Re:Time will tell
An Enterprise bridge designed by Apple
Wasn't it in The Next Generation? No tactile feedback on consoles, consistent UI everywhere even when it comes at the expense of usability, and no fuses anywhere (saves a bit of manufacturing cost and keeps the margins high). Sounds like an Apple design to me...
Michael Okuda generally designs the LCARS environment on a Macintosh, running MacroMedia Director.

Re:Today's "true" mythsI'm having trouble spotting the difference, here.
Star Wars is fantasy, the Force, etc; but Trek presents itself as science fiction. The most annoying thing about recent Trek for me is the blatant nonsense presented as science. For instance, chemistry: a meteor is radioactive, instead of being uranium or another real element that would have worked plotwise, it's some made-up substance "beresium". On another episode, there are "deuterium miners" on a desert planet. There are radioactive space storms that travel FTL. There are... innumerable plot devices made up by writers who barely remember science learnt in primary school. I know in SF you're allowed to bend real science, but Trek writers use fake science not because they need to to advance the plot, but because they're ignorant.
Why do I watch it? Optimism; perhaps nostalgia. Not mental stimulation.

Re:Please, no more!!if someone could do to it what was apparently done for Battlestar Galactica
The problem is that the new BSG was created by a defected Trek writer. Pretty unlikely you would get him to come back.

Re:Alien contact?
I look forward to finding out that the Greek Gods were aliens with advanced Quantum Technology (read Ilium by Dan Simmons for that interesting diversion) Actually, isn't there a Star Trek ep based off this?
That would be Who Mourns for Adonais? from season 2.

he was a very compassionate person
I loved the scene in the documentary Trekkies where Doohan talks befriending a suicidal fan.
I found this link which gave more info about that part of the documentary.
http://www.treknation.com/interviews/roger_nygard. shtml
Q: Trekkies like to hear anecdotes. Tell us of some funny incident during the production of the movie.
A: Right in the middle of the most emotional moment of our interview with James Doohan the camera ran out of film, interrupting Mr. Doohan in the middle of his story about a suicide note he had received from a fan. He couldn't wait until the camera was reloaded because he was already late to be on stage. The convention security people said there would not be time for a second interview so it seemed like we would never find out what happened to the suicidal woman. We were determined to find out so we waited four hours until after Mr. Doohan spoke on stage and then signed several hundred autographs and then Denise asked him if he could kindly come back to finish his story. Despite being exhausted from the day's convention events, he graciously agreed, and he told us the rest of the story, which became the most touching moment in the film. I can't believe we almost didn't get that story. -
young T'Pau
Given that T'Pau appears in two fourth season Enterprise episodes (I haven't seen them - they are still showing the third season down here), I would say that both the parent and grand-parent's theories are wrong.

Re:I'm not a trek nut..
For the ultimate example of this "tying up inconsistencies" trait, look no further than this season's episode titled Divergence. They actually gave an in-story explanation for the make-up change from TOS Klingons to TNG and later Klingons (something to do with genetic manipulation, I think). By contrast, when DS9 had to deal with it, they just joked about it.

Re:An idea for the pilot...
I keep expecting Al to show up with his little tricorder dealie. Well, he actually DID turn up in one episode. He didnt have Ziggy or whatever the hell it was called with him, tho... shame.

I can't decide if this was a good or bad thing.Although Star Trek: Enterprise hasn't really rocked at all, it did take a few seasons for TNG to hit their stride. There is a definate problem with focus. Secretly I was hoping they could get Joss Whedon to come in and at least help them map out a story arc over this season and the remaining seasons. Unfortunately, they decided to totally change the premise of the show, make Archer to be some sort of maniac will to do anything to save Earth.
A review at the beginning of the season in USA Today brought up some very good points on the lack of focus in Enterprise. Although Paramount wants you to think they took the show for a dramatic twist this season, nothing really has changed. They are still exploring the unknown, which is what they have been doing the first two seasons. Nothing to see here, move along.
To fix Enterprise they need to:
Be a little more subtle with public commentary. Compare Similitude with TOS's Let That Be Your Last Battleground
More friction among the crew.
Lose the T'Pol-Tucker story line
Slow DOWN THE TRANSPORTER!!!! It's faster than The Original Series'!
There have been a couple good episodes:
And a lot of duds:
A remake of Data's Day: Dear Doctor
An A-Team episode: Marauders
And just a really lame episode: Extinction

Re:Slipping all season?
I agree, that was a good episode. Even TrekNation's review is positive. So was Judgment, which got a "Warp 5" rating on Trek5, which IMO is rather good considering most of their reviews were fair and harsh (but they were right about nearly all of them). And last weeks episode, The Breach was also very good. (Got 4/5 @ TrekNation). So people who say this series is a failure, well... perhaps you should start watching again, because it seems to be getting really good lately.
Regarding the last episode, it was good. However, I hope they don't stop at a little "suicide" to create the Prime Directive, and instead something major... like the accidental distruction of a planet (Give one race WMD and they whipe out another or something). -
The Trek Sex Virus
Slipping is an understatement. Nothing says "it's over" like the crew encountering an alien race that requres a threesome in order to reproduce.
Seriously, if I wanted to see a bunch of oddly proportioned women who wear too much makeup getting it on with average looking guys, I'll watch a porn. -
Re:Apples market research?
I know exactly why it's silent. Apple used engineering to build a convection cooling system similar to the one used in all the late model CRT iMacs. It works well, all the way up to 800mHz PowerPCs. Beyond that, upgrade kits do come with a single fan to put in the bottom, but thats there as a precaution only. (Since not all home machines sit in nice 62 degree controlled rooms).
And as far as space, Paramount uses 16 G4 cubes in fairly tight places to drive the displays seen on Enterprise. Unfortunatly the photos are down, but the article is still out there at TrekNation.
Discussions with the local Apple Reseller before I bought my G4 Cube off eBay tended to point to issues with the sensitivity of the power button being the leading problem with the Cubes, and not heat. I've run D.net on my cube 24/7 while it's been in summer heat, and the CPU diode never reached above 72C (Sure, that seems quite hot for a processor, but it's still within limits, and is reported from the chip, and not a diode nearby).
And I'd love to see a melted cube, as lexan takes quite a bit of heat to melt. That, and the fact that a metal shell seperates the lexan from the core of the computer. -
Re:niceWhere did you get that idea? The annoying child was talking about SGIs running a stupid demo that came on one of the demo disks.
Maybe, but all the computers you saw in Jurassic Park were Macs. What was running on the monitors is another thing all together, and was probably done in Director, just like the monitors on Enterprise, which are run by 16 G4 Cubes... From MacNN.com
UPN's Enterprise television show uses G4 Cubes to power the "Bridge" of the ship: "I just read an article that idrivex (an Apple Developer) wrote after visiting the set of the UPN show Enterprise. In it, he reveals that all the displays on Enterprise are run by 16 G4 Cubes."
