ADV Confirms Cable Anime Channel

Juanvaldes writes "ADV Films has confirmed reports that they are working to create a cable television channel dedicated to Anime. Currently they are releasing very few details about the channel itself. All that has been publicized at this time is that the channel will run 24 hours a day and will break its content into four categories, Action Zone, Sci-Fi, Comedy Incorrect, and Horror/Martial Arts." Hope I can get access to this one as soon as it comes out.

The single thing which makes anime better than other cartoon styles is their constant willingness to treat it's viewers like adults. There have been other examples of this, such as Heavy Metal and Heavy Metal 2000, but they are rare. The movies which treat their audiences like adults *and* are good generally get a following of fans. Cartoons tend to have a stigma for this very reason -- most people associate them with childrens shows. When a very mature and adult movie(or TV show) comes out, most people scoff at it as "those damn kids shows". :)

Second, Anime tends to be able to beter portray emotion, action, and other concepts than traditional animation. I've yet to see a more subtle, or more recognisable depicion of emotion than the simple "pulsating eyes" trick done in anime to show sadness. In regular animation, the laws of physics are generally followed, but in anime, they are usually willing to drop such laws if it makes the action seem faster, or if it helps a joke play out better.

Plotlines in Anime movies and TV shows, are for the most part, very in-depth. Most characters have a history beyond the story, or in the case of a show like Dragonball Z, you get to see the story progressing, and in the case of DBZ, you get to see the characters change and grow. It shows a depth to the writing that simply doesn't exist in Other cartoons, or indeed, other TV shows and movies in general.

In other words, the art form is just the receptical. If someone wrote a movie which had such literary elements it would likely be immensely popular(like, oh, I don't know... the anime-inspired The Matrix?)

I sorta got into that later in my post, might not have made myself clear, so here goes again:

In japanese it means any animations (AFAICT, IANJ), but if you use it in english, it refers back to "japanese animation".

You know, the japanese word for animation used to mean japanese animation...its all clever-like ;- )

But then you get stuff meant to look like japanese animation (drawn with the same "llok", the eyes and the the mouthes and everything) but without the rest of the producti0on value associated with jap cartoons, like this show I had the misfortune to watch the other day...something about spies...3 girls...Spy Power or something like that. It looked like japanese animation, until you saw it actually moving...crappy perspective, akward movements...all around cheap.

I think when it gets confusing is when you gewt mixed teams. Like the 90's spider man cartoons. The first shows (I counted 8, could have missed a few) had a whole bunch of japanese names in the credits (yeah, I read credits), and the animation was superb! But as the show went on the japanese names went away, and so did the quality of the movements, the fluidity.
Not to say that the japs are the only ones that can do good work, but there are a LOT of exellent japanese animators (and related animation jobs), and they tend to treat cartoons with more respect than the rest of the world.

What I hoped would happen was that the producers of cheap-ass cartoons would understand from the popularity of anime was that its the quality we like. What they seemed to have decided to do is to dress up their cheap crap as anime and hope people will somehow get duped into thingking its good. Sigh.

Ah well, there's Samurai Jack...its certainly not hiding the fact that its heavily inspired by anime, but its good in its own way, without trying too copy it, they learned from it.

The model is failing. All they need for it to completely fail is some cable-only provider like ESPN or Comedy Central to dedicate coverage and they will lose viewership.

Want all war all the time? Go to CNN's Iraq II channel. Then CNN and whatever can actually cover things that are ignored when some big event pushes new aside.

Use it for lighter reasons: Toon Channel (aka the HannaBarbera/WB channel that wouldn't show true alternative or historical animation channel) could run an Anime fest from 10-midnight.

Wow. Guess I should update my web site. I've got plenty more to add. My mind is a raging torrent of possibilities and perils. And suggestions.

    - Even the most sweaty-toothed otaku can't watch anime all day every day. Consider the case of the incredible self-destructing sci-fi channel - everyone thought it's success was a no-brainer. But fans of the sci-fi genre only watch so much sci-fi (and prefer the good stuff too). Fortunately, anime isn't really a genre, it's a medium. I humbly suggest ADV consider what makes a channel successful (particularly the regular network channels) and take a long hard look at how they're targeting different demographics, because an anime channel for existing anime fans alone won't get far.

    - Speaking of which, ADV is completely missing a key genre of anime here, and it ought to be their most important for picking up new viewers -Sports. It's good for many subtle reasons I don't want to go into here - suffice to say that Hajime no Ippo and Initial D, properly handled, could get solid ratings.

    - Certain Japanese moral standards and levels of censorship are a bit more... open than those in America. Nudity in particular is a big issue even for TV, and certain excellent shows (like Berserk) are controversial and violent. How does ADV intend to handle it? Dumb it down for America, make it a premium channel, or just push the envelope?

    - ADV is one of the biggest names in american anime distribution, but there are several others with many good series. Getting them on board would be essential. Bandai in particular might be difficult since they have strong ties to Cartoon Network.

