Seems like laws and bills and crap should logically go through the Supreme Court *before* being enacted.. This passing laws which are unconstitutional and then having them in effect for years and years until they finally make it to be judged *while they are still enforcing them* seems pretty stupid from the whipped persons point of view. Yea yea yea.. it would take years to pass crap and the backlog would be crippling.. and you say that like its a bad thing...
I think you should ask for a basement server room and office. You can use some of the natural underground cooling to cut some costs but also include plenty of vent/clean/ac. Make it twice as big as you think you need..it will probably end up being too small in 10 years even if you do that. Next.. have underground corridors and wiring races to strategic places in the building. Make the corridors comfortable to walk through an the races at least twice what you need as well. Sell it for security, sell it for saving topside space , and sell it for the geo-thermal savings as well as ease of upgradeability of infrastructure. But make *sure* you have plenty of elbow room. You dont want crawl spaces, you want corridors.
I did the same thing with a BBS back in the day. Not quite as large, kudos on that, but still all out of my pocket, all for free, all with no ads. Your post hits the nail on the head. I wish it could be modded higher than 5 as *this* is not only whats wrong with the internet but the monitizing of everything. Great post.
With the endless parade of cash from Bernanke currently scheduled to the tune of $40 BILLION per month indefinitely, somehow, I think these poor abused banks will squeek through this. Hell.. they could buy every damn tech manufacturer then make them custom build giant golden cow shaped HFT machines the size of the statue of liberty and then still have enough bailout cash to fill every Olympic pool in the US with $100 bills.
Ya know.. I used to be kinda worried about the whole environment, global warming thing... but as time goes on and I keep seeing sheeple brainwashed into stabbing themselves in the eye with the same political an religious asshattery.. Ive come to root for these "planetary emergencies". So.. is it time yet? (looks out window) damn. sigh.. no..not yet.
I gave DDG a fair shake for a few months but ended up with a lot of spammy results a lot of times and didnt find what I wanted all the time. I do like their ! searches tho and I keep them in my browser search list specifically for !whois and a few other ! searches. I hate it as much as the next nerd, but google is king of search and gets me where I need to go. I do know and remember always that the almighty google is also all-tracking.
I think it would be more useful to let the non-coders take a day with a good programmer and have the programmer explain what they are doing, why, and how. I would make sure you dont expect anything productive on those days and for a bonus you might get that introverted programmer in all of us to open up a bit. If having the non-techs understand and appreciate whats going on is the object, it would seem this is the safest way to go about it without opening up your code base to security and stability hell.
Who do you trust? That is the real question. We are a stones throw away from every aspect of our lives being recorded and monitored. Who do you trust with this information? Not who has the right to it, not what is public or private spaces, who would you hand your life to and say..here..have this.. everything I do, everywhere I go, everything I say, every dime I spend.. have this information of me. Do you trust the police? Would you readily hand this information to them? How about your state government? Maybe the FBI, CIA, NSA or any other 3-letter agency? Do you trust them with every detail of your life? Or maybe the Federal Govt? Do you trust them to use this information wisely and not abusively? The fact is every one of these entities and probably more will very soon have every piece of this information at their fingertips. So the question remains.. who do you trust? And it is being answered for us.
Everyone is missing a critical point here.. you have family. You cant just bug out. If you are a 1/2 decent person you think about your family first, you turn the F around and find out who is following you, why, and do whatever it is they want to keep your family safe..regardless of the personal consequences.
Its the blurring of lines of what is work time and what is private time due to the always connected world we have become addicted to. When your "master" can summon you 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, no matter where you are.. guess what.. they will.
Has the "We The People" website had one iota of influence on ANY issue?
I suspect the whole purpose was to get some good touchy-feely-see-I-care press for launching the site, not to actually do anything substantive but pat people on the head and continue to do whatever the hell they want anyway.
It is not that abstaining makes you any more dangerous.. its that abstaining means you arent part of the herd that can be easily monitored and controlled. To that I say.. (Jim Carrey voice) Scarahheewwww Yaahheeeewww..
