Re:How about you answer the question?
As promised, are this year's high temperatures due only to El Nino with "nothing particular" connecting them to anthropogenic global warming? If that's true, it should be easy to confirm by comparing this El Nino to past El Ninos. This graph (backup) shows global mean surface temperature (GMST) during just El Ninos in recent decades (excluding Pinatubo). It has a positive slope. If this year's high temperatures are due only to El Nino, why are El Nino years getting warmer at about the rate projected by the IPCC? Once again, ocean heat content (OHC) reveals much more of the cumulative radiation absorbed over the last few decades than GMST does.
In response to a request for peer-reviewed literature, Lonny Eachus quotes from the same opinion piece that "Jane Q. Public" quoted above without linking. Will Lonny Eachus admit that he wasn't quoting peer-reviewed literature, despite the clear request? [Dumb Scientist]
You neglect to mention that before that, I cited IPCC's own statement on the matter. Are you also going to claim IPCC's comments aren't based on peer-reviewed papers? For example, will you now claim that their summary is not based on peer-reviewed science? You really can be an idiot sometimes. And the more you try to prove somebody wrong, the more idiotic you have tended to get. [Jane Q. Public, 2015-10-25]
No, you repeated the same IPCC link I gave you hours earlier and (innocently?) misrepresented it while calling Eric Holthaus a "bozo":
I'd be fascinated to read peer-reviewed literature saying CC will cause fewer Cat 4/5 hurricanes. Doubt it exists, but may have missed it. [Eric Holthaus]
IPCC, you bozo: http://ipcc.ch/pdf/assessment...
"it is likely that the global frequency of tropical cyclones will either decrease... or remain ... unchanged, concurrent with a likely increase in ... maximum wind speed and rain rates."
That's one. ... For somebody who likes to insult others so much, you sure don't know much about the subject. [Jane/Lonny Eachus, 2015-10-24]Eric Holthaus asked about Cat 4/5 hurricanes, but Jane/Lonny Eachus couldn't/wouldn't answer the actual question. Instead, Lonny called Eric a "bozo" and desperately tried to deflect attention away from Cat 4/5 hurricanes. Ironically, Lonny's quote should have been a clue that answering an imaginary question about the frequency of all hurricanes (Cat 1+) isn't the same as answering Eric's actual question about Cat 4/5 hurricanes because those have the maximum wind speeds and rain rates which will "likely increase".
Prof. Adam Sobel answered Eric's actual question with TS.26 on p. 108 here, which is also Fig. 14.17 on p. 1250 of Ch. 14.

How so? The US will still be run by the ultra-rich, privileged upper-class aided by their well-fed lackeys, the lobbying companies. Oh, you mean the puppets office will be different? Doesn't really count.
To hazard a guess, I think he means most of us are getting fed up with the so-called social "justice" warriors who are continuously up in arms and having hissy fits over any perceived (though probably not real) slight. Yesterday provided a perfect example. Two guys on twitter made up a #boycottstarwarsvii hashtag, claiming the movie was racist against white people. Of course, SJWs went apoplectic with self-righteous indignation, and it even made CNN & The Daily Show, but it turns out it was all just a troll from the get-go. SJWs seem to go full retard every day.

"especially from companies selling you tickets."
especially from companies selling you tickets.
Duh? Name me any situation (movies, software, music, cars, etc) where it isn't hysterically stupid (and to an obvious in-your-face degree) for reviewers (or their publisher) and sellers to have any sort of relationship.
Fandango reviews are for the kind of people who get their software from "app stores," i.e. pretty much the stupidest people that you will ever meet.
None of this means movie reviews are a bad idea, nor does it mean that buying tickets from a website are a bad idea. You just don't use the same fucking website for both things.
You knew this since you were 5 years old. You knew this when your parents or grandparents got a copy of "Consumer Reports" before shopping for anything expensive. The only time you don't know it, is when you make a conscious effort to become a stupider person (i.e. whenever a new iPhone or XBox comes out), presumably in the interests of world safety.

Re:Bullspit
Heh, I think this tweet is apropos:
https://twitter.com/NeckbeardH...2003: "I replaced you with a set of very small shell scripts."
2013: "I replaced your scripts with a six-figure enterprise DevOps platform."I worked through some large companies trying to do this transition. They were literally trying to transition from a BOSS (bunch 'o shell scripts) repository to OpsCode Chef. The idea was that there were previously lots of Developer groups, throwing shit at a separate Operations group, and having us System Engineers in the middle trying to coordinate it all while also keeping the Systems Architects and other disparate managers happy. At some point they had formed a DevOps group to try to merge all of that, which was good, but last I heard they had disbanded the DevOps team and were moving on to the next buzzword already. Anyway, most of us left and I have no idea what they're doing now, but I imagine a lot of the Chef cruft ended up being an inspiration for http://www.explainxkcd.com/wik...
Anyway, it's been an interesting buzzwordy ride, and some of the technologies, particularly docker stuff, seems genuinely useful for delivering bits, enough so that I've started using it for personal projects at home. But I agree that most of it is just reinventing poorly what we had in the old days with pipelines for testing and packaging and version control and cluster management.

