like he sued the EPA 14 times before he became the administrator and plenty of other horrible industry funded activities. Literally the last and most corrupt and paranoid person you could get to run that agency...
After the last slashdot adstory for this game, i decided to download it and fire it up to try it. My advice? don't bother. The game does not have text chat. You have to use voice. And are banned (allegedly) for turning off voice because you don't want to hear a bunch of prepubescent american teenagers talking to eachother. This was a conscious decision by the developers apparently.
This is a new thing to me in games, that they would not have text chat. Is that the way of the future? totally sad.
On the other hand, everyone cheats at something. Some examples of cheating (if you want to interpret it loosely):
- Speeding. - queue jumping by the elderly - Making money without working (investments and being rich already) - exaggerating your skills to get a good job - exaggerating your good qualities to get laid - finding loopholes in a system - using computers instead of your mind for tasks (arithmetic, spell checkers, internet research) - store clerk gives you the wrong change, or bank error in your favour. - is bartering with sellers (criagslist, garage sales) cheating?
What is cheating? "Cheating is the receiving of a reward for ability or finding an easy way out of an unpleasant situation by dishonest means"
Is the poor kid who gets a 59.5% on a test but the instructor bumps it up to 60% so that they can pass cheating?
is the affluent kid who hires private tutors cheating?
If these kids will either make or break their entire lives by one test, then you cant blame people for gaming the system by any means necessary. Well maybe *YOU* can, but i can't fault them when its the system that is broken.
I think computers were invented to "cheat" the old world order. Copy things by hand? or cheat and use a computer to run off copies. Do long division when desiging buildings? or plug it into a calculator. Is uber et al "cheating" the broken taxi cartels in many cities? The whole current mindset of "disruption" in business, could easily be cast as "cheating".
Let he who has never sped in traffic, or cut someone off, cast the first stone. The fact is, we are all cheaters in some internally justifiable way. So don't be so holier than thou about it...
"This company is impressively integrated. I bet they have a first class internal auditing team who had to hassle system owners for years before this was all properly configured."
It doesnt take that much work to buy systems that all integrate to active directory these days. Sure it takes work to convince people to buy the right products, but as long as you do your research i am not sure of any software space that doesn't have some product with AD / sso integration. More true now that all applications are moving to the web.
I can with one right click, stop a person from getting into the building, getting on wireless, computers, email, stop them being able to enter hours into the payroll system and kill their access to any company databases or software. And we are just a small 500 person company.
In fact its necessary to do this. It would take me like 20 minutes to deactivate an employee if they were all separate systems! However i don't use expiry dates for contractors. It ALWAYS leads to some problem like TFA exposes. We are not a high security place and i do double check with HR before deleting anyone to make sure nothing is out of place with the request.
Better hang onto those old machines then. Now a days, installing an SSD in a mac with a laminated screen requires you to cut the glue out and buy glue kits ($30) to replace it. And you better hope you dont scratch the screen while completely disassembling it!
Your post is just anecdotal flamebait. I have tens of dell laptops on site here and they are all fine. Much less headaches than the handful of macs which require OS rebuilds every year or so. Oh and i can centrally manage the dells, so i can reimage one and have it back in use for the user in 30-60min depending on what software they have installed. Contrast that with a mac which takes half a day to reimage and get going because i have to be present infront of the machine clickity clicking for every step of the process. The mac reimaging instructions are 22 steps. The windows machine imaging instructions are 1) boot to pxe 2) select deployment task 3) give computer name 4) wait 15 minutes, and then its ready for the user in most cases with the standard software load.
and dont even get me started on the lack of wake on fucking lan! its god damn 2018 and you still cant WOL a mac? come the fuck on!
Apple computers are, and always have been, computers for dandies. When they switched to intel, there was zero reason to ever go to a mac again. But people like paying lots of money because they confuse expensive with quality.
Not necessarily. What tastes good is often in the brain. All it would take would be a bad association. For instance my wife can't process super fatty foods so if she even tastes it, she gets queasy because she knows if she ate it she would feel sick for a few hours.
Similar to how i cant drink wisers whiskey ever again because even the smell of it makes me gag due to one or two really bad nights with it when i was a teen. All other whiskeys are fine.
"the cellular and GPS-equipped monitoring devices we slip into our pockets whenever we go *anywhere*."
Well not "we" as some of "us" never bought into this smartphone fad.
Isn't it obvious that your phone is tracking you and monitoring your behaviour? Who can not know that at this point... You are simply trading your privacy for the convenience of a pocket computer.
