  1. Re:Cisco's Life Lesson - Maybe not. on Cisco Products Have Backdoors · · Score: 4, Interesting

If it is necessary to have a backdoor, it should only be enabled temporarily via a switch/hardware button (in the case that the admin password was forgotten).

I.e. in order to get in through the backdoor, you need to hold down a button for 10 seconds, and the login will be enabled for the next 2 minutes (which should be enough time to change the admin pw if it is forgotten). This would require that the site be physically secure; however would prevent those from remotely accessing the backdoor (unless someone is actually there to hit this 'switch).

A good way of chunking 'a string of thousands of 1s and 0s' would be simply to convert it to Hexidecimal. A string of 1024 bits can easily be compacted into 64 hexadecimal characters. Maybe if you're lucky you'll have it spelling things like DADA D00D F00D 1234

Chances are it won't be that easy, but you get the idea..

Similarly, most people thing their fingers are only capable of counting to 10. But how many of us think to use our fingers to count in binary to reach 1024 (2^10) possible values?

It actually does prevent Jamming.. although not 100% immune, it definitely should be able to prevent jamming by those pocket things, as they would not be able to generate enough power to jam a DSSS/FHSS signal.

The Direct Sequence Spread Spectrub avoids jamming by using such a wide band that it would take a shitload of power to jam such a wide spectrum.

Frequency hopping prevents jamming by making the frequency change every few milliseconds, as a result, if a particular frequency gets jammed, only a few milliseconds of data need to be resent.

  17. Re:jammers on Cell-Phone Wars · · Score: 2, Informative

FYI, it is my understanding that Spread Spectrum technologies, such as CDMA (Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum) and Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum over GSM are designed to prevent jamming.

Spread Spectrum was developed in WWII specifically for that purpose. Only recently were the documents declassified for use in such systems.

All CDMA phones should be able to avoid jamming, and GSM carriers who make use of frequency hopping should also be able to avoid this.
