New Star Wars Movie From the Makers of 'Troops'
Anonymous Coward writes "A new fan-made Star Wars production is underway from the creators of the well-known 1997 Star Wars spoof
'Troops'. I.M.P.S. - The Relentless is a documentary style feature following the crew and missions of an Imperial Star Destroyer during the height of the Galactic Empire. While slightly more serious than Troops, the first available chapter of I.M.P.S is an exceptionally well-produced (and still subtly humorous) piece of fanfilm. Worth it for the incredible CGI alone."
Not even any replies yet, and it already seems to be slashdotted...

What an intense movie! Although a bit short for a movie, I don't understand why the credits ends with "SERVICE NOT AVAILABLE". Who is this "AVAILABLE" fellow and what did he had to do with the movie?
I mean new Star Wars are bad, but still can be made considerably worse.
I brought 'Star Troopers' to friends without watching it myself before, and I were constantly telling them I were thinking this parody will turn into a real drama real soon now (because it created some associations with the beginning of 'My Enemy'). Only because of this friends (and me) watched it to the end, then they were really angry as if it was me who shoot so braindamaged movie and spent all the budget on building usual hype.
Stop whining. Everyone but you knows it.
No wonder Anakian felt so helpless and turned to the dark side of the Force.

I downloaded the trailer and the first chapter a couple of weeks ago. They are top quality, and a must-see. I am anxiously awaiting chpater 2, and I'm not even that much of a Star Wars fan.
Somebody post a working torrent ASAP! These really bad jokes using classic Star Wars lines are making me want to rip my eyes out!
Oh, and for the record, Han will get that torrent up, we've just got to give him more time.

"That's great if you just want the teaser, but for the actual movie that page links back to the dead server."
The downside of the internet. Kind of hard to "route around damage" when the linking nature of the internet removes most of the redundancy.
For those of us who can't use bittorrent:

Yeah, right.
If you have azureus...just juse the Magnet URI
C VJ FR
magnet:?xt=urn:btih:RDFJDRRUQXGXPZBH7BCFXGRPGKA
Note...slashdot puts a space before the last two characters..so when pasting the URI into Azureus (latest version) with "open location" be sure to omit the space.
AND...be sure you have trackerless BT plugin enabled! (when starting up Azureus it takes a couple of min to integrate into the DHT network)
Worked a charm for me. Do you have a link describing the magnet: protocol and how you managed to get this information on the torrent?

I had trouble finishing the film.
Most of the movie is CGI of ships, walkers, etc. with a narrator's voice discussing the Empire's army in some sort of documentary that's part poorly written propaganda film and part unemotional and cheap knock-off of COPS.
Clearly the CGI was a lot of work; it's beyond what I could have done -- but it's hardly spectacular --- and I believe much of the criticism of a certain sci-fi film is how CGI does not a good movie make.
The acting is poor. Of course, it's hard to express emotion when you don't see a single face throughout the entire movie, save for a few moments at the end, where officers suddenly appear for no apparent reason. The demeanor is off for military personnel, and the whole thing just doesn't come together in the end. Apparently, the crime involved the smuggling of teddy bears and action figures. That's fine for a joke, but not after 20 minutes of tedium.
I'm sorry but there's nothing to empathize with in this movie. It drags on without purpose, without being sure of its concept at large. The beginning narration feels like it's about to be cut off, and then just keeps going on and on and on. It makes you scream, "Make it stop!"
I don't think much thought went into this film as far as the story or script are concerned. A very vague idea went in, and some people went to work on their computers. I'd give it half a star out of 5.
Another fine SW parody: Grocery Store Wars.
"Stop that ship! Blast them!"

