Well, bear with me this time. I clicked on the "Google" logo today, and the first "news release" in the results is this page. From which I take this part:
If all goes according to plan, the Large Hadron Collider, a gigantic particle accelerator underground near Geneva, could re-create the very moment 13 billion years ago when scientists believe a tremendous explosion known as the "big bang" created the universe.
Now you see that and what do you think? If the experiment is "successful" they will re-create a "tremendous explosion"! No wonder why people is a bit scared of those experiments.
As Google base for funding themselves, advertisement pays a lot for technological advances. This type of events, although as you say are a "waste", they use resources from companies that would never put their money on automotive or clean energy development, to work for them.
Look how much money the tobacco industry put on F1 for a long time.
Check on f1.com, Ferrari has AMD, Alice (Italian telco), Acer, etc. Sauber (BMW), has Intel, Credit Suisse (Financial institution) and Syntium (Pharmaceuticals) among others. McLaren? It comes with a big Vodafone sticker on the side and also Santander (yet another bank) among many others.
Waste? Well, I don't know, but I think it's a good way to push technology wisely using money from other investors.
I'd go for thinking that nowadays accessories are the power hungry devices. As you mentioned LCDs, but particularly flashes are really power consuming, specially is you want a really fast recycling time. Moreover, other devices like personal printing devices, which come with several moving parts and drain batteries pretty quick.
So what I think they want to do, is to avoid having batteries for the printer, the flash, the camera it self and other devices, but having a centralized battery, like laptops and USB devices work right now.
Given that I don't like EBay, I must say that that's mainly the main reason I don't use Google Products (or whatever name it has now). It's amazing the amount of results aiming to unreal prices of 0.01 dollars you get when you try to look for something there.
If I could talk to Google, I'd like to know that I can block undesired sites in my product search, permanently!.
Since I'm pretty sure, there aren't enough available spaces for everyone. I'd say that not charging while you park, will only increase the fight over the reservations, even though people is not sure is going, but "just in case".
Your scheme seems interesting, but I'd think, you'd have to be either charged for the reservation, started to be charged as soon as you reserve or penalized if you don't use your reserved parking.
Sounds like a fairly good reason. I have two routers, a Netgear and a Linksys. Netgear has a great firmware from my point of view, but sometimes locked up, and I found it was connections through the wireless. I now use the Netgear as the wired gateway and the linksys as a wireless gateway, which goes through the netgear to access internet.
Since then, I haven't had to reboot the netgear again, and I think it was because of the "many connections" problem you are talking about.
Wait, so in the future, instead of throwing ice cubes to the oceans to reduce global warming, we will be running power grids? I hope they don't cause another ice age after freezing the poor underground creatures:(
There's also something I cannot understand. So, if they concentrate light on the borders, yet, light passes through, why not stacking them until no light passes, and use all the concentrated energy at the borders.
If there is still light crossing, isn't still a way of keep re-concentrating it using the same material?
Yes, I don't know who modded the parent "insightful" when I was probably a troll. I've been hunting a small, lightweight laptop for a long time. But I don't want to pay US$1300+ for something I'm sure I'm not going to use at full.
The closest I found to be a good match to what I wanted is the HP tx2000z. And, although it can be found (with coupons and stuff) for around $900, they all come with vista, and the screen drivers are nowhere around. In consequence, you need a powerful processor that heats up and drains your battery just to run vista (and for the 900 I'd at least expect to use the touch screen). (Note that the tx2000 is heavier, 2kg+ ).
Can you get a 13" Acer for US$500? Please point me there!
If I can get something that is around 1 or 1.5 kg, that I can carry around without the big bulk of "beefed" computers that come in in regular 15" screen footprints, that are heavy, and annoying to carry around everywhere. I'm going to be there to buy it.
I don't need outstanding processing capabilities, as I need portability. If I need to run intensive simulations using Matlab, I remotely login into a powerful desktop computer and run them. I'm not expecting having a portable computer for doing something that does not require of my active interaction. I really want a budget computer I can carry around, without having to have half of my backpack wasted carrying such "powerful" device I don't need.
As a native Spanish speaker, I always find interesting people that know and try to speak Spanish to me in the US. We both know that we try to, and understand the other.
I think most important of all, is that learning a foreign language and practicing it, makes you also understand what they go through while trying to communicate with you. Some people lack courtesy of such effort only replying with sometimes offensive sentences like "Speak English". So at the end, it doesn't really matter what language people want to learn, but to understand that communicating in other language sometimes is difficult and learn to appreciate that effort.
BTW, It is really nice to find among the American engineers that Spanish might be a good option.
Why waste so much time and money to come to such obvious conclusion which everybody knows?
So we pedantic nerds can show some evidence and support on their faces whenever the bastard plays with them and come back crying to us to tell us the story as the "friend" we always going to be?
Sorry, I have to let that one out, feels a bit better now.
The logical conclusion would be to ban education for all non-US citizens
That may be a solution, do you think that will increase the population of Americans in technical careers? In my opinion, it's simple because I, myself, have try to convince Americans to stay for grad school, and the answers are all similar:
"Why would I stay in grad school, if I have to pay for tuition, and if I get a scholarship, I'm going to be paid 30k a year less than what I can be paid at the industry with just a bachelors degree?"
I think, that would certainly converge to more taxes to allow good students in grad school to be well paid, and I don't know if that's something close to happen.
I think this is a critical point to many Americans, and believe me, that as a foreign, I've been trying to get them for grad school, and they just refuse to.
I was about to write that. The answer is in the same summary. "Where are all the Einsteins?", well, Einstein was an immigrant. However, these days, an immigrant is more some kind of threat to the US government. So where are all of them? Where they are accepted.
Technology mayors are not being occupied by US people, and therefore, foreign people is taking those opportunities. Unluckily, some people thinking that immigrants are just taking jobs from US citizens, are sending all the prepared foreign people back to their countries. So, all the money invested by the US companies, US government in research grants and education is flying out to other countries, where they can find jobs without passing through lotteries and security clearances.
US should look forward to a way of keeping the talent they invested on.

Then, why would you use a metallic case and screws? Isn't that counter intuitive to the fact that you need lighter components?

"With gas prices these days, I'm sincerely hoping Santa better brings something good this Christmas"
Darn! Now, I'm getting nothing for my bad spelling! I need a coffee!
I don't know what's the fight for. What make you guys thing there's still oil up there? How do you think Santa funds it's business?
With gas prices this days, I'm sincerely hope Santa better brings something good this Christmas.
Now, wasn't that a good enough prediction then? It's in fact a "real-time prediction system".
I haven't read those comments yet. But I'm pretty sure ATT sells cards and services for computers too, I think those people may do it.

I think it would make a difference also, that if by commuting with your laptop you could use the carpool lane too.

You almost tricked me, until I read "viagra". This is /.! What would you use that for?

You don't have permission to access future...
Oh! But there IS something a "free computer" can teach you, and that's loyalty to the brand. That's probably the main thing I can think of right now.
You must agree with your GP that that's certainly short and concise.
On the other hand, It seems to be a genuine innovative idea using Morse for server names.
No, no, no... you missed the point, they wanted to say "ONLY 200% more"
