Re: Firefox is dead
Remember Firefox was growing almost unstoppable in 2010 and within 2 years started declining FAST. Any piece of software it can happen too as we all remember the days of 90% marketshare of IE 6 too which started to wane in just a few years to Firefox previously.
A major difference: Internet Explorer was intentionally ignored and crippled by Microsoft to stall the development of web apps in favor of native apps. Firefox won because they pretty much got a walkover and everyone except Microsoft wanted it to win. Nobody at Mozilla wanted to lose users and few wanted a for-profit company to replace them but they lost anyway. IMHO because they took way, way, way too long to do multi-process. Close a Chrome tab and the resources get reclaimed. If it crashes, one tab crashes. In Firefox it all came crumbling down and you had to kill it completely. They lost to Chrome on merit and the sooner they get their head out of their ass and stop blaming other things the better. Yeah I saw the ads for Chrome too, but I wouldn't have switched unless it actually sucked less.
Wait so IE was stalled and ignored only? Hmm. I beg to differ. True Firefox was more standard compliant and added more things quicker and that I agree. But it ignored it's users and it's core competency as a lean mean and detailed browser. By 2010 the world was moving towards having a browser fill out the forms, frequently used passwords, bookmark synchronization, modern security with threading, etc.
Maybe Mozilla suffered from too much technical debt with Gecko which had even more technical debt from Netscape.
Microsoft wanted IE to match the version of Windows as most users like my Mom do not know what a browser is. Look at this hilarious video?
I think in 2017 that hopefully is not true but in the 2000s it was Windows to get on the internet etc. Windows Longhorn had a release date of 2004 so IE 7 was going to be included and we all know what happened with that? Oddly, XP stuck around until 2014 thanks to IE 6 still being used in the office for 13 years!!! Thanks Sap, Workday, and horribly written VBScript
.HTA apps. Anyways Firefox and IE just did not keep up with the times, but in different ways. WinAMP can still play video and .mp3 files fine, but because it didn't have a streaming service became obsolete unlike RealNetwork which sucked ass. Both went the way of the dodo bird thanks to Spotify and Pandora. -

Re:Everybody thinks they have it the worst
Snow tends to affect different regions in very different ways. For example, Seattle is an extremely hilly city. Combine that with the fact that snow is rather rare (meaning inexperienced drivers + no studded snow tires), and an inch or two of snow really is a big deal. Seattle also tends to be a moderate climate, which means that snow may fall, melt, and then re-freeze the next day when the temperature drops again, turning into black ice.
When I lived in the eastern part of the state, we'd get six or twelve inches of snow at a time (or even more), and it was really not a big deal, because it was cold, dry, and didn't stick much, the cities had enough plows, and most cars were wearing studded tires. It's sort of weird how, having lived in both areas, an inch of snow in one place can be much worse in some parts of the country than six inches in others.

NO voting machines are connected to the Internet?
This server...held voter registration records, instructions, and voting equipment passwords.
So the server with the passwords to the voting equipment was connected to the Internet?
Those scanners...can only be accessed via ethernet cable. Once a machine is tested and certified for voting, a cover is placed over the ethernet socket and it is sealed with a plastic band.
Um, what does the other end of the Ethernet cable connect to?
NO vote-tallying equipment is connected to the Internet, anywhere in the U.S. We are not idiots.

Re:Support Right to Independence
Yes and no. I'm obviously against slavery and I'm glad the North intervened to stop slavery. With that said, yes, the South had the right to declare independence. It is probably turned out better for both the North and the South long term that the North won, but, yes, South had right to secede, even if they did it for an utterly despicable reason.
There is NO provision in the constitution for secession, it's legally a one-way-trip to join the union and they had no legal right to declare independence. CGP Grey did an excellent explanation of how this pertained to Texas's recent exploration of the option https://www.youtube.com/watch?... while also commenting in passing on the confederate secession. "Could they succeed? Yes. Is it legal? NO!"

Ramming speed

I suspect that Tesla may be overworking its employees to square the circle between what they are promising and what is possible. Am I eager to see them fail? Would I have been eager to see the Roman Empire fail, after all, those guys who couldn't keep up with the accelerated rowing tempo deserved to be whipped -- see https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
And skepticism about the enterprise makes me vested in seeing Tesla fail (a wrecker or saboteur or is it a moocher or looter in keeping with the Rand's anti-Socialism?).

Re:Isn't inequality about someone not having enoug
When talking about equal opportunity, using the analogy of a 100 yard dash it helps to recognise that not everyone is actually starting at the same point on the track. The race, as being run today, is not fair.
By all means argue for equal opportunity, rather than equality of outcome. That's a principle that most people will get behind. After all, when pressed (and being honest) no-one appreciates a free loader, no-one appreciates paying to give stuff to people who aren't prepared to work for it.
The problem of freeloading however doesn't apply only to welfare recipients, nor to all welfare recipients. It very much does apply to a number of rich people too.
By the way, equality of outcome is not socialism, socialism is not equality of outcome: "A political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole." doesn't mean that the community can't distribute the products of the economy unevenly, based, for example, on the value of the inputs of the members of that community.
Societies that blend capitalist (free flow of capital to where is can be 'used' most productively) and socialist (societal regulation of business) principles tend to be the most productive, successful, happy, and have the most opportunity for individual improvement. Capitalism and Socialism are not opposite ends of the same spectrum, and, in my opinion, it's losing sight of this that is compounding America's problems.

