Re:At least there being honest
That is a stupidly naive position. Many small and independent movies won't be made thanks to piracy, as no studio will fund anything that doesn't have a chance at being a mega-hit. Even moderate hits like Zombieland are at risk: http://www.tribalwar.com/forums/showthread.php?p=15074641#post15074641
You aren't hitting a bunch of Hollywood fat cats by downloading movies. You aren't Robin Hood, and you aren't doing what's "right". You are simply killing off adult drama. We won't see another era where absolute classics like Raging Bull, The Passenger, The Conversation, etc. are released in close succession, because no one will take a chance on such films. Instead, look forward to a cinema landscape that consists of Transformers and Twilight. Thanks.

possible spiritual successor to TRIBES?
What I'm really excited about this GDC is a possible spiritual successor to TRIBES. Garage Games has a booth there, and they employ many of the people who created the original TRIBES game, which most of you probably remember as one of the most innovative FPSs of its time (vehicles, jet packs, skiing, command map, etc.).
There have been lots of hints lately that GG will be unveiling something similar to TRIBES to show off their new Torque Shader Engine, but they are being very coy about the whole thing. Speculation is that they don't own the IP to TRIBES, so they need to be very carefull about comparing what they are doing to TRIBES.
here are some details.
a quote from an employee at GG:
"The only scary thing is that, while the GDC demo is expected to turn more than a few heads, unrealistic expectations are dangerous. Yes, you guys would probably flip your shit if you saw the demo, but I don't think GarageGames wants to be known for crushing hopes and dreams. I don't want to dampen the speculation, just temper it a bit.
Keep the hopes and dreams. We've still got them." -
Re:Obviously he wasn't a Slashdotter...
Reminds myself of the Great Tribalwar Goatse of CNN, Cnet, etc. They definately picked a crappy time to do it (around WTC attacks), but the guy's bandwidth was being sapped horribly by the big news sites.

Vivendi for missing the target with Tribes
As the author noted a lot of BF2 has Tribes like qualitites, and even the mentioned Halo was actually inspired by Tribes.
Vivendi for christ sake when in the hell are you going to pull your head out of your ass and do Tribes right. Look at that BF2 excitement, and ironically the BF2 patch and bug issues remind one of Tribes 2 when it was released.
Kudos to great attempt at "good" MP FPS. Console folks just dont have a clue. Plus, if it doesnt support a mouse and keyboard...forget it.

Just like the music industryThe objections here to a no-publisher model are surprising given the general SlashDot antagonism to the MPAA and RIAA and the publishers they represent. Game developers can work just like music and movie artists, mostly for the love of the work, and distributing under an indy label where they reap most of any profits. Moreover, they can follow the open source model and make frequent ongoing releases of beta material instead of waiting for just the right time in the game marketplace.
To see a relevant example, take a look at the Legends project, which uses the successor to the engine used for Tribes 2 to develop a new game. Legends is nowhere near retail quality, but that's mostly for lack of artists, which they now have (contributed from the Renegades project). Gamers have the ability to join the project and make this game what they truly want, just as open source users can extend an open source product to meet their own needs. Got a gaming itch that no retail game satisfies? Come scratch it by becoming a developer!

Tribes is not dead yet
First there is the Legends game based off of the Torque engine. This game is very Tribes-like.
http://hosted.tribalwar.com/legends/
Then there is Renwerx, which will virtually redo Legends in the near future. They are looking for help.

There are many excellent free games for win32.
America's Army
Enemy Territory
Quake I & II

Great game, release date is Oct 5th - no linux
Can't wait for the full release of the game this week. Hard to believe they started work on it just over 2 years ago.
Having played the closed beta, open beta, and demo extensively, I can really say this is truely a tribes sequel (even though it takes place before t1 and t2). This is probably the most fun i've had playing an online game in quite awhile.
There are still issues though - there are still bugs in the demo, which is the same code as the 'gold' code. When will developers learn that they need to wait to release the product until all known bugs (especially gameplay altering ones) are worked out...if anything, you would have thought they would have learned from the horrible release that tribes 2 had. At least the bugs aren't as bad as the ones tribes 2 had, but still...there is no excuse for this.
Also, it looks like there may not be a linux server (and certainly, no linux port of the game like there was for t2....) I'm not losing any sleep over the no linux client, but I do think it's a shame that there is no linux server. Apparently the problem is they would have to license the havok engine for linux as well - and I guess they didn't want to pony up the money for it...not sure if it would be really worth it in the longrun i guess.
The developers hang out quite a bit over on the Tribalwar forums. -
HUD mods
For those of you who don't like the default head's-up display, this is moddable, just like the original Tribes. I came across this HUD, which is a lot more like Tribes 1. (I play using the "high-res" version, even though I'm running at medium resolution, because doing so makes the map extra big.)

