Okay, this is a ridiculous article
Microsoft didn't "change its tune." Slashdot reported on a rumor that SP2 would install on pirate copies. Immediately afterward, Microsoft stated at the WinHEC that the rumors were false. Wininformant reported it the very day after.
Slashdot is reporting this like Microsoft just now changed their decision. For one, they said this already LAST MONTH, and two, they never said SP2 would install on pirate copies anyway. -

Well, it is for Apple. But one never trusts a seller to be impartial.
Others differ strongly in their opinions.
Sadly, Apple's claims are as questionable as ever, but what's astonishing is how quickly the truth has come out. Almost immediately after the keynote, while Mac fanatics worldwide continued chortling over their perceived victory, people around the Web began looking into the benchmarks Apple used to prove the G5's prowess. Predictably, things aren't as simple as Apple's followers would like to believe. More alarming, even dual processor G5 machines still don't match the processing power of a single processor Pentium 4 system, contrary to what Apple announced Monday.
And that's from a *happy* Mac owner:
And the company's hardware is of tremendous quality (I own two Macs and an iPod), with the PowerMac G5 clearly continuing this trend.
I'd hate to see what the Anti-Mac guys have to say.
There's probably no point in showing you the cost of a single P4 system. And, this little foible is probably what has sparked Apple to sell these machines for under $2,000 US. Nobody wants a machine that's slow for $3,000. -
You cheated at the Security test
Um, you cheated.
MSWindows2000 was released on February 17, 2000.
RedHat 9.0 was released on March 31, 2003 (All release dates for RedHat are from this link.)
So Redhat had over 3 years to fix holes in the distribution, while crackers had 3 more years to find holes in MSWindows2000. If you want to play fair,
- use Windows2003 released April 24, 2003 and RedHat9.0 (24 days between the releases), or
- use RedHat 6.2 (released March 8, 2000) (19 days difference from MSWindows2000) or maybe RedHat 7.0 (released August 28, 2000).
If you want to compare RedHat9.0 and MSWindows2000 today, you should fully patch both of them.
I believe RedHat will still win any of the fair tests, but if you use unpatched RH6.2, it will get cracked. It will just take longer because there are tons of script kiddies just sending easy URL cracks at every web server hoping it is running MSWindows. -

Microsoft's chief security strategist made the surprising statement that the company is about one-third of the way to its goals for Trustworthy Computing. I guess there's a lot more going on internally than we're aware of.
The article also says, "Microsoft's short-term strategy will shift from patch management to what the company calls 'securing the perimeter.'" What this means is that they're working more closely with firewall companies.

Microsoft was afraid to touch COMDLG32.DLL for the same reasons. First, can you prove there are "cool builds" that will have 100% of the suggested features in a shipping version of Longhorn? Secondly, the history of Microsoft's software release stategy has been plainly made clear numerous times. Hype, Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt, Buzzwords-o'-the-day, Gross Appropriation (oh sorry, I mean Innovation), and just downright unfullfilled expectations litter the computer timescape.
For a company that has been in the software business of well over 25 years, one would think that with their talk of innovation and "exciting new time-saving" features, we would all have an operating system on our machines that used voice controlled openGL hyper speed interfaces, smart enough to do your work for you while you browsed sites like slashdot. Isn't the entire point of using a computer to save time and be more productive? This sadly is not the case today .

More Spin from astroturfers about patchesNot an excuse, merely a fact. Microsoft has worked hard to earn a shoddy reputation among techies as it has to earn a good one among marketeers. Here are just three examples.
People with production systems are reluctant to alpha test microsoft's patches on their production machines. That's not happenstance, that's policy. Microsoft Senior Vice President Craig Mundie recently suggested that in the name of security, it may be appropriate to force you to install Microsoft patches or updates, and if that breaks your existing applications, well, it's for your own good.
If you think about it, if MS-Support keeps breaking third party apps and/or keeps recommending wiping the hard drive and doing a clean install, they get rid of all third party apps through attritition. It's by wearing down the flunky doing the install or using up all the flunky's time or the end user being unable to use the app until the flunky can fix it. Rather clever, I think, even when considering that Microsoft is more of a marketing company or pyramid scheme than a tech company.

