One of the coolest things to happen with the volcano cam recently is that night has gotten slightly more interesting. For the first couple weeks, all you could see at night was a dark noisy image. In the last couple days, a faint glow from the magma in the dome has been visisble.
My NEC drive isn't the best 8x on the market, but I'm _amazed_ at how quiet it is.
You take that back! Your 2500A (as well as the one that's currently silently backing up a movie in my computer) is the best one on the market at the moment, as far as I can tell. I read a ton of reviews before I bought it and it stood out as the best as well as one of the cheapest.
I haven't been to the new location ("in" fred myers? I will have to check this out), but I can completely agree with you on trying to compete with the other computer retailers on that road.. I cannot even begin to try to count the ones I know in my head.. I knows its upwards of ten, and for the most part they're selling the exact same stuff and competing with each other (and the internet) for price.
I bought some cool stuff at Vetco when they were in the same parking lot at Active.. Some old AT keyboard cords that worked perfectly as midi cable (which goes for 4-5x the price at and musicians store..boo), endless amounts of reasonably priced audio adapters, and some other stuff.. I thought they'd gone the way of the dodo, so I'm excited to go check them out. Hopefully they haven't completely gone to the new computer business..
It should be obvious to most people that the price demanded by microsoft is far to high for what you get. Office is ~$400 for five or six programs.. These programs were not that complex in the first place. I know I'd much rather program a program like Word then some of the harder parts of the Windows OS ( ~$150).. Add onto this that the programs in the suite haven't been changed by much in the last 10 years.
If I was running a company, it would seem quite obvious that I could have my employees do exactly the same things with OpenOffice (free) or Corel Office (much less $$ than MS) and my company could save hundreds of dollars per employee.
Even though CDs are cheap, I don't think that the technology is as affordable as it needs to be for most people to adopt it yet.
Hmm.. I don't know what your definition of "most people" is, but I recall seeing a statistic a few years ago saying that a huge percentage of computers come with CD-RW drives. Today I think the CD-RW standard is, well, pretty much standard among any computer purchased from a retailer like Dell.
The "expense" of adding a drive to a PC without one is rather negligable. A quick search of Newegg.com (a company I have full confidence endorsing, considering I just bought $400+ of products there last week) shows that the cheapest Lite-On CD-ROM drive is $24. For less than double that price you can get a Lite-On CD-RW drive that burns at 48x. If you're really price concious then you can usually find CD-RW drives (often rebranded lite-ons) for $20-30 after rebate in many sunday ads. Media cost for CD-Rs is usually less than the average floppy and storage is hundreds of times greater.
Although I really hope this does well, I know there will be a large percentage of "diehards" who will never accept any sort of progress in guitar technology. Look through review sites like harmony-central and you will see many people who are very similar to extreme audiophiles in their oddities. They think that anything digital will sound like shit and they'll never change their mind.
As far me, I'm really interested to see how this goes. With all the noise introduced in analog effects pedals the business has been needing something like this just to get a clear signal.
From what I've seen and heard Carmack is quite good at making clean and fast code. Granted, he may bump quality up in compensation, but that only says positive things about his code. Look at the Doom3 ALPHA. I can run it on my 750mhz Athlon.. Granted, its slow as shit, but with a few tweaks it could be about playable.. Now keep in mind this was only an alpha build designed to run on one specific machine for demo purposes.
I shudder to think how much good drool has slipped into my keyboard reading hundreds of similar headlines over the years.. Put it in a CD/DVD size (or smaller) format that is cheap, (re)writeable, and durable (Right now all our opticle formats leave something to be desired in this department). Until then STFU. I'm still waiting for a DVD[+|-]R format whose media costs less than $0.50 a disc and can be burned in less than ten minutes.
So please, until something like this is available at Newegg spare us.
I have started trying to collect CPU's from past computers, mostly from x86 computers. Although I can't turn them on and play with them like a C64, they're fun to look at, small, and easy to display.
I expect computers will soon become very collectable since they fit the profile of other collectables: 1) Used in youth, aka "glory days" 2) Often disposed of because they were "useless" 3) Now that their userbase is collecting extra income they'll go looking for those little reminders of their younger years.
Worked for GI Joe's, comics, etc.
PS: If you want to make a donation to the CPU collection I'd be more than happy to take them. I'm really interested in anything and don't mind paying postage. Beastofexmoor@mailftpNOSPAM.com
I heard a proponant on the radio and I believe he said that the feds, although not happy about it, would leave nevade mostly alone if they legalize it.
We'll see. I hope it passes. Not because I want to smoke pot (hell, I'm 21 and haven't ever had drink of alchohol), but because I think its an issue that really should really be up to the states themselves.
The reason that IE succeeded is that they delivered an slightly better product than netscape at a time when people were starting to use the net at record numbers.
When MS tried to convert a world firmly entrenched in MP3s to their WMA format they got basicly nowhere. I guess it has had moderate success in competing with Real's product line, but that's really only because Real's software cannot run 2 seconds without crashing on most systems I've been around.
My prediction: Unless they can blow PDF out of the water (which they could do), MS's new format will be something you use once or twice a month max.
People have tried to fight progressive technological evolution for ages and it has yet to ever work once. Any country making laws forcing its citizens to live behind the times is only hurting itself. What if panama had outlawed the original telephone because it hurt the post office? Granted, Voice IP isn't quite as drastic a step, but it is progress and it will succeed on its own merit, laws or no laws.

This reminds me of Roger Ebert's review of the movie, which is one of the funnier reviews I've ever read. You can find it here.
To summerize he, "Hated hated hated hated hated this movie."

Indeed. If I could run Scorched Earth in a window in XP I would be quite a happy man..
"I'm still waiting for some hardcore body piercer to turn his penis into an 802.11 antenna."
Slash birth control?
"If I didn't say at least one idiotic thing per posting, I wouldn't be me."
I think someone just found a new sig!

I tried connecting to port 80 and got nothing.. I give up..
I never was a decent hacker though.
At least you didn't live in the south.. Their family trees down there are twice as complicated as your whiteboard.
You've obviously never tried to grab the newest oscar screener SVCD DVD rip the day after it was sent out..
It comes in quite useful at time like these..
What the hell were you selling?

This proves that being single is definately your safest option.
...Whether or not my brother in law is the CEO of FMC may depend on whether or not you can give me an FTP site with the latest build of Doom3... ;)

Carmack, I'm looking in your direction...

This man has a point.
(look at my username if you're not getting the joke)
(although mine come from being Straight Edge)

Its true and as simple as it sounds. There's no self-service allowed in Oregon.

Here's the link!
We'll see if they're able to get it into an upgrade of their current firmware.. Even if they don't its still quite exciting news for the future.
