  1. Re:NSFC? Try VerySFC. on Next Step in Human Evolution · · Score: 1

I'm fed up with hearing this shit from Christians, now I have to put up with it on slashdot? Anyhow, evolution and creationism are NOT polar opposites. Evolution does not describe where life originated from, although some might argue it implies this much. Evolution describes the process by which animals change to better suit their environment, which is a scientifically documented phenomenon. This isn't questionable, and it doesn't even conflict with creationism because it DOES NOT DESCRIBE THE ORIGIN OF LIFE! Sorry if I'm coming off as a little trollish, but I'm getting really sick of misinformation and ignorance relating to evolution.

It wasn't much to begin with, but even at the time I was always impressed by how much they had accomplished. It's been a long time since I've checked its progress and I can say with some certainty that I would never have expected it to progress as far as it has.

I apologize if I came across too strongly, but in response to your response: I still don't think that the coolant water is nearly as toxic as the other wastes. I was mainly responding to the fact that the grandparent poster had a fundamental misunderstanding of the way a nuclear reactor worked. To say that the reason nuclear waste is dangerous is because the water is heated by irradiation and is therefor radioactive is simply false.

  4. Re:Knee-Jerk Nucleophobia on Green Party Candidate David Cobb Answers Your Questions · · Score: 1

You are absolutely, 100% wrong. A nuclear reactor does not simply operate by a radioactive substance increasing the temperature of water; a nuclear reaction has to occur. This means the atoms are actually split, releasing the energy of the atomic bonds. What results is a huge amount of heat and, when the reactor is submersed in water, this creates high pressure steam sufficient to turn a turbine. The water is absolutely NOT radioactive and it in fact vents off into the atmosphere. The radioactive bit is the spent fuel (IANANP, but I believe this is plutonium and other wastes).

How dare anyone taint our young kids' minds with coporate propaganda? I grow sick at the thought that our children might be programmed like little corporate drones to believe their bullshit. The industry can't completely subvert american ideals because it is politically and socially unacceptable? Great, let's CHANGE what's acceptable by brainwashing our youth. Yeah, really ironic.

Anyhow, I still think you're not quite getting it. I've explained it, but let me try again. The software in question was not intentionally designed to be insecure, but it's a product of its poor design. It WAS intentionally designed the way it is and the design lends itself to insecurity. I somehow doubt some microsoft engineer stopped and though, "hmm, let's design this software to be insecure so people constantly have to upgrade to get the latest security patches," conspiracy theorists excepted. This is not straying from any definition of "design." What you're trying to argue is that the statement implies insecurity was one of windows's design goals; I disagree. I think anybody can agree that the way windows is designed is insecure, therefor "insecure by design." Anyhow, arguing semantics is stupid on a technology site.

  14. Re:Good point, muddled way of expressing it on Windows Is 'Insecure By Design,' Says Washington Post · · Score: 1

I think people are resorting to pedantry when it isn't necessary. The headline does not say windows is designed to be insecure, it says that it was designed and as a result of this design it's insecure. Again, it does NOT say it was designed to be insecure; THAT would imply intent as the other poster is suggesting. To extend upon another posters analogies: a car was not designed to kill, but you could still say it is dangerous by design. It WAS designed to go over 100 MPH, and that is dangerous. Or even the hammer; it was designed to drive nails into wood, but it, as any other blunt object, is dangerous by design because it is designed to hit things with a very large force. Anyhow, some people seem to have serious reading comprehension skills on this site. It isn't that hard, people.

In my school, the students hold these prayer sessions and maintain a school endorsed bible club. The catcher is that they have made it against school rules to wear anything that this christian town would view as sacrilage. For example, you can't wear all black, dragon shirts/jewelry, or pentagrams. However, it is perfectly alright to wear a big cross on your T-Shirt and carry around a bible. I believe that this is more of the problem and shows why religion of any sort in school should not be allowed. You also have to remember, you have no constitutional rights as a minor and it's debatable how much the public school system should be considered part of the government.
