I have a degree in Geology so forgive me. In volcanic glasses such as obsidian over the course of millions of years start to crystallize in a process called devitrification. IIRC for the most part there are no volcanic glasses that are more than 10 million to 30 million years old. Granted this is a long time, but amorphous steel could devitrify faster than volcanic glass. This could be serious for a building built out of amorphous steel.
Installing IE 6 helps Windows ME out a great deal. For that matter most of the other updates are useful too. Still though even with these updates, I would rather have a machine with 98SE, 2000, or XP Pro on it. Oh yeah, to keep this on topic I had a 98SE machine that locked up after booting because it had so much spyware. I am currently installing XP Pro on a new hard drive for this machine. I still can't get the owner of the machine to at least try to avoid installing spyware.
Not to be too much of an ass, but the title for IEEE 1392 is "Recommended Practice for Terminology - Definition of Terms for Virtual Reality" and has been withdrawn as a standard. The iPod uses IEEE 1394 which is also known as Firewire to connect to a computer. Using terms for virtual reality to connect an external CD-RW to an iPod would be interesting to say the least.
Buy a Samsung DVD drive or DVD/CD-RW drive, I have one of each and they are some of quietest optical drives I have used. While Samsung CD-ROM drives are louder than either the DVD drive or DVD/CD-RW drive the Samsung CD-ROM drives are relatively quiet. The only problem is that Samsung DVD drives will not read DVD+R/RW discs yet. The newest firmware for the DVD/CD-RW drive, which is not on the Samsung website yet, adds support for reading DVD+R/RW discs.
I lost my moderation privileges too! Hey and I even have a lower UID than you, so I have been here longer. Oh well, there are worse things that could happen.
I read many of these posts and I almost want to cry. I see so many people who try biofeedback which may work for a while in some cases, but does not last and is not as effective as Ritalin or Adderall. ADD is a chemical imbalance in the brain, you cannot think your way out of ADD, you would just as well try to think your way out of Type I diabetes. Save yourself and your daughter the trouble and ask a doctor what is causing the tics and consider trying Adderall or Dexadrine.
Look at the names of those Journals: "Appl Psychophysiol Biofeedback" and "Electroencephalogr." Those are hardly major journals and probably have editors that probably have a significant bias towards their particular field. If there were articles from more general neurology journals with larger circulations. The reason you do not hear about this therapy more is that in better managed studies biofeedback therapy doesn't work or wears off after a while. In any case it is not as effective as stimulant drugs.
25-pin serial ports on some systems have pinouts for two serial ports. Of course why the computer just doesn't have two 9-pin serial ports is beyond me.
They didn't use an Athlon64 in the reviews because some Radeon cards were showing some artifacts. The article states that the artifacts may have been due to overheating due to an incompatible motherboard. I think that they were using a crappy case without enough cooling.
Bah I stayed out on the day after thanksgiving in below freezing temperatures and waited until Best Buy opened to get a Lite-On LTR-411 for 130 before $50 MIR, which is a really good deal.
The Apple key on a Mac keyboard is actually functional on a PC as the Windows key. The Power key still does nothing. Oddly, the equal key on the numberpad does nothing too.
So what would happen if you dropped a head sized or larger amount of silly putty from three stories up? Would it bounce or would it splash? Or would it pancake? Has anyone actually tried this?

They didn't make a three motherboards. Apple only made one PCB and Apple selectively populates components. So the 1.6GHz model has the tracings and the holes for eight DIMM slots, but there are only four plastic and metal slots for DIMMs on the 1.6GHz motherboard. One of the problems with the Mac retail 9800 Pro is that it is based off of the PC retail 9800 Pro so it only has a single digital out, it has VGA and a DVI port as opposed to the Apple OEM card which has two digital out ports which are an ADC port and a DVI port.

Yeah here are some more things to watch out for with the 1.6GHz and 1.8GHz versions.
1. The 1.6GHz machine only has four DIMM slots as opposed to eight DIMM slots on the 1.8GHz machine.
2. The 1.6GHz machine only has 33MHz PCI slots that do NOT support PCI-X. The 1.8GHz machine has two 100MHz and one 133MHz PCI-X slots. In any case both machines do not accept 5V PCI cards and only accept 3.3V and dual voltage PCI cards. 3.3V keyed PCI cards have a notch in the edge connector at the front of the connector near to the metal bracket. 5V keyed cards have a notch in the connector near the back of the card. Dual voltage cards have notches in both places. 3. There are only two 3.5" drive bays and one 5.25" drive bay. The hard drive bays only have serial ATA connectors available. A parallel ATA hard drive will not work without an adaptor, which may or may not fit in the space available. 4. The Radeon 9600 Pro that ships with the G5 only has 64MB of RAM. If you want to play Doom ]I[ or other games with the highest settings and Antialiasing, upgrade to the Radeon 9800. Otherwise the 9600 should suffice for general office use. Also be aware that according to the developer note for the G5 the Radeon 9800 Pro is crippled with a 128-bit memory bus as opposed to a 256-bit bus on the retail 9800 Pro cards. However I think the developer note may be incorrect in this regard, but I wouldn't put it past Apple to do this.
Intel 875P chipset boards have a special bus for gigE controllers. To make sure you get a board using the special gigE bus and not the PCI bus, buy an Intel branded board.

Reminds me of a story one of my old geology professor told. For a long time the geology department of the university I used to go to stored all of their radioactive rocks in one room. So one day an inspector from the main campus came up and was planning on inspecting the radioactive materials the Medical Department. The inspector came up to the campus and the head of the Geology Department suggested that the inspector come over and check out the room with the radioactive rocks. The inspector came out of the room with the rocks extremely frightened. After the inspector calmed down a bit he came up with all sorts of suggestions on how to safely store these radioactive rocks. It was decided that the implementation of these suggestions was too expensive. So one of the professors in the Geology Department decided to store the rocks in his backyard in an old filing cabinet. These rocks are probably still in his backyard to this day.
I always liked the Apple Extended Keyboard II. Unfortunatly the Apple keyboard uses ADB and an iMate USB to ADB adaptor runs about $40. I also like old Northgate keyboards, which use the same Alps mechanical keyswitches and is an AT keyboard. However, the Apple keyboard uses rubber spacers that reduce noise. Both the Northgate and the Apple keyboards can be thrown off a buildting. Micro Connectors also makes a new keyboard with mechanical keyswitches that is not as quiet or as sturdy as the Apple keyboard. For that matter the Micro Connectors keyboard costs about as much new as what a used Apple keyboard and a USB to ADB adaptor would cost.
The last flight I was on was in January 2001 and I still have nightmares about it. I was flying from Minneapolis to Hawaii on Sun Country. Sun Country is an economy regional air carrier. At any rate I am 6'6" and my thighs are just long enough and the distance between the seats just short enough that when I was sitting as far back as I could sit in the chair my knees hit the next seat. Never mind that it was difficult to fit my feet anywhere. It was eight hours of pure agony. At least if I ever fly Sun Country again I will end up on one of their new planes, they got rid of all of the planes like the one I flew in. At least on the flight back I was in an exit row seat.
North Korea has warheads with chemical weapons that can be put on artillery that can reach Seoul and missles that can reach Japan. North Korea has all of these in abundance. If war breaks out North Korea could turn South Korea into one huge toxic waste dump. Casualty estimates for an attack like this have been put in the range of millions. After that though, the war would be all asymmetrical, at least until China joins the war on the side of the North Korea. At which point we would have World War III. War with North Korea should scare the hell out of you. Aside from that though the rest of your post is just wrong.
