We work in an enviroment where the mindset is "See what you can do..." I'm always trying to find the best way of programming something. Creativity keeps me sane. I look at the programs I did 5 years ago, dreadful, I'm ashamed I did them so crappily (hey the word works). But at that time I had no clue as to what I was doing.
I just had to go back and add another "feature" to one of my programs today, one I wrote 4 months ago, damn that's sweet code. It took me 5 minutes to do the change because of how efficiently I wrote it. I love having the ability to do what needs to be done. If it breaks, I fix it. How? I don't know, I'll come up with something.
Now we get atleast 3 or 4 charity mailings a week. That's not a lot by some standards, but still annoying.
We get mail about dogs with their eyes gouged out, "Please help Scruff!"...hell shoot the damn thing to put it out of it's misery. How much does a bullet cost?
"All ERP solutions suck. And whichever one you choose sucks worst." - the grass is always greener..
SAP, PeopleSoft, Bann...and the list goes on, sure it will all do want you want eventually. Oh, and once you figure it out and get it 'stable', it's time to upgrade. Upgrading can be just as hard as doing the initial installation. If you wait too long between upgrades, the jump in functionality is huge.
I'd love to see an Open-Source alternative to the proprietary (sp?) ERP's. I'm sure it is possible, but these are massive systems. Who's up to the challenge?
Here's a quick PHB ERP spec:
1. Link MM, PS, PP, SD, FI, HR, and Maintenece, in to 1 cohesive software package. 2. Have everything integrated and scalable.
3. Allow for extra Modules to be added at anytime.
4. Make it Global.
Side notes:
Make sure it can handle, Millions of parts, millions of orders, millions of drawings, log all finacial records.
oh, and make it accessible from the Web, anywhere in the world, securely.
End-spec.
This is the overly simplified version, but that's basically ERP. I'm amazed how complex this dang software actually is. Just for Material Management, there's thousands of different setups for parts, and that's not talking about 'configured' parts.
Maybe some day we'll have an OSS solution, but does anyone really have the time to develop it?
Ah Animaniacs...the closest we've been to the classics for quite some time. I originally though Tiny toons was better, but Animaniacs is the best since the original Warner Bros. stuff.
Recipe for classic cartoons...
1. Slapstick comedy...for the kids 2. double entendre...for the adults
Animaniacs had an abundance of both. From the Jerry Lewis references, Mime bashing, wheel if morality, The GoodFeathers...I can go on and on.
This would be the way they got the masses to follow. It's the whole pleasure/pain thing. They see the pain in the ass of not having these "special abilities", so they give up the pleasure of free will.
1. For all the Trekkies out there, start recording a season for your own personal use, DVD's will keep better than VHS. It's being broadcasted, we're paying for it through the products we buy. No harm no foul.
2. God knows the Major networks show an made-for-tv movies/specials once and at the very most twice, if you don't get good copy you might never see it again. Example. back in the 80's my brother and I recorded the Kroft puppets (spelling/name may be off, sorry) when the did the "Ronny and Nancy Show". I re-watched that tape till it wore out, now I can't find a copy of it anywhere. If I had one of these, no problems.
Not everyone pirated movies, it's too much crap to deal with. Why would I want a wall covered with DVDs? I barely have enough space for the crap I got now. I don't need/want anymore. I'm sure there are people who feel the same way.
I saw something the other night on Discovery/TLC (whatever channel it was), they were showing the next 'replacement' rifle. It was a big-effin' gun, it shot exploding ammo as well as the normal stuff. The soldier had to set distance parameters for the exploding stuff, but it looked pretty affective.
My only worry with the newer stuff is the electronics durability in warfare. With the mechanical guns you had to worry about jams, the electronic guns only need a few circuits to fry. I didn't see if it had any redundancy (sp?), I would hope it does.
Fox News...that is the most biased right-winged news company anywhere. I'll watch it just to laugh at the ridiculousness (spelling?, oh the irony).
I also completely support the troops. The have job to do, even if I don't agree with it. They are good people caught in the middle. The war sucks, I just hope it ends quickly with as few as possible victims.

If the Canadians have the trees and know-how to ship us cheap lumber in the US, and not decimate their forests, I say more power to them.
I did hear something about the US and our forests a while back. Apparently we have more trees now than we did X number of years ago. I think X is greater than 50, but I'm not sure. This is because Loggers have to replace the forests they cutdown by replanting. Whether all this is hype or truth I do not know. But I though it was a cool idea anyway.
I hope there's some Lorax out there atleast.
"I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees. I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues. And I'm asking you, sir, at the top of my lungs"- he was very upset as he shouted and puffed- "What's that THING you've made out of my Truffula tuft?" -Dr. Suess
Ah, I think we have someone here who DOES see the big picture.
There are lots of times, at least in my experience, where it's not the programmer's fault in how the program works.
I've seen specs come down from higher-ups who have no idea what they are asking for. I'm a little bit luckier though. The analysts we have here tend to spot these problems long before I get to program. But occasionally some do slip through. I have loads of fun ripping these things to shreds. I feel like a professor at college with my little red pen. "Ah, wrong...can't do that! What does that say? etc, etc..."
Aside: That is also usually a good stall tactic. If I'm swamped with other projects, I'll send them a flurry of notes, overwell them with spec questions. It usually gives me a few days.
It's tough to think outside the box, when there is no box.
They disproved this, although is wasn't a True scientific study. It would take huge amount of air saturation for the gasoline to ignite.

His Monitor starts going nuts a few seconds before the cell phone rings. It's weird when you see it happen.

bad thoughts...
The guys in the Auto Shops have to deal with the same (l)user crap that IT people have.
Man, no matter what you choose to do with your life, there will always be stupid people around to F*&( with you.
Sean D.
or was it a camel.. I'm not sure
Yes sir, I like it!
You try so hard and all you got was this lousy 'Offtopic'. No appreciation for taste.
Sean D.
I was wondering if I'd see any quotes from that game.
This would be a lot nastier than a harddrive wipe.
With the wipe, you know it's all gone...just reload the backups.
With screwing the data...what's right? what's not?
That could truly be a costly virus...costly in many ways.

Hi, Ivan, that vaccuum cleaner you left is on the fritz again, it doesn't suck
English to Spanish....
Hi, Ivan, ese limpiador del vaccuum que usted dejó
está en el fritz otra vez, él no aspira.
Spanish back to English...
Hi, Ivan, that cleaner of the vaccuum that you left you are in the Fritz again, he does not aspire.
Close but not quite...
Microsoft will have it hands full.

That could be fun.....

I just went down to the change machine here at work and broke a $10. 8 Sacs and 8 quarters...a alot better than having 40 quarters in my pocket.
Plus the Vending machines don't spit them back out.