Referenced app not on app store
So I went searching for the app in question and lo and behold, it isn't available on the Apple app store. I was inclined to think it was a conspiracy and that Apple didn't want people returning phones because they contained a certain processor. After some digging I found this on Reddit and this on Twitter explaining why it was taken down. Long story short the dev took it down saying "We will take the App down in 24 hours until we can release a decent update."

That's because trans people are treated like shit. Constantly.
Which Elia responds
maybe that's just a (legit) opinion, I still fail to see how that kind of invasive surgery on kids can b cherished
anyway it's months that in Italy school after school sneaks genderism lessons in without parents consent. Not cool
I 100% agree with you transpersons need access to treatment, but gender reassignment surgery is dangerous and I think someone should have to at least be a consenting adult before they make that decision. It's a huge decision that children shouldn't just make on a whim as it's a lifelong commitment. On top of that, the suicide rate of people that HAVE had gender reassignment doesn't look that much better to me than those that haven't had it. On the flip side, the ones that survive are more satisfied with their lives.
That said, Elia's issue was with Italian schools using some controversial teaching methods and encouraging children to have reassignment surgery, which was all done without parents knowing about it.
Which apparently made him a transphobic bigot. His opinion, IMHO, is not that hateful or off the wall.

Re:How about more offensive public mailing lists? What the AC above me said
I think you need to do a little more research into SJW history.
Just look at what happened to the Opal community to see why people have a major beef with "SJWs"
https://github.com/opal/opal/i...
Go back and read the twitter conversation that shit storm was started from
https://twitter.com/elia/statu...
He had an opinion on gender reassignment surgery being done on kids, that's not transphobic, but a couple SJW's started calling for his head. At first they were told to stuff it, so they went to twitter to drum up a mob
https://twitter.com/CoralineAd...
Which included attacking anyone on the project that disagree with them
https://twitter.com/CoralineAd...
Ultimately this Code of Conduct was merged into the project. Now check out who it was that wrote that CoC, that's right the same person that started the issue is the person that wrote the CoC that got shoehorned into the project of someone's opinion on kids having gender reassignment surgery.
What's worse is this line:This code of conduct applies both within project spaces and in public spaces when an individual is representing the project or its community.
was added after the fact because by the original CoC, Elia Schito didn't do anything wrong.

Re:Who cares?
The worst thing that ever happened to Twitter was the retweet, just like the worst thing that ever happened to facebook was "share". Both of these things dramatically reduced the usability and usefulness of those sites. It changed the social media from a fun way to keep up with friends to an avalanche of nonsense you don't care about with a few nuggets buried somewhere inside.
Little known feature (for me, at least): you can disable retweets for specific users you follow. This single feature made it so I could follow users who are retweet-heavy, like pmarca. Instructions here.
Since I also use Tweetbot, I had to delete my cache for this to kick in, but it does work across third party clients.

Actually... Yuuuup, 5 seconds of research later:
http://sarah.thesharps.us/tag/...Third Wave (Professional Victim) Feminist, with posts pushing the lie about the gender gap (there are more women than men getting STEM degrees now), and a post about the "Donglegate" lynch mob, wherein a professional outrage mob was directed by professional victim and gender identity con artist Adria Richards to shame and destroy the lives of two men making a joke about forking and dongles, suggesting that hearing a joke you disagree with is equivalent to being physically attacked.
In short: She might be a gifted programmer, but she's a weak willed human being, and her having a professional freakout about Linus making a joke about being intimidating isn't surprising -- it's a calculated maneuver. Expect something else to come up soon -- as mentioned, Linus will be deemed too problematic to be allowed to remain in Linux, or the Professional Victims will demand special treatment for Women in Linux Development.

Twitter is creepy
Somehow Twitter has become a legitimate conduit for celebrities, politicians, terrorists and even nation states. The US Department of State today tweets "Enjoyed speaking with so many young people passionate about environment" (Kerry) even as he is jetting off for the TPP signing that is 100% guaranteed to remove whatever trivial impediments remain to frictionless off-shoring the last of our manufacturing base to whatever seething pollution hell-hole is cheapest this week.
We're governing ourselves with massively multiplayer bullshit propagation system run by bay area grifters.

