Slashdot's Disagree Mail
Everyone likes to belong to something. Whether it be for fun, a sense of belonging, or a need for attention, a group gives you a feeling of solidarity. Surrounding yourself with people that share common goals and ideas can be comforting. Sometimes however, you realize that you hate the people you've surrounded yourself with. Your religion doesn't allow you to read anything that has profanity or you've subscribed to Slashdot thinking you could learn more about hockey. This week's collection is composed of people who don't want to play, read, or be associated with us anymore. Read below to find out how bad they want out.

Also, what is the expected result of our discussions of this stuff? Is it to pick it apart and analyze it? Is it to provide user generated retorts that you can't due to legal reasons? I shall try a little of both.
Is Slashdot trying to add an optional low brow element to satisfy users that have left for other sites dedicated to that? Because, you know that half of your users are going to tag this 'pleasestop' or some such negative approval tag.
Also, why does it look different than the rest of Slashdot? Isn't it just another section? Why do you need another CSS for it? I seem to think it would be better site design to have a thorough reused theme but maybe you want the reader to know it's Idle. Who knows? Sure seems to upset a lot of people.

"I'm relly sick of the level of discrimination that goes on here."
This level of reverence for the moderation system never ceases to amaze me. Hell, I myself can have a sour day if I'm given a thrashing on a post. This person doesn't even seem to be a regular user and they are already upset.
A very peculiar amount of power, these mod points are. Enough for someone to call a negative moderation discrimination!

Despite being raised Roman Catholic for 18 years, this still baffles me. I know I'm not the first person to share this view (I think I read about it in Vonnegut's "Palm Sunday") but there is a reason I don't swear often. It's not so I can be 'clean' and 'pure' ... it's so that when I do swear, people know I'm not fucking around. Seriously, if you're dropping f-bombs left and right then where do you go when you're genuinely upset? I prefer to not raise my voice so those words are reserved for extreme moments. I feel bad for the people who incorporate them into everyday life ... how loud do you think an injured rapper would have to raise their voice before people gave them medical attention?

Are these the same coworkers that face physical abuse or verbal ridicule if they don't agree with you?

Of course you're not an idiot, you're just a hockey fan. And if <insert object here> isn't bleeding with hockey (in this case the internet), you are angered with it. I understand. I'm from Minnesota where many of your kind roam around in large herds laying waste to beer and stadiums. I would suggest moving there for solace and the ability to experience all hockey all the time.
My work here is dung.
I suggest you think about changing your name to something that isn't obviously about hockey. I asked some coworkers and they agree, I'm not just some idiot.
This made me laugh out loud. Funny how stupid people always think they're smarter than they are.
It blows my mind you're still posting this garbage on slashdot. Listen to your users.

Why your people deem it necessary to use the language that they do I can never understand
We're a VB.Net shop. The language was forced upon us. We don't like it any more than you do. Sorry.
Sometime soon this section will die a slow death, but the stinking corpse will still lay around for all to see. Kinda like Slashback or those regular friendly fireside chats Cmdr Taco started (and then stopped) all those years ago.
I am Slashdot. Are you Slashdot as well?
It's sad to me that someone like the profanity guy just doesn't have a clue about the emailing mechanism (if he is indeed seeing emailed articles). I support people in their right to really find their own niche on the web; it's just too bad that many of them will never find it because the curve is too steep. Those of us who are happy to use Slashdot have already found our own ways of blocking trash we don't like, but many people are forced to wade through LOTS of stuff that they don't want to see as part of their normal web-surfing experience.
So, I totally sympathize with him, even though it's obvious his email is misdirected.

