Re:No, says an amazon.com review (not mine)
2) C++ Algorithms 3rd Edition by Robert Sedgewick also Addison Wesley books. Why? You seriouly have to know your date structure skills, linked lists, stacks, trees, queues and its accompanying algoritms, such as: searching and sorting, merging and merge sorting. Stroustrups books assumes you know how these all come together, if you do not believe this, then look at his stark and algorithmically complex data structure examples, once this is read everything will be a piece of cake, believe this, do not fool yourself.
While I agree that a good book (or three) on algorithms is necessary, this book does not qualify, at least IMO. I would recommend Introduction to Algorithms by Cormen, Leiserson, Rivest and Stein as one of many superior alternatives. It has a few problems as well (mostly excessive formality) but at least it has the information you need. Of course the old standby in this genre is to get all three volumes of Knuth, plus the "fasicles" of volume four that are coming out (supplemented as needed in areas he hasn't covered yet). If you can find a copy of Algorithms + Data Structures = Programs by Niklaus Wirth, it's a very good book as well (though I'm pretty sure it's been out of print for quite a while -- but getting your favorite used book store to search for ISBN 0-12-022418-9 may be worthwhile). As you might expect, this uses Pascal for its examples, but for this kind of book, the specific language used doesn't matter all that much.
If you want more detail about these books (such as why Sedgewick's is utterly worthless) see: http://tinyurl.com/d68kl.
Last Word: Stroustrups book is definite worth in purchase and you cannot consider yourself a C++ software engineer, or C++ Software/Systems architect without having this book in your library, but patience and read books 1,2, and three first in that order.
Hmm...oddly enough, I don't have this book, and manage to get by fairly well -- IMO, if you want a book on software engineering, something by Grady Booch or Bertrand Meyer would be a better bet. Somewhere in here there should also be a mention of Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs -- in fact, it might be the most important and useful of all -- even though it uses Scheme rather than C++.

Oh, and never mind the fact that you can sell your broken iPod on eBay for more than that 10%. -

SecurIDs for 2FA; Phone of 5 Senses
I wonder what proportion of
/. readers are carrying SecurIDs or some other OTP token for two-factor authentication (2FA) at work? At least in Japan, NTT DoCoMo i-appi phones have had SecurID token-emulation software available for a couple of years. (This is the same one-time password (OTP) app that RSA offers in the US and elsewhere for PDAs, Blackberries, and various Ericsson and Nokia mobile phones.) 2FA, like everything else, comes packaged in incrimentally stronger or weaker form-factors. "Soft-tokens" are at one end of the 2FA spectrum, since they rely upon the token-holder for physical and virtual security, while sealed tamper-resistant hardware tokens are at the other. It seems entirely possible to more securely engineer the 2FA code into the phone's internal (GSM?) chip, merging the convenience of phone-based 2FA with the security of tamper-resistant hardware. (I noticed that the guys at the DoCoMo US Labs carry SecurID hardware fobs -- which is probably appropriate, given the resources they protect -- but many of us could safely switch to phone-hosted OTP tokens, even now.) One of the FAQs on the DoCoMO Labs website offered an extraordinary vision in its description of the company's R&D: "DoCoMo aims to strengthen people's five physical senses and expand their activities by coordinating data that is collected from information sources located everywhere, including a person's own body, and connected 24 hours a day to a network. DoCoMo R&D goes beyond the boundaries of a mobile operator to include such areas as multi-sensory communications, alter-ego interface technology, bio authentication technology, agent technology, super reality communications technology, and sensor network technology. By the acquisition of limitless knowledge, DoCoMo aims to lay a path for realizing a prosperous world." A phone for five senses?! Now that's an expansive baseline! For those enchanted by the vision, Wiley just published the DoCoMo US Labs's first book. For $120, you can plumb the depths of DoCoMo's R&D in, "Next Generation Mobile Systems: 3G & Beyond," edited by Minoru Etoh. -

The Sony 24" Widescreen CRTs were some of the best ever made. They weigh a ton. But they'll do 2048x1280 @ 70fps. (To you HDTV types, that's 1920p60 ... 60 frames per second... not fields.)
Get 'em while they're cheap, and you still can. The only downside is that they have VGA inputs, so they won't work will your audio/video equipment and make a nice HDTV without a scan converter. But they will hook into your VGA card and look just great. -

Re:I know it is capitailism and all...
First things first. There's a "Rich Dad" series: "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" - the advice rich fathers give their children vs. what most fathers tell their kids. Why do which people work for whom? Who owns the company and who works for the owner of the company? There's an entire series - advice for teens, investment advice...
Free tip for saving money (from me): Use Amazon to do your research about books - finding out a hardback book also has a paperback version, which you are willing to buy, the reviews, what books everyone else bought with it, etc.
Then: go to AddAll and use a book shopping 'bot to scan (40?) online book stores. Frequently, you'll find you can get a book and shopping for less than the book from B&N or Amazon. And occasionally, you can beat the number of days required to ship it|them. It's no different than using Froogle or PriceWatch to shop.
I was taught: go first class, then find the lowest price.
Now - a perfect example wealth and what the market (of 1) will bear in a clash of wealth vs. rich (or middle class)[1] in an episode of Taxi: Cooking for Two . Reverend Jim torches Louie's apartment and Jim's dad says he'll pay whatever Louie tells Jim on the phone (Jim's dad is extremely wealthy, as we see in another episode. Alex points out the danger of doing that - that Louie would fill it out for $1M and Louie tells him that's where they are different. Louie says there's a value low enough that (Louie shrugs his shoulders and makes a quick cheep) and high enough to make him (shudder). And Louie sets about to work through his body motions to find the right value. What happens? Louie $30,000 and Jim's dad okays it. Louie is overjoyed until he learns that Jim's dad was expecting the amount to be more like $200k.
[1] Years ago, "middle class" was a defined value. It seems now as though there's upper class and everyone else. -