Re:Too bad it's on file planet.
Read this.
I just did it with 0 problems, it took me 5 minutes to get the Tribes 2 CD key. -
Outdoor environment rendering....
This is a very hot technical issue in gaming right now. The last 5 years have netted us decent techniques for doing network communications for low-latency gaming; with those in place now, we turn again to graphics.
Tribes and Tribes 2 were some of the first games to take on outdoor environments and do them well. Now, we have Unreal Tournament 2004 and Far Cry leading the pack with gloriously realistic outdoor playspaces.
It's only a matter of time before next generation gaming engines like these turn to non-linear gameplay such as what's in GTA 3 and we wind up with a world simulation that has a level of realism approaching reality. -
Game based on torque
The entire torque engine is doing very well for it's self, and I just wanted to chime in and say:
Legends: The Comming of a New Age is comming along nicely. It's free, and can be downloaded from here. It's made with torque's entire engine, and is enjoying a moderately good following so far.
Good game, but, I've been too distracted by UT2004 to play. I need to make a point to play legends more.

Linux is GREAT for gamesJust a *few* big games that run WITHOUT Wine[X]
- UT2004 (Also Unreal - 2003 work as well)
- Neverwinter Nights
- SAVAGE: The Battle for Newerth
- Enemy Territory
- Quake3
- Americas Army
And of course tons more run with Wine[X] including those Direct3D only ones.
Lets not forget the GREAT Linux games too...
NO reason not to use linux for games! -
Re:Formerly Loki Version Available? It wont be. Thrax (Sierra guy currently working on Tribes: Vengeance) said this:
We licensed that to Loki, and the resulting game belongs to them, and not us (the intellectual property is ours, but we can't sell the Linux version). So it won't be made available. If we had the legal right to give it away, we certainly would.
From here (last post). -
Legends! It's free (~80 MB download), runs under Linux, Windows and Mac OS 9/X, and comes with both server and client for all three platforms...
Loosely based on Tribes...

Re:Don't know 10 bps
big lmao !! ahahah
and then they say its dean thats smoking pipe.. -
Two Suggestions: Legends and Vendetta
The first great (FREE) game is called Legends. It is very similar to Tribes and is based off the Torque engine. Fun gameplay, cool maps and an integrated map editor. Get it for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X at http://hosted.tribalwar.com/legends/
The second game is Vendetta. It is a space combat MMORPG, and since it's a pre-beta game it's free. Don't let that scare you away, though. The gameplay is spectacular, as are the graphics. The community's even fairly decent. Get that one at http://vendetta.guildsoftware.com.
Sadly, neither of these games include source code. Draw your own conclusions. -
Doesn't need wine, its free, but it is still Beta
I would recommend checking out Legends. The gameplay, weapons and physics are very similar to Tribes (in my opinion). It uses the same engine as Tribes 2 (Torque), but with many more bug fixes and updates.
Like I said in the subject, it is still Beta, but it does have a Linux Release and its free.
Dark Horizons: Lore is another Torque game that is also in open beta, but you need to sign up for it. I haven't played it yet, but I hear it is fantastic.

Linux distro's need to partner...
More aggressively with game developers. I mean its sort of sad that even though there are a handful of active commercial (and non-commercial albeit high quality as in my sig) game developers who are supporting Linux there is still the perception that Linux doesn't have games.
Gentoo seems to get it, but I'd expect to see a more aggressive commercial distribution seriously pimping this and I believe in we really need some good exposure like this. -
Re:Speedwise..
And I'll be trying out JuK, too, I've never heard of it before today.
Same with Rythmbox for me. I've been using Xmms for so long, Zinf/Freeamp was OK because of the playlist manager, but its so unstable I can't use it regularly without losing patience.
I'll trade your recommendatoin with a recommendation for Legends its a new freeware FPS game for Linux and Windows that is way beyond anything I've seen released for free before. Give it a shot. Juk??! Pffft! -
Re:Dear Tribes: eye-candy aint good for what ails
T:V has a few aces up it's sleeve that T2 didn't have. The Current Producer of the game is Chris Mahnken (aka Thrax Panda) someone who unlike DaveG of fucking up t2 fame actually has real honest to goodness competition experience with Tribes. Irrational also hired Michael Johnston, (aka KineticPoet) a well know community member and modder, who also has a ton of competition experience. Neither of those guys liked T2 base.
Both of them post with some regularity on TribalWar and in in the Tribes On Topic Forum. If you want to stay up to date with what's going on in Tribes land, that forum (tot, not general) is a very good source of information and discussion (and flames) -

