Demoracy is worthless...
...the reality is the reason we have so many problems is because people who are irrational have equal power with the people who are rational.
For those who rail at these words, the reality is right now we live in a lawless oligarchy that's has been basically stealing everything that is nailed down and has been since the US's founding. To even suggest any modern capitalist state "is a democracy" is just utter bullshit when it has been owned lock stock and barrel by corporations for most western states history with brief interruptions of world war 1 and world war 2 and the cold war to try to soften the ruthless harshness of capitalist societies.
Now with the fall of the USSR corporations are unchecked and out of control and being enabled by a heavily indoctrinated public.
Don't think so? Every time IP law came up for review to benefit the public it was pushed to benefit the rich and their corporations.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
The reality is the general public in the US worships their robber barrons. George carlin said it best about americans.
Look at the distribution of wealth, it is just insane, anyone who thinks they live in a society that benefits the many is uninformed.

Re:Repeat after Me
We don't actually have a conservative party anymore. We have two crony capitalist parties with opposing views on a few social issues, to keep the masses from realizing they're really just fangirling over which set of rich people get richer.
Except there is no such thing as a non crony capitalist society, you guys are fed so much pro corproate propaganda you never check to see whether your society works as advertise. There has never been a time your government has worked for you, there was a brief moment after the great depression but after that, the rich got mad and went to claw back all working peoples gains and you all fell for it.

Re:Consolidation of the Production of Value
I too started feeling pitchforky when I read the summary. There is, in fact, a tremendous amount of psychopathic malfeasance at the top levels of the economy and government. But, we need to understand what's going on, in order to fairly and justly address it, in order to provide the greatest standard of living for the most people.
You should feel more pitchforky because the top is way out of sight.

A regulated market-based approach to education?
For good or bad, in the USA we live in a capitalist society with a (somewhat) free market. We can try to make the most of that because -- given appropriate regulation by the State and a fair distribution of purchasing power -- markets can work. See:
"Planning Through the Market: More Equality Through the Market System" by G. William Domhoff
https://whorulesamerica.ucsc.e...
"Most importantly for our purposes, markets can be reconstructed to make it possible to plan for a more egalitarian economic future. It turns out it is possible for strong governments to use the market system for planning. Once it is realized that markets can be viewed from a governmental point of view as administrative instruments for planning, it can be seen that with a little reconfiguring they can serve collective purposes as well as the individual consumer preferences trumpeted by conservative free market economists. In this form of planning, the information is supplied by the price system that is so central to the considerable, but far from perfect, efficiency brought about by markets. There is thus no need for one big planning apparatus. Instead, the planning tools within a reconstructed market system are simply taxes, subsidies, government purchases, and regulation. This point may seem very mundane, but these well-known government powers can be potent when applied to markets. ..."Just like there are some good cars out there out there (e.g. Toyota Camry) and bad cars (e.g. Ford Pinto), there are some good private schools out there which can be beneficial to specific families with specific needs and interests and there are also some bad private schools. Even the same school can be good or bad for a family depending on circumstances. For example for an overall good school (especially for families with kids who are a little extroverted), consider the Albany Free School:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...For parents who don't want to home educate (or otherwise can't do it for some reason), they could spend the $20k per child per year on private school instead. There would thus be a lot of money around to support alternative local private schools (like Montessori schools and child-directed Free schools as well as other types of schools). These schools would have to be very responsive to the needs of families in order to prosper given the potential for competition with all these other educational approaches and other private schools.
People choosing what they want to learn (and spending money on those choices) seems more compatible with a supposedly free-market capitalist society like the USA -- compared to what we have now with most young people being turned into standardized minds in government-owned "education" factories called schools (see my other comment on Prussian-inspired schools).
Local libraries might also be big beneficiaries from this shift. As John Taylor Gatto writes in "The Underground History of American Education", the "public" in public libraries means something very different than the "public" in public schools. Public libraries are inclusive institutions where you pick what you want to learn about on your own schedule and the librarian is not looking over your shoulder at everything you read. By contrast, public schools are only available to some people in the community (and exclude participation to everyone else) and, if you can enroll in them, are essentially mini surveillance states dictating what you learn and when you learn it (regardless of your individual needs or interests).
I's actually prefer a universal basic income over money spent just on families with children. But both of those solutions are in part about the same thing -- addressing a growing destructive rich-poor divide. Both capitalism and democracy can only function well when wealth is roughly evenly distributed across the society. Otherwise regulatory capture and

