You make a much-needed point on slashdot. There are tons of people who get upset when we support innovative tracking systems or clever ways to surveil employees, because to them fear of the government's wielding these tools precludes any reasonable celebration of their innovativeness. It's like most of my personal positions as a Libertarian. I believe the homeless and the disabled should receive SOME form of aid; I just don't think it should come from my pocket at the point of a gun. That doesn't mean it won't come from my pocket at some point. Just like this tracking thing. I support my right to track where my kid is going, and only the paranoid and misguided or the slippery-slope-ists would equate that with some sort of 'big brother' control.
We are taking a road trip next week for spring break, and I will bring my cell/camera/laptop...
the thing is, these items SUPPORT having a good time on the road. I agree with you completely.
I plug in the laptop (DON'T FORGET, people, to lock that thing to the desk when you leave the room) at night and jack in to upload the day's pictures off the digital camera. (god bless my parents' AOL account)
I use the web to find restaurants in our area, attractions to see, and driving directions to our next stop.
The cell is an obvious one, so I can be contacted by either my friends in other cars when we caravan or by others who will have no other way to reach me (of course, in an emergency).
If you roll over the links, you can see the difference. I don't think people make a whole lot of money off of them. Some sites, like Techbargains probably do.
To register for Amazon's program, go to associates.amazon.com for their "associate" program. That's what they actually call it.
What the hell? You insert Amazon Affiliate links into your recommendations in everyday, informal communication suggesting a movie??? Do you do this in conversation, too?
THAT IS AMAZING. I remember that specific episode, and even though I was 8 or 9 when I saw that show and had no idea who Yeardley Smith was, now that you remind me, I remember that and can somehow tell that that was her. Maybe it's just the power of suggestion, but damn.
If your store is truly dependent on being able to survive in this scenario, there would be a market for a battery-powered device that would scan the card and debit from it (I assume using the cellular network). It would seem possible looking at this picture.
The thing is, and everyone on Slashdot seems to forget this, you DON'T have to break the css to copy a dvd!!!! Your player decodes it when you play it! Copy it with the CSS!
The term is actual malice. It means the person who made the statement had to have knowledge of the falsity and have operated with reckless disregard for the truth. This is necessary for public figures or corporations to prove libel.
I was under the impression that first post usually signified the first top-level post in a thread. Anyway, we're way off-topic. I didn't realize that people actually cared about getting the first reply to a reply to a topic.
Yeah, but from the other side of the fence, I read Slashdot every day, and have for years (less than you though:)) and the second I saw that, I thought "wasn't that on/. like a year a go or something?" It was kind of annoying wondering if this was new news or if it was a really old repeat. I think you would have been annoyed if you had seen it last time it got posted. Now, I am not one to criticize, and this is a free site, so I don't mean to suggest that anything should change, just that it's a little annoying.
Hard Drives on portable MP3 players - $ 21.00 / GB !!! 21 dollars!
Damn! So my iPod would have cost over $1000 (Canadian). The worst part is that they probably will tax it based on the marketing Gigabyte, instead of the Real Gigabyte...
No, no, no. What we NEED is to REQUIRE moderators to view at -1 threshold, flat, most recent first. Then, it all gets modded at an even rate (assuming constant moderation)...
Some members have reported attempts to gain access to their personal information through email solicitations that are falsely made to appear as having come from eBay. These solicitations will often contain links to Web pages that will request that you sign in and submit information. At eBay, we identify these as 'spoofed' emails or Web sites.
We encourage you to be very cautious of emails that ask you to submit personal information such as your credit card number or your eBay password.
To be sure that you are signing into a genuine eBay Web site, look at the Address/Location area of your browser. At an eBay.com sign-in or log-in page, the URL (link) that appears in the Address/Location area of your browser will begin with "http://cgi.ebay.com/" or "http://scgi.ebay.com". Please pay close attention to all characters in the address, including the forward slash (/) that follows "ebay.com". Even if the Address/Location includes the word "ebay", it may not be a genuine eBay Web site. If you receive or suspect you have received such an email, do not respond to it or click the links. Immediately send a copy of it to spam@ebay.com.
If you have any doubt as to whether or not the website you are on is an official eBay web page, please visit our Account Security page for more complete information on the URLs used on eBay web pages.

Who the fuck has 220GB of personal data? Seriously, for the cost of backing up that much porn, you can just go down to the store and buy the legit DVDs. While you're at it, you can stop off at the record store and buy some albums so you can re-rip your MP3s.
Are you kidding? 220GB (100 full-length porno DIVXs and 600 MP3 albums) would cost $300 to back up, $600-800 if you needed redundancy. Even if you got the porn for $15 DVD (cheap) and the albums for $10 (really cheap), you would be paying $7500 to buy the media.
Yeah, it sure is gonna be mislabeled by 15 people. See, first some dude thinks it's would be cool to save Max Payne as Halo_PC_Beta334.zip and throw it on their server. Some idiot says "Hmm, Halo, there's a game I don't have on my PC..." and downloads it. The download (to their shared folder of course) finishes the next morning, but he doesn't even remember to open the file til two days later. At that point, he may or may not decide to delete it. Even if he does, it was served for a whole day as Halo. And people DON'T delete the fake crap out of their shared folders.

electricity is basically free (as in beer),
Why do you have to qualify? How could electricity be free (as in speech)? I mean, I suppose the source code IS freely available.

With no karma bonus because of how offtopic we are.

Similar trend?

Actually, at $1,088 each, 0.1% of the population would have had to see it about 136 times.
Ah, oops. My bad. I forget about these dual-LNB things. :)

DirecTivos can already do this. They can record one program off the digital feed and one off the analog going in the back... both at the same time.

I can't imagine I'm going to get first post on this.
You posted a reply to a comment and thought you might get first post? Your low user id betrays you!

Problem solved.
