ADV Confirms Cable Anime Channel
Juanvaldes writes "ADV Films has confirmed reports that they are working to create a cable television channel dedicated to Anime. Currently they are releasing very few details about the channel itself. All that has been publicized at this time is that the channel will run 24 hours a day and will break its content into four categories, Action Zone, Sci-Fi, Comedy Incorrect, and Horror/Martial Arts." Hope I can get access to this one as soon as it comes out.
Hentai and Manga after 12 midnight?
Time to start pestering my cable company to carry the channel.
Chaos is the order of the day...
As we all know, no one should ever have access to media. It's all copyrighted and stuff, and you can't listen to it or watch it. They'll arrest you under the terms of the MCPTDTBCPCCMIA if you try to do that!
What is the big deal with Anime anyway? Isn't it all just recycled Speed Racer cartoons?
.. will drop today's Slashdot Headlines email because of the ADV in "ADV Confirms Cable Anime Channel"..
Trolling is a art,
Especially with the fact that I can just get single channels now, as the previous story says.
Hundreds of geeks have been confirmed missing. The last statement heard was "Anime channel you say?"
If you get an error, type "OVERRIDE" or "SECURITY OVERRIDE" and then try the optimize command again.
Will it contain the extreme violence and nudity, or will that be censored?
If its strict cable, I suspect it will be censored. If its premium, is there enough fans willing to pay to keep it alive?
Good quote, too many chars. Seriously, the slashdot 120 char limit sucks!
I think they need two channels... one in original Japanese + subtitles, and one in crummy dubbed format. Otherwise there's gonna be riots and killing in the streets, meteors will fall from the sky, Linux will finally replace Windows on the desktop, and other crazy stuff. Mostly by my hand.

... the tentacled monster sex category?
You can't leave that one out and call yourself an Anime channel.
Hell, you could have an entire channel with tentacle monster sex
for in my parish counciling groups, I have heard some horror stories about anime.
There was one young woman from Scotland who's fiancee would only be affectionate when she dressed up as something called Sailor Moon, which is apparently an anime character.
There was another young woman who father would make her wear revealing anime costumes for something called cosplay, I wonder if I should have alerted the authorities about possible abuse?
I have counseled countless young, over intellectual men who have perverted their sexual mores due to extensive hentia watching, for those who don't know, this is the Japanese festish animation involving aliens, tentacles and sexual relationships under duress.
I wonder why kids can't stick with good old-fashioned healthy American cartoons like Bugs Bunny or Roadrunner.

I'm talking Transformers, GI Joe, Voltron, Looney Tunes, Spiderman and His Amazing Friends, etc.? I try to watch saturday morning cartoons these days (yes, I'm 26), but they lack the magic of yore.
Question: Is Transformers considered Anime? If not, why not? What exactly qualifies a cartoon as Anime?

4. They learned japanese so they could watch original anime without dubbing or subtitles.

The Anime Network(tm) model is structured around four categorized content areas: Action Zone, Sci-Fi, Comedy Incorrect, and Horror/Martial Arts.
Comedy Incorrect? Like, they'll be showing Warriors of the Wind or badly-dubbed DBZ?
Zech Harvey, MCSE, MCDBA, CCNA
The article doesn't go into much details about this, but will this channel run non-ADV licenced anime? They have a pretty good lineup I'll admit, but then so does Manga and other companies.

Hey, huzzah for an anime channel and all, but what percentage of those 24 hours do you figure is going to be devoted to DBZ and Pokemon? I seriously doubt they'll put anything on that hasn't been edited down to a G rating, and they'll pass on anything involving sex, drugs, violence, or fart jokes for fear of letter bombing by soccer moms off their valium, so how much can they really program? Plus, I just know my darn dirty cable company won't carry it, and my apartment complex doesn't allow dishes. It's all part of some nefarious plot to allow other people to outnerd me after all my years of effort at being King Dork of the universe.
who doesn't want to see cartoons getting fingerd. people need to be shocked out of the coccoon that the government has put them in, the world is a dirty, filthy place...get used to it and grow up.
No... FM's BAD. Especially in stereo. (Death by Britney Spears)

Trolllll.... Anime isn't all the same. A lot of mass produced anime is, just like our movie industry. But compare two good works, Furi Kuri and Ranma. VERY different. Or even better, compare two that lie in the same genre. Evangelion and Gundam W are two extremely different animes. If you're interested check out some GAINAX stuff, most of their work is unique in the macrocosm of Japanese animation.
If yours doesn't, then might I suggest educating your kids as to why the sexually explicit or violent cartoons are bad, or just buy a new TV that allows you to do so.
It is your job as a parent to raise your kids. It is not the cable companies responsability to monitor what they watch, it's yours.