Re:Everything about this story is wrong
Meaning specifically this meadow?
Correct.
I'm somewhat confident some of the land around UCSC consists of some type of preserves.
Yes, the land around its land. It's bordered on one side by Pogonip, and on another side by Henry Cowell. Further, 410 acres of the campus itself are "protected natural lands". However, the campus totals 2,000 acres. A quick back of the envelope calculation
:) reveals that this leaves over 1,500 acres. They can't just go developing randomly though, because people will protest pretty much regardless of what they do. However, people will protest most strenuously if they try to cut down any redwood trees, so that's pretty much a non-starter.
UCSC has never literally promised not to build on the meadow, they only never previously put the meadow into their construction plans because it was not necessary. However, since they are not first and foremost an A&M or similar, they don't really need all that meadow space like Davis needs theirs. Last I checked, UCSC was known primarily for science, computing, and marine bio. There's a shortage of sea life in the meadow...

Perhaps you didn't notice, but the site you linked lists companies and individuals holding a state contractor's license. These are entities that are licensed by the state to provide services to the public, and shouldn't be confused with companies that have contracts with the state.

Re:Strawman Much?
Here you go: research and numbers. See Figure 4 for a graph of the actual, expected, and ideal proportionate wealth distributions as recorded by a survey of 5,522 Americans in a study done by Norton & Ariely (2010).
If you'd prefer that in words instead, here's a relevant excerpt:
Americans from all walks of life were also united in their vision of what the "ideal" wealth distribution would be, which may come as an even bigger surprise than their shared misinformation on the actual wealth distribution. They said that the ideal wealth distribution would be one in which the top 20% owned between 30 and 40 percent of the privately held wealth, which is a far cry from the 85 percent that the top 20% actually own. They also said that the bottom 40% -- that's 120 million Americans -- should have between 25% and 30%, not the mere 8% to 10% they thought this group had, and far above the 0.3% they actually had. In fact, there's no country in the world that has a wealth distribution close to what Americans think is ideal when it comes to fairness. So maybe Americans are much more egalitarian than most of them realize about each other, at least in principle and before the rat race begins.

Re:The sheer scale of it
A human has about 4 billion base pairs, which are roughly 2 bits each, so that is 500 MB. You could fit that on a CDROM with room to spare. But humans share 99% of their DNA, so you would really only need to store the diffs. 1% is 5 MB.
A copy of the (haploid) reference genome encoded as 2 bits per base pair comes in at about 800MB:
http://hgdownload.soe.ucsc.edu...
Run that through something like Z-zip and you can store it in less that 640MB, so it will indeed fit on a CD. Each of us has a diploid genome, though (a copy from each parent), so you really need to store double that if you take no account of the high level of similarity between both copies. If we assume a known reference genome, however, the 'diffs' are as you suggest very small - one paper reports compression down to 4MB, small enough to email:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pu...
Lots of analyses are done with lists of variants with respect to a reference genome, but the raw data generally comes from 'next generation sequencing' platforms, where every base needs to be sequenced many times over before bases can be called confidently, and quality scores of base calls need to be stored. The raw data usually needs to be kept since alignment and variant calling algorithms are improving all the time. Storage requirements are something like 80GB+ compressed.

Re:Considerations...
So what if the Earth is slightly lower in altitude of it's planar orbit around the sun? The northern hemisphere would be warmer, ice would melt. The southern hemisphere would experience the opposite, with the antarctic increasing in the accumulation of ice.
Yet I have seen very little research into this possibility that could pose a valid explanation for Earth's present climate changes.
There's been very little research into this possibility because it violates the laws of physics. You could not consistently orbit "slightly lower in altitude of [Earth's] planar orbit around the sun" without the near constant intervention of really, really large rockets.
Pick an orbital plane that you want to label as the "normal" one. Now shift the planet "below" the orbital plane due to, say, the combined gravitational pull of most of the other planets (September 2040 superalignment; y'all's days are numbered!). The problem is that the planet will still orbit the barycenter of the solar system, which also moves around slightly, but not much. The barycenter will "pull" the planet up. Thus means that, just like when you spin a tetherball in a flat plane and then push or hit the ball down, if the Earth were to descend "below" the normal plane, it would for half an orbit but pop up "above" the orbital plane for the other half. Blah blah blah, Earth gravity and air resistance to rotation of the ball make this a poor model, but at least it's within the realm of ordinary experience.
Guess what already causes the northern hemisphere to be warmer and the southern hemisphere to experience the opposite? The axial tilt of the Earth's rotation relative to its orbit. We call it winter and summer. It reverses every 6 months. can have subtle effects on the precise timing of certain transitions, but you're not going to escape the reversal of conditions every 6 months.

