Ben Browder Joining Stargate SG-1 Cast
Ananamous Coward writes "Ben Browder, best known as Farscape's John Crichton, will become a SG-1 regular starting from season 9 (yes, there are already rumors about a 10th season), joining the SG-1 team although is role is quite unclear. He will fill the gap left by Anderson who's unlikely to return except for small appearances.
Claudia Black, Farscape's Aeryn Sun, is also going to play in a fair number of episodes"

How will this affect the rumoured Stargate movie that is apparently in planning stages? I don't know about any other fans of the show, but a big budget Stargate film without Anderson in the main role somehow doesn't seem as appealing. Oh well, back to watching old McGyver episodes, I guess...

First they replace my favorite show of all time with a crappy series that's been on the verge of dying for years...then they take its cast. Viva la Farscape!
Given that in one of the first couple episodes, they mentioned "MacGuyvering" the Stargate's control system and had Anderson glance at Tapping when that line was used, how long do you figure before there's the first Farscape reference in an episode?

It's been on that long! I didn't know that. My girlfriend was a real fan (yes /.'ers, they're out there some where). She got me hooked on the show.
Episode 8-12 has already been circulating in the TV-Torrent sites for a while. Not to spoil anything, but Claudia's character in it is a rather cliched, yet entertaining character because of it.
For some reason, the episode had odd the feeling of a Bioware RPG scenario, with all the strange choices and snarky replies flying around.

They were going to have to add someone eventually. Of course, SG-1 has probably already jumped the shark, largely due to Richard Dean Anderson's unwillingness to either poop or get off the pot, so to speak.
What I don't get is that they write Don Davis - who has said that he really enjoyed being a part of SG-1 and wanted to keep doing it as long as the fans kept the show alive - out of the show, so that they can promote RDA to the SGC's commanding officer, when they know good and well that RDA is fading fast from the show. Hell, they *froze him* at the end of Season 7, so why didn't they just keep him frozen and let Don Davis continue being the great performer he is?
they should have named it babylon 6 if they wanted 6 episodes. It would only have spread out the inspiration of the screenwriters 20% more.

I find it confusing when people start popping up in other shows. I mean, when the holographic doctor from Voyager appears as a government lawyer in SG-1, one kind of expects him to have his emitter fail every minute.
For movie actors or minor characters, that's not so much of a problem, but for regular cast members, it's weird.

It's had a great run, I enjoy the show, but there is nothing I hate more than shows that are just dragged on for so long, I want the thing to end already!
An ultra military hard-ass. A cocky SOB. Almost sanitized. More like a cross between the marines of "Aliens" and "Master Chief" of Halo.
More mission centric. Military brat. Academy graduate....give him a father who is a naval admiral. Not a seemingly soft edge. A cut to the chase character.
I like where they say they are still trying to clear the character name through legal channels... if you read between the lines kinda thing (or then again, maybe not)

This might have been interesting say 5-6 years ago when I used to watch tv alot - but now with tv being quite aweful do we really care about some actor moving into a show that may be good but no longer in its prime...

I couldn't get used to all the characters from the sitcom Benson appearing in Star Trek as lead characters.
I was certain that Gretchen Kraus was going to show up as the Borg Queen.
The movie was pretty lame, and I was surprised when they picked it to be the basis of a series.
I was even more surprised when the series turned out to be good.
A warning though, there's a lot of changes that take place during the run, and if you don't start at the beginning, then there's a lot to catch up on, and it's easy to get lost. You almost need a hard core fan sitting next to you giving pop-up bios and updates.
That said, rent the first season or so. I haven't watched it in a couple years, due largely to factors outside the show itself, and when I had the chance to watch it again, I declined because I kept getting lost. "Wait, this character was DEAD for a season? Why's he back???"

RDA has been telling everyone he was on his last season for three seasons. He really want to spend time with his young daughter.
No matter what, RDA's character will apparantly stay alive in the background. BB will be playing a new character.