What was it that prompted Slashdot to start posting its hate mail? Was someone clamoring for this?
I can only guess that posting stuff like this which causes a flurry of messages proclaiming it's stupidity is merely the result of slashdot trying to get more eyeballs on advertisements.
I come to that conclusion by process of elimination because there is no other intelligent reason for this.
I mean c'mon! Okay you post duplicate articles, you don't read summaries, and you once let JonKatz sully this site. But cmon! Do you really have any journalistic integrity? If you want to post letters from users, post constructive letters and have a discussion about them, rather than post flamebait.
The entire "idle" section is horrible, it's not even entertaining. To top it all off, Idle's layout is ugly, and when I post a comment, the comment field is 2 inches wide in the latest version of firefox! Why do I want to see anything here?
Kill Idle and bury it. For all of those who agree with me, I suggest you go to your preferences and set your content for the Idle section to "none." I'll be blocking the entire section because it seems to be the only way to get thru to the slashdot editors that crap should not be tolerated. This is because if you block the article, you block the ad that comes with it, and that hits home in the pocketbook. Follow the money...

Before you complain about being modded down, let me just say something.
It isn't about "I'm so clever" it's about courtesy and polite for getting modded into oblivion. Ask 1 of the twitters who lashes out randomly with racism and you'll know why he gets modded that way regardless of what he says.
Some people only "joke" about being smart. It's a certain type of humor you may or may not understand. But as far as us thinking we are better than you (or anyone else). It's nothing like that 99% of the time.

This is a great series. Please continue Disagree Mail.
I'll post it here publicly saving them the step of pasting an email into an idle post for public ridicule:
The weekly "Lookie who dum everyone else is!" column is sad. Sure, these people aren't your core audience (obviously) but going out of your way to hold people up for ridicule and abuse when they've done nothing but be ignorant (At worst) is juvenile. But as a feature with the full blessing of the parent company is beyond unprofessional, it's just disgusting.
I know that a large part of Slashdot culture is holding the ignorant up to the cleansing flame of truth and then having decades long flame wars with ourselves about "truth" but it's exactly this part of the culture that we need to shed if IT professionals want to shake the stereotype of being socially stunted. (By, you know, not acting like we're socially stunted.)

"This Rank Garden" -- sounds like a 90s post-grunge band.
I just find him great: "...because of the filth you are tending in this rank garden". I might not agree with him, but the particular green at the top of the page reminds me of certain jungle plants which grow in deep shade and have developed a similar hue. Also they show a metallic luster which comes from certain crystals they are growing to gather even more light. I just can't find any - oh wait it is on google books: "Vegetation-climate Interaction", Jonathan Adams, Ning Zeng. On page 89 you will find something about Begonia leaves being blueish green and iridescent and living on the rain forest floor.
http://books.google.com/books?id=NMgirQi1oDMC&printsec=frontcover&dq=vegetation+climate&sig=ACfU3U2YZnCT2_M7jfZLZElOzEZ9ljgm8w#PPA89,M1
I wonder what the odd id in the link means, but appart from this it is a nice introductory book about plant-climate interaction.
Well, living on the forest floor gives plants a lot of access to the fumes of decaying matter from the canopy above and also to much higher CO_2 levels. I don't know whether this says anything about Slashdot but with some suspension of disbelief one might find some truth in his statement.
I mean, I admire these plants living with all these hardships - low light, the stink. I just hope they make good use of the CO_2.
Je me souviens.

While I like the format of the news I receive here, the implementation of the commenting system leaves MUCH to be desired. I can easily see how it'd piss people off. (mostly people that need to get out more, but still)
Oh, and yes, go nuts flaming me with "comments" (which is about all it is, and it's lucky to qualify as a comment in most cases, unfortunately). You're comment will be +5 and mine will be -1. Luckily, even if NASA devoted all their employed brain-power for an entire year, I still don't think we could find a way for me to give a fuck less.
Unfortunately, it would seem many of these "slashdotters" seem to gain personal validation by being having "popular" comments.
But my opinion aside... exactly how is the moderation system adding value to this site or anyone's lives?
No really? Serious question!

