Re:Bullshit.
Pretty much every nutritionist I know believe religiously in the food pyramid. By an enormous factor they have bought in to the far terrible, meat bad, grains good cute of the world.
They are also hardly ever scientists. In fact most nutritionist qualifications involve exactly zero science or medical training.. Because it is not a damn science, it is a job title, more closely related to marketig, and not unlike economics.
Go talk to a research human biologist some time. Suggest a nutritionist is a scientist to them, then listen.. You may learn something.
So no. You are talking bullshit. They are very involved in this, and have made a ton of money out of people's misery.
I see. Well, you need take it up with Luise Light, a nutritional expert, who made recommendations based upon valid food science from the 1980's and who was overruled in the 1992 to make the 1992 pyramid conform to the demands of the Secretary of Agriculture and the food industry. Here is her text "A Fatally Flawed Food Guide". http://www.whale.to/a/light.ht... [whale.to]
Go tell her what nutritionists believe in.

Re:This is why average people no longer trust scie
> Nutritionists, the real scientists in this field, have not wavered from the idea of the balanced diet. While adjustments have been made, the basics of what makes for good nutrition have not.
So Mulligan's Stew being replaced with that obviously and highly unbalanced "food pyramid" must have just been my imagination then.
Watch where this goes. People with pecuniary interests have long held sway over things that are purported as science. And sometimes people step outside their boundaries when presumably conducting science Ancel Keys was the main perpetrator of the idea that eating fat was bad for you. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... He for lack of a better term, fudged data. Keys had gained some credit with one of his first books, The Biology of Human Starvation, published in 1950. It was pretty creepy, but based on the idea that the post World War 2 global situation was going to have a lot of people starving, and finding the best way to rehabilitate them.
Then we move onto Key's Seven Countries Experiment. This turned out to be a flawed study, in which Keys "found" a correlation between fat intake and coronary disease.
But there were problems. Keys had 21 countries with data too look at. He selected 6. When all of the different countries data was analyzed any correlation was much less clear.
Many other scientists at the time were very much in disagreement with Keys conclusion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
While you might find this confirms your dislike of science, hold on a moment.
How does this conclusion turn into some sort of food pyramid dogma? Enter politicians, the pecuniary interests that are own the politicians and some other odd bedfellows that show up.
Just so we know where we were, here is a nice version of the 1992 food pyramid. http://growmap.com/usda-food-p...
Luise Light who was a nutritional expert, made recommendations based upon valid food science from the 1980's and who was overruled in the 1992 to make the 1992 pyramid conform to the demands of the Secretary of Agriculture and the food industry. Here is her text "A fatally Fflawed Food Guide". http://www.whale.to/a/light.ht...
So when policy, not science dictates what is healthy for you, you can hate the scientists all you like. But when the Scientists are not making the decisions, and politicians and their owners are cherry picking what they decide is allowable based on profit, well you can kill every scientist, create a national "No more Scientists holiday", and the problem will still exist. You'll just have to find another group to blame.
Regardless, we should just have a vote on what is healthy or not. That will fix the problem. It won't be easy though - Congress tried to repeal Ohm's law, but it was met with some resistance.

Re:Lifestyle disease
When I read the reports I *never* got the idea that they were recommending refined flours, sugar, or other similar sources of sugar or starch. The closest I can come is a recommendation for baked potatoes...which is still sort of valid, though now we (or at least I) worry more about the starch.
Here's a story from Luise Light, who was a leading nutritionist at the USDA when the "Food Pyramid" was originally adopted. After the nutritionists submitted their recommended guidelines to the Secretary of Agriculture, here's what happened:
When our version of the Food Guide came back to us revised, we were shocked to find that it was vastly different from the one we had developed. As I later discovered, the wholesale changes made to the guide by the Office of the Secretary of Agriculture were calculated to win the acceptance of the food industry. For instance, the Ag Secretaryâ(TM)s office altered wording to emphasize processed foods over fresh and whole foods, to downplay lean meats and low-fat dairy choices because the meat and milk lobbies believed itâ(TM)d hurt sales of full-fat products; it also hugely increased the servings of wheat and other grains to make the wheat growers happy. The meat lobby got the final word on the color of the saturated fat/cholesterol guideline which was changed from red to purple because meat producers worried that using red to signify âoebadâ fat would be linked to red meat in consumersâ(TM) minds.
Where we, the USDA nutritionists, called for a base of 5-9 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables a day, it was replaced with a paltry 2-3 servings (changed to 5-7 servings a couple of years later because an anti-cancer campaign by another government agency, the National Cancer Institute, forced the USDA to adopt the higher standard). Our recommendation of 3-4 daily servings of whole-grain breads and cereals was changed to a whopping 6-11 servings forming the base of the Food Pyramid as a concession to the processed wheat and corn industries. Moreover, my nutritionist group had placed baked goods made with white flour â" including crackers, sweets and other low-nutrient foods laden with sugars and fats â" at the peak of the pyramid, recommending that they be eaten sparingly. To our alarm, in the âoerevisedâ Food Guide, they were now made part of the Pyramidâ(TM)s base.
Light's account of this has appeared elsewhere in lots of sources. Although we probably can't verify every one of her personal memories, it seems clear that the nutritional guidelines WERE deliberately altered to emphasize processed foods, including starches and sugars... granted, part of the alternations weren't really about encouragement, but rather removing warnings against them. But still -- it's pretty much "smoking gun" evidence against what you said.
(BTW -- apologies for the all the crappy characters showing up. I used to edit stuff I pasted in to conform to Slashdot's archaic encoding standards... but since they are now barraging me with invasive ads, I can't be bothered to respect this site anymore and will likely be leaving permanently anyway...)

