So what exactly does this mean for distributions such as Slackware wich ship a vanilla kernel? Personally I always preferred having it "as it was meant to be" without any tweaking of the distributor. The latest Fedora Core 2 debacle proves that this can lead to trouble (NVidia Binaries broken, etc.).
Distributions such as SLKX (wich ships a vanilla 2.4.22) didnt include the 2.6 series as the defaultkernel. My guess is Patrick didnt trust the beast yet. So what is a man like Pat to do if there isnt the manpower or will to patch the kernel but the "stable" branch cant be trusted anymore, too?
I can put my old Atari 1040ST to rest. No, seriously, this is another killerapp that kept some of my friends from switching to Linux so far. I am really curious if it is competitve enough and easy to use for all those Apple switchers.
Yeah, isn't it amazing? Considering that gaming is the only reason left to run Windows it's impressive how Microsoft failed miserably when it entered the console market.
Of course not. Its alright to use GUI-tools, I do so everyday. But it helps to know WHAT those tools actually do and where. From what I experienced if you want to get the system to do exactly what you want yuo still have to edit conf-files (and probably always will). Slack enables you to learn from bottom up, wich is fun and helps to relax you much more whenever you see the latest GUI-frontend.
I have it in use since day one (including the excellent Dropline-Gnome suite. Pat did a great job as far as it concerns me. One downside is that OpenOffice.org and Evolution are not included due to space restrictions. Another one maybe, that you can't install the 2.6.7 kernel from within the installer. No big deal, though, since all you need to do for an upgrade is a simple installpkg.
Aside that, it's a lightning fast distro that hasn't failed on me yet. Also, IMHO the greatest distro for starters since learning under Slack is learning it "the right way" and will help you later on with other unixlike systems.
That's exactly why monopolies are such a bad thing. In a Microsoft monoculture you can target many machines at a time what makes spyware an interesting business. If it was all mixed OSes and Browsers it wouldn't be half the fun...
Yeah, I know. As I said before, I really enjoyed the film and I read the book several times. What's more is that I didn't give credit to Jackson who is actually working at another piece of original art (the KingKong movie).
But still, I can't shake the feeling that the whole business got greedy to the point that it starts to make the industry look bad. Say what you want about Michael Moore but when he said that he didn't care if people download his movie he had a point. They are making "enough" money, and filesharing won't kill cinema.
I could have downloaded LOTR but I rather spent the money on the movie since it was worth it. But bringing the same movie on the screen, over and over again is just lame. I like double features, though. But please no more OBVIOUS ripoffs...;-)
It all started with Star Wars Special Edition and now hell is breaking loose. Whenever something is selling just a bit they don't release a sequel nomore, nohooo, they bring back the movie with 2 more minutes, or even more ugly CGI.
I really enjoyed the LOTR trilogy, but this is all getting out of hand. I know, nobody forces me into a cinema (yet) but it's no better with (special, extended, final, definitive, directors cut, redux, whatever) DVD editions! It's just too much these days.
Relax! It's just a movie. What's wrong with making a few million dollars when it's in cinema and get back to work on some ORIGINAL creative vision?
Why do they have to flog the dead horse until it smells? Harry Potter, what have you?;-/
That's what Gnome got right. Giving the apps a telling menuentry name, such as "Webbrowser, Mailclient, Text Editor". Hey, I don't CARE what the program is called when I'm a newbie. I need to get my work done. Why make the switch harder than necessery?
So what youre saying is that not only I should RTFA but also the discussion? Are you for real?
Anybody else read this and got the feeling that the iTunes part was obsolete? ;-)
You americans sometimes scare me. Not just one person hears it in Quimbys voice, at least three admit it. It's just hillarious. ;-)

while there is a beautiful iPod icon is actually a bit weird, but hey, this is Slashdot.

This might sound harsh but a human maid would be so much cheaper that I could employ him/her for many years while giving him/her work.
IBM had some interface nightmares of it's own. Good to see they learned their lessons.

Maybe I am missing the point but how is this new? Isn't this just a crossover of Gaim with GnomeMeeting?

with BlissX, my band. Had to clarify this.;-)
Ok, I know how to switch my wife, but how the hell did you switch your mother? I was planning on doing so for years.
;-)
Stupid joke I know, please ignore:
I'd rather say "Grab your popcorn!" ;-)
Honestly, anyone who is still using IE on Windows can't be in his/her right mind.

Yeah, or we could call it a dupe. Just like this story. ;-)
Well, I wouldn't count Europa out to fast.
It might well hold some surprises.
Of course not. This would violate the Star Fleets Prime Directive. Now get back to business and reverse polarity. ;-)
But, living in germany, the taxes on DVD-recorders (german, sorry) will probably eat up the win for the consumer.
Google translation here.
Anyone knows where the second girl is in this screenie?
;-)
I assume one of the guys is Roger, but where is Linda and Jessie?
I can see only one girl in this chat.
Probably glass walls.
