Re:Stupid
No, there is documentary evidence that the incumbent members of the justice administration consider it too humane.
How to kill a human being is a documentary where a prominent British politician investigates the commonly used methods of execution.
He concludes that the nitrogen method, used in abattoirs to kill pigs humanely, is ideal for human execution too. All the other methods have drawbacks. In particular, lethal injection is noted to be quite painful. In a country who's constitution forbids cruel and unusual punishment, this seems odd.
Several members of the incumbent correctional organizations express the opinion that nitrogen asphyxiation isn't cruel enough because asphyxia induces a brief, mild, state of euphoria before the victim loses consciousness. They also seem of the opinion that the execution should make the target suffer before death to provide a sense of justice to the family of their victim.
If the killers
... go out with a euphoric high, that is not justice [1](and it's rumoured that Oklahoma is actually taking up nitrogen as an execution method after seeing this documentary).

Re:I can kiss my Newton Messagepad goodbye?
But really, why has it taken this long to be able to write on a screen?
It hasn't. Windows 8 devices, for example, have handwriting input. Here's a demo using One Note on a Windows 8 tablet. And another demo. For doing actual work on a tablet you can't beat full x86 Windows for productivity.

A shame it wasn't Jamie Oliver or a few more people might have heard it.
I don't think there is much overlap between the Oprah audience and the John Oliver audience, and one Oprah endorsement is worth a thousand minor-celebrity condemnations. -

Watch two minutes of this video: https://youtu.be/2BzDmZHYCrw?t...
I even linked to the exact bit where they talk about things real girls have said about their real world experiences. That's why things need to change, we know that things are not okay for many girls who do want to study STEM.

Re:What? Why discriminate?
You realize that the tax-exemption does render unto Caesar and God what is theirs, right? The minute that you revoke tax-exempt status for these Churches, they can always start a PAC? They can also start to preach politics from the pulpit. Right now their tax-exempt status is a a balance and check.
Either you live in an alternate reality or you just haven't been paying attention to U.S. politics for the last 50 years or so. Religion has been influencing politics very directly since the Dixiecrat era and the Southern Strategy. Here's a video of a church pastor telling his parishioners how to vote just recently. So, wanna tell me about that "balance and check" again?

Re:Why is it even a discussion?
You actually believe the FCC won't cater to any particular group's requests?
Ironic, coming from a devout follower of Libertarian Magic Dust. This isn't hard: when the government is caving to corporate interests on matters of regulation, it's frequently a bad thing (bank bailouts + no prosecution of bankers) it's a bad thing and if it's done in opposition to those interests, it's generally a good thing (S&L prosecutions, mandating seat belts be installed on new cars).
On this, the feds are acting in opposition to telecom monopolies, which is a good thing.

OK, here's my idea:
There's an accelerometer in the Apple Watch, right? So, I write an app that plays a yodeling sound whenever the watch shakes. Then, when you jerk off, it sounds like this:

Come on, you know that would be the all-time Apple Watch killer app. I'm a lazy bastard, so I freely give this idea to any of you app devs who want to run with it. Just give me a shout out in the "about" page.

Walk on your hands and curses fall flat
As many years as he’s walked on his feet, let him walk on his hands, and for the rest of the time he should crawl along on his ass.
The problem with curses like this is that they would fall flat to people who actually do walk like that, such as Jeanie Tomaini or Spencer West or Jennifer Bricker or Rose Siggins. See also videos about housekeeping and Red Riding Hood and Wrecking Ball Boy. And compare Mark 9:45 in the Christian Bible, where Jesus gives a tip to BIID sufferers: "If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It's better to enter everlasting life crippled than to have your two feet drag you to Gehenna."
He should be transformed into a chandelier, to hang by day and to burn by night.

Regurgitation of a GOP Talking Point...
Other people have already repeated this talking point ad nauseum, so I guess I'm not surprised to read that Carly repeated this flawed strawman. However, her calling someone a hypocrite is a bit hilarious - not as much as the demon sheep ad, but almost. Re:Mamangement
If you can get your work done and still have time to "goof off" like this then obviously you could do more work.
That's how a small minded manager would see it for sure. Personally, I do Easter Eggs when a piece of code is just not working and it's starting to get me frustrated - I don't want to lose my momentum/coding mindset so I work on something fun for a bit then come back and work the problem. Better than losing the rest of the day being unproductive due to being frustrated. My favourite is adding a hidden to webpages that does something innocuous. Gotta love the hilarity that is "The Net" https://youtu.be/46qKHq7REI4?t...