Re: And the next food craze starts
Since when have nutritionists pushed starch?
First off, the parent post didn't say "nutritionists push starch" -- the post referred to SPECIAL INTERESTS. And the post you're responding to specifically cited the food pyramid, which was endorsed by the U.S. government and nutritionists. The base of that pyramid (i.e., the largest portion of daily food intake) was "Bread, Cereal, Rice and Pasta."
This is what one of the leading nutritionists at the USDA said later about what happened in the 1980s:
When our version of the Food Guide came back to us revised, we were shocked to find that it was vastly different from the one we had developed. As I later discovered, the wholesale changes made to the guide by the Office of the Secretary of Agriculture were calculated to win the acceptance of the food industry. Normally I'm not a believer in "conspiracy theories," but here we have the story told by a former director of nutrition at the USDA. To my knowledge, no one has come out to contradict her account in the years since she made those claims.

Duke Nukem Forever Young
Because I like you guys, I'm gonna do you a solid and save you all kinds of tsuris later on. There will not be self-driving cars in any of our lifetimes. Yes, we will have something like super cruise control and driver assist, but no, you will never be able to call for your robot Uber to pick you up and drive you to your part-time job. It's just not going to happen. And finally, the people who know most about "driverless" cars are starting to come clean:
The most realistic industry projection about the arrival of autonomous driving comes from the company that’s done the most to make it possible. Google, while never explicitly saying so, has long intimated that self-driving cars would be available by the end of the decade.
In February, though, a Google car caused its first accident; a bus collision with no injuries. A few weeks later, Google made a significant, if little-noted, schedule adjustment. Chris Urmson, the project director, said in a presentation that the fully featured, truly go-anywhere self-driving car that Google has promised might not be available for 30 years, though other much less capable models might arrive sooner.
Historians of technology know that “in 30 years” often ends up being “never.” Even if that’s not the case here, if you’re expecting a self-driving car, you should also expect a wait. And so you might want to do something to pass the time. Maybe go for a nice drive?
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07...
Yes, you read that right. The project director for "self-driving cars" at Google just added 25 more years to his projection on when you're going to see them. And as the writer points out, most of us know that any tech prediction for 30 years down the road always ends in tears. If you go back 30 years, they were predicting tech that never showed up and mostly totally missed on the most important tech advances that did show up.
Now I don't have a particular interest one way or the other regarding self-driving cars, except this: I don't want to see one dollar in public funds spent to develop this technology or to create infrastructure for a self-driving fleet until we've made actual public transportation affordable and viable, the way it was early to middle last century before Standard Oil and GM conspired to destroy public transportation in the United States (and yes, they were even convicted of doing so in court). So go ahead, Google and Elon and Tim Cook and all the visionaries. Make your self-driving golf carts all you want. Just don't ask for a dollar of taxpayer money, especially not until you start paying your taxes.

Re:So?
Nuclear plants periodically dump radioactive Tritium and other isotopes into the atmosphere and water supplies, another is the significant release radioactive isotopes each time the reactor is depressurized to refuel it. This has a known impact on health of the surrounding communities, even the NRC admits to this fact.
Nuclear reactors are toxic to surrounding areas, and Infant mortality rates drop around five US nuclear power reactors after reactors closed . Thus, it appears that the NRC significantly low-balled the numbers.
And this is just normal reactor operation, when(not if) a reactor melts down, ten's of million's residing downwind will have negative health consequences.