" Locating them would be trivial. Harvesting them for anything of value would be equally trivial."
I am wondering how you are going to find a single 2 meter craft in the entire ocean. Trivially?
So say you do end up locating one, you then spend hundreds if not thousands on boat gas to get to it, then you have to disable it without triggering its possible security (that say sends a picture of the intruder right back to hq on the sat link).
Then you have the probe onboard your vessel. You have 80k worth of oceanographic sensors, a few solar panels and a pretty worthless carbon fibre drone body. To whom do you then sell these specialized ocean monitoring sensors to? craigslist? ebay?
no fucking part of that exercise could be described as trivial dude! use your head. they aren't filled with gold or other things that can be easily melted down. When you are paying 5k for a sensor, it for sure has a globally unique ID that can be traced back to the owner, trivially.
its like saying well i can just go to the airport and steal a plane, they are worth millions! Yeah, you can, and then what.
"In 2009 when the threw a Time Traveller's Party and no one attended, he indicated that this was confirmation that time travel was not possible."
Or he partied hard, tripped to the future and the past with the time traveler that showed up and then couldn't possibly report any of that for fears of messing up the timeline. This is a smart guy we are talking about here.
"Windows take like 3 hours to update on my i5 12g ram 10krpm"
Well i do not disagree with your thesis (windows 10 sucks), you do have a rotational hard drive. I ran 15k hard drives but dropped them almost a decade ago for a crucial m4 that performed circles around it.
Get a samsung drive. They dont fail. Ive deployed hundreds at this point and just had my first failure on a drive a deployed in 2013. And even that I am not sure if its the actual hard drive that has failed because its working fine for me on the bench during stress testing.
There is simply zero reason to use a rotational drive in 2018. Your lag is probably caused by your slow ass drive, sorry to say..
m.2 drives thats another story though. Already had a few fail due to heat mostly and all bets are off on other manufacturers that are not samsung. Stay away from intel, plextor and adata ssds.. had problems with those too.
I'd say if you have clean water, access to food, shelter and sanitation of some sort, then you are not truly in a disaster situation. In the classical sense of the word of course.
By your rationale, camping would be a minor disaster.
Maybe it is for you. But in my reality, that is quite sad.
Not that i know anything about america, but didnt he take away the rights of the so called DACA or dreamers? forcing all these kids whoes parents brought them here to go back to a country where they may not even have citizenship?
Unless you consider american children not deserving of civil rights, just because of their birth country, which is a pretty monstrous position to take.
Theres no way in hell i am taking a 30% performance decrease because of some theoretical memory exploit..
I have been purposely avoiding any 2018 firmwares for just this reason!
But it would be nice to get a confirmation of my bias as things may have changed. Even a 10% performance hit would be not worth it imho. So some rogue process can read a random part of the computers memory. I'm sure some clever person will figure out a way to exploit it, but I am not buying the hype that this is a super big deal at the current time.
America doesnt have a gun problem. It has a media problem.
No, it has psychopath/mental health and inequality problems. That the american culture actively rewards these traits makes it broadly an american problem. Lots of countries have guns, but most don't shoot up kindergardens. Americans are the problem and should probably not be trusted with firearms.
I made the mistake several jobs ago of finding out that a fresh off the boat co-worker who was the cousin of a VP, and could barely troubleshoot a paperjam was paid almost as much as me. All it did was create resentment and anger at the company and my co worker. I soon left the company for many reasons and that was surely one of them.
As someone else said, in IT we can probably look at anyone elses salary if we so choose. However i think its a horrible idea. You end up looking at people and questioning why they make X more than you and it just makes you bitter and jaded. There is no up side unless you want the impetus to look for another job.
Do a good job, and if you don't make enough to live, then find another one. Multiple times I have submitted a resignation letter after finding another job only to have my manager come back and offer me a few dollars more an hour to stay. And its like, well why the fuck didn't you do that in the first place? then maybe i wouldn't have even looked for another job!
"And yet all of these problems could be greatly reduced by the use of EPR (Earned Public Reputation) to gently filter in favor of nice folks. The trolls and other villains can be nudged back under invisible rocks to amuse themselves and the play with the few people who enjoy that form of slumming "
" I just got an Optiplex 790 i5 for $25 (with 12GB of RAM in it too, couldn't refuse that)"
No offense to your point, but you got a really good deal there. a core i5-2500 (just the CPU) is still selling on the used market for at least 50 bucks. Because as you noted, its performance has held fast and will actually be faster than some 6th gen core i3...
one of those core i5 optiplex 790s around here on craigslist would easily sell for at least $100-200. And my son has a 2nd gen core i5 and it plays all modern games fine (with appropriate video card and ram of course). The 2nd gen core chips are legendary for how they have held performance for like 6 or 7 years now. a 2600k still sells for $120 USD for just the cpu and they sell reliably like hotcakes at any price under that.