If only there were someway to post japanese on slashdot, It would be perfect for sigs and snide elitist comments too.
Damn lameness filter.
You've stumbled across what I consider the line between good and sucky anime.
Good anime (to me) doesnt peddle to the LCD (lowest common demominator), like IMO anime like DBZ does.
Unfortunately, this channel will prob air more crap then good stuff.. if no other reason then the good stuff is generally in short supply.
While anime like Legend of the Overfiend is 'intersting' it does hold the same level of appeal to me that Bebop does. Its like the difference between watching the Drew Carey show, and a Sharon Stone movie.
----- The internet has given everyone the ability to have their voice heard equally as loud.. even if they shouldn't be
I've heard from some sources at ADV that the anime series shown on this channel might NOT be shown in their entirety, in order to encourage buying them on DVD.
Still though, it's nice to have any at all.
Besides, it's not likely to be part of basic cable. If you have the channel, you're paying for it. If you don't want it, don't pay.
Just an opinion based, not on fact, but the greedy nature of executives.
i'm sorry, are you discussing anime in your post, or american hollywood?

The chances are that if you bought your TV after 1998 it will come with a V-Chip, which allows you to set a password on all the "restricted" channels, unless of course it is on digital cable, in which case the box will probably come with some sort of lockout as well.
Live for the present, learn from the past, and dream of the future!
There was another young woman who father would make her wear revealing anime costumes for something called cosplay, I wonder if I should have alerted the authorities about possible abuse?
That depends. Was the cosplay sexual in nature? Was she "underage" as defined by your local laws? If the answer to both questions is yes, do you really need it spelled out for you?
I wonder why kids can't stick with good old-fashioned healthy American cartoons like Bugs Bunny or Roadrunner.
Riiight. Have you seen some of the racist ones?. While I feel they're important for older kids to watch and think about, they're not "healthy." Of course, Bugs made up for that later by teaming with Michael Jordan... right?
Please tell me you're just trolling...
Get off my launchpad!
At this point we have, lets say, a billion channels available.
Unlike broadcast TV, setting up a new channel doesn't require millions of dollars for local, bazillions for national viewing - it takes provisioning a new channel.
However, the cable folks seem mired in this 1948 model where you have to have a channel setup for years and years rather than realizing that if you want to tack a new channel on for a couple weeks/months you can.
I thought about this during the OJ trial and the Olympics. If people WANT to watch something that's a limited time thing, then hell, create a channel for it for the duration.
OJ? Fine, the "OJ trial channel" is #58 until it's over. Then 58 is back in the pool of available channels. (disclaimer, I didn't own a TV during that whole thing, I just mocked my coworkers who were watching the blow by blow)
Olympics are 24x7 on channel whatever (or 4 channels if you want), with FULL RUNS of the events, not this highlights crap of things the networks deem popular. Want to watch the Finns battle the Algerians in the Biatholon/Luge/Nintendo event? You can.
Costs are minimum.
On topic: So set up an Anime channel.
It runs from 8PM EST until 4AM PST.
Want cartoon boobies? Well, at 11PM PST, the children should be asleep. we can get over our puritan heritage that says naked is bad (even cartoon naked) but watching a guys head get splattered against a wall in a faux gunshot is ok.
Like violence and sex isn't on normal non-scrambledlocked cable channels already? How have you you kept your kids from watching that stuff?
Just like the government, the cable company should not be a babysitter. If you don't want your children watching explicit material, then sit down, and TALK with them.
When will this end? Can I look forward to a Clutch Cargo channel in the near future? All Clutch! All the time!

-- "Government is the great fiction through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else."
Wow. Guess I should update my web site. I've got plenty more to add. My mind is a raging torrent of possibilities and perils. And suggestions.
- Even the most sweaty-toothed otaku can't watch anime all day every day. Consider the case of the incredible self-destructing sci-fi channel - everyone thought it's success was a no-brainer. But fans of the sci-fi genre only watch so much sci-fi (and prefer the good stuff too). Fortunately, anime isn't really a genre, it's a medium. I humbly suggest ADV consider what makes a channel successful (particularly the regular network channels) and take a long hard look at how they're targeting different demographics, because an anime channel for existing anime fans alone won't get far.
- Speaking of which, ADV is completely missing a key genre of anime here, and it ought to be their most important for picking up new viewers -Sports. It's good for many subtle reasons I don't want to go into here - suffice to say that Hajime no Ippo and Initial D, properly handled, could get solid ratings.
- Certain Japanese moral standards and levels of censorship are a bit more... open than those in America. Nudity in particular is a big issue even for TV, and certain excellent shows (like Berserk) are controversial and violent. How does ADV intend to handle it? Dumb it down for America, make it a premium channel, or just push the envelope?
- ADV is one of the biggest names in american anime distribution, but there are several others with many good series. Getting them on board would be essential. Bandai in particular might be difficult since they have strong ties to Cartoon Network.
- One of the biggest obstacles to anime on TV is the high cost of licensing the TV rights from Japan. Considering just how much anime we're talking about, that could be quite a lot of cash. Perhaps the downward spiral of the Japanese economy will help bring the terms down to a sustainable level. Still, promising a percentage of the profits rather than blanket licensing seems like the only way this could happen.
- They're going to have to compete with other channels snapping up some of the better series, particularly if they are popular. Disney already has the rights all things Ghibli.
- Since so many dubs are so poor, and since they'll be showing so much anime (and no doubt rerunning a LOT of it), is there an actual possibility we could get subbed anime on TV?
- I love animation, period. Any chance that this channel would show any of the (lamentably small) body of less kid-oriented animation from america and around the world? Likewise, I hope that this channel could stimulate the production of more mature animated titles in america.
- Like I said before, just anime might be hard. Why not branch out into other neglected forms of entertainment, particularly those which would appeal to the core demographic? Kung-fu, wierd film, and now (unfortunately) Sci-fi. Say, doesn't ADV do Farscape on video?
Well, that's a start... Hey ADV - call me.
---If you can't trust a nerd, who can you trust?
If you coddle your kids like so, youre almost guaranteeing that when they finally do get a taste of the forbidden when youre not around theyll get hooked and become anime otaku or something.
Where do you think all the freaky addicts come from? Over sheltered families natually. Its in a kids nature to do the opposite of what their parents herd them towards.
I'm thinking Anime along the lines of Golden Boy, Ranma 1/2 (well, cross between Action and Comedy). Anime where you have testosterone ladent guys wanting to get into girls pants and all the hijinks that ensue.
Hey, it's the Japanese version of all those 80's highschool/college movies...
Cable offerings are increasing in general quality, which makes it harder for various cable providers to decide. That, and most of these providers have no grip on what much of their customers want in each demographic. You can have only so much of Trading Spaces before you lose your grip, find the cast and pillage the homes and equipment (after the obligatory jumping of all of the women, of course).
On a previous provider, I enjoyed TechTV and NASA TV. No more on its competitor, which handles the outshirts of my city. However, I gained the G4 gaming channel.
I would like to see amusing anime such as "The Slayers" or "Those Who Hunt Elves", but will have to settle for getting a copy at Suncoast Video, I predict.

