PriceWatch.com. They both have great deals, and many products available.

ElectroVaya Powerpad may help
I haven't used one in real life, but the Electrovaya PowerPad 160 may be what your looking for. It's a slim pad that goes underneath your laptop and offers up to 16hours run time. It's not a laptop battery replacement, it's an addon. Looks like you can charge both the laptop and the powerpad at the same time in under 6 hours. A product brief (fun PDA so I havent read it) is here.
But at 500$ for it, it may be out of your budget. -
