If you're burning the candle at both ends at age 54 might that be problematic? Maybe some learning about the finite nature of life would serve you better than tech skills. Maybe you're one of those rarities for whom obsessive work is truly better - it's possible. I have 11 years on you, and I promise that you won't get that overtime back, and I'd urge you to examine your decision on how to use your time.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm already with you on that. While I *can* burn that candle, it's usually limited to those times when that extra effort is needed. I was merely commenting on the myth that youngsters can work harder/longer than us more seasoned folks. I also have a lot of experience and skill that I could transfer to newer workers. I've always tried to be professional and do the best work that can be done, but it's just work and I'm far from obsessive about it, now more than ever, and I'll tell you why.

I'm very aware of the finite nature of life. After 20 years together, almost half my life at the time, my wife Sue died of a brain tumor in January 2006, just six weeks after diagnosis. Remember Sue... I've been alone, and haven't dated anyone since. I continued to work and save as we always had, she being 19 years older than me we knew she would retire much sooner than I did. I got laid off last June, but because of our fugal lifestyle I'm debt-free and financially independent w/o a job on my current budget for the rest of my life. Of course, I'd much rather have Sue back. Now I'm trying to figure out what to do with myself next...

Like devices that don't have removable batteries, bendy phones and most of all holding it wrong, it's only a problem when Apple is involved. Other manufacturers do the same or worse - Samsung Galaxy S6 cracked at the same pressure where the iPhone 6 bent - and people couldn't care less.

It will be the same with Androids that don't have headphone jacks. Sure sure, some people have said they wont buy them. And next Monday, they'll still not be buying the Pixel 2 and not caring about it. Also on next Monday, they'll still not be buying an iPhone 7 or later - but whining about it.

If there were massive crashes every day, why would they be news?

Yep, still news. Because road closures (usually what happens with trucks crashing) is something people need to know so they can avoid the area.

In all honesty, though, European roads are designed better on average. They have roundabouts but few rotaries, while Americans have rotaries that cause maximal contention points and more crashes. They have long merge lanes and stronger lane-control rules, whereas American highways are designed with the briefest window to get on the highway or else you're getting right back off, and so you're contending with people trying to exit while you're trying to enter. They've also got better driver's education--we learn to operate a car, and my driver's test was three right turns in a parking lot; I failed it; and the proctor passed me in frustration on my fourth try by falsifying some of the numbers.

Funny, I have seen multiple roundabouts, but no rotaries, in the US at least. Some admittedly seriously screwed up signaled intersections. Modern highways all have longer entrance/exit merge areas, except for those built prior to 1965 or so, as compared to the 0 merge areas on many autobahns in Europe. On driver's education, absolutely, it's far better in Europe. My impression is that if you can start the car and put it in gear, you'll get a license in half the US.

EU statistics for 2014 show that heavy trucks were responsible for 15% of deaths caused by road collisions. In the U.S, of 6 million crashes each year, 0.5 million (8.3%) involve trucks, and are responsible for 9% of deaths caused by road collisions. Unfortunately, nobody's doing the statistics of collisions per VMT, and what you really want to know is fatal and non-fatal collisions per vehicle miles traveled. For this particular problem, we want to know the statistics for highway collisions per highway miles traveled.

Does it really matter per mile traveled? Or total number per year? Btw, for 2008:

• 123,918 large trucks and 13,263 buses involved in non-fatal crashes
• 49,084 large trucks and 7,123 buses involved in injury crashes
• 73,047 injuries in crashes involving large trucks and 16,760 injuries in crashes involving buses
• 74,834 large trucks and 6,140 buses involved in tow-away crashes
• 2,609 large trucks and 11 buses involved in hazmat (HM) placard crashes

and in 2015, 11% of US fatalities were truck related.

The U.S. doesn't allow trucks to ride the left lane in most locales. They ride in the center lane at speed, away from the busy right-lane contention points---you know, the string of constant intersections. Apparently most crashes occur there. Because of the high speed of travel in the left lane, trucks would either need a lot of stopping distance (which nobody is giving them) or a lower speed (causing dangerous lane changes around them, creating additional contention points and more collisions), so banning them from the left lane is sensible.

You, you pointed out problem #1 with trucks on the highway - they require significantly more distance to stop at speed. The European solution to require them to drive slower immediately works out. Also, since they require more distance, they should keep larger spacing between them and whomever is in front of them. So, the right lane contention becomes really no contention if they're a) moving more slowly and b) keep appropriate spacing. Trucks are a hazard to regular vehicles, and shouldn't be permitted to endanger them unnecessarily. They should share the roads responsibly. Right now, in the US, they do not.

Lawyers demand stupidly high settlement amounts all the time, and they rarely ever get what they first asked for. They go through rounds of negotiations until either they have a meeting of minds, or if they don't then the court proceedings begin.

Having said that, going to court is risky for both sides, so in most cases they prefer to settle. In this case, Eastwood refused a settlement offer entirely and effectively said "have at me bro", and won.

Anyways, there have been a few times where some congress critters have proposed having a 90 day notice requirement for the ADA before the business can be sued, but all of the lawyers who sue for ADA violations have lobbied hard against it every time, including the lawyer that sued Eastwood, under the argument that there should be strict liability for this. I liked how Eastwood put it "The lawyers in these cases drive off in a new Mercedes, while the disabled person drives off in a wheelchair." In other words, if the lawyer makes say $15,000 in a settlement, the disabled person who they supposedly represent makes about $1,000. And these settlements happen ALL THE TIME, including against business owners who themselves are wheelchair bound, and in such cases, you'd figure "if the owner is wheelchair bound and has no difficulty getting around their business, then why are they getting sued for having an inaccessible business?"

BTW, for an idea of what strict liability is, it essentially means that there doesn't need to be any proof of mens rea or mental culpability. Read this, it's both highly entertaining and enlightening:

Doom isn't 3D accelerated and - as pointed out quite explicitly in the link you posted - they did it "for funsies" because Nobody* bought SGI systems to run crude 3D accelerated games.

An ideal rating system would have a flat histogram across all movies and across all critics, but Rotten Tomatoes' is not flat (see the second graph on that page) and so it's just downright clumsy. It's amazing that it works at all!

And when a critic likes or dislikes two similar movies, I want to see which one he or she likes more, but the fresh/rotten criteria prevents that. Even a 5-star rating system doesn't have enough precision much of the time.

This is why movies should be rated not in isolation but against each other. To rate a movie, you would have to say it is better or worse than another one of the same genre. Software would use these ratings to organize the movies from least to most liked using Condorcet or a similar method, and assign each movie a percentile ranking in order to create a perfectly flat histogram.