WinInformant says that the statement meant Fiscal year 2004, which ends in June 2004 for Microsoft, and that SP2 is due out mid 2004.

huh?hmm...
Realplayer has certainly tried to beat them in the realm of streaming content, but due to such little things as shit for quality and lack of content, they didn't do so well.
For the longest time "shit for quality" made me hate RealPlayer...but have you seen the newest ones? Awesome quality...heck, it was even good enough to be included in a doom9 codec comparison. So "lack of content" might be because people won't use might be because they remember the "shit for quality" days or because of the competition from media player, I don't know, personally I think media player's codec (wmv) isn't all that big myself, but I guess popularity is increasing.
Quicktime...while it has done fairly well, never really got quite big
Hold on a second...what media content sites do you browse? Almost every online clip is in quicktime...movie trailers, fan movies...you get your eventual real video clips now and then (most of them old ones from the crap quality days) and if you visit a microsoft site, you get some wmv, but that's still the least common.
Microsoft hasn't been offering much competition in the codec department (although it's been pushing the new windows media 9 a lot, to the point where T2 Extreme Edition comes with the entire movie encoded in that format). Now...using the player...it's compatible with divx, mpeg, wmv, and a whole bunch of other formats except for quicktime and real video, and it comes installed with your OS, so people don't bother looking at the other players to play the formats media player can handle, and I guess that's the "unfair competition".

"Linux Rated Less Secure than Windows"
WinInformant was referenced as one of the top articles on this by Google:
"Linux was certified as providing 'low to moderate' security, while Windows 2000 received a 'moderate to high' security rating last year. According to people close to the certification, Linux was being tested for better security ratings, but only achieved the 'low to moderate' rating."
Somebody wanna explain to me how this works? Near as I can figure, all that happened was that Linux is still only EAL3 where Windows2K is EAL4 (versus scoring differently on the same test, as WinInformant seems to imply); IBM's older press releases seem to say that EAL4 testing is expected down the road, but this article seems to imply that they've now tried and flunked EAL4.
I'm not familiar with the differences in the testing, and some basic Googling just turns up lots of press releases so far. -

This is basically my experiance. This isn't specific to windows apps. I have just as many problems with random shareware/freeware apps on my Linux machine as I do my XP machine. Just everytime something happens in windows, it prompts you to send a log in to Microsoft via windows error reporting. Additionally, I think this quote may be misleading as to what Gates actually said. As I mentioned in another post I would love to see the original transcript of this speach. The reporter glossed over this 5% statistic in the NY times article, and Paul Thurott who covered the same speech made no mention of it. Paul is typically very critical of Microsoft and I would think he would jump all over a statistic like that if there was any merit any it. The fact is Windows got a bad rap for stability back in the 9X releases, but thats just not the case anymore. I restart my workstation maybe 1 or 2 times a month, and I have 2k servers that have uptimes of nearly 2 years (not connected to any external network of any kind so no need to patches/service packs).

I think the reporter intentionaly mislead readers. Notice the article has like 2 sentances even mentioning the crash statistics. Paul Thurott covered the same speech and he had _NO_ mention of these statistics and he is usually very critical of Microsoft. I would be very interested to see a transcript of the original speeach to see exactly what Gates said to get this in context.

One aspect of this story that most people don't know about is that up to 80 percent of those Linux desktops will be equipped with VMWare, a virtual machine emulator, under which they will run Windows and Windows applications. That's right, folks: The majority of those "Linux desktops" will be used to run
... Windows. I'm not a big fan of Gartner, but they've issued a report, correctly titled, "Munich's Choice Doesn't Prove Linux OK for General Desktop Use," that raises some interesting issues. First, many of the Windows desktops they're migrated are very old Windows versions like Windows 3.1, making the switch to Linux less painful (it would be equally painful to switch to XP). Gartner says the cost of switching to Linux will cost 30 million Euros, or 3 million Euros more than it would cost to switch to XP, not including any steep discounts Microsoft would have no doubt provided. And finally, because most of the Linux machines will use VMWare to run Windows anyway, Linux is really being used as a hosting environment, and not as a replacement. In other words, this isn't exactly a good business case on which other companies can base a decision to migrate to Windows desktops. -
The Munich Deal
More recently, the company has been stepping up its efforts to convince potential European clients that they should steer away from Linux and towards its products. But even though Ballmer intervened in the attempt to win over the city of Munich, Linux won out.
This is very good for Linux, and I'm not trying to downplay it, but I just heard about this over at WinInformant:

