FYI: vgmusic.com's 16000+ midi files
Shameless plug of my website:
An alternative to SPC files are MIDI file recreations of the music. Its interesting to see how close they can get to the real sound.

The M.U.L.E. song
I'm a little young to be in on the joke. Is this that infamous song?

Re:Licensing issues
Nintendo does have every right to do as they please with their copyrighted work. So far they've either not noticed well-established places like OverClocked ReMix, VGMusic, or VGMix, or they've decided not to care, OR ideally, they welcome reinterpretations of their music. The music of Kong in Concert is non-commercial, free, and credited to Nintendo and the original composers (Robin Beanland, Eveline Fischer, and Dave Wise).
If imagining doomsday scenarios and ruminating over legalese is your thing, go for it :) We hope you're enjoying our fan service in the meantime. -
Re:Of course they'll only let you play..."Hey! Don't shoot ME!"
Still, for my money, the C64 game music was from Way of the Exploding Fist (although that midi file doesn't quite sound as cool as I remember; possibly because I'm not 12 now

Videogame Music Archive
Shameless self-promotion:
Google's #1 Link for "game music": the Videogame Music Archive
I founded the site in December 1996. Enjoy!
Super Mario Bros. Theme: Beep boop boop, boop boop boop boop, boop boop boop boop, boop boop, boooop, boop boop boom. The midi files are a lot more expressive. -
Re:Ignored earlier on?
For me, the SNES generation of music is the best by far. Final Fantasy 6, Super Mario World, Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, just for a few games...
By the way, here's an interesting essay I found a while back: Video game music: not just kid stuff -

niches? my site IS "game music"
Are niches really big news? My site, the Videogame Music Archive has dominated its own niche: "game music" for years. Its a nice feeling to know that your site can be found at the nexus of two words of the english language on Google.
:)
But on a more serious note, I think people need to get over the "get rich" and "fame" mentality and celebrate the topics they love.

I prefer the Final Fantasy 1 victory music
found here.

Final Fantasy Victory Fanfare
If you have a lazy imagination like I do, listen to the Final Fantasy 3 Victory Fanfare on the SNES page (search text for "Victory Fanfare") of the Videogame Music Archive.

Re:The Meta Turing Test
That is close to what I call the Newman Test (which I must admit comes from my last name, but also has an ironic twist in its title): A computer program must be able to adequately describe ASCII art images. A pseudo-ink blot test of sorts. See my article about one chat bot failing to pass this test as admisitered by another chat bot.
-
ascii art, duh
I've already shown that chat bots fail when asked to describe ascii art. It will be a while until they can pass this test reliably.

I already did this
ALICE vs ALICE seems pretty redundant. Its like asking you to talk to your clone. I previously did LeknorChat vs SmarterChild, where two differently developed chat bots talked to each other.
My purpose of doing this was to see if two such scripts would ever stop talking to each other, or would be a never ending conversation? They stopped, but please read to see why.
Also, interpreting ASCII art is the ultimate turning test. Also discussed on my page. -
I didn't know US law = International law
Implementing US Federal law against spam does little to solve an international problem.
The state laws are even worse (more laughable). For example, the state I live in, Connecticut, has an anti-spam law. One problem: it only applies to spam sent from an e-mail account based in Connecticut to another e-mail account based in Connecticut. My webserver/e-mail server is in Texas, so the law can't help me.
Remember, spam is pollution, and just because one nation/state outlaws it doesn't mean our mailboxes won't be flooded by others. The law won't help us in this case. What we need is a technological or economic solution, not a legal one.
I hate spam -
Spam = Pollution, and knows no boundaries
The good souls who fight spam on the Net should embrace the rule of law over the reign of code, and then turn their coding efforts toward assuring this law actually rules.
The "rule of law" though is limited by the jurisdiction of where the law applies. Unfortunately, spam is like pollution and knows no boundaries. We'll all have to wait for something along the lines of IRRITATE:
International
Ruling
Regarding
Inappropriate
Textual
Assemblages
Tainting
E-mail
For an overview of the spam problem, please see my paper. -
Let ME be your spam filter
I'm glad this article author touched on what I consider the ultimate solution:
If you hired someone to read your mail and discard the spam, they would have little trouble doing it.
There are lots of unemployed people in the tech sector, why not hire them? Heck, let ME be your spam filter!
Then again, there are privacy concerns. Oh well.
For an interesting read, please my paper: 'An Analytical Look at Spam'. I touch on the "Hire a secretary" solution along with an extensive analysis of the entire spam situation. -

Big launchSorry but this isn't new. Videogame Music has had almost 5 million hits (according to their counter) since 1996.
I wish I could get Slashdot to launch all of my web sites.

It's interesting watching chatterbots interact!
Actually, its pretty funny to see two chatterbots talk to each other. Check out my test at:
What Happens When Chat Bots Talk to Each Other
Here's the main idea:
<<<
A good friend of mine suggested to me that if two chat bots were engaged in a conversation with one another, they would end up talking forever. I was curious to find out if his theory was correct. At the time, I only knew one online chat bot (LeknorChat4) that could be instructed to contact and talk to another person through AOL Instant Messenger, and could not test the theory because I didn't have another bot to contact. But recently, I found out about another chat bot, SmarterChild, that works through AIM, and the following results were acquired.

Re:Best Music
Just realized that offsite linking to the vgmusic.com archives doesn't work, so click here and naviagte to NES music section. Journey to Silius is in the list.

Best Music
I think they missed one game for the Best Music category:
Journey to Silius.
Hold on while I find some links...
Stage 1
Stage 2
Stage 3
That music sounds almost exactly like the original unless you have a wavetabele soundcard like me :D
Try the NSF version at this link here and get a player from zophar's domain. You can also find a lot more NES music there: this is one of the most comprehensive archives of NSF's i've found.
Listen, and remember! :D -

Game music is goood!!Most people don't even consider it music, but I do. You don't believe it if you haven't tried, but you can download tons of game music from mp3.com or napster. Just try a few search for Final Fantasy, chrono trigger, super mario, metroid, zelda, etc.
Unfortunately, most of the napster stuff is copyrighted and only sold in Japan and from expensive import websites.
Here are a few good links to sites that sells game soundtracks:
Game Music Online
SoundtrackCentral
synSONIQ
I haven't bought anything yet, but I consider buying a few ablums from Game Music Online.
Before I knew about these sites or napster, I downloaded MANY game midi files from the web. Believe me, they sound great with SBlive! if you have the right soundfonts installed.
Videogame Music Acrhive - more than 10.000 midifiles I think, PC, SNES, NES, Genesis, Commodore 64 - you name it!.I'm glad to see people like Minibosses do some game music and make some of it free. Can't wait to here it (I'm a big fan of the Metroid soundtrack!).