The telcos or cable companies find Mr. Taco off the map for anything above POTS connections -- but yet he has hopes that the local cable company or sat provider to the sticks is going to rollover on some respectful unsuspecting channel like lifetime or the golf network and put in "All Anime, all the time" -- now that is wishful thinking.
(+1 Funny) only if I laugh out loud.
I disagree.
Kids are gonna get exposed to violence and sex no matter what parents do. It's much better if the parents talk with the kids about said subjects and make sure they understand that, although it may be cool on TV, it's not appropriate in real life.
Simply blocking their access to it isn't going to teach them anything and may very well do more harm than good, especially if they're good with tech and can find a way around it. If I had kids I'd rather they were exposed to it under my guidance than on their own, maybe getting the wrong impression.

Yay. Again, I don't want to sound like an elitist, but is ADV really who fans want doing this?
First of all, I can't even stand ADV's SUBTITLED anime. They managed to destroy Nadesico with their SUBTITLED version. Not an easy feat, but they managed to do it! I'd rather watch the show
"raw" than watch their subtitled version, even
though my Japanese skills aren't all that impressive compared to some of the other fans I watch with.
Naturally I have some questions about this network that ADV is putting together.
#1) Are they going to be showing ANY subtitled animation? The likely answer is "no," but there is a chance that they'll put some subtitled shows in the lineup at really late hours. Honestly, I will not watch this network AT ALL if there is no subtitled anime.
#2) Are other distributors going to be jumping on board? I sincerely hope so, because ADV is probably my LEAST favorite distributor out there.
If Pioneer, Funimation, Viz, Anime Works, etc. got on board as well there would be more variety.
ADV has the lisence to a lot of series, but I don't know if they can carry a whole network with what they have.
#3) Are they going to put NEW stuff on the air, or are they just going air to put shows that they've had available on video for years? Why would anyone tune in to anime they've already seen on video for years?
#4) Are they going to throw lame marathons of series at us? People have told me that Cartoon Network likes to do DBZ marathons or some such nonsense. That is a pretty sorry excuse for programming, IMO.
"You spoony bard!" -Tellah
Isn't that all Cartoon Network is these days? I stopped watching it when Johnny Quest stopped coming on and shows like thundercats were replaced by DragonBallZ. Such crap, but, that's my opinion.
I think my principles are reachin' an all time low
But you are right, blocking won't solve anything, they'll either just watch another channel to get their fix, or they'll go down the street to little Billy's, cause his parents don't care what he watches.

Just out of curiosity, is there an all anime channel in Japan, or don't they have many speciality channels?
Even Canada has an all animation channel, you'd think Japan would have something similar.

Yeah, and since they know how to read (they do, don't they?) why don't you buy them a book or two (or are they way too expensive?) and let your children develop good imagination and reading/comprehension skills... Anyway. When a child can read Julius Caesar by Shakespeare at 13, I guarantee you he won't be watching TV much.
Oh, by the way: Shelter your kids, and they'll get pregnant (or get someone pregnant) at 15. Educate them, and their brain will be mature when their body is, and they'll have fun instead of abortions. You do think that sex is fun, don't you? (a rethorical question, not intended for PhoenixFlare)