Re:Suzie can vote. Suzie can get a pitchfork.
"Paid for by the corporations through taxes because they put all of the people out of work."
Corporations simple pass any added taxes and costs on to the customer. Thus if you add taxes to a corporation they simple raise the price and pass that added expense on to the customer.
Except that it isn't true. Look, for example, at this discussion by conservative economist, and former Reagan adviser Bruce Bartlett.
Some key excerpts:
All economists reject that idea. They point out that prices are set by market forces and the suppliers of goods and services aren’t only C-corporations, which pay taxes on the corporate tax schedule, but also sole proprietorships, partnerships and S-corporations that are taxed under the individual income tax. Other suppliers include foreign corporations and nonprofits.
Therefore, corporations cannot raise prices to compensate for the corporate income tax because they will be undercut by businesses to which the tax does not apply. It should also be noted that the states have substantially different corporate tax regimes, including some that do not tax corporations at all, and we do not observe that prices for goods and services vary from state to state depending on its taxation of corporations.
In 1962, the University of Chicago economist Arnold C. Harberger, published an important article arguing that the corporate tax was borne entirely by shareholders. This was unquestionably true in the first instance; that is, when the corporate income tax was first imposed. The tax simply reduced corporate profits and had to come out of the pockets of shareholders, given that it could not be shifted onto consumers.
But as time went by, some economists argued that a substantial portion of the corporate income tax was ultimately paid by workers in the form of lower wages...
...The Treasury economists conclude that 82 percent of the corporate tax falls on capital and 18 percent on labor. This is very close to the methodology of the private Tax Policy Center, whose analyses are frequently cited in policy debates. It assumes that 80 percent of the corporate tax is borne by capital and 20 percent by labor.
So no, consumers do not pay that tax. Those with capital, the shareholders do, and to a small extent, eventually, workers. 70% of all shares are held by the top 5% of the population (by wealth) by the way, 42% by just the top 1%. But if productivity gains from automation are being passed on to workers (unlike what has happened since 1972) then their real wages will be rising anyway.

GeneTorrent
The Cancer Genomics Hub uses BitTorrent based software to distribute huge public domain data sets (multiple TB each) from DNA sequencing and related studies. BitTorrent is simply the most efficient way to distribute data on such a scale. This does get interesting when you are at a university which is under pressure from the RIAA to shut down BitTorrent, however. I had to spend way too much time working this all out with a firewall administrator.

I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested."[p. 10]

"The general public shoulders the bill [for war]. This bill renders a horrible accounting. Newly placed gravestones. Mangled bodies. Shattered minds. Broken hearts and homes. Economic instability. Depression and all its attendant miseries. Back-breaking taxation for generations and generations." [p. 24]General Butler is especially trenchant when he looks at post-war casualties. He writes with great emotion about the thousands of tramautized soldiers, many of who lose their minds and are penned like animals until they die, and he notes that in his time, returning veterans are three times more likely to die prematurely than those who stayed home.

"I'm disappointed that those brilliant minds would waste them violating the laws of their own country and attacking their own people."
You're under the dangerous illusion the government worked for you. The rich want to keep control over the masses, their politics and public opinion. They do that via control of information.
In his 1970 book Between Two Ages: America's Role in the Technetronic Era, Brzezinski wrote the following.
"The technetronic era involves the gradual appearance of a more controlled society. Such a society would be dominated by an elite, unrestrained by traditional values. Soon it will be possible to assert almost continuous surveillance over every citizen and maintain up-to-date complete files containing even the most personal information about the citizen. These files will be subject to instantaneous retrieval by the authorities."

Re:People who think economics is not a science...
"People who think economics is not a science usually have no understanding of economics."

So, no you just believe the propaganda, that's all economics is - propaganda for the masses. We can go back in time to when people lived in tribes, before such ideas and concepts were invented. That's the real world, aka just humans and nature. Everything else is a human invention. By reducing mankind (as a system) to its simplest state, we see the outgrowth of artificial structures as a result of one group of primates attacking another and forcefully imposing their culture upon them. AKA real science, to determine what is real and true you go back to the beginning before all these artificial structures were invented. Laws of nature don't need the NSA to protect them or former national security advisors worried about "radicals" and "heretics" (aka disbelievers in "economics").
Am I going to believe some podunk slashdot poster/puppet, or the former National security advisor of the United states?
The (mass surveillance) by the NSA/others and abuse by law enforcement is just more part and parcel of state suppression of dissent against corporate interests. They're worried that the more people are going to wake up and corporate centers like the US and canada may be among those who also awaken. See this vid with Zbigniew Brzezinski, former United States National Security Advisor.

The elite push behind this is...
... they fear us, that's why they are trying to lock down everything. They are trying to strip us of our rights and control us, via the payment and information channels we engage each other with because they are at their weakest.
