  1. Re:Color on Dreamcast Web Server Running Off Memory Card · · Score: 1

Doesn't bother me... other than the fact that I have to shield my eyes when the page first comes up so that my retinas don't get burned from the intensity of the neon purple. The effect is especially dramatic after you've been sitting in the dark for a while.

  2. Price? on Mass Storage Leaves Microchips in the Dust · · Score: 3, Informative
In mass storage we have seen a 60,000-fold fall in price -- more than a dozen times the force of Moore's law

Moore's law says nothing about price though. If you are going to compare hard disks to processors in the same general terms using Moore's law, shouldn't you compare increase in storage size to increase in processing power?

Hate to burst your bubble, but SXSW doesn't really need slashdot to "advertise" for it. I've been a couple of times, and I live in Austin. There are multitudes of people here to catch all of the music and there has been since last Wednesday -- SXSW is huge *every* year.

And if you can't be here, why not listen to it over the net? I really don't understand your gripe...

Maybe I've got a really good dentist, but I didn't even feel the needle when he put in the novocaine the other day.

OTOH, when I had my wisdom teeth removed, that bastard (a different dentist than the one I have now) didn't care -- I guess he figured I was on the nitrous and that I would really care either. He was wrong -- and I was pissed.

So, it all depends on the dentist doing the work...

  19. XBOX economics on Why The X-Box Network Will Fail · · Score: 1

We all know that Microsoft is losing money on the deal, so by buying an xbox, we create some demand for the machine and more will be produced to meet this demand. Thus by buying an xbox, you get your video games and you hurt the man at the same time.

Of course this falls apart if they quit producing new xboxes but it is interesting to think about at the same time. I wonder if this online service will be profitable either - i.e. will the subscription price defray the costs of the network or is M$ just going to lose more money?

It's almost like they are *trying* to lose money when they are so far in the hole yet they continue to push the xbox.

Disclaimer: I'm not at all involved with the film, I just find it kind of funny. I guess it's a more profitable way to waste one's time rather than playing SF ;)

Wrong. I happen to be one of those weird cases -- I've only been able to see out of my right eye since I was born. To me, this is a very exciting development. I've often hoped that it would one day be possible to restore sight in my left eye, and this looks like something that just might do it.

The people most interested in this article can't read it.

That may be true, but there are plenty here who (I'm sure) have full eyesight that seem find this to be an amazing advance.