First a note: I didn't read through all the posts, as I have a test on my mind that is given in a 24 hr period, and, well, I haven't exactly attended that class...feel free to mod me down due to my bitching about this. on to the post. More details are needed before I, along with many other anime geeks, will be truly excited. Will there be subs, dubs, or both? will it all be censored to hell a la Cartoon Network? Will, as many others have questioned early on, there be times that "adult" content is shown? (I personally like it because it is nonsensically funny...ok...you saw through my lie.) Will these blocks be time based, or day based, or what? Will it only be anime licensed by ADV? Will there be anime movies, such as the popular well known Akira? My only suggestion is to market this like HBO, which has different channels with different purposes. A family channel with censored crap, A sub channel for "purists" (no comment, I like both types in different cases.) , a dubbed channel for "non-purists" (see above) a movie channel, etc. Hell, with enough capital they could have each "block" be a seperate channel. I am sure that there are enough people that would pay (yes pay....a term I don't like either) for this fabulous service. So if you work for ADV and read this, and think it is a good idea, just send me some dvds and pocky. I am running low and, being a college student, have no money.
No they will mod you down! You made fun of the anime that all the kid dorks are into these dayz (as is the style of the time). I mean come on, don't take yourself so seriously that you can't take a joke. Everything looks the same at the first glance, only after repeated exposure can you tell the difference between anything. Since most people don't watch anime, it's hard to tell what is what.
Though you have to admit that sometimes they do pan a long time on some of those pictures. I mean come on would it really be THAT hard to draw another frame of animation?
llal
The main problem with anime in North America, and especially on cable:
Baaad dubbing. For example, princess mononoke. The dubbing on the wolf gods was horrible. Part of what makes anime good (in it's pure undubbed form) is the emotion etc portrayed by good voice actors.
A real Japanese adult voice sounds pissed off sounds way better than when they hire some famous actor (or even worse, some off-the-street voice who hasn't even hit vocal puberty yet).
American female voices are also fricking annoying.
Subtitles have always been the way for me, even bad fansubs aren't as bad as bad dubs (and sometimes the mistakes are pretty hilarious too... Boy who sealed to tree. Girl who fall down well into past). Too bad standard cable doesn't offer voice-selection with the subtitle option (does digital? If I can get my anime channel in a semi-pure form I'd pay for that).
They should probably set up a whole "ADs only" hour so they can get all their stuff in and done at once. I bought the 13ep version of Record of Lodoss War and holy balls, there were literally 6-7 intro's for ADV in a row before the film started. Crazy.
What about the pr0n category? ;-)
The kid stigma for american animation is a problem. The no-extended-plotlines taboo of american TV is also a problem.
But with regards to non-anime animation not portraying emotion, action, or other concepts as well, I must simply disagree. Such artistic matters are key to animation, no matter where it is made, and there are many different ways of going about it. Watch an old Looney Tunes sometime - despite the simplistic stories, there's actually a lot going on. And what're you smoking: american cartoons bend the laws of physics with wild abandon. Anime has no particular advantage in this regard, and in some ways it's actually at a disadvantage - for instance, american cartoons have worked around their' family-friendly constraints by making subtle jokes that differently at kid and adult levels, while anime in contrast is much more specialized with regard to their target demographic. Anime also often animates at a very low framerate that many american animators would regard as intolerable.
I can only dream of the possiblities if american animation were to move past the first two problems I mentioned. I would truly love to see the results.
---If you can't trust a nerd, who can you trust?
GAINAX? Don't make me laugh. Their stuff has more fan service per minute than any other series I can name, and the "intellectual" content of most of their series is all in the minds of the fans. If you want truely original work, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli is the only real choice.
ADV is one of many anime distributors in the U.S.. Since ADV is the force behind this channel it would stand to reason that anime ADV has distribution rights for would air but anime ADV does not hold distribution rights would be left off the channel.
This would include many Pioneer/Ban Dai series such as Vison of Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, Gasaraki and Serial Experiments Lain.
It'd be a shame not to be able to see such series on an anime channel.
Concerning your comment the form of Christianist that the matrix reflects is an old faction called Gnosticism that felt that the God that we know as God is a entity called the Demiurge and we are imprisoned in a fake work he created. Jesus was a creation of the REAL Godm the father of the Demiurge and sent him into the world to awaken us to the REAL world. Jesus taught secrets to his students and they went out and taught the secrets to others. Several organizations have been compared to (directly and indirectly) to the Gnostics including the Mormons and Freemasons. The Mormon church is about as close as you can get to the old gnotic ideaology. Just an FYI

According to one source:
Once again, while the anime market may seem massive to anime fans, and it's true that the anime industry does have a lot of home video marketing influence and power in America, anime itself is still not nearly as understood or recognized an art form or entertainment medium in America as most anime fans think it is. It seems almost inevitable that America will eventually spawn an anime exclusive television network, but when experienced veterans like the Cartoon Network aren't prepared to venture into extensive anime programming, we should probably take that as a sign that an all-anime TV channel is still quite distant for the American market.

Umm, yeah, I'll bite the troll. Ok, I have spent more than a little time behind the pulpit on Sunday mornings and am very strongly opposed against pornography et all, however, the general stigma against anime is pure fallacy.
Yes, Sailor Moon is an anime character who happens to dress like an ordinary Japanese schoolgirl. There is nothing sexual in the costume, and I have always equated people with such fetishes to pedophiles. I am prone to think your Scottish friend's problem is not the anime, but something much more sinister.
'Anime' is simply the Japanese word for animation. Bugs Bunny -is- anime.
Pornography exists in animation just as it does on live film, that is to say it makes up a very controversial subgenre. You have probably not heard about normal children's television shows and educational comics because the media likes a scandal, ne?
My children will grow up watching anime, and I can guarantee that they will be able to watch a great variety of clean, funny, and well-written shows without any real problem on my part. Give me Akazukin Cha Cha over Barney or Telletubbies ANY day.