Well if you've seen "Prometheus Unbound" (and you torrent users know who you are!) then it seems to me that it looks like that is exactly what they did. Don Davis is in. Dean is out.

I didn't think they could do anything to make me love the series, but here it is...*not missing an episode now*.
Farscape was killed off thanks to Stargate (Sci Fi crunched the numbers, SG1 was cheaper to produce, yet had more viewers, even with reruns) Personally, I think there's room for a good old-fashioned crossover! Browder's character actually IS Crichton, he runs into SG1 while they're unwittingly exploring a Peacekeeper planet, they have to take him with them just as the planet is destroyed, blah blah.
Next up: 21 Jump Street goes undercover on Law and Order
I'm not sure if the show was ever on the verge of dying, but I certainly was after watching ten minutes of it. Browder and Black must feel at least a little bit humiliated. I guess maybe sci-fi misses some of the viewers they lost with Farscape. This really is a big fuck you to all the Farscape fans. And please, no inane comments about how sci-fi was doing its fiduciary duty by canceling Farscape.

Granted, SG1 is played out, and I think it is truly time for a graceful transition either into a new mission and new cast, or into oblivion. But the mythology is still rich with variation. I'm actually impressed with what I've seen on Stargate Atlantis. As far as small screen sci fi, its the best we have going right now.
Moving the show would probably double the cost.
So are they going to put Dom Deluise in his head so he'll have someone to talk to, just like in those Farscape episodes?
Browder has a wonderful range as an actor and he can even act in front of blue screens, Muppet's and people wearing makeup and foam rubber by the kilogram, but you gotta wonder what he's going to do on SG-1.
I mean on Farscape, he regularly pulls off Cocky, Funny, "burnt," and once, a very powerful death scene... pretty much everything his character is asked to be/do with one exception: he is nothing like convincing as someone who has anything to do with science.
The thought of Browder on SG-1 asks a buttload of questions about what made the producers want him. I mean, SG-1's humor (as delivered by R.D.A. in the current cast) tends to be far more downplayed and suble than what Browder has played on Farscape.
Could be interesting. Could be an accident waiting to happen.

Seems like a step down after Farscape, but work is work.
They'll beat this horse until its dead. Then they'll beat it until it is a frothy pink and blue foam. Then, they'll bottle it and try to sell it to us again. Sci Fi KILLS good sci-fi. They kept playing musical airdates with Farscape, then dropped it because the ratings could no longer justify the expense. They did the same to Lexx, but the writers there pulled a trump card on SciFi and brought the story arc to completion before SciFi could utter the words "cancelled". Before too long, SciFi will be nothing but low cost creature features and cheap space alien horror flicks. Oh shit...too late.
You know, I get more sci-fi on the other 78 channels on my box in a given day than I get in two days of SciFi.

I think the real reson the movie had potential to become as sci-fi tv series (and did) is because it had a great plot device for exploring space. In space based sci-fi, anything that makes crossing vast distances in space seem do-able, quick, and also cheap to shoot (ala the transporters in star trek:tos) is a great idea.

SG1 is not a bad series but compared to Farscape it looks simplistic, formulaic and moralistic.
If SG1 is going into its 10th season, how hard it would have been to do the 5th season of Farscape properly instead of the tacked-on miniseries?

Give me more Black in SG1, it was the first really good episode in this season. But on the other hand, the best of SG1 are all the tongue-in-cheak, very out-of-character episodes -- "Window of Opportunity", "Wormhole X-Treme" or the one with O'Neil speaking Ancient, for the first time

Indeed. Somehow UK's Sky One ended up getting the second half of Season 8 before the US, despite the first half showing in the states months before. Episode twelve of both SG-1 and Atlantis are due to air on Sky One on the 4th Jan, which seems to be a week before US viewers will even see episode eleven.
I thought Claudia Black's character was too much like Aeryn, but perhaps that's just because she's a really poor actor? ;)
None of Browder's jokes will be funny. Those Earth reference jokes he uses on Aliens just won't cut it in the Stargate universe...