Re:Oh Please...
Actually, some games are reported to run slightly faster under some circumstances under Wine.
As shown here, for example.
I'm not saying this is true for everything, but there are cases where it is. -
Re:Tribes 2 Patch
Not quite.
Tribes 2 was developed by Sierra. After the game was released, and several patches were released, most of the T2 team was released.
A new patch has been announced - no idea when it will be released.
In addition, Sierra is releasing T2: Fast Attack.
With Loki out of business, I don't see these patches or T2:FA being released to Linux. I'm not thrilled about that - T2 runs a touch faster on Linux, but the sound is better on W2K - take your pick. Framerate, or the audio cues.

Sierra Blows goats. (I have pictures...)I was in a flame war on a portmaster/radius mailing list about how putting a banner (to protest) on your website was lame, and some webmaster from Sierra got into a flame war with me... Go figure...
I have attended Tribescon 1999 and Tribescon 2000, even have a signed Tribes 1 box with all the developers on it. (Very cool!) Very sad to hear about Sierra's sleazy business practices. But then Tribes2 was just about patched enough to play. Wonder if they ever get the VCR Demo record function working correctly. Guess we just have to wait and see.
Also, I wonder who shows up from Dynamix at Tribecon3. Humm, Ill buy first round of beers for the Dynamix crew. (-;

Been there, done that.
The clever boys over at the Tribes Shoutcast Network (I think it was actually TheRedDread of Team 5150, but that may have been a different spectator viewing app) have been running an amazing little app called TribesTV, which let you connect to a video stream from the point of view of an ingame observer, realtime.
The major Tribes 1 matches were incredibly popular, and I can't wait for something similar for Tribes 2. The most impressive part (to me, anyways) was that this was all done without any help from the games developers.
Note: it would appear that the URLs don't work right now - Tribalwar has just moved servers and it looks like they missed some DNS entries.

Ugh, Tribes 2... A Triber's experience.... This is a sad, sad game.
Before you mod me down, let me explain. As a triber, I enjoyed many things about Tribes. You didn't have to have the fastest machine in the world (133 mhz would do) to run it, it was fast-paced and very fun, and really stable.
Now we get Tribes 2, after a three year wait. I bought the game for $49.95 from a local store, brought it home, and installed it on my Win2k gaming machine (it's nothing too great, but it plays Q3, Tribes, and various other games really well.)
The installation process goes fairly well, no big problems. It is a huge game, though, taking 550MB of space (standard install).
I start the game. Three required patches available (keep in mind, this is the same night the game was released!) I downloaded the patches and attempted to apply them, only to get a few errors regarding the files being invalid.
To make a long story short, Dynamix shipped a bad disc. I was lucky enough to get it. I went back out and found another copy of Tribes 2 at another store. Came back, uninstalled the previous copy, and installed from the new disc.
Started Tribes 2 and reapplied the three patches. They applied this time around. Tribes 2 launches and crashes, yet again. I used a fix described at TribalWar in order to switch from OpenGL to Direct3D without entering the game. Restarted the game -- wow, I was in!
Now it wanted my CD key. Tribes 2 uses an authentication system (Windows XP/Office XP, anyone?) in order to create an account for you to play with other people via the Internet. I input my CD key.
"CD key rejected. Your key is already in use."
Uuuuuuuuugh! I reinstalled Tribes 2 and reapplied the patches. Woah, it accepts the CD key. I went ahead and created my account. There are plenty of servers, many with a great ping. I joined a CTF game, to be greeted by none other than a GPF.
I restarted Tribes 2. Re-entered the game. No GPF this time. Woohoo! I was about to play the most anticipated game of 2001! I join the game, OoO, 40 fps and it looks great.
I step outside (spawned inside) and my framerate drops to 7fps. This is with everything turned down at 640x480 on a 550 mhz PIII and a Voodoo3 (yes, I know, getting old, but it's way above T2's system requirements stated on the box, which are a 350mhz PII.)
Needless to say, I switched back to Tribes, which many people seem to be doing. That disc didn't earn its permanent slot in my CD-ROM.
I decided to read Sierra's message boards, where there was a thread about poor performance. You know what the developer's response was to us 3dfx owners? "Get a newer computer!" And they claim to support 3dfx chipsets from the V2 up.
Dynamix has taken everything that was great about T1 and thrown it down the drain. You have to have the fastest machine and expect slower gameplay.
To sum it up:
- - This game is very buggy, plays like a beta
- - Very unstable, crashes all the time
- - Graphics are poor unless you've got a 1.2ghz Athlon and a GeForce 2, even then it's jumpy
Dynamix was aiming to please people like IGN and Daily Radar, not the common gamer. Definitely not recommended. Many long-time Tribers feel the same as I do.