Somebody Else's Problem (Was:Sandy Hook)
Dan Hodges said it best:
In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the US gun control debate. Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was over.
America decided that mental health care is Somebody Else's Problem.
Everybody knows who to call if you see someone with a broken leg.
They'll send a truck with flashing lights to pick the person up.What do you do when somebody has a broken brain?
Everybody passes the buck. Not my problem, somebody else's problem.
Well, eventually the buck gets passed to a bunch of grade schoolers.
The grade schoolers can't make it somebody else's problem.
They pay the price. While America believes that mental health care is Somebody Else's Problem, it will never be over.

Re:what about moving around people gumming up the
Since my comment about the paper is what this entire exchange has been about, which YOU started by the way, how could it be irrelevant? It's so utterly, bizarrely illogical that you would rant for so long about something that you say yourself is irrelevant... [Jane Q. Public, 2015-09-30]
No, your comment about that irrelevant paper was completely irrelevant. Here's why:
... Further, if your quoted passage (that was presented out of context as has been your usual habit) was NOT from the paper, then my mistake. Fine. But I cleared that up straight away.
... [Jane Q. Public, 2015-09-30]If?! IF the quote I showed him which I labeled "2013" wasn't from a 2015 paper, then Lonny's comment about a 2015 paper wasn't what this entire exchange has been about!
... So what the hell are you ranting about? There is nothing more to be said.
... [Jane Q. Public, 2015-09-30]Lonny, you just seemed to realize that your "response" was completely irrelevant. So we're back at square one: I responded to Lonny's claims about the implications of a supposedly "missing hot spot" but Lonny hasn't yet provided a relevant answer. Didn't Jane/Lonny claim he has a reply?
... You can talk about lapse rate here all you want, but that wasn't I was referring to on Twitter, mistakenly or not.
... [Jane Q. Public, 2015-09-30]Lonny, you've been referring to the lapse rate on Twitter for years, every time you regurgitated that "missing hot spot" talking point. For instance:
.@ClimateSystem doesn't admit that absence of a hotspot means (AT LEAST) the models don't property account for the lapse rate.
... Like for example, tell us what adjustments to make to the lapse rates to make the hotspot problem disappear? [Lonny Eachus, 2015-04-07]As explained above, making the lapse rate steeper (i.e. making the temperature drop faster with altitude) would make the supposed "hotspot problem" disappear. A steeper lapse rate = a stronger greenhouse effect.
If that's not clear, watch Andrew Dessler explain (at 4:19) that the greenhouse effect would cease to exist if the upper troposphere weren't colder than the surface.
Do you know what the tropospheric "hot spot" is, or why it's necessary for global warming? [Lonny Eachus, 2015-07-04]
No, as Dessler just explained the cold upper troposphere is a fundamental requirement of the greenhouse effect. Reduce the lapse rate to zero, and the greenhouse effect vanishes. Therefore, a steeper lapse rate (as in the case of a supposedly "missing" hot spot), results in a stronger greenhouse effect.
Neat, huh? Isn't physics awesome, Lonny?
... a high- emissivity gas generally doesn't "hold heat" well. It radiates it back

Re:what about moving around people gumming up the
According to radiosonde and satellite data, no hotspot = almost no water vapor feedback. Which of course is supposed to be 2/3 to 3/4 of the AGW positive feedback. Not showing up. [Lonny Eachus, 2015-09-29]
Let us suppose for the moment that the "hot spot" really has been missing while the surface has warmed. What would the implications be?
The implications for attribution of observed global warming are nil, as far as I can see. The regulation of lapse rate changes by atmospheric convection is expected to work exactly the same way whether global temperature changes are natural or forced (say, by greenhouse gases from fossil fuel burning).
The implications for climate sensitivity are also roughly nil. The total feedback from water vapour and lapse-rate changes depends only on the changes in relative humidity in the upper troposphere, not on the lapse rate itself (see Ingram, 2013). In fact, in climate models where the lapse rate becomes relatively steeper as climate warms (as would be the case with a missing hot spot), the total warming feedback is very slightly stronger because the increased lapse rate increases the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide and other well-mixed greenhouse gases. So a missing hot spot would not mean less surface warming, at least according to our current understanding. [Prof. Steven Sherwood, 2013]

Re:At least he still has a sense of humor
At first I didn't think https://twitter.com/snowden could be the real Edward Snowden. That pose on his profile pic has got to be the douchey-est photo of him I've ever seen. And yet it comes up as a "Verified" Twitter account. How could they verify that?
For now, I'm still calling it out as a DoD / CIA / NSA InfoOps character defamation account

To clarify my last tweet, not saying the bugs were intentionally added.
