They spend money on Athletics because Athletics makes money... at least football and basketball do, and at least at big sport schools. I went to UCLA, and while they spend millions on coaches and facilities, they make back WAY more than that in ticket sales, paraphernalia, and broadcast rights. Those profits add millions to the general school budget.
Of course, many schools (and it sounds like yours was one) see these huge profits and want a part of it... so they spend money to build up an athletics program, but fail to realize it is nearly impossible to break into the elite ranks these days.
Another sad but true fact is that a successful sports program brings in a LOT of money from alumni donors... the better a sports team does, the more the alumni will donate to the school.
Well I don't think it is too difficult to figure out why they have an exclusive deal with AT&T... because AT&T pays them a bunch of money (http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/06/19/what-att-pays-apple-for-the-iphone/)
I am sure part of the agreement to get AT&T to subsidize the phone that much was to give them an exclusive deal. The question is whether it is still worth it for Apple, and it might be no now.
I am not sure why this is newsworthy. When I was a freshman in college, one of the kids on our floor was a 14 year old starting his PHd in Computer Science. He already had his bachelors from UC Berkeley. He fit in ok, and we properly corrupted him, and he had his PHd by 17. I know other kids who did similar things. The academic work is not THAT difficult for lots of younger kids. Socially it is a bit harder, but many of the kids who decide to go to college do so not just because they are academically ready, but because they have trouble fitting in with kids their own age. Hell, I took many college courses while I was in middle and high school. We even talked about skipping grades, but I liked the social and athletic aspects of middle and highschool too much. Sure, the work was easy... which gave me more time to mess around and be a kid. For these kids, they clearly do not enjoy the social experience of highschool, so they skip it. It isn't like the kid is some sort of mad genius.
More likely does not mean a stepping stone... a stepping stone means that it leads you towards that direction..... your relationship seems more like a requirement..... yes, cannibals are always carnivores who also eat their own species... sort of like a square is always a rectangle.... cannibals are a subset of carnivores... not a leading step
I have been using a Myvu crystal ( http://www.myvu.com/ ) for about 6 months now with my iPhone, and I love it (other than how ridiculous I look wearing them.) It can take a bunch of different video sources, and it has 640x480 resolution (which works fine mostly). I use it to watch movies. The most use I get out them is watching movies lying in bed or while riding a stationary bike at the gym. They work great for that.
I don't understand why this occurrence would make you want to avoid automatic payment systems... You didn't sign up for the automatic payment system in this case, and you still had a problem.
Clearly the not using the automatic payment system doesn't help you avoid this problem. In reality, there is no way to NOT give a company permission to charge your account repeatedly whenever you pay for something online... (unless you use one of those one time credit card numbers). I don't think it is practical to advise never paying for anything online, so you always run the risk of accidentally being charged the wrong amount. The only prudent action is to always monitor your accounts to make sure all the charges are legit.
I agree with you somewhat. However, supplying what customers want is only part of the formula for a successful business. You also have to be able to turn a profit by providing what your customers want.
The internet has changed significantly how businesses can and can't make money. Some of the services that used to be provided by for-profit companies no longer can turn a profit. This is fine; not everything we consume and enjoy must be provided by a for-profit company. But to imply that the company only has to provide what the customer wants is a bit naive. They can't provide what the customer wants with the product they create, or they would make no money. They will have to get in a different business, or create a product that costs a lot less to produce.
All of that is the opposite with my plan and phone (iPhone on AT&T here in the US)...
1) Voicemail is easy to use (not linear, you can scan through to the end of messages, replay them, skip messages, etc) 2) It's free... always free to listen to the message, and free to leave if they are on AT&T, call from a landline, or call on evenings. 3) Texts are certainly NOT free. 10 cents each to send and receive... or $20 bucks a month for unlimited...
It is a pretty big problem with links to videos however... I click the link on facebook, it opens in the frame... and starts downloading and playing the video... when I go to close the frame, it has to reload the page, and so it restarts the video download and the video playback.. very annoying, wastes time and bandwidth
So how do we overcome the problem of collective action? You really should check out Mancur Olson's "The Logic of Collective Action" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Logic_of_Collective_Action) I am really interested in hearing a libertarian's solution to these sorts of problems.
He did pay for it. He signed up for an account and everything! I am pretty sure 44 GB is less than unlimited, which is what he is paying for.
It reminds me of this hilarious self-car wash near my parents house. It has a HUGE sign that says "WAS AS LONG AS YOU WANT!" and then a tiny little disclaimer saying "up to 20 minutes". Well at least they are a step above Time Warner... they have the disclaimer that EXPLICITLY states what the limit is.
The practices Monsanto wants to patent basically involve identifying genes that result in desirable traits in swine, breeding animals to achieve those traits and using a specialized device to inseminate sows deeply in a way that uses less sperm than is typically required.
Umm I think nature invented that device a long time ago....
What part of being anti-copyright is anti capitalist? You can have capitalism without draconian copyright laws, and you can have strict copyright laws in a socialist state.
To try to better fit your analogy, wouldn't this case be more like, say, holding the phone company responsible for the alcohol-to-kids store because they listed their telephone number and address? We all agree that this selling-to-anyone store is breaking the law... we just don't think telling people where the store is and what the store sells is illegal.
I apologize for not making this a car analogy.. I will try harder next time.
Fair enough, I guess I should have specified that a subset of philosophy deals with this work.
Thinking about studying Wittgenstein reminded me of another class in philosophy that reminded me of programming. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sense_and_Reference seems to me very similar to conceptually trying to figure out the relationship between pointers and variables in programming.

Well considering that Android is built on the Linux kernel... http://www.android.com/about/ ..... I don't think Linux has more than Android

Yeah, that guy has clearly never played civilization
Once the animal rights people get involved, it's game over.

This will protect us from all virtual Mexicans...

You can get a 1 TB drive for about 80 bucks (http://www.basoncomputer.com/item.aspx?id=HI0A38016), so it is even cheaper these days.
Was is wash of course... way too early in the morning on a saturday

Now, if you could build the controller out of a special LEGO set.........

When exactly does a model rocket become just a rocket?
