Re:Well, duh
Inhouse software can be that bad, but it's actually possible to find and berate the developer. With vertical market software of the variety I'm shuddering at the memory of, you've paid good money for this abuse so it's got to be the finest and best-assembled abuse available. Besides, you're suffering it, not your boss.
I move that we rename vertical market proprietary software as "sadismware".

Re:So show us.
Of course, that doesn't top Torchic. A front page featured article with 20 paragraphs and 46 citations now reduced to redirecting to a list of pokemon, with 2-3 paragraphs (depending on whether or not a one sentence paragraph counts) and no citations.
Critics of pokemon articles often say "it's insane that there are articles on every single pokemon but not on {some random subject}". Wikipedians used to, properly, redirect such critics to be bold - if you don't like the coverage of some random subject, expand on that subject, yourself, instead of trying to destroy other peoples hard work. Now, all wikipedia ever does is cave to critics proposing deletion.
I hope you see this reply, but from one AC to another, here's your answer: Wikia's for-profit Pokemon wiki
Jimmy Wales wants to make some green.

Re:Alien?
Actually, is it me or does it kind of look like the queen mother from the Aliens movie? Argh.
Well, to me it looked more like the final phase of Metroid Prime. Except, um, longer tentacles and floating in water, not air.

Re:no
Spore and GTA IV are not multiplayer games
Sort of wrong on the first one (more of a community-based DLC), definitely wrong on the second.
How DRM affects Spore in terms of "getting online" I don't know, the game holds no interest for me. DRM preventing people from playing online multiplayer in GTA IV (legitimately OR illegitimately) will cause some consternation, I guarantee. I don't play online multiplayer in those kinds of games (getting virtually teabagged and having homophobic profanity hurled at me by 12 year olds just isn't my thing), but I know it's a pretty big component for many people. -
Re:Brings About a Smile
It's great someone actually did this. I've seen that idea at MENSA Entrance Test on Uncyclopedia, with the challange there juuuust a bit more difficult, and I loved it.

Re:Ethical vs Moral
It appears that language has evolved (or rather devolved) once again. I looked it up last year and "ethics" and "morals" were two separate things; ethics was a code of conduct ("It is unethical for a govenmnet employee to accept a gift of over $n, it is unethical for a medical doctor to discuss a patient's health with anyone unauthorized).
The new Miriam Webster seems to make no distinction.
As to Wikipedia, it is not an acceptable resource for defining the meanings of words. Looking to wikipedia when a dictionary is better suited is a waste of energy.
Wikipedia's entry on cataract surgery still has no mention of acommodating lenses. Any time someone adds the CrystaLens to wikipedia, somebody edits it out. Too newfangled for wikipedia I guess, they only just came out five years ago (there's one in my eye right now).
Morality may have gone out of style, but as it's needed they apparently brought it back under a more secular name. So now that "ethical" now means what "moral" used to mean, what word can we use for what used to be "ethics", such as the aformentioned doctor breaking HIPPA rules (ethics) which would not be immoral or unethical for me to do?
Of course uncyclopedia has no ethics, but it does have morals, virtue, and medical malpractice.

Re:Crap, I just learned the words...
Gardan's Steelyard is not so much a new idea as a reframing of Occam's Razor. Most of the ideas in the book come from elsewhere, Stephenson's genius is in weaving them so well into the plot of his story. You can read what he has to say about the ideas in the story at the book's acknowledgements page.

So Rotten Ronnies lawyered up, eh?
McDonald's still makes crappy food no matter how many patents they apply for.
As Mad Magazine said in the 1970's "MMMM" or McDonald's Makes Messy Meals.
P.S. Big Mac secret sauce is really Thousand Island Dressing, but they still patented it anyway as a trade secret.