While I very seldom post to this site I do enjoy following it closely for both the news and the unusually high quality of many posts. That being said, I've found the recent inclusion of idle material into the main page to be disconcerting in the extreme. The fact that slashdot boasts a robust filtering system isn't enough on it's own to justify the repeated posting of material that fails to inform, inspire, or otherwise positively influence anything. I think many of the development staff's goals behind idle's inclusion in the main stream might be better addressed through a slashdot blog or somesuch (i.e. just how much crap the mod staff is regularly subjected too). If the goal was purely to break into the intertube's massive lolcat/political rant market, I think the slashdot team needs to understand that they will be sacrificing what has become a very respected position in the web community. As it stands now, I would be less likely to refer a collegue to check out slashdot as a news source, simply because worrying about their reading "cocsuckers" in the first story they might happen accross isn't something I'm going to subject myself too.
**insert favorite profound quotation here**
I find the disagree mail interesting, I'm surprised that it's been so poorly received by the 'community'. Placed in quotes because I fall into the group that occasionally visits slashdot and almost never leaves comments. (This might be my first.) It would be nice to read the section without all the redundant (ha! slashdot word used +1) complaining about a complaints section.
Bungie started posting the funny emails they get from people who get banned from Halo 2 and 3. Some were just sad, because if they were really how the person thinks, then I imagine that going through life is pretty difficult for them. I feel the same for some of these. (Really. I'm serious!)
If the redirect is in place I'm not seeing it. I know DNS info takes awhile to propagate, but I've found Godaddy get the word around pretty quick. I'll check a bit later. If someone knows a public dns server that has picked this up perhaps you can post it here.

As far as canceling ID's go, why not? My suggestion to Slashdot for a feature would be just that, a feature that lets a user say "I've had it" and turns in and cancels their user number, that number will consequently be allowed re-assignment to the next Slashdot user that comes along, might give me a shot at a 2,3,4 or 5 digit user ID someday :-)
Actually if Slashdot was feeling capitalist, maybe detect if that ID is 2,3,4 or 5 digits and offer them for sale using a price that's dependent on the number itself (lower or "cool" numbers such as 666 or 1234 go for higher prices...)

Really, he is just expressing his existential angst. Aren't we all going somewhere to learn about hockey in our own way? Yet we wander about in lonely, unfriendly desolation.
No sir, you are not just some idiot. You are the quintessential idiot that represents humanity's great mortal struggle with meaninglessness.
I think it's broken, and I have excellent karma. On the other hand I am an anarchist, so I think every authoritarian system is "broken".
Beyond that, I fail to see anything remarkable in the alleged "hate mail". They represent very legitimate points-of-view even if we do not share them. In all, I see this as a feeble attempt to push hitcount.
On the plus side, it is good to see the editors faithfully reflect their audience: they can be slashtards too!

I'm sure most other hockey fans are probably much more intelligent. Maybe even all eight of you.
I mean, seriously, *hockey*? What next, beach lacrosse? Full-contact fly fishing? Jai alai? World championship fooseball? Intramural underwater pole vaulting? Indoor soccer?
I wouldn't even bet money (without checking) that there'd be information about hockey on hockey.com, much less on slashdot.org.

You're confusing desire for a higher ideal and the gutter reality of human nature. So what the parent company has blessed this? Since when is Slashdot some sort of flagship for proper behavior or even known outside of the tech crowd? It's their company, they can do what they want and the market will reward actions accordingly. Maybe they compiled statistics showing how popular the competition is for funny modded posts. And last I checked a clear percentage of tech people are socially stunted, part of the mass appeal to come here. (Cough, cough, not me of course)
How are people being abused? There's a hot button word - I fail to see how ending up as fodder for what is clearly meant as satire qualifies as abuse. Humor is often all about ridicule, stupidity, and yes, quite often completely juvenile behavior, whether or not it's fair or mature is beside the point. Hence movies like Dodge Ball, a true pinnacle of achievement, get made and make money.
I would love to see this same profiling done for comments posted to my local TV news website. It's truly scary to see what people post: someone has a horrible freeway accident and a commenter posts something to the effect of 'hell yes, cool, a dead person, he deserved it because my microsecond skim of a sensationally covered news item suggests it to me'.
So far, the rest of these blew. This one had me laughing.