Nokia Communicator type device?
A long time ago I owned one of these
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
It was a clamshell device running Geos. Folded up it had an external display for phone stuff.
Now I reckon something like this might be viable now. You'd have Windows on both the phone and PDA side. The phone would be somewhat limited - i.e. basically a dumb phone for calls. Everything else would done on the PDA side. They could use one of the Atom descendents like this
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
Or they could run on ARM with their x86 to ARM emulator.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
Of course Microsoft have managed to wreck the desirability of such a such a device. Right now if you look at all device classes Windows and Android are actually neck and neck - Windows dominates desktops and notebooks but Android dominates tablets and phones
http://gs.statcounter.com/os-m...
It's questionable if there is still a market for a clamshell phone sized device running desktop Windows. Basically you'd end up with a 5 to 6 inch display, which is probably too small to do desktop stuff.
Also even though desktop Windows has most of the desktop market share, it's no longer the only desktop OS. Back in the old days if you wanted to view
.doc and .xls files you basically needed Windows and Microsoft Office. Now it's not like that - both open OK on my Android phone and Mac using non Microsoft OSs and non Microsoft office packages. And if you want to run Photoshop or Office you need a big screen and fast processor.I actually thought they'd do something like this with WIndows Phone. Instead they decided to kill Win32 support and try to move everyone to buying Metro apps from the Windows Store. And they Metroised Windows 8. Still perhaps now they've officially dropped Windows Phone they might decide to rethink. I suspect the ship has sailed for Win32 anyway though, and that probably means the end of Microsoft in the long run. If you're going to move from Win32 to a new OS as a user you'd be better off moving from Microsoft to Android, Chrome, macOS, iOS or Linux.

Re:Awkward half-way house devices
They tried that already. Gates himself picked Windows 8 tablets over the Courier because it was easier to integrate into the Outlook/Exchange ecosystem. Given how spectacularly and repeatedly Windows tablets have failed, it's good that they're finally revisiting what everyone thought was their ace in the hole against Apple. Watch this video. You're right, it's not a product for everyone, but for the creative professionals who make up the bulk of macOS's (ever-dwindling) userbase, it was way more attractive than the passivity of an iPad, and likely still is.

Re:I wonder...
I have had a person in my family who was in an accident where someone was killed. He was completely not at fault...
And you know this because the victim didn't dispute the police report.
Sadly, the police tend to be biased against bicyclists and pedestrians for "getting in the way" of cars. There was a time when jaywalking wasn't a crime, but then cars came and ruined the streets for everyone.
Streets would've been dirt lanes or similar without cars to drive the infrastructure demand.

Re:Comments
It would be sort of nice if people were able to view such things logically and dispassionately, but there are a lot of people who simply don't operate that way. The recently fired Google engineer who dared to challenge the current company group-think unfortunately found that out the hard way.
That being said, I don't think being a tiny bit sensitive to the feelings of some regularly marginalized groups of people is such a terrible thing. It's not like this is going to significantly weaken their product in any way. Very few people, with a few notable exceptions, talk smack about Dutch people, for example. I'm not offended by a phrase like "going dutch" (with the implication that dutch are cheap). But I'm not gay, nor a jew, so I'm not sure how they feel about such things.
The constant virtue signaling gets a bit old, sure. But I still think that's preferable to the other extreme. Hopefully, someday, we'll find an appropriate middle ground that's acceptable to all.

The energy of gravitational binding is necessarily negative. That is you say, if you have two objects near one another, you would have to inject positive work in order to separate them to infinity.
The most likely answer to the question about the 1st law of thermodynamics is that the entire universe is net zero energy, with the positive contributions from mass balanced out by the negative gravitational binding energy. Current cosmological calculations are consistent with this hypothesis, although it remains to be proven conclusively.
Or, as more commonly stated, the entire universe is a free lunch.

Re:How much is "ISlamic"
Why? The topic is about Islam. The past of Islam and how it has influenced the art and culture is the topic. Why can no one mention the reality of what "change in religion" means in that time without feeling your shame and condescension?
By your standard everyone lives in a glass house because the past is horrible compared to today. Does that mean no one can talk of any culture or any past transgression unless it's their own culture? What happens if those in that culture refuse to critizise their past, I guess that means it was all rainbows and unicorn farts, and "just a change in religion" means nothing more than a friendly door knock like this.
If I remember correctly, the topic of this thread was Islamic geometric art. It was you and your xenophobic alt-right buddies who turned it into some mystic ceremony where you all gather in a circle and hate Islam. Dragging the Islamic conquest into a discussion about Islamic art is about as relevant as dragging the massacre at Wounded Knee war into a discussion about the art of Jackson Pollock. All I did was burn you alt-right drones for going on a pretty stupid xenophobic tangent from a harmless discussion on geometric art in computer games. Just because some random mundane thing is in your mind 'Islamic', like geometric art or falafel recipes that doesn't mean you have some sort of god given right to bother the rest of us by dragging your asinine xenophobic political agenda into it without getting a dissenting opinion.

Re:Other good geometry games
For a "real life" geometry game, take a look at the following books from lost art press, they encourage building small and simple tools (a sector, a compass, a divider), then they are filled with similar "puzzles" derived mainly from the ancient greek geometry theorems (how to find this or that perfect shape in a circle) By Hound & Eye From Truths to Tools Here is a small trailer stop motion video for the hound & eye handbook: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
