Heins and RIM vs Elop and NokiaThorsten Heins is a RIM guy through-and-through, he was personally responsible for a lot of RIM's decisions in past years. His introductory video basically shows a guy who is out of touch with RIM's fundamental problems.. he promises more of the same, which is really just a recipe for disaster. Compare this with Stephen Elop of Nokia and his "burning platform" memo which showed a new CEO who realised just how screwed their company was unless they made very radical changes.
Although it isn't certain that Elop will manage to save Nokia, he at least understood that painful changes needed to be made. I'm not sure that Heins understands the dangers that RIM finds itself in though..

So Sad...
If I had been taught the nonsensical “science” that is creationism in college I would have had the teacher removed and the program changed It is just that damn simple. It is one thing to teach evolution and then teach creationism as a secondary that student chose to believe or disbelieve but if they were to only teach creationism and then say that no organism on the planet ever evolves or changes given their environment it would be simply retarded. Please see this chart http://youtu.be/7R6aFsxalM8 and then watch this http://youtu.be/Tngy3nI4Gac I think those two videos explain my point quite well

Look at who actually FUNDS science.
I'd think a good place to start is to look at which party has funded science institutions historically. For instance, under George W. Bush, the budgets for the following went up significantly: National Institute of Health - tripled in fact; National Science Foundation; NASA (after it was reduced under Clinton). You may find this counterintuitive, but it’s true and on the record. Funding for science organizations has historically been higher under Republicans than Democrats. Neil Tyson (host of NOVA) explains this quite well. http://youtu.be/x7Q8UvJ1wvk

Re:Alamo Drafthouses are the model of the future
The Alamo Drafthouse had Patton Oswalt perform a "dramatic" reading of a message left at the theater by someone who was angry about having been thrown out for texting during a movie. It's pretty hilarious, and I first learned of the Drafthouse through their campaign of playing the original message as a sort of anti-texting PSA before screenings.

Re:I have a toy ...
I'd LOVE to see your sling-shot. I've never seen one with a three-hundred-meter vertical, two-kilometer horizontal range with enough accuracy to hit a fast-moving R/C airplane carrying a camera.
Total cost for that little gem is less than $300US. Granted, no live video feed back to the operator for that particular example, but it has been done, and it adds about $300US to the above price tag.
Things to make you go "hmmm...."

E-books let kids choose the books they want
I can't let this question go by without talking about the social enterprise I've founded called Worldreader (www.worldreader.org.) We use e-readers to get local and international books to children in Africa. What we find-- and we measure this obsessively-- is that the kids read far more (I've met girls who have 90 books in a year!) and better (as measured by standardized tests vs. control schools) as a result. In a way, it's not surprising: what I learned as an Amazon guy is that when you make things easier and less expensive, people do more of it. See also: cell phones in the developing world.
As for the efficiency question, I can only say that we're super-focused on keeping costs low, but maybe not in the way you think. We get donations from everyone from international publishers (Random House, Penguin, etc.), hardware partners (mEdge donates the cases that protect the e-readers), software partners (Dropbox gives us free licenses), and even local African publishers who let us use their books for nearly no cost. Heck, the hotel where we stay in Accra, Ghana, even gives us lots of nights for free. But at the same time, I do pay many of our employees a salary-- after all, this is their full-time job, and they've got to make money somehow. I volunteer all of my time, but not everyone is in a position to do so. And beyond that, we take trips (flying coach!) to countries like Ghana and Kenya to train the teachers, work with the students, and generally make sure things are going well. Are these costs worth it? You bet: there're the only way we can have the impact we have.
Speaking of impact, if you have 90 seconds and think reading is important, take a look at some of the kids in our program in Africa as they talk about what they're getting out of reading, and how they want to become a doctor or soccer player as a result: http://youtu.be/uhAuD65WYnk (We have lots more video at youtube.com/worldreaders if you enjoy seeing kids and teachers reading and improving their lives.) Or visit Worldreader.org to find out more.
OK, I know this is an ad, but that's part of what running a social enterprise means: believing in your cause enough to tell other about it... and doing it in a way that doesn't cost money! Thanks, Slashdot! -
Re:Somewhere in the engineering processThere is one potential theoretical discrepancy in the slashdot articles statements:
According to an Iranian engineer quoted in the article, 'By putting noise [jamming] on the communications, you force the bird into autopilot. This is where the bird loses its brain.'
The Iranian engineer is claiming all you have to do is broadcast "noise" to "jam" the communications link.
There is a well known mathematical technique called "Stochastic Resonance" whereby noise on a communications channel actually increases the reliability of the signal.
http://www.youtu.be/watch?v=ZSwduEEoCaA&feature=related for a link to a video that improves finger print clarity using the technique.
I'm not claiming drones use this method, just pointing out that "noise" != "jammed" when it comes to signals and communications. -

Re:Windows 8
In the metro interface you can have windows side by side: http://youtu.be/p92QfWOw88I?t=2m04s
Now, this apparently only works for higher resolution monitors (although a simple registry hack removes this restriction), so maybe that was why you couldn't do it.
However, this is beside the point that any user can go on the desktop and run any number of apps side by side (PDF, browser, VS, VLC, or otherwise).

Animated version from NOAA
I know you really want to see the animated version, with narration:

Counterpart to JetMan (speed flying paraglider)
I got to know Yves back in the 90's when he spent some time hanging out here in Zermatt (pre Jet-man days, when he only was doing sky surfing on a scale jet model of the Mirage he used to fly for the Swiss Air Force). Very nice guy. Very intense + focused guy too!
Here you can see a speed flyer (tiny, tiny paraglider) doing a similar trick with a guy flying a wing suit (in Wengen Switzerland). Kudos!

EVs making sound all the time is pointless
After quickly reading the report, it seems that pedestrians are more likely to be hit when a hybrid is going very slow, like when turning a corner in a low speed area. The blanket solution is to have EV making sound all the time, which to me is ridiculous. However, maybe it is worth emitting sound when the brake is freshly released and the EV is speeding up. Maybe a pedestrian can be alerted to the fact that the previously stopped EV is not stopped anymore and should start running for their lives!
Needless to say, a fast running car makes tons of sound from it's tires and other crap -- EV or not. A stopped EV is much like a parked car, and it might be worth knowing it has started to roll from a pedestrian/cyclist point of view. The recommendations just show a lack of imagination, really. The recommendation could easily have been that everyone must always have loud music playing while driving. That would also be sufficient. Pump up the Volume

Re:cost to switch
It's funny you bring that up. I work for a non-profit so I think we need to be extra careful with how we spend money. Nothing blows my mind like walking by the desk of someone who has switched to Mac because they were tired of fighting with Windows, to see them working in parallels. They bought a Mac then they always end up buying office in both platforms and spending a huge percentage of their time working in the OS they claimed they needed to escape. I guess Microsoft likes it, they get to sell 2 copies of office.
I don't play games on the PC a whole lot any more. The one I play most is web based (see my sig - join up -spend money and help me out
:) ). So I didn't even think about when I saw this story comes out. But it makes sense. I still laugh when I watch this. -
