    It doesn't.

I quit Runescape because of how they "handled" the gold problem. As a player for many years, I can tell you there are plenty of other reasons to quit but this was the straw. Their strategy for fixing most problems is akin to hacking off the body parts of someone who is sick. They just keep hacking until the problem goes away despite the disaster they create in the meantime. They ripped out an important piece of their foundation, hurting their player base, to "solve" the problem. Still today the game isn't near what it was. Fail.

They just aren't cool. I see tech stuff all the time that's cool and this just isn't that cool.

I dunno what it is but I don't see interfaces being so weird. Most of the "tuning" he does could be easily done on a nice touch screen with sliders. I don't want to make music by pouring the volume up and down or change the tempo by doing the same.

I don't pick up my turntable and tilt it to increase the pitch. I have a nice handy pitch slider for that. This seems like reinventing the wheel.

This instantly reminded me of a favorite essay by Mark Twight. (http://www.gymjones.com/knowledge.php?id=15)

    Particularly:

"Burn the bridge. Nuke the foundation. Back yourself up against a wall. Have an opinion one way or the other, get off the fence and rip it up. Cut yourself off so there is no going back. Once you're committed the truth will come out. You ask about security? What you need is uncertainty. What you need is confusion; something that forces you to reinvent yourself, a whip to drive you harder."

I always, without exception, do my best when I back myself into corner. Way back.

Several years ago my brother visted me. He took a few spins on my pc playing one of the Need For Speed games. He wasn't doing so well and got quite pissy from running off the road and getting wrecked my the npc cars.

Later that night we all went out for a few drinks then came back to my apartment and shared a nice blunt. A half hour later he was back on my pc playing Need For Speed. With calm surprise he called me over to watch. He was playing near perfectly, just cruising through the game effortlessly. It was quite funny and interesting.

I've experienced the same effects on many occasions. What is it? Who knows but it's there.

And by active, I don't mean spending 2 hours waiting in line every four years just to push a button or parroting the nonsense heard on the mainstream "news" while standing by the water cooler or forwarding the latest "I'm pissed off about (blank)" spam email.

From the New Hampshire consitution (1784):

    Article 10

"Government being instituted for the common benefit, protection, and security, of the whole community, and not for the private interest or emolument of any one man, family, or class of men; therefore, whenever the ends of government are perverted, and public liberty manifestly endangered, and all other means of redress are ineffectual, the people may, and of right ought to reform the old, or establish a new government. The doctrine of nonresistance against arbitrary power, and oppression, is absurd, slavish, and destructive of the good and happiness of mankind."

It's not just that people don't talk like this any more but don't have the balls to act like it either (or are just too addicted to nonsense like American Idol). Being a good American means being responsible for your country; not bending over when an oppressive govt says to.