Re:I went to a reading here in Berlin
At the reading here in Seattle he basically called it a big book about big books. Which has me wondering... how are there people interested in reading this book who are not ready to learn a few new words?
Anyway, it wasn't the words that irritated me. It's that I know about ten times as much about the history of Arbre's philosophy as I know about Earth's. Lucky for me, there are quick references to be found: http://anathem.wikia.com/wiki/Arbre-Earth_Connections
I think I'll print this off and attach it to the back as an additional reference for when I re-read this some day. -

"And they were quite necessary, because they described something unique, not some equivalents of Earth's everyday stuff."
Having not read Anthem yet, I can't say whether this is the case or no. Can you?

Re:Halfway through the book, and ...
I found the first quarter of the book a little slow...but after that, I couldn't read it fast enough to keep up. I obsessed about the book and ended up getting the audio book as well so I could listen to it in the car to and from work!
It is an epic book, and it is a memetic masterpiece, since many people are big fans of this book have slowly been infiltrating it's words into the english language...

It was built in space...
Hey, I'm excited about the new movie and I don't really care about canon and all that (it's hard to as an Anime fan) but I'm pretty sure that the Enterprise was built in space...
And you are correct, ships are not built in the water - but they are generally built in a dry dock that can then just be flooded, rather then being built somewhere on shore and then shipped to a dock to be launched. I thought that the atmospheric capabilities of the Voyager were a big part of what made that ship unique - I don't think the Enterprise's were designed to be able to land on a planet (and then take off again). -

Re:Birds of a...
You should have offered a link to explain to everyone who Mitch Bainwol is.
Mitch Bainwol (or, as he is known is his native tounge, Bitch Mainwol, son of Mog'var the Destroyer) is a demon from hell and the current overlord of the Recording Industry Assholes of America, or RIAA. He is well known for his ability to breathe fire and is the arch-nemesis of freedom. It is said that if you stand in front of a mirror in pitch black with only a lit candle as a source of light, and sing any song three times, that Bitch Mainwol will come out of the mirror and sue you for every penny you're worth.
Yes, that link was to the uncyclopedia.
Little known fact: Lori Drew is Nancy Drew's illigitimate daughter, born under a bridge in Liverpool.

I dunno. Ranged weapons seemed to be pretty effective against Jedi not equipped with character shields... err I mean, not as well versed in the force

Not too funny.
The Protesters themselves have made their statement. The important parts are:
- Organizers concealed Novell sponsorship, so that people would associate the event with legitimate free software organizations and then mistake Novell for a backer of free software instead of a M$ puppet.
- Protests against Novell had to be rush planned on the first day of the event because of the organizer's treachery.
- Protests were entirely peaceful and non disruptive, banners, posters and fliers.
- Novell disrupted the event by inciting ignorant Student Union and University staff to harshly attack the peaceful protesters.
The organizers of the event and university staff should be deeply ashamed of their actions. We can only hope that no one was injured and that no one is now threatened with unjust charges, jail time or fines. The University and police were used as tools by Novell and M$. If they learn their lesson those companies will no longer be welcome on campus or in the state.
For all of that, Novell would have been better off providing the protesters with a booth. The truth has come out and it is ugly. The specious speculation [2] and libel below should be dismissed as M$ generated astroturf, laid in the dark of night.

Re:Obligatory joke
They used the "swoosh" of jokes flying over heads to establish a binary communication system. "Haha" being 1, and "swoosh" being 0.
This enabled them to tell primitive jokes, such as "There are haha!swoosh! kinds of people in the world, those who are able to communicate and those who aren't".
Anthropologists believe that this gave them an advantage in cultural development, because the Polynesians were able to tell jokes thousands of years before the jokes themselves became funny.
Oh, right, you wanted a reference. Here. It's probably not the best one, but I think you get the idea.

Exterminate!
Has everyone forgottten the Dalek Reality Bomb which was designed to destroy the entire Universe?

Mass Driver
In Babylon-5 Harlan Ellison came up with mass drivers as an immoral weapon of mass-destruction on a planet-wide scale. The idea is that you grab nearby asteroids and bombard a habitated planet with them at very high speed. Not only does it indiscriminately kill the population, but the dust kicked up prevents proper plant growth over the entire planet for years, perhaps decades.