The closest we have to an anime channel here in Southeast Asia is AXN (www.axn-asia.com). It features 2.5 hours of Anime (5 shows) shown three times daily (so it's more like 7.5 hours a day). Right now they are all shown subbed. They were dubbed before but they weren't any good (except for Kenshin though).
I hope, one day, AXN will spin-off a 24 hour anime channel. I hope ADV's venture will give them an idea.
If it's not a premium channel, there's a ton of stuff they won't be able to get away with. But if it's a premium channel, it'll be impossible to get subscribers beyond the existing pool of fanboys. The smartest move may be to do both. It's technically possible (on my service MTV2 and Spice share a channel).
Have a primary block that is freely available to everyone and meets regular American TV standards. Advertise it on other channels, and make every series a television event. Show your very best and broadest stuff to secure new viewers. Make it dubbed, and explain things to the uninitiated. The commercials keep this part of the channel self-sustaining. Most importantly, promote the the premium subscription and its advantages heavily.
The rest of the time, the channel is in premium mode and is available only to subscribers (scramble it, but not the sound if you can). It's a much bigger experience. Reruns of series with episodes you might have missed. Subtitled verisions. No censorship. A whole other major block of time with good series you could never show on network TV (right after the primary one). And a lot of lesser series to fill time and expand viewing choices.
It's an unusual approach, but then again anime is an unusual thing to show. I think this is the best option.

I never thought I'd say this, but the entire population of slashdot has a message for you!
"Get a fucking life!"
Try to pull yourself out of the unreal world you've painted for yourself, and wen you get back to reality, do us all a favour: kick yourself in the ass a couple times for reading so much into a message which had nothing to do with pornography, and only made a passing reference to the physics thing! I know it's difficult for your 14 year old mind to concieve, but there are things in life other than sex and pornography, and though this may be a difficult concept for such a demonstratably small mind to comprehend, some people watch movies and TV shows for their plots and literary elements, rather than because the female lead has big breasts.
It's been a long time.
Yes, ADV is really who fans want doing this.
Their recent releases have been nothing short of spectacular. Some of their backcatalogue stuff (nadesico included) have been released kinda crappily due to poor masters, but lately their quality of product has been fantastic.
To answer your questions
1) Probably. Either latenite or the SAP w/ close captions on. I wouldnt be suprised if this happens.
2) Probably. ADV already distributes for some other anime companies.
3) Yes.. Raxhephon (which i cant spell properly) will likely be aired on The Anime Network before its released on DVD
4) All channel do marathons sometimes.
Yes some of ADV's early dvd releases were faulty. But frankly, they have improved far beyond the rest to be the #1 anime retailer in the nation.

If you were not sure that Sailor Moon was an anime, you obviously are not that familiar with anime. It's a media that spans across many themes, including children's television. Shows like Pokemon, Hamtaro, Card-Captor Sakura, and others are perfectly fine for little kids. There is also hentai-anime, which is cartoon pornography. Some of it might even make adults uneasy. And there is an entire range in the middle, from science fiction to comdedy and drama. So hearing a few horror stories and letting it represent the entire genre is like someone who's never watched any TV at all to watch the Man Show or Jackass and think that represents television in it's entirety. I suggest if your kids want to watch any particular program, find a review of it and watch an episode. In the end it is you who should define what are good influences for your children, not the media.
P.S. Roadrunner and Bugs Bunny are some of the most violent media I have ever seen. Time and time again characters pursue their victims with explosives, blows to the head, or getting them to fall off high ledges. After their faces are blown off or their bodies are crushed, the victim collects himself, only mildly annoyed. There is no consequence for what would be murder in the real world, and the lesson the dis can learn is that physical violence is fun. At least in most animes a kid will learn what will kill a person. Hell, in a lot of anime the character will even learn that killing is bad(Gundam, Trigun, and Kenshin are all good examples of animes where the main characters don't believe in killing).

This is the first good thing to come out of Houston since the Space Shuttle.
The single thing which makes anime better than other cartoon styles is their constant willingness to treat it's viewers like adults. There have been other examples of this, such as Heavy Metal and Heavy Metal 2000, but they are rare.
Excuse me, but did you see the same "Heavy Metal" that I did? Unless your definition of "adult" includes stoned 15-year-old boys, there were exactly zero adults being catered to by that movie.
In regular animation, the laws of physics are generally followed
Uh, what the hell are you talking about? Either I missed the section of Newton's laws of motion that concerned coyotes surviving falls from mile-high cliffs and the bit in biology class where they mentioned ducks having detachable (usually via explosives) bills, or you have a very strange notion of what the laws of physics are.
News for Nerds. Stuff that Matters? Like hell.
This sounds cool, I just hope they can pull it off.
Personally, I'd pay what HBO costs to have a channel like that provided it would do the following things.
1. Run complete series. Aka, "Cowboy Bebop Weekend"
2. No editing... Show the series the way it was intended to be shown, not all edited to pieces to cut out "objectible" content.

