Ok, I'm confused. The Slashdot summary says, "connect passenger cars to the ... underground hyperloop.". And the Mercury News web page shows a drawing of the proposal, and the drawing shows a regular passenger car in the tunnel. But what would a passenger car do in a hyperloop tunnel?

The Mercury News web page has a link labeled "proposal for a public transport system to Dodger Stadium". It is a link to this video. In the video, the "car" that goes from the street level to the hyperloop tunnel is a hyperloop car. This hyperloop car is owned by the hyperloop company, and it carries about 15 passengers. The car goes from the street level, down to the level of the hyperloop tunnel, and then it starts traveling through the tunnel.

That second video makes sense to me. It's a way to get passengers into a hyperloop car. This proposed method is in contrast to how most people get onto a regular train, which is by standing on a platform, and waiting for the train to stop at the platform.

The issue is with attribution. AI is just probabilistic black box in lieu of the decision made by operator - typically we're talking about the "search" function of S&D systems.

We know what it might do, but we're not sure. Worse, it's a can of worms prone to potential subversion/ECM with disastrous results, even in civil areas.

When human operator makes an error, they're court martialed or sued. But with autonomous civil overlords, tanks and warships, political pressure emerges to make people who utilize those not liable for any error the AI would ultimately make.

Banning AIs is of course stupid. What should be clearly defined instead is that whoever utilizes such a tool is clearly responsible for whatever happens, just as they would be liable for setting up traps or other deterministic device. This would essentialy curb any use of AI in critical areas, as nobody sane would shoulder that amount of responsibility for something that flimsy.

If a police officer sends an autonomous tank into gang ridden DMZ of the city and it starts shooting innocent civilians, it should be the same as if the officer pulled the trigger themselves. Great power, great responsibility.

My own rules have about twenty different terms, including my state of being, the emotional state of traffic, the location of the sun, the weather, the time of year, the behaviour patterns of wildlife, whether I have my attention 100% on the road right in front of me (sometimes you're mentally navigating 50 km down the road), whether my GPS has lost its mind, etc.

A big part of this model is how my behaviour impacts the behaviour of the other drivers. I have no interest to model being an ass.

I can sometimes be quite aggressive, but I always use the C++ as-if rule: that my deviation from conservative practice has few downstream consequences on other drivers (as a pedestrian, I tend to cross the road as-if I'm invisible, so far as this is practical).

I'm sometimes courteous to other drivers and hold back to let them merge from some parking lot hellhole, but other times I look in my rearview and promptly decide it's not worth complicating matters.

The edge case depends on whether the frustrated driver is sharp enough to realize they've been offered the perfect entrance gap, iff promptly energized (so many drivers have not mastered this simple skill, it positively just kills me; every so often a professional driver looks down as his or her clipboard at exactly the wrong time, so even that assessment is not sure fire).

If you're going to let someone in (from the American right), the less you block their sight line to the neighbouring lane (on your left) the quicker and more confidently the person can assess and perform the maneuver (and the less pissed the asshole behind you becomes). About one driver in every four takes a gander at the glorious sight-line you've provided (in addition to sitting at a conspicuous complete stop, long fractional seconds after the car in front of you has pressed forward in the resumed flow of traffic) and then decides that you've lost your mind—only someone out of control on their cell phone would ever manufacture a perfect courtesy-merge scenario. In their minds, it's not possible that anyone exists who thinks three steps ahead: the conspicuous invitation, room to perform the invitation, and a sufficient sight line to perform it with the least fear and hesitation (which benefits everyone, all around).

Just yesterday I watched the following video: Seinfeld: How It Began (FULL). This was surprisingly good.

Basically every third point in the video above is that the comedy of Seinfeld is based on how "norms" constantly fall through the cracks, and you're left not really understanding expectations, at all.

Seriously, though, I could not agree more with mschuyler. Who would ever think that these attention-mongering prima donnas would bitch and moan so much about doing their jobs? Someone needs to show them what it's really like to have a stressful job---especially jobs that are low-paying, yet require more skill than making a ton of irrelevant Youtube videos.. Better yet, show them what it's like to absolutely depend on the income from two crappy, unrewarding, and stressful jobs.

There are tons of people creating great videos (or other works) out there on the internet that are just trying, and often failing, to make a living from it; those people I have a lot of sympathy for. People like the two guys behind Cool Ghosts, who amongst other things have put out perhaps the best video game review 'TV' episodes of all time.

By contrast, people that are making enough they could easily retire and live an extremely comfortable life for the rest of their days? Those I don't have sympathy for. They aren't actually stuck in any real rut, and their artistic output tends to be a lot less laudable anyways.

No, that's what they're arguing about. Water expands as it freezes so the amount of ice above the water line is roughly the amount the ice has expanded. There is also a small difference between salt water and fresh water as nasch pointed out. But when ice is floating in the water it's displacing it's exact weight of water; that weight once in liquid form will take up less volume and will end up not raising the water level.

I think a lot of the confusion is that ice that is sitting on land masses on the polar ice caps; e.g. Antarctica, is ice that is not displacing any sea water and so if it melts will raise the sea level.