Tribes runs under Linux (with WINE)
The folks over at Linux Tribes have managed to get Tribes running on WINE.
I'm not entirely sure how much hacking it takes to get it to work, but they say the stability is about the same as running Tribes under Windows (as in, Tribes will crash about the same amount whether being run in Windows or WINE).
Completely off-topic, one of the guys who runs LinuxTribes, Bad_CRC, is also one of the guys who helped make one of the "All your base" videos floating around.

Yes, it's him.
Yes, it's that Bad_CRC. He also runs a Linux Tribes site @ http://www.tribalwar.com/linuxtribes/.

Linux gamingIs at a critical stage. Please buy as many games for linux as you can or they won't keep making them.
Tribes 2 will be coming out shortly for Linux, and if we don't support it, other companies will hesitate on making that investment.

Tribes - How'd that feel?
Well, lets start way way back and work our way up.
64 days.
Bards Tale series, Ultima and Wasteland, and of course Gauntlet and Gauntlet expansion..
And Borderbund Battleship (I think that was it)
Amiga days.
SuperFrog, Zool series, bouncey and Barbarian.
Early PC days
Duke Nukem, Command and Conquer, Warcraft, Q1, Heretic, Blood
Today.
Tribes, Half-life, Solider of Fortune, Q2, Q3A
Vampire Masquerade single player..
(Waiting for Tribes2 and Halo in 2001)
My first ipx lan game was Duke Nukem. The detail on the battles where simply amazing. You could plant laser trip wires, first BFG rockets!
Tribes.. What can I saw about this intense multiplayer, team combat game.
I freaking LOVE it. Been playing 10+ hours a week for 2 years! The gfx are damn good on 3dfx cards. (yes kicks the geforce's ass)
The ability to use sound packs. My current soundpack is over 700 megs now.
Last night, this guy grabs the flag, I'm in a heavy, flip to mortar, wait for the guy to just about go over the mountain, and launch a big green smoke trail mortar over it.
Almost 6 seconds later.
"Your Flag was dropped"
DAMN, 1 in a million shot. Was soo sweet.
The game just can not compare with other FPS games. The freedom of movement, the weapons, the team play. THE pure evilness you can pull on people. Sneak up behind them, and mine-disc em.
Snipe from a mountain top, making sure flag grabbers dont make it too far with your flag.
Ive been to Tribescon 1999 (2nd place, thanks dynanmix for the pocketwatch)
And Tribescon 2000 - First place! (Thanks Colosus for setting it up, and the 101 bux first prize!)

Re:Valid concerns...unfortunately, it looks like there is not going to be a linux client for Tribes 2.
Dave Georgeson says there still may be a SERVER ported to linux if they have time, but that's not guaranteed, and the linux client is looking very unlikely.
Other games which were promising linux ports are also dropping off the bandwagon. Duke Nukem Forever has now said that a linux port just isn't worth their time (even though they are based off the UT engine which has a Linux port already) and it's not gonna happen.
No games for linux without a market, and no market without games. The age old problem. And companies faced with losing money (apparently) on linux ports just aren't feeling that it's worth it anymore.
Hopefully the numbers will continue to grow, and companies will start to see profits by releasing linux games. For me, as a gamer and a linux user, there is nothing I want more than to see my favorite games on my favorite OS.
