  1. first step or misstep on Why RAID 5 Stops Working In 2009 · · Score: 1

if your first step is to use the largest drive available in a performance raid, then your first step is probably a misstep.

it's better to use those raids with the smaller-yet-faster drives, ie the 10k+ rpm raptors or perhaps some yet to be seen faster better (stronger harder?) SSD's and use the latest ultra large HDDs in a simple redundant raid setup for backups.

    multi raids ftw

Interesting, i went through the same thing awhile ago, but all i had to do was email customer support with pictures of the box/cd case/cd/cd-key all clearly displayed (i don't know if it was all required but i figured it would leave less room for doubt in their minds) after i did so they kept emailing back questions i answered two emails, but on the third email i replied (something like...) "i really don't want to play 20 questions right now, i provided the proof of ownership could you please allow me to activate my product?" and the next email i had my game registered. no cost to me either...

the thing about the questions were that they didn't really seem relevant to my ownership of the game. anyways, i was entirely satisfied with the ease and the outcome of the whole process.

There is more to it than that though... take Bioshock for instance, that game got slammed again and again, especially here on slashdot, i can't even count the number of people who said "i won't buy it because makes you connect online when you install and keeps track of your installs" but then at the same time it really did take weeks for a *WORKING* crack to appear for the game. well the game was up right away but a real crack to you know, actually play the game took at least a full week if not longer, and even then it got proper'd like 3x till some group final got it right.

now bioshock did have strong sales (along with high ratings) but could it have been better, if they hadn't included an online-connect-at-install part?

i dunno, i bought the game and later on i torrented it also so that i could have an "easy install" version just in case.. never really needed it tho.

ummm just so other readers know, parent is mostly incorrect. the game is going to ship with thousands of creatures to populate your which you won't have to download. remember these creature files are only a few kilobytes each. it's not at all hard for them to pack a ton of them on the game disc, especially when you consider there will be no large levels to store on the discs, all the game worlds are randomly generated.

i dunno about textures, i remember hearing early on that they were also procedurally generated, and considering the size of the creature creator demo, textures prolly won't take up that much space either, relative to other games.
