    Normally I'm all for NASA bashing, and they and the mentality they represent are certainly not the way our species will get off this rock sustainably. Still, it seems kind of wrong to dump on them when we're talking about the Mars rovers, which by almost any measure was a job well done.

    Well considering the fact that MSFT spends over 5 billion a year on R&D, with very little to show for it in the way of actual products hitting shelves, it would be nice if they actually had something to show for all that cash spent.

    On the contrary, I'm delighted to hear that Microsoft is helping to neutralize itself by blowing billions on research that has no return on investment. Keep up the not-so-good work, guys!

    The word "conservative" lost its meaning a long time ago, particularly in the USA. How else do you explain the politicians who self-identify as "conservative" who are so eager to expand the size and power of government?

    Well, we still have the word "libertarian" so we can tell who actually wants to make government smaller, although even that one has to be taken with a bit of skepticism sometimes.

    Beer has a similar effect with me, and I assume that's because of the hops. Hops alone are sedating, and in fact hops tea (non-fermented, non-alcoholic) can be used as a natural sleep aid or a way to relax.

    Yup, if I drink a lot of beer I fall asleep too. Must be the hops.

    Unlike you, I don't want to push all of the Americans into the sea, but I have to admit I haven't had much with American cars. In addition to Japanese cars, though, consider Korean ones. I love my 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe, it's just as good a car and it was at a noticeably better price than its rivals. And it has a feature that I never realized I'd appreciate so much -- a tight turning radius.

    bombing clinics is stupid, as is all vigilante justice. that doesn't mean that violence can't stop violence; this is why cops carry guns, so that they can stop aggressors.

    This set of ideas only works if you accept that government sponsorship is both necessary and sufficient for legitimizing violence.

    "Atone" suggests he did something wrong. He hasn't. Through Craig's List, he has benefited humankind more than most people could ever dream, even though the sum of that benefit is made up of a great many increments each of which is very small.
