  1. Re:Modular my *ss - Lets talk about Mira :-) on XP Service Pack Does the Impossible · · Score: 2

Whats really going to rock in SP1 for XP is the new Mira technology stuff. If you dont know what that is - I suggest you cruise on over to http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/mira_preview. asp and take a long hard look at some of the cool shit MS is doing.

    OT, but here we go:
I frankly don't see the big deal about Mira's technology. It's really not much different from having a laptop with a 802.11 card in it; if you need to mirror your desktop's screen, open a VNC session, etc. A little lighter and fewer moving parts, but certainly not much cheaper; 15" Mira displays will be over $1000! Plus they are way too heavy to be user friendly right now.

It is certainly not technology I want either. I don't want to lug out a screen to show off pictures like a frame, which is how they envision these devices being used. And honestly, I'm tired of wireless devices; the more wireless devices you have, the harder it is to get away from them. How long before your office makes you carry a Mira screen with you at all times?? I don't want or need to answer emails in my kitchen, and I sure as hell don't want to bring Microsoft onto my computer, let alone into my living room.

Great. And then most of the bands you love you would never have even heard of.

Apparently you're under the assumption that all of us need the labels to hear about new music we are interested in!

For me personally, not a single band that I listen to gets radio play around here (or in general!), and yet they have quite a fanbase, and several CDs. I find out about bands by going to concerts/shows and by borrowing CDs from friends. Labels are totally unnecessary in this equation; at least one quarter of the bands I listen to are self-produced and unsigned anyway.

It will most likely be modded down, and probably for good reason. Your submission was rejected because Slashdot covered the hole in NS/Mozilla in this Slashback.

Just because your submission was rejected does not mean the story didn't make it on the site.

Please, if you are going to post something negative, at least get your facts straight first. Also, FYI, the Mozilla vulnerability was fixed within 24 hours, and does not affect 1.0RC2+.

If every musicians in the world went broke from napster, I would still think it was great.

Can you name me one musician who ever went broke from Napster??

The fact of the matter is that the only people in the music business that napster hurt were the middlemen. Not the artists themselves, but the middlemen who take all the money for the artists respective work.

Under the current system, almost all artists make their money from concerts, not from CD sales. Therefore, even if people downloaded music without paying for the CD, it really didn't hurt the artist all that much. Instead, it offered free advertising for how good that artist's music was.

I can distinctly remember going to see a band that I liked before Napster really started getting popular. I saw them at a club, and no more than 200 people were there. A friend of mine put their stuff up on Napster (yes, this was illegal). 3 months later, they were playing a larger venue, and the show was sold out. Over 900 people were in attendance. Personally, I think a lot of this was due to Napster. People who had never heard of them could now listen to all their music.

Honestly, what's better for the artist? 200 people buying their CDs at $15 a pop, of which they might see $.50 to $1 per disc, or 900 people paying $20 a pop to see them play live??

Like I said in one of my previous posts on the subject (that I cannot find now for the life of me!), the company that I work for is already very wary of it's data and the "toys" people bring into the office. And now thanks to those keychain-sized USB drives, every guest has his keychain checked before he enters, and has to empty his pockets. Of course, you could still sneak one in, anything is possible as we aren't going to be implementing strip searches anytime soon. ;)

In the mean time, we keep all the sensitive data as locked down as possible, and hope for the best. I suppose in the end it is just part of human nature; even the most honest, trustworthy of people will steal from you if given the right motivation. Caring managers and a good working environment go a long way to prevent theft (and general unhappiness/turnover!), perhaps even moreso than good security personnel.

"This project is dedicated to my cat, Precious, who passed away January 8, 2002, the same day construction was completed. May this church, of such amusement to My Little Chirper, express some of the joy she brought me.

"I thank my God upon every remembrance of you" Philippians 1:3

    About this project

I got back into LEGO building after a twenty-year "dark ages" as a means of dealing with grief after my first cat, Murray, passed away in June, 2000. I also adopted Precious, my third cat, at that time. She loved to be amidst my building from the start. She didn't disturb partially assembled LEGO objects, or even piles of bricks, so I only had to concern myself with cleaning up loose pieces when I was done working, and I could leave her to play around my assembled work without too much fear of damage.

My first project was to be a large house, about 4 feet by 2 feet in size. I drew floor plans, and then built much of the front wall as a test of concept. Then I set about creating a pattern for the floor that was to become the living room. I quickly came up with a double row of crosses that reminded me of the center aisle of a church, and building a church suddenly seemed like a more interesting project.

And so the Abston Church of Christ was conceived as my first LEGO project in twenty years. As the picture above shows, Precious continued to enjoy my building, and as you'll see in the Cats in Church pictures, she and her sister, Anya, made this project quite a lot of fun. Read about it in the construction log.

As chance would have it, I only had a few hours of work to complete after Precious passed away, so in her honor I wrapped it up that same day. I didn't have a chance to do some small revisions or to build a piano for the church because I wanted to leave it as it was on that day.

I hope you enjoy this church, because that's how I get to share the memory of My Little Chirper with you. I like to think of this as Precious's Church. "

Honestly, this is an amazing project, but the site gives me the creeps for some reason.

  19. Titanium is also excellent in body piercing. on The Sexiest Metal · · Score: 2

Titanium has seen more and more use over the past decade in body piercing as well. While it is just as strong as 316LVM (Implant Grade) Steel, it does not contain nickel either. People who have numerous and/or severe nickel allergies can be safely pierced thanks largely in part to Titanium (and Niobium as well).

The lighter weight of titanium is another highly-touted feature of the metal in body piercing. Once the piercing goes past a certain point in terms of size, called gauges, weight can become extremely prohibitive for successful healing. Titanium solves a lot of those problems, and allows people to easily start piercings at sizes like 2 gauge (1/4") without having the weight be problematic. I know several men and women who both swear by titanium in their bodies, and will never go back to another metal.

I know you are trolling, but I'll bite. If you reread my post, I never said anything about the music I listen to being more indie or in any way better than other music, nor was I implying it. My point was only that one of the main, often-cited reasons why people go online to try to find music is that they simply cannot find music they like elsewhere!

Radio in the US is very limited & homogenized, thanks to large corporations being very controlling with the playlists that they send out to their hundreds of stations. So where is the diversity? Online, that's where! The RIAA created that situation themselves by not promoting smaller acts, using payola situations to ensure that certain bands get played around-the-clock on stations all across the country, etc. If the RIAA would diversify the types of music that they actively promote, maybe so many people wouldn't feel the need to go searching online.

Maybe if the RIAA would price their CDs more reasonably, actually give money to their artists, and stop the overwhelming and unnecessary homogenization of the music which they promote to (read: push on) the public, people wouldn't be so inclined to download music.

Other than that, I honestly have not had too many problems with Mozilla Mail. Starting with .98, most of the major problems I was having ceased, and .99 fixed the ones that were bugging me in .98.