Re:Don't crucify the FDA. They came out long ago..
Are you kidding me? Did you read where that came from? It's reposted from Mercola.com. The guy is a anti-vaxx quack with a minor history of battling with the fda. Not only that, but those extra regulations on supplements threaten his livelihood.
Does any of that mean that the FDA is perfect? No. The structure of the FDA is retarded. They require a whole series of clinical trials, have the evidence presented to their advisory team (composed of actual scientist and medical professionals) who make a recommendation, then a group of people (who have no legal requirement to know ANYTHING about medicine) vote on whether to approve the drug or not. That's how you end up with stupid garbage like Aricept 23mg getting regulatory approval (Over 2x the side effects with almost negligible gain on Mini Metal Status Exam compared to the 10mg dose? Yay! Put Grandpa on it today!)
The FDA is also only allowed to look at safety and efficacy data. They can't deny something on the basis of utility. Companies like this one make a killing on it. I'm not aware of a single novel medication that company makes. All they do is take stuff that has been on the market for decades, make it a gel instead of a cream or combine two products (so convenient), sell it for 10 or 20 times the generic price, and send an army of sales reps to convince gullible dermatologists to prescribe their products.
It would be crazy if it weren't true. There are some serious problems with the FDA that need to resolved. The ability to assess whether something is safe/effective or not is not one of them. The testing process is sound. The requirement to listen to the people who CAN assess the results, however, needs to be changed. Just for crying out loud, don't use Mercola as a source. His scientific reasoning ability is clearly questionable.

Re:Shocking...
I would guess that the source is an anti-vaccination site.
I found this dissection of his first quote, when I searched for "Dr. Bernard Greenberg". Basically, the good doctor appears to have been most concerned with how the media was overstating the effectiveness of the vaccine.
The other two quotes may be real as well, but both come from anti-vaccination campaigns, so while the quotes may be real, they are less likely to be truthful.

Re:Why do people listen to her?
The risks of polio are highly exaggerated. Most people (95+%) are naturally immune and when they contract it suffer it no differently than a common cold. Of the remaining 5%, in most cases paralysis is both usually only partial and temporary, and experience a full recovery. The rate of polio was already declining in the years preceding the polio vaccine introduction (likely due to the then-rapidly-improving hygiene and sanitation practices). When the vaccine was introduced, the rate of decline actually *decreased*--because being a live vaccine it was causing new cases. In addition, important to note, when they introduced it they also changed their reporting criteria such that it would show favor to the effectiveness of the vaccine. Jonas Salk admitted that when you administer the vaccine you're rolling the dice.
Most of this anti-vaccine stuff is centered around MMR. There are other vaccines, namely the DPT, which *has* been shown to have a direct correlation to SIDS (aka cot death) in many studies. For example, when Japan changed their DPT schedule by 6 months, the incidents of SIDS shifted by 6 months, tracking it exactly. One study out of Australia which developed a non-invasive infant breathing monitor found that in nearly all cases, 10-14 days after the DPT vaccine is administered infants experience episodes of severe breathing difficulty during sleep--severe enough that respiratory failure can occur in a significant portion.
So, just because there is no correlation between the MMR vaccine and autism there are other possible, and even common adverse affects occurring.

Agreed. How about ADVAPI.DLL ? (I'm joking)) who knows what code the NSA has asked them include in that driver ? (NSA talking to NEC (or some other chip fab): Include our binary blob in you binary blob or we will fuck you up m'kay ?) Now how do you feel about running your 'binary blob' driver in linux ?

