This article includes several references on giving Mars an artificial magnetosphere with machine(s) that are within existing human capability to build. With a functional BFR class rocket, we would have the capability to actually deploy such a system.

Once such a machine were turned on the atmospheric pressure and temperature on Mars would rise sufficiently within a handful of years to remove the need to wear a space suit. Liquid water could (and would) exist in lakes, rivers, and rain. Could have been large impact-driven vaporization events that temporarily create a denser, water-rich atmosphere, perhaps? I haven't read the full study, so I'm not sure what they're positing. Water does need a certain minimum pressure to be able exist as a liquid at all. Hygroscopic salts at high concentrations can let it exist as a liquid at much lower pressures, though I'm not sure how you'd sustain huge brine-filled rivers for billions of years; you'd expect the source of said salts to be quickly exhausted by such flows.

Personally I'm more curious about Venus's rivers, like Baltis Vallis, the longest riverbed in the solar system. We don't even know what fluid carved them, let alone where it came from or where it went. Theories cover everything from liquid sulfur to supercritical CO2, but most likely is that it's thermal erosion by rare (by Earth standards) types of low-temperature lavas, such as carbonatites or similar.

We didn't need to know plastics were making it into our food supply. We were already well aware of the problem because of trash strewn all over the landscape. I grew up in the 70s too and agree with OP. Who the hell thought replacing paper with plastic (which we already knew was extremely durable and took forever to degrade) for single use products was a good idea? I wouldn't place blame entirely upon the environmental movement though. The oil industry was probably involved too, advocating widespread adoption of plastics.

Even today, I've eaten countless downvotes here for suggesting that we throw paper trash away instead of recycling them. When you throw paper away in a landfill, it's sequestering the carbon underground. Meaning new trees have to be cut down to make new paper, meaning loggers see more demand and have an incentive to plant lots more new trees. That increases the rate at which CO2 is extracted from the atmosphere (atmospheric CO2 becomes paper products, so there's a 1:1 correlation between paper thrown away in landfills and CO2 removed from the atmosphere).

Encouraging people to recycle paper products means there's less demand for new paper, meaning fewer new trees are planted by loggers. Fewer trees means less CO2 is pulled out of the atmosphere to be converted into cellulose. Meaning atmospheric CO2 levels increase faster. So recycling paper actually increases the rate of global warming. Remember, "renewable" means you can use it and it automatically replenishes itself. Trees are renewable. And in this particular case, increasing the renewal rate (by throwing away paper instead recycling it) is better for the environment.

Think, people. Expand your reasoning beyond "recycling good, trash bad" caveman logic. Recycling is not a panacea. You can't just think of recycling on its own when deciding if it's good or bad. You have to compare it to the alternatives. And sometimes the alternative of throwing away things is better overall than recycling them.

It's true that Romney, as a Republican governor in a deeply blue state, pushed a health care bill somewhat similar to Obamacare. That doesn't make either law "a Republican plan", most Republicans opposed both.

There was no vote on the bill that was debated for months. Harry Reid gutted and rewrote a bill called the Service Members Home Ownership Tax Act of 2009, which was renamed to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Republicans had no input at all into this bill; it's true that the Republicans in the Senate all voted against it, but there was almost no debate on it, it contained no Republican amendments, and it was passed exactly 6 days after it was introduced (not months like you said, the one debated for months was never voted on).

A short time after Obamacare was passed into law, at a "health care summit", Senator John McCain pleaded with Obama, saying that Obamacare was made without any input from Republicans.

Obama cut him off coldly. "The election is over." Look at Obama's body language when he said it. Was that a man who was trying to compromise with his opponents? Nope, it was a man who had the upper hand, didn't need to compromise, and wasn't going to compromise.

The issue here is that the demand for electricity increased by a large percentage in the US, China and India. Obviously something has to ramp up to meet those demands. In the US that was primarily natural gas, the usage of which increased by 10% in 2018. China is using coal to meet their increased power demands.

Demand increases because population continues to increase. But not by 10%. And the economy doesn't grow that fast. The hidden factor here is keeping the natural gas plants spinning to backup renewables. This isn't a 1 year trend. In CA, CO2 emissions have increased during the last decade, a period where we deployed a large amount of solar and wind. When you have intermittent power sources, you either need storage or you keep a running backup. For CA and most of the US, that's natural gas. The large deployments of wind and solar have much to do with the increase in CO2 emissions but its easier to just blame a cold snap that occurred in 2019? 2018 wasn't that cold and weather certainly wouldn't account for a 10% increase in total usage for the entire year. Residential heating just isn't that large a part of the overall energy usage. A change that big has to be due to changes on the supply side and not on the demand side.

Just take a walk around downtown L.A. or S.F., and you'll soon realize what a monumental problem paper receipts are causing.

Now, I know what she's up to (a properly implemented public option would quickly out-compete private, for profit insurance programs) but the trouble is the other side isn't negotiating in good faith, and will use cyclic political changes to undermine the law. They did it with Obamacare, where a popular law is currently on the chopping block because it's been systematically undermined.

I want Warren and the whole of the Dems to stop reaching across the isle. Everytime they do the GOP moves a little further right to escape their grasp. That's how we got Trump, and that's how we got to the point where we're talking about turning Social Security into a Welfare Program.

Back in the 90s Newt Gingrich and the GOP came up with "A Contract for America" which when you stripped away the niceties was a plan to block everything the other side did no matter what while advancing the most radical ideas of their party. With the current setup, low-population states have more control over the Senate. This usually means more rural states. So, rural states have more power over urban states in one of the houses of congress. So, a minority of the US has control over the majority.

If we were to make the Senate work like the House, high-population states would have more control. Guess what? This flips, obviously. A majority of the US has control over the rest.

And guess what? In the past couple of elections, Republicans should have taken neither the presidency nor control of the House. You know why? That's exactly how the votes went. The US as a whole didn't want want the Republican party to take anything. Why should low-population states have control over the larger ones? If you make senators regional across state lines, there will be more senators for higher-population areas.

Should this really change? I refuse to answer that at this time. The problem isn't so much the setup of the senate. One party has been actively attacking the system for a long time and no one has noticed until the fat orange fuck in the White House.

And I ask: why does a minority of the US have control over a majority? This boils down to two problems: gerrymandering and a party corrupt enough to not give a fuck about the people who voted for them, that also seems to have a problem with allowing people to vote freely. As for gerrymandering, yep, both parties do it. Unfortunately, there's ample evidence pointing to Republicans going to all-out war with the concept. REDMAP is a thing. Google that. I mentioned 41-59. Or something. In North Carolina. A federal judge ruled it unconstitutional. Voter ID laws also fall under this same bullshit. Why the fuck does this video exist? He's admitting that the less people vote, the more Republicans win. This is because the people least likely to vote are minorities. Because they become impoverished. Because they get sent to jail. Because voter ID laws target them. Because less polling places exist. Because wait times go up. Because they can't take off work to go vote. Because they can't afford to take a day off. Because they can't drive there themselves. Because the bus or other transportation costs too much.