Oh man - I loved that show.
Do you really think that ADV goes through fansubbers to get their anime? They dont. They have direct communication with the companies in japan. So much so, that ADV is co-sponsoring the creation of over a dozen anime. ADV is always building more studios in order to produce anime faster. You cant seriously belive that ADV purposely sits on titles theyve paid thousands and thousands of dollars for. No. Delays are due to production times, dubbing efforts, lisencing agreements, and the sheer vastness of their catalogue.
ADV communicates with the anime fans on the www.animeondvd.com forums. They have several active reps there that respond to fans on a daily basis. "Getting to them" hasnt been a problem for a few years.
How do you know the fansub is a better translation? Do you speak japanese? Most people find the fansub translation better because they are exposed to it first. Most people in-the-know can point out that, yes sometimes fansubs ARE better, but most of the time the company translations are superior.
In short, you sound totally lame and i am a complete nerd for knowing all this.

Hey! Put the hentai down and step away slowly! You can take away my hentai when you pry it out of my cold, dead, semi-clenched fist.
I'm the big fish in the big pond bitch.
Something that I wonder about is whether this will ever show up in the UK. Yes, I know we have CNX now, which puts us in a much better situation with regard to anime on TV than we were before, but the only decent anime on it are Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star, both of which you guys in the US have already had on Cartoon Network - although we got the uncut versions! They even showed the hot springs episode of Outlaw Star :)
I know there's the issue of whether they have the license for the UK, but IIRC ADV has a policy of getting licenses that cover the English-speaking world outside of Asia. I'd be quite happy to pay extra to have this channel on Sky Digital.
Ahm, one of ADV's biggest seller of last year is a shoujo baseball series "Princess Nine". The owner of ADV love the show so much that he personally negotated its license (though at the time, the show's prospect in a boys dominated R1 market is slim). Well, his gamble payed off, and you can bet your farm that when ADV gets their channel up and running Princess Nine will be amounst their lineup.
So I had puter setup and for some crazy reason I had anonymous ftp set to read and write.
Well, one night I'm in bed and I can hear the server hard drive going crazy. I go over to the server and the console is slow as crap. I check the log and I'm out of diskspace on a 8gig drive that had nothing really on it but a bare bones install of redhat.
So I start searching around doing du and I notice that my ftp folder has about 7gig of data. I look in the folder and there are hundreds of anime porn videos!
I do a search on the internet for my ip and find out that I got flagged as the anime porn hub of the internet. Needless to say, I shut down ftp and made a lot of anime porn fans unhappy.
Personally, I don't get the infacuation with anime porn.. but hey, people also like to watch beastiality and bukkake.

