I recently took a 10,000 mile road trip around the States (soon to be chronicled on my journal) and seriously considered doing this. I even set up a profile and started contacting people but, in the end, the safety concerns kept we away. Now I don't believe that the world is as scary as the media portrays it, and I'm sure I missed out on meeting some great people and learning more about the local areas (Not to mention saving £1,000) but in the end, I just couldn't feel secure knowing I was going to some random house at the end of the night.

Be Lucky and Pick the Right Job
Hey Anonymous Questioner,
I'm the guy who asked the 'if not America, then where' question a week or so ago on slashdot, so I thought I'd throw in my own example. The first half was luck of birth. When I was looking in to possibly living abroad, I discovered that I qualified for an Irish passport due to my ancestry. So if you want to work in another country, I'd check the citizenship laws and trawl through your family tree to see if you have any useful connections.
Secondly, I picked an occupation with a critical shortage: physics teachers. If you seriously want to live and work abroad anywhere in the world, I cannot recommend a better job. Every week I see loads of ads for science teachers to work abroad, and I've even received a few job offers from schools (in China for example) through my journal.
So check that family tree, pick a job with a shortage and get out into the world. It was the best decision I ever made.

Re:academics and wikipedia
just because you won't get a citation or a CV bullet point out of it doesn't mean it's completely worthless to you.
Oh

Oh yeah? Well, I'm calling for Congressman Markey's arrest. Who's with me?

Re:green power

Yes safety first! I do so hate it when the office hydrangea goes on a rampage and kills the interns.

Wiki-based script creation
I don't doubt that you could get an OK or even good script by committee, but I think to get a great movie, you need one mind unhindered by others. (But you also get A LOT more junk that way)

Re:It's obviously the best solution
It's obviously best to simply give up and leave, rather than actually stand up and do something about changing your country.
Leaving is a form of voting with one's feet.
-Grey
P.S. You do realize that American can still vote overseas, don't you? We damn well better be able to, since we still have to pay U.S. taxes. -
Re:Changes
Whoops, I'm a moron. Didn't see the link because it wasn't in a second paragraph that I had. Apologies to our Editor Overlords.

Changes
It's always interesting to see how the Slashdot Editors modify story submissions. In this case they left out my link to a boing boing story that might be useful for those trying to get out of America. What's the matter guys? Do you think of boing boing as a rival?

Wow! The third firefox 2.0 article in 24 hours. Boy, I can't wait to read all the insightful comments people will leave. Again.

Re:backwards
So you're implying better decisions are made by those who aren't concerned enough about the outcome to be (in my words) "serious" or (in your words) "crazy [and] single-minded"? Hmm. So if I decide how your income is spent, and vice versa, we'll both be better off? Interesting logic
No, those who aren't concerned won't show up to vote. Crawling over a hundred yards of broken glass would bring out the crazy.

Re:ffs
Stop using the Enlightenment icon for unrelated stories, kdawson. I don't think it means what you think it means.
What's the problem? Do you expect there to be a sudden rush of Enlightenment news and developments that you don't want his story to get confused with?
-Grey -
Re:backwards
I say make it much harder to vote. Make people crawl a hundred yards over broken glass on Sunday night at 4 AM in a driving rainstorm to vote. Then only those of us really fucking serious about the whole business will be making the decisions.
Yes, I've often thought we really should limit voters to the crazy, single-minded subset of the population.

One cannot help but get the impression that changes from this point forward will resemble consecutive versions of the Windows OS -- more a honing than transformation.

BY-NC
How do you define
... non-commercial use in this context?
This is the question I've always had with creative commons: just what counts as non-commercial? If I take a BY-NC image off flickr, and want to use it in my blog, is that OK? What if I have google ads on my blog? Is that still OK? Does it make any difference if I'm actually making a profit or not? I've gone so far as to email some of the CC lawyers about this issue, and there seems to be no clear answer.

"Don't ask why, that's just how it is." Imagine if you told your kids that.
You've obviously never been a parent or a teacher.

Huh?
Like the current TV and radio license fees, the money will support national and local public TV and radio stations.
Shouldn't the money go to supporting internet related media, like podcasts? If I don't have a TV, why should I be forced to pay taxes that support it?

Shouldn't the boy scouts decide what their badges are? This is like McD's making the health curriculum for a school.

Putting the fair use argument aside for a moment, who thinks it's a good idea to reward people for what they should be doing anyway. Should I expect to be rewarded because I didn't shoplift today or commit murder?

Can I get a merit badge for not being a boy scout?

Real Emotional State: Depressed and soul crushed.

t seemed to indicate it was more related to customer contact things where the customer is calling about their service, and getting frustrated with the voicemail maze
So will they have the system minimize frustration or maximize it to get you off the phone faster?

Re:Different "intelligences"
The standard breakdown is something like: * Linguistic intelligence * Logical-mathematical intelligence * Spatial intelligence * Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence * Musical intelligence * Interpersonal intelligence * Intrapersonal intelligence * Naturalist intelligence
Intelligence, you keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

The Science of eBay
I don't know about anyone else, but I've about had it with eBay. It hasn't improved in the last five years and they slowly nickle and dime you to death. I'd love an article on The Science of Leaving eBay: ten reasonable alternatives.

Backlog
Under the new approach, page edits will no longer be immediately applied to pages but will instead have to be approved by an administrator before they become visible. Vandalism or changes which are not approved will not appear.
With the thousands of edits that happen on wikipedia per second, I don't see how this change will do anything but create an impossible backlog.

Problems with the internet
Rules like this are clearly written by those who do not understand the internet well. What counts as 'possession' on the 'net? If I save a picture to my hard drive, that I would say is clearly possession, but what if I'm just looking at it on the originating website? It's clearly on my computer (in RAM) but is that possession?

Just how much and how long is it to travel from London to New York by ship these days? It's looking like a more and more attractive option these days with all the pain-in-the-ass travel restrictions.

Re:Moral bankruptcy
Two hundred innocent people are killed and people are worried that future events like these might cause an IT outage?
That's not moral bankruptcy as you claim, it's people worrying about what will affect them more. Lot's of people die every day for lots of reasons -- it's not our moral responsibility to worry for each and every one of them.

Why do we always outsource to places that are stuck in eternal struggles.
The people there are cheaper because they are in eternal struggle.

Re:Do you really need MS Office?

Re:People buy more than they need this way
My appartment has one bed, 3 chairs (a gift, I didn't buy those,) a notebook computer, an old filing cabinet (another gift,) a couple of kettles, a frying pan, a steaming pot, some drinking glasses, an oscilloscope, a 3 way power transformer, a digital CPU programmer, an unfinished 3D printer, a few small tools, a VEX robot set with some addons, some clothing, a vacuum cleaner and a few normal household appliences (washer/dryer/fridge/stove/microwave oven/dishwasher.) That is it.
Must. Restrain myself. From making. Lack of girlfriend joke. Arrgh!

Boinc
I use Boinc, which lets me divide my time between a bunch of projects. I give about 99% of the time to medical research and 1% to SETI. I think of SETI as the lottery: it's fun to play, inspiring and would change my life if I won, but it's not worth spending a lot of time on. I spend just enough to be in the game.

Stop passing the buck
Let's put the blame where it belongs: I have less close friends because I spend too much time on the internet. It's not like the internet's fault, it's mine for taking the easy option.