How is it that Star Wars fans can make better movies than George Lucas?
"well known" or "notoriety" is entirely subjective. . .
." aren't you?" God only knows how many people only recognize me by sight.
Well of course it is. I've had to make this very point any number of times myself when people have sought to claim that I either wasn't, or was, "famous."
Certainly any number of people, quite possibly in the millions, have seen my name and image in the traditional media and it isn't unheard of for complete strangers to walk up to me and say, "Oh, Hey, you're ". .
While browsing the web I've been startled to find pictures of myself I hadn't even known had been taken, being quoted in webzines, and even as an attributed, by full name, sig.
In certain niche fields I have even been branded a "legend" by some.
And yet "nobody" has ever heard of me. I'm probably most "notorious" right now right here on Slashdot (I've spent the past 5 years or so actively seeking to keep my name out of the traditional press. It's in all the local papers right now anyway) Of the thousands of people who have read my posts I'd hazard you couldn't find ten who would recognize my name or image.
It's a funny world we live in these days. You can be known to millions and unheard of, at the same time. I am and am not "well known" depending upon the context of the phrase.
Ask any random person on the street if they know who Einstein was and you'll likely get the answer, "Yes."
Ask the same person if they know who Bertrand Russell was and you'll likely get the answer, "No," but you can find his entry in even the most pathetically bad general encyclopedia.
We've had to invent a phrase to indicate "noteriety" that goes beyond mere "fame":
Household Word
And yet you'll find households that have not heard of even Einstein.
In my city of 60,000 you'd be hard pressed to find someone who hasn't heard of Michael Jordan; and equally hard pressed to find one who has heard of David Beckham.
Would you posit, because of this, that David Beckham isn't "well known?"
some people really need to get back to reality once in a while
Exactly. You are, like it or not, a mere data point in the statistical phenomenon of "well known," not its measure.

Whoever wrote this just needs to spinkle a few "cockmunchers" into the dialogue and it would be an ep.of RvsB
Well, they did get Peter Cullen to do the narration, so that's gotta count for something.
Is it just me, or is the whole thing a subtle shot at so-called "American Imperialism". Am I such a "Bush-hater" that all I can see are analogies to the U.S. military, and their ill-advised excursions (i.e. Vietnam, Iraq)? I guess it'd be funny if it didn't piss me off...

Yes it has alot of limitations but it was still pretty entertaining.
The city they put together is amazing, especially the giant neon signs. They did a good job integrating the CGI and live action.
So the acting and writing is a little limp. That makes it about the same as the current crop of star wars movies.
There were some cute jokes, like the beeping noise the AT-ATs were making while they backed up.
The shoot out in the landing bay was nicely done. Alot of complex effects underway at once and well-handled.
People are incredibly hard on these 'fan' movies, to the point of spewing bile. This one is just fine. They did a ton of work on it I applaud their efforts. I hope they keep working on their skills and concentrating on the weak areas.
. . .what's your claim to fame?
Ah, I see I failed to make it explicit that when people try to make the claim that I am famous I deny it.
Someone like David Beckham can point to a single thing for which he is known. I cannot, unless it is the raw tendency to attract notice with a hefty helping of pure circumstance to as low a level as my genetic structure. Whatever noteriety I have is built Lego fashion from many smaller sources, some of which have been completely beyond my control.
I understand that some people desire fame and even seek it, usually failing.
I find the entire concept distasteful in the extreme and seek to avoid it, but it follows me around, often through no merit of my own. Life doesn't seem to be fair. I have rejected numerous requests to publish a website, newsletter, blog, dead tree autobiography.
But I was not born into independent wealth and a girl's got to make a living. Maybe it's the fishnet stockings.

I don't know what people expect for these things. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The production values were amazing. The beginning was cool as they pulled back to do the reveal. The narration was very well voiced, done by Peter Cullan.
If you are expecting award winning performances or originality, then I suggest you look elsewhere than Star Wars fan films. The exposition lasted quite a while, but I expect that is to setup the rest of the series. For this episode, I enjoyed the mixture of the Predator creature. The banter amongst the troops was funny, and they even pulled off the being humorous when the remaining Milenium Falcon left the bay. I loved the ending. It was very light and poked fun at themselves.
I am sure the rest of the series will be just as enjoyable. And who knows, as these people make these things it will open doors of opportunity and inspire others to do the same. On those grounds alone, the film is worth the effort.
Total length of trailer: 1Min 50 Sec

The first 20 sec is a shot of the black sheep productions logo.
The next 55 seconds is tight shots of a trooper putting on various pieces of his gear. kinda like in any one of a dozen or so USMC recriutment commercials.
The a bunch of shots of troopers standing/walking around.
Including
Troopers in snow: 1:19 and 1:24.
Troopers in desert: 1:16.
The last 25 seconds is shots of text directing you to their web site.

