Haha ok, I did see some people still claiming it was chance at the third cable but I thought the general trend of the conversation still leaned towards the ideas that it was not coincidence. I certainly didn't think it was coincidence at any rate. Now that there are 6 it should be pretty obvious the "tin foil hat" posts were the correct ones to all.:) I can see how you might have misinterpreted my OP as saying the chance that it was all an accident still existed though, but I assure you this was not my intent.
I would put a link on my website titled "want to know why you can't connect to thepiratebay.org?" that links to a brief explanation of the situation as well as a link to a proxy and a description of how to use it.:)
Hmm, I think you are a little too full of yourself. There is no disagreement here that the cables being cut/disabled is by accident and coincidence afaik and I never said that the one with power issues was unrelated, I was just clarifying this technicality since the title does indeed say "fifth cable cut." You'll have to forgive me for not knowing about the very first undersea cable being cut because as you have probably noticed in previous articles, the latest one where a cable was actually cut said it was the third while the one that claimed a fourth cable was cut was later corrected to "disabled."
I know there was a fourth cable article awhile back but there was an update that says the cable wasn't actually cut just taken offline due to power issues. http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/02/04/0158249 So that would make this the 4th cable cut, not 5th right? It is just a technicality though.
Ah that is a good point. Unfortunately I have not seen any comprehensive comparisons of this kind so I guess the best you can do is look at the performance of the cpus and gpus separately and take a best guess.:/
Not really, they are meant for completely different purposes. In a rendering competition between the latest geforce and the latest quadro in maya or 3ds max or something, the quadro would completely obliterate the geforce, but in the gaming scene the geforce would have a definite and very noticeable advantage. People who spend over $2k on their workstation card probably aren't too interested in how well it runs crysis though, hehe.
High end gaming cards specialize in pure speed while high-end workstation cards specialize in extreme accuracy and precision is the basic answer. They are incredibly accurate with FSAA and sub-pixel precision. Workstation graphic cards also have other features such as overlay plane support which really helps in things like 3dsmax.
I have an old original gameboy from way back in the day, it still works for the most part but I wouldn't say indestructible because sound is broken.:/ I think it's a connection problem with the volume control because sometimes you can mess around with it and find a spot where it works.
Yeah I know what you mean, I didn't really notice the difference because my hardware runs the old source engine stuff so fast until I was doing tests. Still, it is a huge performance loss and I imagine less powerful systems would experience more difficulties with it.
In my experience, gaming in Vista caused noticeable performance hits in every game I tried. I lost a 5-ish fps in oblivion, and up to 40 or more in source engine games. I haven't tried in awhile so I don't know if it's gotten any better but that was one of the main reasons for me switching back to XP. I have not tried any of the latest games such as cod4 or crysis in vista. I also did not try the most recent source engine games in orange box which allegedly use DX10 to help speed up some of the stuff vista slowed down. As for gaming in linux, that's something I don't do much because I prefer to get the max performance I can and wine/cedega just don't quite cut it. I do, however, use linux for just about everything else.:)
Defcon: Everybody Dies by Introversion you mean?:D Which reminds me of another game by the same group that does not simulate what happens as a result of cyber attacks but allows you to play as the attacker: Uplink. It's also a very entertaining game though not entirely realistic.
Actually, I don't mind Steam DRM mostly because once I pay for the game it pretty much lets me do whatever I want with it. I can log on to steam from any computer and download and play any game I own rather than having a limited number of installs with a CD key or something. There's nothing particularly restricting about Steam other than you do need one copy of the game per person (can't have the same account logged in at two locations). Also, although the software used to be horrible, hard to use, and with really really slow download servers, it has since evolved into a much better program and the new Steam Friends stuff has pretty much replaced Xfire for me. On a side note, it's still pretty easy to pirate steam games if you want, but as usual you will get no online play except on cracked servers. This goes for pretty much all recent games though, heh.
Not that hard to infiltrate... ever been to 711chan.org? xD Also, just a pet peeve, why do they break up the article into 6 pages instead of just putting it all on one? >:P
Do these people think they can actually win any of those lawsuits? They have to realize that all those organizations have hordes of lawyer minions at their disposal that will beat them into a fiscal pulp!
There already is a plethora of third party maps. I especially recommend the Ren Test map which was created by one of the professional level designers from bethesda.
Did you play half life 2 episode 2 yet? I suspect aperture science will definitely be playing a role in future half life games.:) Here is a screenshot I made for ya... (spoilers warning)

That's interesting, and very odd. I've always found the number keyboard horribly slow and inefficient. If I had to write an entire novel with one of those I think I would feel much the same way about my thumbs as Ringo Starr did at the end of Helter Skelter! I am a college student and I use my cell phone quite often, but I usually call instead of texting. It's just not the same as a nice qwerty or dvorak with mechanical switches...
Now they can go questing and conduct raids against their greatest foes! In all seriousness though, this seems rather silly to me. Does this mean that people making their emo blogs on livejournal or something are going to demand compensation for the traffic they generate? The article speaks of IP, but the vast majority of blogs definitely don't deserve the "intellectual" part of it, hehe. Also, the whole point of these blogging sites is that they can make a profit, they wouldn't exist otherwise... The host is not going to give bloggers free hosting and *pay* them for their work as well. If someone has a popular blog, I suggest they host it themselves and make money off ads or something.
This is cool, being able to choose smart moves against a random opponent could have a lot of uses in enemy AI in other games too. The unpredictability of a human opponent has always been an issue when creating realistic AI. It always kind of bugged me that even in new advanced games like Crysis, enemies will sometimes move in the most stupid ways possible. The next generation of FPS AI could use something similar to this.
That's a really neat idea. If properly implemented, that would significantly expand wireless internet coverage to just about anywhere in the nation. It would definitely help for people who travel a lot. Still, the initial test failures such as not recognizing normal TV signals makes me wonder. If they could figure out how to properly detect regular TV and avoid it, this could be a definite advance in connectivity.
Actually, I'd want a smaller one. Faster clock speed and such do not matter on an ultraportable laptop, if I wanted that I'd be getting some giant 10lb Dell XPS or something. What would you do with it that required so much power? I actually thought the macbook air was too big when I first saw it and that mac should be focusing on overall size rather than just thickness. Now, if they made a macbook air with an 11" screen, that would be just about perfect.:) That could help extend battery life as well, which is another large concern for me when it comes to portability. My current laptop only gets about 3 hours of battery with wifi on and screen at full brightness.
Realistic NASA game, eh? I know how to do that... You are a low-mid level engineer. You job: design a space station. Someone higher up decides to make a tiny change, so you scrap the current design and restart from scratch. Repeat this over 9000 times, waste as much government funding as possible for the high score. Since everyone's work is made useless every time something is changed, why bother working at all? Play the built in solitaire and minesweeper minigames for extra fun! The less progress made the better.
Hey, the space shuttle works right? If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Who cares it's over 20 years old and still a prototype? Who cares that it uses equipment from the time of the dinosaurs!?
Sorry, I had to troll a bit. The real progress is being made by private companies these days and NASA is just old, bloated, and generally useless.

*waves hand* This is not the file sharer you are looking for. He can go about his business. Move along...
Why shouldn't it have warning labels? Haha, it's called social darwinism! I am in favor of the removal of all safety labels.

At least he didn't learn from Battlefield 2! Teammate hurt? Throw first aid packs at his face and all wounds are magically cured! :D