The series is great... Right up to the end of series 7, then it gets a bit rubbish. Having O'Neill in charge of the SGC is just wrong...

No, James Spader is 1000 times better as Allen Shore than he was Dr. Daniel Jackson. As Dean Anderson is 1000 times better than...um......who was that guy in the movie? ;-)

It seems like most everyone on here thinks that it's the producer's fault that Richard Dean Anderson isn't on the show anymore. Get a grip, some people get tired of the same job day in and day out and want a change. After all, he's not only an actor on the show, but he's also the executive producer. I imagine that makes for a long work week.
SG1 and Farscape are both excellent shows. I bear no ill will toward Sci-Fi for canning Farscape, I imagine that the show was massively expensive to produce so although the decision was a tough one to make, it had to be done for the network to survive.
Richard is a fine actor. Ben is an awesome actor. It's kinda like comparing William Shatner to Patrick Stewart. Give Ben time, you may grow to love him.

Oh, glad to hear it's gotten better. I watched a couple Season 1 or 2 episodes and went back to watching (insert name of a random sci-fi show... it was probably better). That was the most godawful derivative tripe. I wondered "why" when SciFi first started carrying it, since most of their original stuff was so much better. It was like they decided to pick up another "Lexx" (another godawful show, for those lucky enough to have not seen it), rather than a good show. (Guess Roddenberry's latest crap shows were priced too high)
That said, rent the first season or so.

And oh, the irony... they cancelled Farscape because it got good ratings but cost too much, and now they're trying to bring over the (somewhat-less-alienated-since-the-miniseries) Farscape fans by grabbing the actors. Wonder if that was the purpose of the miniseries - give the fans a sense of closure(?), and give them (okay, "us") a reason to stop boycotting the network.
That being said, my new favorite quote about how SciFi has gone downhill over the years: "the writing was on the wall when the Sci-Fi channel showed Braveheart".

This is some of the best news I've heard in Sci-Fi since I found out the BSG remake didn't suck at all (and was actually quite good). My two favorite scifi shows are merging!

But still, in my opinion, extremely enjoyable.
Every character in SG-1 is still quite unique. One of the things I like about it is that it's fairly internally consistent with respect to some other sci-fi shows. It makes sense that after 8 years, the guys would have rubbed off on each other quite a bit. Hell, they're all the best of friends at this point (the actors AND the characters). Naturally RDA's extremely snarky attitude and sense of humor would rub off on Shanks (and O'Neill's on Dr. Jackson).

Commander John Crichton was not in the USAF. He was a scientist working on an IASA project. Think Pete Siebold with TierOne/SpaceShipOne.
It's actually a reference to the movie "Secretary" that he's in (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0274812/). It's an . . . interesting film.
The Glass is Too Big: My Take on Things
The series was put into syndication before SciFi was even a channel. USA Networks bought syndication rights from MGM. When Showtime cancelled, USA's parent company bought the rights, and Sci Fi begain airing episodes. Until a few years ago, you could still see very old reruns of SG1 on USA. Even now, Sci Fi and USA share rerun and syndication on some shows, including Xena, Hercules, Andromeda, and Beastmaster. They both are owned by the same parent company.
I was kind of hoping Corin Nemec (Jonas) would rejoin the SG1 team now that Anderson (Oneil) is out off the team... I never cared for Farscape, so I really dont know what to expect from this guy. Hopefully I wont be too disappointed.

I stopped watching mostly because Michael Shanks' character annoys the hell out of me, and the storylines became increasingly about stroking his, um, ego. I mean how many episodes do you really need centered around his whining: "We should totally do the right thing, you guys!" then saving the team, some ancient civilization, the earth and in fact the entire galaxy with some brilliant discovery and/or single-handedly taking out all the baddies in a sudden burst of masculine prowess. All the while all the other characters stare at each other blankly and randomly walk into walls: "Save us Daniel! Save us with your unwavering morals and your massive intellect!"
I mean geez, they made him a god for a season, wtf?