Brother you did the same thing, not listening to this guy the same way he wouldn't listen to you. You probably had biased figures with a conclusion in mind. For instance it is often stated that coal generation produces radiation, and while technically true, over simplifies things to such a degree as to make your perspective look correct.
Fact: nuclear power generation as currently practiced and in practice currently is full of human error. A human error in nuclear power, or with nuclear waste can make entire regions uninhabitable for tens of thousands of years. Far longer than any sort of greenhouse gasses will be around. You cannot get rid of the possibility of human error period.
People that think nuclear will rule fail to account for human nature. We cannot even conceptualize the timescales that are involved with the waste we are generating. You might think people 200 years ago were ignorant to ignore the effects of fossil fuels in the present day. Well that timescale is simply a fraction of what we are dealing with nuclear.
And yet people are still proposing we develop more nuclear power and more nuclear waste. Yes I know there are reactor designs such as CANDU that really go out of their way to minimize waste, and "fail safe" instead of melting down, however they are not 100%. And most importantly, THEY ARE NOT THE ONES THAT ARE BEING INSTALLED! You have GE reactor designs from the 70s that are proven to be flawed. That is what is getting deployed in reality because of politics and money.
So in conclusion, i will always be against nuclear power until they design something that is 100% safe and creates 0% waste. This could be something like the salt reactors, or whatever they are called, however agian, that is not what is currently being proposed or deployed in the world.
the guy you were talking to probably thought you were not living in the real world, but more likely a world of ideal situations. Thats the main argument i have with nuclear power. Counting "facts" like historical deaths and damage have no weight with me becuase you are not projecting out 10000+ years (how can you possibly predict the future right), so to me, that means you have not really considered the full aspects of nuclear power, to not even acknowledge the massive theoretical dangers. And the waste is simply a fact and a problem even today with no good solution.
Yeah just assumed that people were mostly all so similar that i lost track of who was who. i suppose its possible that I have this. I find that there are really only a handful of "face types" per race (or racial combination), and that i very rarely encounter a face type that I havent seen before. Happened to me the other day when i met a half korean and half brazilian girl, but most people fall into a regular face pattern that I have seen before.
Happens to me all the time, people recognize me and i have no idea who they are. However i can usually tell if i have seen that person before (just not necessarily the context, and if i only met them once before, forget it). It takes a good lot of work and tricks of memory for me to remember someones name though. When I meet someone, i often try and associate their name to the first time i heard that name before and that previous person. Then i can look at them, do some mental gymnastics (oh his name is the same as the brother of my best friend in grade school...) and out pops the name.
personally i think my memory for faces just sucks. Not sure its actually this condition. I can tell people apart for the most part. Except like a room full of hipsters and other concentrations of similar looking people.
"and for some reason hotmail users have more accidents then it's only fair they charge more for hotmail users."
What if they changed that to "cloud mail" users instead? They ran the numbers and not only are people with gmail, microsoft, yahoo, etc email accounts more likely to get in an accident than people who run their own mailservers, there are MORE of them! so they can raise rates for more total people all while claiming that "the metrics prove it!".
Maybe private insurance works this way, but around here we have government insurance and your discount is based on 1) how long you have been an accident free driver, 2) whether you have under 25 year olds driving the car, 3) the car make and model (engine size, etc), 4) the replacement value of the car (capped at 50k i believe). And thats pretty much it.
i do hate public insurance for always siding with the customer that will cost them less money to settle with, but they are pretty equal when it comes to determining rates.
"Considering they believe we are closer to doomday now that we were during the Cuban missile crisis I'd say your spot on."
I'm much less scared of nuclear missile negotiations with both armies on high alert being handled by someone like kennedy, than your current dumbfuck president handling his personal cell phone.
Having idiots driving the ship makes it much more likely to have an incident than simply driving dangerous cargos around competently.
There was a great new yorker article about him and his "philosophies".

I used to go out with a girl who for about 6 months had this problem. Would wake her up at night extremely upset and paranoid.
The cause was eventually identified, iron deficiency. A few iron IV's later and lots of clams and the feeling went away completely.