Been beating about the idea for a dedicated anime network for about 4 years now, but lacked the resources (legal, monetary) to forge into it.
The idea was similar, but had an added bonus whereas in the event you had a TV with SAP and CC (most do, nowadays), a secondary audio program in Japanese would be added, with the CC doing it's bit for subtitling in English. I also planned an "adult" segment that would broadcast at the wee hours, with full V-chip compliance (in which, nobody could sue in case their kids were watching Ghost in the Shell and ogling Kusanagi's breasts)...
Ahwell, I have enough ideas on the backburner as it is, it's good to see someone fleshing it out...
Pity it's ADV, however, because I can guarantee the anime shown will have horrible English dubbing, and as they have a pretty limited stock, chances are all they'll prodcast for the first half year is what currently exists within their video catalog...
Just because you can mod me down, doesn't mean you're right. Shoes for industry!
I sit here reading this discussion and I am ashamed. This community appeals to me because I thought it included a general base of intelligence and openess. I seem to be mistaken.
Anime is not all hentai. Maybee the sick fuck who runs your local video store stocked up on hentai, but a mojority of the anime out there is clean. Personally I could care less about hentai, but I do crave movies with PLOTS. Unfortunately american cinema can not offer this.
American cinema is pouring out 'cute' crap like 'the santa clause' and weak crap like 'starship troopers'. I demand more. Mononoke, Gundam Wing, Ghost in the shell, heck even Tenchi Muyo all have deeper plots than anything I see in the USA. Yes you will whine, 'what about matrix or (insert favorite movie here)?' but there are a few jems, but not many. Besides, Matrix is based on anime anyway (oops you watched some anime related materials).
I had hoped that I could see an intelligent discussion about a subject I enjoy, but it seems to all be ranting about hentai.
I get on the net to get OUT of Utah.
Here's a nickel, gimme my 3 cents back.
THE WORLD IS GOING TO END!!!! eventually.
I won't watch anime unless it's subbed, ergo if they don't show subbed anime, I won't watch their channel. As many people have said, there's always the option of using SAP and closed captioning if they want to show dubbed programming as well.
The last time I talked with someone from ADV was in IRC. I asked him why ADV chose to do the overlays with Nadesico. Many people in the channel agreed that they damaged the visual appearance of the show. The ADV employee did not answer the question but rather decided to continue talking with the "fanboys" in the channel who kept saying, "It must be so cool to work for ADV!!!"
From that experience I gather that ADV doesn't care jack about supporting the more "hardcore" fans. They seem to only care care about prolonging the anime fad in the USA.
When this "anime fad" dies, the "hardcore" fan is all that ADV will have left.
In the old days of fansubbing (when people were still trading tapes), the fansubs often WERE better because they didn't go for high localization. High localization will tend to mangle a script. They also took their time with a series. It seems that timing and editing were both superior back then.
Nowadays the digisubbers seem to try to rush so they can get it out before the show is lisenced.
An example of localization messing up the script is as follows: In the first episode of Fruits Basket, Yuki tells Tohru (regarding the inclusion of the "cat" in the Chinese Zodiac legend) something along the lines of "there is no such thing as the juusanshi."
Funimation did not really translate this part very well in their DVD subtitles, because to do so they would have to explain that the Japanese call the Chinese Zodiac "juunishi" (12 Signs). If the cat were included it would become "juusanshi" (13 Signs) instead. But this explanation would be tough to localize. The best they could really do is have Yuki say, "There are only 12 signs in the Chinese Zodiac, not 13."
But they didn't even do that. They just have him say something along the lines of "There is no place for the cat in the Chinese Zodiac."
While what Yuki is trying to convey to Tohru is the same. However, this is a totally different way of saying it.
I believe the fansub I first saw had him say, "There is no such thing as the juuSANshi."
Of course, at the beginning there were cultural notes that explained all this.
Truthfully, nowadays there are tons of fansub groups doing digi-subs online. There are usually many groups doing the same series at once. Many of these groups are fairly crappy. But there are some good ones out there that I feel produce better subtitles than many commercial releases have.
"You spoony bard!" -Tellah
Of course I know SOME Japanese. I usually am able to pick up quite a bit and can often tell when people are saying something quite different than what the subtitles say.
The reason I still use subtitles is that I don't know everything, and I especially have problems understanding dialects other than the "standard" language (such as the Kansai dialect).
"You spoony bard!" -Tellah
Yeah, if God had wanted us to have sex He would have made it our way of reproduction
I'm more inclined to agree with the violence part though
Don't think of it as a flame---it's more like an argument that does 3d6 fire damage
Must be because you didn't want to read Shakespeare but rather watch TV?
"Piter, too, is dead."
Has any US network ever shown all 13 episodes of Cybersix?
> the "intellectual" content of most of their series is all in the minds of the fans
I'd rather watch a series that facilitates the exercise of my own imagination over a series that spoon-feeds it any day.
im sure that being a physics genius you would be well aware of the effect that the 'on/off' button has on the electron gun in the back on the teevee ... (hint : it actually causes it to cease functioning)
(and yeah, best that we shield everyone from violence and sex, cause they never happen out in the real world)
FYI, WB will be releasing a set of Matrix anime in 2003, and it will be called Animatrix.
To consider these movies to be animé is to be both ignorant and illogical. These show are much more related to hong-kong action movies than to japanese cartoons.
Check out the Matrix / Ghost in the Shell Comparison. It's quite clear that the Wachowski brothers were influenced by anime.
The Matrix follows very much in the style of action anime. And it's not just the fight scenes. The way the characters move when they are in the Matrix is quite distinct from real life. It's all very purposeful, direct, and aesthetic. In other words, very much like how anime characters move.
I suspect one of the reasons why this happens in anime is that it's easier to animate characters if they don't make all the uneccessary movements that real people make. It also looks cooler. Action anime characters tend to look like they're posing all the time. Every cell of animation is drawn to deliver the most aesthetic appeal. You will find that Matrix characters are similar in this respect. Some examples are Trinity's "Doge this!" scene, and the Morpheus (and gang) "We're in" picking-up-the-phone scene. In the latter, the characters in the background don't even move, just like in an anime.
There is one channel (I think is from Chile or Agentina) called Locomotion. It's 50% anime (Bebop, Saber Marionette, etc) and 50% other stuff (South Park, Duckman, Dr Katz, etc.). It might be somewhat censored.
If the ADV channel is not premium, all anime will be instantly censored, edited, and maybe like CN, with constant reruns. Heck, even Fist of the North Star movie was censored in VHS and HBO runs. (the LSD effect when anyone exploded)
There is a lot of fansub on the net, and a Chinese company that distribute region-all anime series. It's not top-notch quality, but at least it's not censored and horriby expensibe. Any american distributed OVA/series is $50-100.. Any entire season of the Simpsons cost much less!
Simple: All they'll need is to have their Fritos, Pepsi and socks delivered to their door and they never have leave the house again.
Opps! I pressed the wrong button. Am new to slashdot. In any case... BAKA ZARU! HENTAI! I'm taking potshots at you! Okay, here is how you define anime. IT's the style that matters. What one people consider anime, others may not. I've been watching and reading anime for as long as I can remember (okay, I'm 18, so what?:)) and one of the things that makes anime anime is that it must have been published in manga format first. (at least for me :p)
Manga, for all you unintiated guys (I'm presuming I'm talking to MOSTLY guys) are comic books. If the manga is really popular (which happens about 45% of the time) then they turn it into an anime if it's popular enough and they get good connections, like Sailormoon.
In case you were wondering, you should read the mangs first BEFORE watching the Anime. There are a few exceptions to the rule, but I've yet to find one. Any of those who have AXN (Action Network here in Asia) will agree. Personally, I find DBZ's anime annoying, having been able to get my hands on all the manga before watching the anime.
Let's see... That's all I can think of for noe. Flame me if you want, but be warned... I'M A FANFIC AUTHOR! I CAN KILL YOU IF I WANT TO! MUAHAHAHAAHAH!!!
*knocks evil twin over* Sorry guys. My twin got control of the computer, but I think you can guess that that's SOMETHING an anime fanfic author might write :)
1 + 1 = 3?
Thank GOD that ADV Films is a local company. I have a friend that is very good friends a few people at ADV and some who do the translations and voices. There was a story in of the the local newspapers about ADV Films and how they are growing.
The reason ADV overlayed nadesico is because it was a back catalogue title, and that was the only masters they had for the show. They dont overlay new titles. Stop complaining about something they dont do anymore.
:)
:)
The people that work at ADV are some of the most hardcore fans around. Most of them used to be fansubbers! At the same time, ADV is a company, and they do need a return on their investments. Its a fine balance that they do a superior job at.
Oh yes, the days of trading tapes. Yeah, theres nothing I enjoyed more then those hecto fansubs, let me tell you. Bad spelling, unecessary swearing, and just not subbing stuff because they didnt feel like it or were too drunk at the time.
Your comment on localization is foolish at best, and only comes into affect with shows like dbz, pokemon, and other pop titles.
I myself am A big fan of linear notes. Hell, look at ADV's release of excel saga. Their pop-up-video style notes are fantastic. You cant really accuse them of pandering to the general public.
Funi is a new company, and this is an odd example. Does this affect the story or meaning of what was said at all? This is a tiny nitpick. "Hacking" of the script is when they refer to sake as tea, or try to Americanize phrases. They are still including the cultural signifigance in the translation.
FYI "There is no such thing as the juuSANshi" is not a translation, they left a word in thats not a name! Proper, professional translation should contain the meaning and intonation of the original phrase, while at the same time saving the cultural signifigance. (the piss/water phrase from mononoke applies here)
My problem with funi's release of furaba was the small subtitle font!
I disagree. Ive got many friends who are major members of these fansub groups (yes, the good ones) and they know their stuff isnt nearly as good as the professional release... tho the use of kareoke is quite impressive

