Or any government institution bulk-purchasing computers. I'm still wondering why we're getting laptops that have fingerprint scanners, 500gb hard drives and non-Intel (and rather non-entry level) 3D graphics chipsets. We even get them with wireless that we have to disable the drivers for anyways. We'd do perfectly fine with netbook-grade hardware, and I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to install TF2 and 250gb of porn on the laptops on my ship.
I started going with netbooks because I travel and walk around a lot and was tired of lugging full-sized laptops around. This is my third netbook:
#1, Eee 701, succumbed to humidity in Puerto Rico. #2, MSI Wind, succumbed to being in my backpack in Curacao and me getting hit with an epic wave bumming around on the cistern in front of Willemstad. Ipod dead, Wind dead. Definite external factors at work there. =P #3, LG X110, lasted a whole half-year so far, only hiccup with it was when stock hard drive got fried when a shipmate shut it and stuffed it in its case when I was pretty hammered and he decided I needed to go back to ship. I always turn off sleep-on-lid-close, so it fried a little in that nice insulated case (lesson learned from the accident with the Wind). Luckily I have spare hard drives kicking around. It's still going strong.
I sort of dispute the higher failure rate for netbooks. Is it component-related or wear-and-tear related? Is half a percentage point that big of a deal?
Nah, an updated Wing Commander would be hot. And if MechWarrior got a new game, bring it back to the old MW2 feel of piloting... I've tried MW3 and MW4 a few times and it just doesn't quite feel right. Don't know why.
I have a teletype machine on my ship that we still use when things go south. Its minimum setting, if I remember correctly, is 30 baud. We usually use it at 75. Yes, there are still some current applications of 75 baud.
We call out to the beasts of the sea to come forth and join us, this night is yours
Because, one day we will all be with you in the black and deep
One day we will all go into the water
Not very good for gaming, though. I always lose the arrow keys in the heat of combat. Even the keys on this logitech keyboard aren't that much higher and I can feel them tons better than the Mac keyboard's arrows. Also, Mac kb doesn't have as much travel, which doesn't feel right either.
My MacBook ate it after a year of pretty rough abuse (I took it everywhere, used it everywhere, took it to sea, probably abused it with harsh voltage in foreign ports... =P spilled shit on it, dropped it...)
It died because I slipped on ice and went arse over tip and fell on my back -- on top of it. Anything would be hard-pressed to come back from that. So there, that's my brief anecdote about a MacBook that thought it was a ToughBook and tried a little bit too hard.
Not only that, but you have to put wind turbines on someone's property. These, you can just confer with your local navigational authority and plop them down where it won't be inconvenient =)

I love military procurement.

LG X110. No SODIMM slot because the space it occupied in the Wind now holds a 3G modem or some shit. 1GB RAM soldered on is all you get.
Grumble grumble.
Because it's more fun to watch people flip out over a mains standard.
How about the ability to teach someone something almost instantly.
Ah. Like kung-fu.
Just go play EVE. >=D

Steam has the original games on sale too, I might have to give in and pony up.
Did summary say 'more flash storage'?
You know how excited we got at porn dithered to CGA-grade grayscale and took at least 20min per picture to download?
9 baud...?

It took twitter to break the camel's back for you? =P
Well, it doesn't have wireless, but might I recommend a TRS-80 100. Everything else fits your criteria.

Man, I need that to help wake up.
Then don't buy it, and keep on L4D1. Valve going to disable L4D1 online play once 2 comes out? Problem is where?
Why do their adverts compare macs to windows then?
'I'm Windows.'
'And I'm a Mac.'
I don't remember seeing that commercial.
I see what you did there.
Of course, OSX86 projects have rendered that moot. Maybe someone will hack Win7 Lite to run more than three things at a time.
It has been made.

At least someone got it. Last time I make a Three Amigos joke around here.
It's infamous. You know, -more- than famous.
I stay home and have about 15 drinks and talk to a real live girl. Mind, she gets annoyed after about beer #10.
To be fair, a glass-faced office building will kill far more birds than a windmill.
Yes, but birds being killed by flying into vertical cuisinarts is more fun to think about than boring vertical slabs.

How many craigslist, kijiji or eBay purchases do you trace back to make sure the thing wasn't stolen?