I feel that SG-1 in season 8 is a bit adrift. The 3 main actors seem to be vying for the vacuum left by RDA.
Hopfully the importation of Farscape will give the show a needed shot in the arm. Instead of a slow death.
Babylon 5 was a five year show, with two additional spin-offs such as Babylon 5 - The Legends of the Rangers, and Crusade, including 5 or 6 TV movies. Not bad...

Farscape was still the #2 rated show on the SciFi network (even after shuffling the schedule around and randomly running new episodes).

Apparently having a full night of good TV was too much for them to handle... So instead we now have to have Stargate and Stargate Atlantis back to back
This season has actually been pretty decent. I suspect they fired all of the writers from the first couple of seasons ... either that, or they sobered up long enough to write something that sort of makes sense.

Personally, I thought Farscape was a great series that got way too dark and jumbled in the last season or two. It was a show that lost its way. Maybe it was too ambitious? SG-1 is less ambitious, and though it may have stumbled a few times, it never really lost its way.
I'm a big fan of SG-1, all the more since there aren't many real SF shows left on TV. However. .
Am I the only one who thinks SG-1 is getting kind of old? And cheap? I mean. . . In the beginning they had great, elaborate costumes and sets, and lots more bit parts and extras (including great ethnic actors to represent some of the planets they visited) and great military equipment props. As season after season rolls by, the production gets pared down more and more -- it gets more austere and repetitious. Fewer characters, fewer cool props, more austere sets, more of the same stuff getting recycled. And I swear, someday they are going to step out of that stargate onto yet another alien planet covered with the same damned pine trees, and I'm going to lose it.

Perhaps the reason scifi is doing this is to keep Browder around while they come up with a script for another movie/season of FarScape? We all know it's about the benjamins and perhaps the free publicity and decent reviews the recent mini-series garnered were enough to kick start another run....I mean they did decide to proceed with the new Battlestar Galactica (which I personally didn't find very good) so how much of a stretch is it to believe Farscape is FAR behind ;)

They should kill Stargate and bring back Farscape. Stargate used to be a good show but it has gone downhill in a bad way in recent years. Since Richard Dean Anderson and Amanda Tapping have personal issues that are taking up their time, they should just kill the series.

If you have to get hooked on a series at 4 am when infomercials are slamming all the channels, something is wrong. Perhaps you don't see it. But, let me help you.
The show sucked. It was gayer than a guy with his hand up a puppets ass for a hour. I hope this helps. Since it's not 4 am, you can better trust your judgement.
Where I live, SG-1 has barely put feet in season 6. but I already saw all episodes aired wherever up to this day. Alas, I'm not a die-hard-give-all-fsck-others fan of SG-1 (but you could call me one in the case of Trek and Babylon :) for tv-shows, and for a storefull of sci-fi literature), but there were many bits and points in the storyline [of SG-1] which kept me watching episodes one after the other.

These bits and points thing was a huge miss for me in the Farscape show, especially for two main reasons: the very immaturely childish nature of the storyline, and the actors [i.e. acting]. I deliberately don't include the design and the puppets, because a story's goodness factor doesn't really depend on there being puppets or not.
So when I read this story on guys coming over for extendd periods from Farscape, I just shivered. I guess SG-1 has provided me(us) fan(s) with a pretty long enjoyable story (pushed to be lenghtened twice already), so I won't be especially sad to see it go, but I hope these guys won't think they are still in Farscape, and provide us with a show worthy to still be called Stargate SG-1.
I hope JDA and AT will be back for good play, the show wouldn't be the same without JDA's "comments" either

The best part about seeing him in SG1 is his role in Twin Peaks where is a connected to a top secret government project researching aliens. So every time I see him in is SG1 role I smile (Okay, okay, I do not watch it that often)

No no, they shattered. Being that they were already crystallized (regular atomic structure), its not inconceivable that with the right superglue and hours of patient attention, one couldn't be put back together. Now, being partially digested by Rygel, I had some qualms with that scene.
Kurt Russell's O'Neill didn't really have much of a sense of humor. He was more of the tortured-haunted-guy.