Yes, pretty amazing. People are standing right next to the road where race cars are travelling at up to 150 mph.
So? People are standing right next to the road where race bikes are traveling at 200+ mph - (Isle of Man) Average is higher than measly 150mph
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
I'm an Isle of Man TT marshal. Specifically I'm the Deputy Sector Marshal for Cronk-Y-Voddy Crossroads where the superbikes flash past at around 180mph less than 2 feet away from the spectators!
Current TT absolute lap record holder Bruce Anstey set an average lap speed of 132.298mph In the 2014 Superbike race.
More to the point of the electrically powered racing theme of this thread, the TT festival also includes a single lap (37.74 mile) race for electric powered bikes called TT Zero and this race was won in 2014 by John McGuinness on a prototype Mugen Shinden setting a record breaking lap of 117.366mph average speed.
Compare that to this single lap demonstration run by rally driver Mark Higgins in a stock Subaru Impreza WRX STI at a very similar average speed to the electric bike. ICE engined bikes still hold a huge advantage in terms of range and a smaller advantage in terms of absolute speed, but the gap is closing. -

Re:Objectivist utopia
Coincidentally, a Facebook friend posted this video of the place: Baotou toxic lake.
As i suspected, it's a standard - although huge - tailings dam. Anywhere there's a metalliferous mine, you'll find one (or more) of these. I've only worked in one mine (in Australia) and their tailings dam had been incompetently built and managed - and it leaks into the surrounding soil and water table. I suspect they're like that everywhere, as mining companies only care about money, not the environment, and governments turn a blind eye.
The dust masks worn by the people in this video are rather melodramatic - and useless. It doesn't look dusty and the masks will have no effect on the sulfur dioxide and other gases given off by the tailings.

Watch the first 10 minutes of this video: https://youtu.be/2BzDmZHYCrw
It explains a lot of the issues facing women (didn't mention the pay gap) and has a nice well designed study to back it up.
Things are improving, but the issue isn't "over" yet. We went from 35% of CS degrees going to women in 1985 to about 18% now. That needs to be explained, and if you just look at the data you it will be.

Re:Randian Dumbfuckery
Oh, that's right! The FUCKING GOVERNMENT prevented competition!
This is just more Randian Dumbfuckery. How do your guys maintain your willful ignorance of the 19th Century? Of railroad barons and Standard Oil? Business interests have existed independent of government for millennia, as has the natural market force of consolidation.
Which is first and foremost found in utilities. You could finally find that Libertarian Magic Dust and retroactively remove all functioning government from the United States for the last 100 years and Ma Bell still would have been a monopoly. Because the last mile costs make it prohibitively expensive for anyone but another monopoly to challenge a monopoly - until those two monopolies merge for greater profit. Which is exactly what the Baby Bells have done in reassembling the original AT&T.
Believing in Santa Clause as a grown-assed-man makes infinitely more sense than believing in Randian canards.

Re:May you choke on your own words
And I can't come up with a economically defensible reason to go back,
You understand that the only option in 1968 for finding out whether or not there is a good reason to explore the moon is actually going to the moon, right? And despite your objectivist baloney, human beings do things without a profit motive. Sometimes, great things. How much did Isaac Newton profit when he was working out optics? You think Galileo or Copernicus were doing their rather unpopular work for the sweet sweet coin?
What is money except a measure of economic value? What is capital except a measure of society's perceived value in making a task possible?
Late stage capital is a complete refutation of this purely materialistic vision.
If you have to force people to do something via the application of the government's power of life and death, it probably isn't worth doing.
Wait, you think the guys that went to the moon or the guys that built the Apollo rockets or the people who paid a minuscule share of their tax money to pay for the space program were only doing it because of the "government's power of life and death"?
Maybe you're too young to remember this: https://youtu.be/g25G1M4EXrQ
I was too young to remember it, though I was alive at the time. What I do remember is that the space program inspired generations and it cost less than Americans were spending on cigarettes and cigars every year. We're talking about a people that were only 16 years from having saved their bacon grease and string to be able to help the war effort. We're talking about a generation of people who had come out of a very dark chapter in human history, having sacrificed universally for something they believed in. They didn't scrimp for war bonds and enlist in the military because they thought, "what profit is there in this?" but because they were inspired to do so by larger events. And the larger events of the US space program similarly inspired generations of young people to set their sights beyond just going to work selling insurance or vacuum cleaners door-to-door. During the space program, interest in the sciences - all of the sciences - exploded, and set the route that led to almost all of the technological innovation that followed in the decades hence.
I'm not sure what happened to you. When did you lose your ability to be inspired by something besides selfish financial gain? Though you demonstrate the symptoms of someone who fell in love with the pseudo-intellectual pursuit known as "objectivism", most likely as an undergrad, clearly something else went wrong as well.