Maybe you should reconsider doing what you hate?
If you'd just bother to read the page you linked for reference, you'd see this:
Since the mid1990s, Monsanto indicates that it has filed suit against 145 individual U.S. farmers for patent infringement and/or breach of contract in connection with its genetically engineered seed but has proceeded through trial against only eleven farmers, all of which it won.[131] The Center for Food Safety has listed 112 lawsuits by Monsanto against farmers for claims of seed patent violations.[132] The usual claim involves violation of a technology agreement that prohibits farmers from saving seed from one season's crop to plant the next. One farmer received an eight-month prison sentence for conspiracy to commit fraud during litigation with Monsanto[133] in addition to having to pay damages.[134]
Monsanto sued the Pilot Grove Cooperative Elevator in Pilot Grove, Missouri, on the grounds that by cleaning harvested seeds covered by Monsanto's patents so that farmers could replant them, the elevator was inducing them to infringe Monsanto's patents. The Pilot Grove Cooperative Elevator had been cleaning conventional seeds for decades before the development of genetic engineering and developments in patent law led to the existence of issued patents that cover seeds.[135]
In one case in 2002, Monsanto mistakenly sued Gary Rinehart of Eagleville, Missouri for patent violation. Rinehart was not a farmer or seed dealer, but sharecropped land with his brother and nephew, who were violating the patent. Monsanto dropped the lawsuit against him when it discovered the mistake.[135]
If you'd truly like to know more, you can start on these different themes about Monsanto and RoundUp:
Killing 90% of amphibians
Wiping out bee colonies
Killing thousands of farmers
Causing widespready obesity diseasesI'm sure this is just the tip of the iceberg. They will suck the planet and humanity dry, and vanish like a puff of smoke when everything collapses due to their greed and harmful actions. Make no mistake, Monsanto and the owners behind it will do everything in their effort to prevent being held accountable. Company accountability is almost non-existant by law anyway. So to expect anything better than amoral sociopathic behaviour from corporations is foolish, naive at best.

I don't have a healthy fear of pertussis because the general improvement in hygiene and medical care in the early half of the 20th century--even prior to the widespread use of the pertussis vaccine--dropped the mortality rate and rate of significant adverse effect of the disease significantly. The vaccine helps keep the infection rate down, which is good, but not nearly as heroically life-saving as many care to think. (For pertussis. Other diseases vary.)
As for the notion of wiping out the human-communicable pertussis strains, I have been corrected. I relied too much on someone else's post in here that turned out to be incorrect. Sorry. That remains a valuable goal, and one that is making me re-evaluate the cost-benefit that I have spoken of elsewhere on this thread. -

Re:GoodI posted links to the Lancet article elsewhere in the thread, which brings up not just Guillain-Barre, but also MS, as well as the problems with hepatitis and cancer vaccines. There's also tons of stuff out there on animals (too-frequent rabies vaccines and arthritis)
but even a quick search turns up stuff like this vis. type 1 diabetes (an auto-immune disorder) and several vaccines:
Childhood Vaccinations and Juvenile-Onset (Type-1) Diabetes
by Harris Coulter, Ph.D.[snip]
1. The Pertussis Vaccine The vaccine for pertussis, or whooping cough, is part of the DPT shot (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus) given to all children. The pertussis vaccine includes "pertussis toxin," a toxin secreted by the microbe which causes whooping cough (the Bordetella pertussis). This toxin, which has been described as one of the most virulent poisons known to science, has several names and has a variety of effects on the body. Pertussis Toxin Affects Pancreas - One of the names for pertussis toxin has traditionally been "islet-activating protein," signifying that this substance acts specifically and directly on the "islets of Langerhans," which are the insulin-secreting parts of the pancreas. (9) At least since the 1970s, pertussis vaccine has been known in animal experiments to stimulate over-production of insulin by the pancreas followed by exhaustion and destruction of the "islets" with consequent under-production of insulin; in the first case the outcome is hypoglycemia, and in the latter it is diabetes. (10) Physicians as early as 1949 called attention to low blood glucose in children who had severe reactions to the pertussis vaccine. (11) In 1970, Margaret Pittman wrote: "the infant whose blood sugar level is influenced by food intake may be especially vulnerable to vaccine-induced hypglycemia...the vaccine induces hypoglycemia in mice and rabbits." Gordon Stewart wrote in 1977: "more than any other vaccine in common use, pertussis vaccine is known pharmacologically to provoke...hypoglycemia due to increase production of insulin." Two Dutch researchers, Hannik and Cohen, observed in 1978: "infants who show serious reactions following pertussis vaccination suffer from a failure to maintain glucose homeostasis." And two German researchers, Hennessen and Quast, found in 1979 that 59 out of 149 children who manifested adverse reactions to the pertussis vaccine developed symptoms of hypoglycemia. (12) The next logical step - deciding that the whooping cough vaccine could be responsible for the presently observed increase in the incidence of hypoglycemia and diabetes - has been inhibited by the federal government's pro-vaccination policy, but enough researchers have spoken out in favor of a diabetes connection to suggest that this is a very real possibility deserving of further investigation.
II. The Measles-Mumps-Rubella Vaccine The MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, especially its mumps and rubella components, has been especially implicated in the causation of Type-I diabetes.
A. Rubella and the Rubella Vaccine Of the three vaccines making up the MMR shot, the rubella component is the major suspect because rubella (German measles) itself, like mumps, is known to be a cause of diabetes and the action of the vaccine resembles that of the disease. If the disease can cause diabetes, so can the vaccine. Let us first look at the disease.
Rubella Virus Causes Diabetes - In 1978 Margaret Menser wrote: "Since 1968 there has been increasing interest in the possibility that viral infection may play a part in the etiology of diabetes mellitus in man...[but] only one virus consistently produces diabetes in man - the congenitally acquired rubella virus." (13) "Congenital rubella syndrome" is the name given to the group of impairments and disabilities often seen in babies whose mothers become infected with rubella during pregnancy. These impairments include: heart disease, mental retardation, deafness, and blindness.