I left a bloated University bureaucracy and there was nothing I could do or say that would have made one iota of difference in the political warfare that was the IT Depts. I could have ranted on about the mismanagement and waste and it would have been good chuckle-fodder for the Division head as he went to his next meeting with the president to spend another million on the buzz word gotta have of the day. I took the high road said almost nothing in my exit.
Now.. if you are in an organization that gives a crap..thats a different story and they might use the exit as a tool but imho, any company over a thousand or so..its just a waste of time and paper to push.
Unbundle the endless parade of commercials and then maybe I would be interested. We only do Netflix at home. Im vacationing/visiting for the month and wow.. the commercial to program ratio on cable is pretty abusive once you break loose from cable for a while.
I quit my FB 2 or so years ago but the wife is on 10+ hours/day. She has around 900 followers of a parrot gift shop and parrot rescue help site she promotes and works on FB. Every single thing FB has done in the last year or so has made her cuss. (all according to her) The timeline is crap. They made it so people cant see her posts **even when they want to** and even more crazy.. when you actually freaking PAY to PROMOTE posts still..still..not all your followers are even freakin ALLOWED to see them unless the visit your page.
Every decision they have made has limited the interactions between people instead of making it easier to interact. To me, it appears to be their attempt to choke the audience and force the monitization of the interactions. It is simply pissing people off and if they dont stop soon, someone WILL come up with a better mousetrap.
You know how to boil a frog..you put him in cold water an slowly raise the temperature until he's boiled.. well.. if they didnt want us to know this, we wouldnt. Its just another step in boiling the frog, and I gotta tell ya.. Im seein bubbles down here..
"You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes."
I took the red pill 4 years ago. I was a senior tech drone at a university and could have easily spent another 25 years to retirement skating in the tech side of academia. I woke up one day at 43 years old, looked back, and realized my life had been stolen. I had spent 5/7th of my existence doing things I didnt give a shit about while waiting for the weekend to cram my life into.
I decided enough was enough and I walked away.
I took my savings and retirement and got rid of every debt I owed and bought some land. I started a small business and got my monthly living expenses under $1000. Im at about $600 right now and hope to go lower.
I built a house by hand..still working on it, but its all mine, every stinking stick of wood.
Ive got a ways to go as Im working towards doing the farm thing..but thats my path. Decide what yours is and follow it. Maybe it is to be an employee, maybe that fulfills you.. but I suspect deep down that no intelligent person really wants to work until they are old, used up. I suspect they are just doing it because they are afraid of the unknown and afraid of losing their security. The question is, is security worth looking back on your life to realize you never really lived?
No, its not easy. No, it is not fun. No it is not secure. But yes...yes it is freedom and hell yes it is living. At least for me.
Is anyone else tired of the never-ending upgrade/version parade? Maybe Im just getting old but dam.. every year upgrade Office, upgrade Windows, upgrade your phone, upgrade your laptop, get a new tablet, get a new tv, get a new car, f*** me running its like Im your personal money spigot and all you need to do is have some 1/2 baked mass produced crap and Im supposed to get in line to shower you with money. Screw you. Im tired of chasing the mess. Now get off my lawn.
I think we can all agree that the US and Israel are behind the nasty bugs going around in Iran's nuclear program. What I'm not seeing people putting together is that there are more than Iranian consequences here. Russia is into building these things for billions of dollars. They have a heavily vested interest here. If you fear the hackers in Iran and our infrastructure, then I suggest you consider for a moment the scope and scale of the Russian cyber hacking skills, which may be for hire, and realize we are yanking a tigers tail here.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10000872396390443890304578006702760267388.html The Fed said it would buy mortgage-backed securities, or MBS, for an indefinite period to bolster the economy. Smells like shoveling money at the derivatives to me.. and who holds a metric fuckton of those I wonder...

Grab whats important and let the format tornado take care of the rest.
Dont look at the surveillance network, the military complex, the prison system, the food system, the healthcare system, the fiscal clusterfuck..
Oh shiny.. look beer.

Sadly there was a time when I was surprised by these type things.. the last 5-10 years or so.. not so much.

What's the public policy analogue of jumping out of the pot, though...
That is a good question..

Oil prices have everything to do with futures speculation and nothing to do with availability.
