I tend not to believe that "getting a better job" is equivalent to "bettering oneself".
I do believe that as human beings, everyone is entitled to a few basic rights - the right to adequate food and shelter, say. Water. Clothing. Heck, even education. I know, it's crazy! Fundamental respect for my fellow man...I must be one of those bleeding heart types, eh?
Jordan is a pretty secular country (moreso than many U.S. states), and they have a significant minority Christian population. It's easier to get beer and liquor there than it is in much of the U.S. (my home state of Oregon, for example). There's even a halfway decent bar scene, although it's pretty overpriced and most of the people at the "cool" (i.e. scene, not rich) bars are trying way too hard to seem western.
It doesn't matter whether teaching these things is WoW's purpose. The point is that it does teach these things, and that is a matter of concern. There is no "trying" to learn here, these concepts are fundamental to the function of the game, and if you don't learn them, you can't play (or at least, you'll be severely hamstrung).
This is an issue of social responsibility that is far more important than the surface issues which the media tends to focus on. Does a game like Postal teach kids that it's a good idea to kill people? Doesn't seem likely to me. But does WoW teach players that laboring interminably at mundane tasks is more worthy of reward than actual excellence? Without a doubt. And the question asked by the article is whether or not this is a good and right thing.
Listen, just about everyone here already considers the ID'ers irredeemably stupid. The goal of the original post wasn't to try and rub their noses in it. It was to say, "Look, this article is so poorly thought out that it shows strong parallels with already established idiocy on the level of ID! That's how awful this rubbish is!"
The ID stuff wasn't the goal of the post, it was just a point of reference.
I can't speak for any religions outside of the "big three", but one of the central themes of Christianity, Judaism and Islam is that the will of God is ultimately unopposable. Humanity is helpless, and everything that happens is absolutely preordained. The stories encoded in the base texts of the religions happened as they did because they absolutely could not have happened any other way. Basically, there is nothing anyone can do to change what's to come, we have no control over what happens to us.
This is not a very good match for a medium whose sole distinuishing feature is its interactivity.
I don't know about Starcraft or Warcraft, I never played much of them, but Diablo2 is the most heavily modded non-FPS that I am aware of (link), and you can't play mods on standard battle.net. Bnetd would allow custom servers to be set up for popular mods (link), which would really help the community flourish. As it is, if you want to play a mod in anything other than single player, you have to schedule a play date with a particular other player, and pickup games or a large real-time player chat are virtually impossible. This alone more than justifies the project's existance to me.
* Halo 2, which perfected playing online with an incredibly strong interface.
Has no one played any PC games? Seriously, this concept that was "perfected" by Halo 2, we've had that and better on the PC for *years*. Much, much better.
What would keep someone from saying more or less exactly the same thing about Muslims? I.e. that those people blowing themselves (and everyone else) up aren't Muslim, by definition?
>> Oklahoma City was meant to be a wake-up call to a government that was abusing its power.
And 9/11 wasn't? What planet are you on? One of the primary reasons for the attacks was the U.S. government's horrendous abuse of its international power in its constant military and political support for Israel. Do you really think that 9/11 would have happened if we weren't pumping tens of billions of dollars per year into the Israeli occupation? Sure, the hard-line extremists would still be around, but they'd have a much harder time recruiting angry young Palestinians who've spent their entire lives under Israel's heel. Without that framework of frustration and anti-Americanism, these terrorist groups would be utterly ineffectual.
Before some idiot makes the obvious reply here, I am absolutely NOT condoning or excusing ANY terrorist attacks. There is a world of difference between providing an explanation and providing an excuse.
You are both thinking of engineering, rather than architecture. While it's true that the latter encapsulates some of the former, there's a reason that the architecture department is part of the School of Fine Arts at most universities.

This may be the greatest /. post ever made.

Yes...because "seperate but equal" worked so well the last time we tried it.

I challenge you to find any real world religion well represented by fictional book...
Umm...the Bible?
The last Gamespotting has already been posted. The article in the link is almost two weeks old.

AI in games can only go so far.
No, AI in games has only gone so far. The sky is the limit, pal, just you wait.
So you're saying that it actually is a cold day in Hell?

Hmm...ever hear of the IRA? Those guys were pretty pasty.

2 years of military duty might teach our nations emerging adults a thing or two about self disipline, respect, hard work, and preparedness.
That's quite a tradeoff for their independance, self-reliance, creativity and personal freedom.

Yeah, I can tell the difference between 60fps and 75fps. 60fps gives me a headache after ten minutes.