Replying to a troll I know.
I did not imply that maturity was equivalent to wisdom.
I did not imply that abstinence was a defect. It's a choice. Like drinking. Drinking can be fun, and people abstain.
if you saw sex as a duty and felt "peer-pressured" then you probably did not want to do it. Anything that you do that you don't want to do is not going to be fun.
Also, if the girl is not willing, it's rape, regardless of the age.
Male teenage hormones can take jail for an answer. This is why it's very important to educate children well in that regard because a 18 year old fucks a 17 year old, and he's looking at jail time, hormones or not.
Even if you didn't want to drive (personal choice, nothing wrong with that) you would still want your child to take a driving course before getting behind the wheel of a car, wouldn't you?
Sex is fun when it's done responsibly. When I mean fun, I mean, enjoyable, pleasurable, and relaxing. Just like driving and flying a plane. True you don't have to do it, but if you don't do it because you think it's scary, then seek therapy and make an informed decision.
"Piter, too, is dead."
Aren't all dub companies famous for making promises and not following through? We've got to hold hope anyway. If ADV does create this anime channel I wonder in how many places it will be available. It won't do any good to have a channel if nobody can see it.
Sweet Jesus, this is what I have been waiting for. I'm lost for words. ^^
I think the introductory material to the original Car Wars game (Steve Jackson Games) covered this quite well.
It depends... You cant compare the quality of an average Sailor Moon episode with a movie like Ghost in the Shell or Akira.
Some made-for-tv anime definietly suffers from repetitive scenes and low framerates, just like US-made animation, however most Anime movies and made-for-video episodes generally have very good quality work.
And of course, theres the occasional studio like Gainax, who make an art out of saving frames... There are lots of scenes in Evangelion where movement is non-existant and 2 or 3 minutes can passby, creating wonderful tension in the audience.
No sig for the moment.
Once there lived a village of creatures along the bottom of a great
crystal river. Each creature in its own manner clung tightly to the twigs
and rocks of the river bottom, for clinging was their way of life, and
resisting the current what each had learned from birth. But one creature
said at last, "I trust that the current knows where it is going. I shall
let go, and let it take me where it will. Clinging, I shall die of boredom."
The other creatures laughed and said, "Fool! Let go, and that current
you worship will throw you tumbled and smashed across the rocks, and you will
die quicker than boredom!"
But the one heeded them not, and taking a breath did let go, and at
once was tumbled and smashed by the current across the rocks. Yet, in time,
as the creature refused to cling again, the current lifted him free from the
bottom, and he was bruised and hurt no more.
And the creatures downstream, to whom he was a stranger, cried, "See
a miracle! A creature like ourselves, yet he flies! See the Messiah, come
to save us all!" And the one carried in the current said, "I am no more
Messiah than you. The river delight to lift us free, if only we dare let go.
Our true work is this voyage, this adventure.
But they cried the more, "Saviour!" all the while clinging to the
rocks, making legends of a Saviour.