No more cross platform - confirmation
Well, this article confirms that the Linux version is indeed dead, just as many people predicted.
GeCAD's line of antivirus software is well-rounded and supports most popular platforms in use today, including Windows and Microsoft Exchange Server. GeCAD antivirus software also runs on servers such as Groupwise; Linux-based mail servers; file servers such as Samba and Novell Netware, and Instant Messaging (IM) clients including ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, AOL IM, and Trillian. However, a Microsoft spokesperson said the company will discontinue cross-platform support.
I know several people who have actually forked out the $300 for RAV AntiVirus. Our company was one of them. I believe RAV was rapidly becoming one of the most popular commercial antivirus solutions for Unix platforms.
I'm guessing Microsoft would prefer to see the myth that Linux users are unwilling to pay for functional software at a reasonable price perpetuated than risk making additional profit from continuing the cross-platform strategy. -

And this is news...how?
I'm curious how this article became Slashdot news. The last article mentioned the 2005 release date, and it has been common knowledge for a long time now that 2005 was the year Microsoft was slating for as the release date. More informative news would have been this preview of Longhorn's 3D compositing graphics technology that was shown to Paul Thurrot of WinInformant at WinHEC.
It leads me to believe Slashdot just wanted another Longhorn article on the front page due to the wild comments the last one garnered. Gotta get those page hits. -
Microsoft Real-time Communications Server
Microsoft is trying to play in this arena, too. Their new Real-time Communications Server ("Greenwich") just entered beta. It will include security, logging and "follow-me" functionality. Apparently Reuters has already deployed the beta to over 250,000 users already, for customers such as Deutsche Bank and Merrill Lynch.

Re:Name Changing
Microsoft is reported to be removing ".net" from the name of their next server OS which has had several names since we originally heard about it under the code name "Whistler". See this article for a few more details. Less confusing is a laudable goal. If Microsoft has to confuse us a bit along the way, well, that is just par for the course isn't it?

You are assuming that no one is buying. If no one is buying then yes, their loss goes up. But as I explained, if more and more people buy, the loss still goes up. According to this article, Microsoft is seeing growth in XBox sales. No where near the growth that Sony is seeing, but growth nonetheless.

Do you really think that the XBox was just to play games? Comeon, between XP Media Center and a $300 price tag, the XBox was aiming to be "the" box in your living room for both gaming and digital media, especially for homes without a PC already. IIRC, there were originally rumors of an add-on to the XBox for precisely that, although I haven't seen anything about that piece for a while. This would have pushed the MS DRM agenda nicely down the path. Unfortunately, their loss leader doesn't appear to be panning out quite as they'd like.

Furthermore, the Aberdeen Group reports that more than 50 percent of all security advisories that CERT issued in the first 10 months of 2002 were for Linux and other open-source software solutions. The report muddles the argument that proprietary software such as Windows is inherently less secure than open solutions. And here's another blow to the status quo: Proprietary UNIX solutions were responsible for just as many security advisories as Linux in the same time period. Could Windows be the most secure mainstream OS available today?
"Open-source software, commonly used in many versions of Linux, UNIX, and network routing equipment, is now the major source of elevated security vulnerabilities for IT buyers," the report reads. "Security advisories for open-source and Linux software accounted for 16 out of the 29 security advisories--about one of every two advisories--published for the first 10 months of 2002. During this same time, vulnerabilities affecting Microsoft products numbered seven, or about one in four of all advisories."
The stunning report makes several claims that seem to fly in the face of widely accepted beliefs. First, the Aberdeen Group says that Windows-based Trojan horse attacks peaked in 2001, when CERT released six such advisories, then bottomed out this year, when CERT didn't issue any alerts. However, Trojan horse-based attacks on Linux, UNIX, and open-source projects jumped from one in 2001 to two in 2002. The Aberdeen Group says this information proves that Linux and UNIX are just as prone to Trojan horse attacks as any other OS, despite press reports to the contrary, and that Mac OS X, which is based on UNIX, is also vulnerable to such attacks. Even more troubling, perhaps, is the use of open-source software in routers, Web servers, firewalls, and other Internet-connected solutions. The Aberdeen Group says that this situation sets up these devices and software products to be "infectious carriers" that intruders can easily usurp.
According to the Aberdeen Group, the open-source community's claim that it can fix security vulnerabilities more quickly than proprietary developers can means little. The group says that the open-source software and hardware solutions need more rigorous security testing before they're released to customers.