This isn't flattery, but a sincere compliment: I think you are the most fascinating person on slashdot. It's obvious you have wide and varied education and experience -- something the normal person doesn't have. I like to look outside the norms of life, as that is where real excitement and achievement occurs. You inspire me, and I'm wondering what you did to reach the place you are at now. This is not the first name I've friended you on... I've been reading your comments for a couple years off and on.

LMAO. Actually, I am definitely a big fan of those, but no, I am genuinely interested in KFG's story.

Considering that he's been doing voice work for 40 years, I think he's earned the right to take it easy these days. He did voices in most of the well-known action cartoons in the 80s (he was Optimus Prime, for example), so it's not like he's a nobody.
I mean, sure, I'd be even more impressed if they got Frank Welker on board, but his voice doesn't have that resonating quality that Cullen's voice has.
I was really quite impressed. A decent amount of humor, something resembling a plot, I look forward rather anxiously for more of these.
He did voices in most of the well-known action cartoons in the 80s (he was Optimus Prime, for example), so it's not like he's a nobody. Oh that's rich. I must be on Slashdot.
Yeah, but please note that some sites (e.g. torrentspy) publish an equivalent information: the info hash.
You can convert an info hash to a magnet URI and vice versa with this small Python script: simply pass the hash or the URI to the command line. There's a hidden treasure in Python 3.x: __prepare__()
I'm immensely curious to know who you are. But I have a feeling you won't enlighten me.
I think I've got it figured out, depending on whether or not KFG is from Chapel Hill.

Interesting. Fame is like a skin disease, I guess. People makes judgments before you even open your mouth. They have preconceived ideas of who you are, how you live, what you like, etc. It's fun when it is at a very small scale, but I would not like at all being known by _millions_ of people who would/could talk to me while I walk in the streets and, the worse in my mind, talk _about_ me all the time. And there is the dark side of it: the stalkers. I guess the rich and famous lose something that we all take for granted: their anonymity. Some of them are almost raped out of it. The star children for example... I salute you, and I salute your efforts of trying to be one of us ordinary people again.
It's crap.
He did voices in most of the well-known action cartoons in the 80s (he was Optimus Prime, for example), so it's not like he's a nobody.
He still seems to do a lot of narration for big-budget films and games (Warcraft III's trailers, I remember in particular).
Definitely one of the coolest male voices ever. I was shocked when I realized that Black Sheep really had gotten ahold of him for this.

Any SW fanfic that can make a Pulp Fiction reference work is OK in my book. I thought 'troops' was more fun in general though. I was so mad when they barely got any mention at that awful lucas self-back-patting of SW fan film award show dealy. "I want ton ton's for Xmas?" what's up with that?

As the title of the post says, I submitted this story 2 weeks ago and it got rejected. It wasn't exactly fresh then, since the IMPS chapter 1 was released on May 25th, but it's a lot less fresh now.
I was certain somebody would submit it again later and it would be accepted. I just didn't want to bother the editors with it again. Oh well, here it finally is and that's good, since it is worth the attention.
Zonk was on shift after CmdrTaco 2 weeks ago (5th) just like on this day (19th), and Zonk rejected it. I would have bet a coke back then that if it had been submitted about an hour earlier to CmdrTaco it would have been accepted. It seems I would have won that bet...
Anyway, the point of this little complain is, I knew it would be of some interest to the slashdot crowd since Troops was and still is a positive exception in the sea of less than memorable SW fan films. Too bad Zonk couldn't realize this, or it would have been a little fresher for everyone (and isn't that what Slashdot is suppose to be about?).

And what, you think Justin Timberlake being cast in Shrek 3 because he's boning Cameron Diaz is a good thing? People need to start giving props for talent, instead of fellating people whose only claim to fame is that they are famous.
I've yet to see one that didn't make me laugh out loud. Seriously. They all have fat Americans running around pretending to be cool, which is just silly. :) Like they're trying to relive something in their childhood on film. I can understand that, but just try and keep it to yourself. Until fans get the idea that little things called "production value" and "the ability to write dialog" are necessary for any scripted fan creation, we're just going to see more and more of these horrible videos. oof.