    - One of the biggest obstacles to anime on TV is the high cost of licensing the TV rights from Japan. Considering just how much anime we're talking about, that could be quite a lot of cash. Perhaps the downward spiral of the Japanese economy will help bring the terms down to a sustainable level. Still, promising a percentage of the profits rather than blanket licensing seems like the only way this could happen.

    - They're going to have to compete with other channels snapping up some of the better series, particularly if they are popular. Disney already has the rights all things Ghibli.

    - Since so many dubs are so poor, and since they'll be showing so much anime (and no doubt rerunning a LOT of it), is there an actual possibility we could get subbed anime on TV?

    - I love animation, period. Any chance that this channel would show any of the (lamentably small) body of less kid-oriented animation from america and around the world? Likewise, I hope that this channel could stimulate the production of more mature animated titles in america.

    - Like I said before, just anime might be hard. Why not branch out into other neglected forms of entertainment, particularly those which would appeal to the core demographic? Kung-fu, wierd film, and now (unfortunately) Sci-fi. Say, doesn't ADV do Farscape on video?

Well, that's a start... Hey ADV - call me.

Many people in the channel agreed that they damaged the visual appearance of the show. The ADV employee did not answer the question but rather decided to continue talking with the "fanboys" in the channel who kept saying, "It must be so cool to work for ADV!!!"

From that experience I gather that ADV doesn't care jack about supporting the more "hardcore" fans. They seem to only care care about prolonging the anime fad in the USA.

When this "anime fad" dies, the "hardcore" fan is all that ADV will have left.

In the old days of fansubbing (when people were still trading tapes), the fansubs often WERE better because they didn't go for high localization. High localization will tend to mangle a script. They also took their time with a series. It seems that timing and editing were both superior back then.

Nowadays the digisubbers seem to try to rush so they can get it out before the show is lisenced.

An example of localization messing up the script is as follows: In the first episode of Fruits Basket, Yuki tells Tohru (regarding the inclusion of the "cat" in the Chinese Zodiac legend) something along the lines of "there is no such thing as the juusanshi."

Funimation did not really translate this part very well in their DVD subtitles, because to do so they would have to explain that the Japanese call the Chinese Zodiac "juunishi" (12 Signs). If the cat were included it would become "juusanshi" (13 Signs) instead. But this explanation would be tough to localize. The best they could really do is have Yuki say, "There are only 12 signs in the Chinese Zodiac, not 13."

But they didn't even do that. They just have him say something along the lines of "There is no place for the cat in the Chinese Zodiac."

While what Yuki is trying to convey to Tohru is the same. However, this is a totally different way of saying it.

I believe the fansub I first saw had him say, "There is no such thing as the juuSANshi."

Of course, at the beginning there were cultural notes that explained all this.

Truthfully, nowadays there are tons of fansub groups doing digi-subs online. There are usually many groups doing the same series at once. Many of these groups are fairly crappy. But there are some good ones out there that I feel produce better subtitles than many commercial releases have.

So, the animated Matrix shows would be animated-live-action-animé then?

FYI, WB will be releasing a set of Matrix anime in 2003, and it will be called Animatrix.

To consider these movies to be animé is to be both ignorant and illogical. These show are much more related to hong-kong action movies than to japanese cartoons.

Check out the Matrix / Ghost in the Shell Comparison. It's quite clear that the Wachowski brothers were influenced by anime.

The Matrix follows very much in the style of action anime. And it's not just the fight scenes. The way the characters move when they are in the Matrix is quite distinct from real life. It's all very purposeful, direct, and aesthetic. In other words, very much like how anime characters move.

I suspect one of the reasons why this happens in anime is that it's easier to animate characters if they don't make all the uneccessary movements that real people make. It also looks cooler. Action anime characters tend to look like they're posing all the time. Every cell of animation is drawn to deliver the most aesthetic appeal. You will find that Matrix characters are similar in this respect. Some examples are Trinity's "Doge this!" scene, and the Morpheus (and gang) "We're in" picking-up-the-phone scene. In the latter, the characters in the background don't even move, just like in an anime.

Oh come on! Having a sense of aesthetics doesn't make it anime! Being japanese animation makes something anime, looking cool existed before the japs ever chot their first cell.

Go read my previous post again, and remeber my point: Just because something was inspired by anime doesn't make it anime.

The matrix was also inspired by westerns (the scene right before the subway "bullet time" when Neo and the agent are just looking at each other, very "high noon", they even have a piece of paper pretending to be one of those little bush that are always rolling around in westerns). Does that make the matrix a western? No! Its just one of its many inspirations.
The Matrix is not animated, so it isn't anime.
The animatrix will have anime episodes, although I think they won't all be in that style, so those will be anime.

In the same line of thought, Burton's Mars Attacks isn't a 50's flying saucer movie, its an hommage to the 50's flying saucers movies. Not being made in the 50's makes it separate from the real ones that were actually shot in the 50's.

My intended meaning wasn't that aesthetics equals anime. The Matrix had a certain feel to it. The way characters move. The flow of each scene. These were not seen before to this extent, except in anime. Certainly the Matrix is not an animation, but it has qualities that can otherwise be found only anime.