Re:LDAP is lightweightI don't dispute that DAP may do things that LDAP can't. But you haven't definied what you mean by 'proper distribution of data' means, you're just saying LDAP doesn't do something the way you want. Linux and Windows and OS X and Solaris can share LDAP servers. There are massive global LDAP directories that work very well. More detail, please.
Thanks for the reply. I think there is a degree of confusion here between X.500 distribution and LDAP referrals. A referral system forces the work back onto the client and therefore does not support proper server side distribution. I believe there are performance issues in this approach that do not lend LDAP only servers well to certain performance sensitive applications.
I can see this descending into a rather long debate so here is a good link that I think fairly explains the differences between X.500 and LDAP.
I've only used OpenLDAP, AD and Open Directory (now Computer Associate's eTrust Directory) so I'm willing to be corrected on the exact features of Netscape's directory.
To my knowledge there are only 3 X.500 directories on the market, none of which are free or open source.
:-(- Isode Directory (http://www.isode.com/)
- Siemens DirXServer (http://www.siemens.ie/fixedoperators/CarrierNetw
o rks/Meta/meta_range.htm) - eTrust Directory (http://www3.ca.com/Solutions/Product.asp?ID=160)
I think it gives Red Hat a huge boost.

Re:for those too lazy to RTFA
As someone who's written books with actual URLs on the printed page, I can understand his desire to have some way to update stale links without having to track down and change every copy. Automatically redirecting is not a big deal -- this is how TinyURL and other similar (and useful) services work. Most of the printed links in my new book (see below) are done in this way to keep them from breaking when the destination site changes things around and they don't bother to redirect incoming links to the correct location.
There is a difference between "redirecting" and "hijacking". Redirection by itself is not hijacking.

But then the slogan is missing quotation marks. When I read it, I think "stupid" and you can find many grammarians who agree, regardless of Apple's protestation so it doesn't convey the message Apple intended.
As to the origin of the slogan, this is apple.slashdot.org, hence my reference was to fans of Apple. I.e., people who think different instead of "different" are also likely to use "then" instead of "than".

Are you talking about the portrayal of women in video games? The unrealistic proportions of Lara Croft? You can certainly make a case of it.
But think about the portrayal of men. Seriously, think about it.
It is, by now, common knowledge that the key to modern advertising is creating a feeling of deficit in the target audience, i.e. to make them feel bad about themselves so as to create a need for the product.
Look at this image of Duke Nukem:
http://tinyurl.com/cdhvv
It would appear to objectify both men and women. The girl is there to make Duke Nukem look more manly to guys. It is similar to the models on TV game shows, who fulfill the role of making the male host appear more virile to the female audience. Does this have any effect on the self image of males?
Analyse what it says men should be like. Do most men have these characteristics? How many males in games are far and beyond what is possible in real life? Also, isn't that the point?
Now look at the Duke Nukem "booth babe":
http://tinyurl.com/al66t
Not even this bodybuilder can resemble the unrealistic proportions of Duke Nukem, yet he is obviously far more muscular than the majority of males attending the convention. This shows that both the male and female booth models are those who possess desired physical characteristics in greater proportion than the general population.
Pieces of meat.

Um, the article in question could be interpreted as fulfilling the criteria you just posed. Men are not going to be hired to 'man' the booths by the game producer, hence ignored.
You aren't going to find many articles discussing mistreatment of men. This could just as easily mean it is a silent problem.
(in Australia, it is increasingly common for tv advertisements to portray passive, uncertain, unnattractive males being made fools of by smart, sophisticated and attractive women.)

Should Be On Main PageI really wish this had been posted on the main page. IT or not, far too many people refuse to recognize depression as a problem that's treatable. Myself included. I had gone for 15 years with depression I never thought was serious. My girlfriend (no ex-girlfriend, she left me because of depression) forced me into treatment, and the Pdoc was shocked that I was still alive. All that time, being mostly unhappy, and it didn't need to be that way. I was too stubborn to admit it.
Anyway, some resources. If you are taking/thinking about taking meds, I highly recommend http://www.crazymeds.org/ The site isn't run by a doctor, but having checked his information from a number of different sources, he definitely seems to get the information right. Plus, the site is irreverant, which I appreciate.
The first course of therapy for depression is cognitive behavioral therapy. There is a standard book that explains these techniques. Feeling Good, by David Burns. Amazon link here: http://tinyurl.com/7dxos
I've read a lot of books on depression over the past 18 months, and the best, the most informative, I found was The Noonday Demon, by Andrew Solomon. Amazon again: http://tinyurl.com/99neh
Finally, the links in the post were good, and a good start, but I definitely disagree with some of his advice. Everybody is different, so take the time to hear different viewpoints on diagnoses, symptoms, and cures.
If you're wondering, treatment has made me better than I was, but I still have room for improvement. This is important. Depression may never (or it may) be "cured" for you, but in nearly all cases, treatment will decrease its severity. But not necessarily right away. Treatment is a process, and it takes some time to get there. Be patient.

Be patient.

Re:Overall, a fun hack.
Five years ago when I still worked for Sony we made a data server called MediaCaster http://tinyurl.com/7ud7f that injects metadata into digital tv broadcasts (think EPG, broadcasted Applets, etc.). That server was completely based on open standards and it ran from a Debian based live cd which we created. The product is still being sold to digital TV studios today.
So yes, Sony does use Linux and open standards in its products.
