A Mac Mini-lennium Falcon
Jon Bell writes "Derrick Hixson has submitted an amazing entry to the MacMod Mod Competition, a 'supercharged' Millennium Falcon: complete with Mac mini and iSight. It even includes front USB ports. His modguide contains complete build instructions, and plenty of pictures."
but heres a tie fighter case mod in the meantime5 ,00.asp

It was done with a PC long long ago: http://mods.xkill.net/redir_falcon.html/
And it cooks Toast!

Do the editors get a sense of pride in downing other people's servers? I mean, Slashdot probably points people to places such that they get 1000x their usual visit traffic, which means that they are simply unprepared for such an unpredictable load spike.
It is right up there with the Bender Computer.

That's what happens when you use a Mac.
You are right. Damn them for using a Mac for this, despite Netcraft saying the server has been Linux/Apache. That'll teach them, they should have been using Windows XP running IIS.
Any time a post has "Plenty of Pictures," it's usually bound to get slashdotted. This is probably because when readers see the words "Plenty of Pictures," they think, "Hey, even if I don't RTFA, I can STFP and infer what TFA is about."
Deduction will get you nowhere with me!
Since this site is down for the count, here are some more Mac related hardware mods:
AppleFritter
and some software ones too:

Enjoy. Hopefully someone will post a mirror of the orginal.
Jumpstart the tartan drive.
here is the google cache of the site, pretty neat actually....h ttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.macmod.com%2Fcontent%2Fview%2F371% 2F101%2F&btnG=Search/

One of those die cast Millenium Falcons they're selling at Wal-Mart for about $250? Build a good enough heat pipe, and you have a perfect cooling situation, along with nifty removable panels, and George Lucas' blessings!
Just because you can mod me down, doesn't mean you're right. Shoes for industry!
hopefully we can keep it up
X-box in a 1979 Millenium Falcon model
His modguide contains complete build instructions
Well, given that Mac is now based on Mach and BSD, and Apple simplifies everything they can, wouldn't the build instructions be simply "./configure && make all install"?
Here's the Coral Cache link:3 71/101/

Should start working after a while... Coral should cache the pics as well, as Mirrordot is useless in this regard (picks behind links)...

It is definitely NOT against the EULA to open a mini, nor does it void the warranty (unless you mess something up).
Also, NDA? Who signs a NDA to buy a computer?
Just like driving a car:
(D) to go forward
(R) to go backward

do the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs?
In case useful to 'ya, here's my experience with the Slashdot Effect - mostly data on the numbers, but a few pointers I learned and got from others in the 2004 summary about configured Apache if useful - big one is turn KEEPALIVE OFF.
Hulk SMASH Celiac Disease
Here's a text-only copy of the site from Google. It's a shame about the pictures, but at least his captions are descriptive.
Who needs a fricken Deathstar when the Slashdot Effect does the same thing quicker? Vader did it the hard way.
Table-ized A.I.
Slashdot editors managed to spell "millennium" wrong twice in the same post!
Oh wait, that's not so amazing after all.
He who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.
not so much impressive as it is intriguing. Certainly anyone could have done such a thing with a little time and a couple bucks (and perhaps a certain disregard for the wellbeing of a mac mini), but the point is they thought of it and they followed through and came up with something interesting. Certainly future versions or copy cats could be much more involved. For instance: I'd love to see a flexible screen in place of the rear decal that could show the movie or something. Either way, while not particularly impressive, it certainly is a little fun.
ok that mirrordot.org is a bit to groovy for me! if only they could chill a lil bit but heres the real link: http://mirrordot.org/stories/86fd73f0fa55d03172110 82b067e0031/index.html
So I thought I would root around www.macmod.com and see what I could find.... There are not a lot of replies to this story, but the site still got slashdotted. Displayed on www.macmod.com: " First of all we want to thank /. for the great article.
However, this has put a little strain on the macmod server. Therefore, we have put up this page until things cool down. If you are looking for the Mini-linium article please check out the following link, thanks to mirrordot.org.
Mini-linium Article "
Sir, the rebel server is in range
Excellent... Commence firing ignition!
Some really great pics easy to understand building instructions congrats for a well written article!
"It's against the EULA to open a Mac mini, and certanly against the NDA. Apple will sue."
It's amazing that you could see the pictures at all considering your anus is in the way.
"Derp de derp."
Not really THAT impressive, since he basically just put the Mac into the plastic model. See what can be done if you start from scratch with a motherboard instead of just hiding a working machine: http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/minifalcon/
Profit = my server is on fire?
If the guy was smart, he would have put a giant outflow fan on the bottom of the Falcon and the thing could have floated above his desk!
It might sound a trifle loud though.
I guess for added effect he could also add a blue light below it just like the ricers do on their cars.
..........FULL STOP.
wow, that site was slashdotted after less then 3 minutes.
"Thats what I'm trying to tell you, kid. It ain't there. It's been totally blown away."
"What? How?"
"Destroyed...by the Empire!"
"The entire starfleet couldn't destroy the whole planet. It'd take a thousand ships with more fire power than I've..."
Yup...

Has anyone done a study on how long it takes a site to be /.ed once it makes the front page?
Another thought: In the WAT (War Against Terror) just put the terrorist web sites on the /. front page every couple of days and watch them go down.
When the pictures are still hosted at the original site! Think for a second, folks.
It doesn't mean much now, it's built for the future.
VIA EPIA and see link above for normal PC. Sigh.
What do you mean that's it? This is the ship that did the Kessel run in under 12 parsecs!
As I've got Boba Fett's Slave 1 just begging to be gutted :)
For the less ambitious (or those who are actually busy)
Tie Fighter
What I want to see is a Ford Falcon modded to carry a Mac Mini or other computer ;)
I'm always a bit disappointed by these articles on case mods. I guess it's art, but it'd be cooler if the case were mobile...
This guy has taken a Mac Mini, an iSight, and a cheap interface board (called bTop) to create a programmable autonomous robot.
Somewhere out there I think there's a video of George's case mod chasing him around the room.
Not that I post on slashdot or anything.
Looks like the site has been slashdotted! I can't access it.
Rawr
...to put a great looking computer into a really crappy and ergonomically unusable case. I hope he at least had fun.
Hmm, interesting...not sure if that's what Lucas intended (I had always chalked it up to the usual slips in sci-fi by over-techno-babbled writers), but that would work.