Re:Give me a break there, will ya?Your answers and reactions are as expected. Well, just wanted to see if there are some informed people here, but oh well.. letting my original post stay there with no references and answers to your reactions would be quite dumb, so here it goes.

The reason the 1918 flu had high mortality among young adults is because sometimes when the body is presented with a new and particularly severe infection, there occurs a "cytokine storm", a positive feedback loop of the immune system which can pretty much destroy you. A healthy immune system becomes a liability. That's speculative. Not even the official medical community states this as fact.
There is an article on this at http://www.whale.to/vaccine/sf1.html with some more detail.Americano
I'm going to simply respond to your rambling, seemingly paranoid post with a single [Citation Needed].
Paranoid conspiracy theories require some verifiable proof, especially when they directly contradict peer-reviewed and verified science so conspicuously.I'm on it, as you see.

I can't understand why the tin foil hat people think vaccines are a scam to make insane amounts of cash by the pharmaceuticals industry.Because it is so? Here is an article on the profit motivation part and the documented actions of the pharmacy industry to increase profits (bribes) http://www.naturalnews.com/024114.html Note: this one has a surprisingly mainstream origin.
The reality is the last thing the industry wants is a cure for a disease. What they want is a drug that treats without curing, and has to be taken indefinitely. Something like Prozac, statin drugs, Viagra - that's where the money is.
Thats something I fully agree with.

Explain Smallpox, Polio, Hepatitis B, HPV, Chicken Pox, Measles, Mumps, and Rubella. It is not futile. You do it, or you risk dying from easily communicable diseases.
You're an idiot parroting "Vaccines are poison!" crap, who told you this, Jenny McCarthy?
Predjudice? No, that requires knowing nothing about you and making a rash judgment. You've plainly proved you're ignorant and little better than a wishful-thinking conspiracy theorist and deserve every flame fired against your dangerous spreading of mis-information.Ok, granted, you have no prejudice. You have religion.

In brief: please provide links for your paranoid delusions, I'd enjoy the read.
The flu variant believed to be responsible for the 1918 pandemic killed by causing a cytokine storm (wiki it yourself) - the host immune system overreacts and kills the host. Of course this is most effective against otherwise healthy people with a strong immune system that can really kick some ass... against their own body.Thats a long comment of you. I did wiki cytokine storm and even there they write statements with "it is believed". No conclusive evidence. But yea, it's wiki, so lets leave it at that.
You suggest that the pharmaceutical industry has duped the entire medical profession into believing in a disease that doesn't even exist, and will inject the entire population with a potentially lethal disease causing agent, causing massive global economic collapse simply because they can get paid for every unit they produce? No comment.
Probably yes.

...Get some manners, dude.
Now to elaborate some of the other points. Interestingly nobody asked what ingredients vaccines have, as I was hinting. There is quite a good description at -
Re:I'd be impressed...
Yup, it is genocide that turns a profit. See here for some US death rates resulting from the health "care" system. The roughly 106.000 yearly deaths because of adverse drug reactions is a statistic that hides a much larger iceberg of deaths indirectly caused by drugs.
You see, the trick is to not kill people outright: you cannot make money off dead people. Instead, you design drugs that cause chronic disease (e.g. Zyprexa which causes diabetes), and market them to the general public, e.g. as a lifestyle drug, so as to get many people to ask their doctor for a prescription. That way you profoundly grow the market for selling further drugs and treatments. Any litigation you can always settle for a fraction of the profit later.
